    • Several drugs blocking the rapidly activating potassium (K-r) channel cause malformations (including cardiac defects) and embryonic death in animal teratology studies. In humans, these drugs have an established risk for acquired long-QT syndrome and arrhythmia. Recently, associations between cardiac defects and spontaneous abortions have been reported for drugs widely used in pregnancy (e.g. antidepressants), with long-QT syndrome risk. To investigate whether a common embryonic adverse-effect mechanism exists in the human, rat, and rabbit embryos, we made a comparative study of embryonic cardiomyocytes from all three species. less thanbrgreater than less thanbrgreater thanPatch-clamp and quantitative-mRNA measurements of K-r and slowly activating K (K-s) channels were performed on human, rat, and rabbit primary cardiomyocytes and cardiac samples from different embryo-foetal stages. The K-r channel was present when the heart started to beat in all species, but was, in contrast to human and rabbit, lost in rats in late organogenesis. The specific K-r-channel blocker E-4031 prolonged the action potential in a species- and development-dependent fashion, consistent with the observed K-r-channel expression pattern and reported sensitive periods of developmental toxicity. E-4031 also increased the QT interval and induced 2:1 atrio-ventricular block in multi-electrode array electrographic recordings of rat embryos. The K-s channel was expressed in human and rat throughout the embryo-foetal period but not in rabbit. less thanbrgreater than less thanbrgreater thanThis first comparison of mRNA expression, potassium currents, and action-potential characteristics, with and without a specific K-r-channel blocker in human, rat, and rabbit embryos provides evidence of K-r-channel inhibition as a common mechanism for embryonic malformations and death.

    • In order to study the ability of costimulation blockade to induce tolerance to human embryonic stem cells (HESC), severe combined immunodeficient (SCID), and immunocompetent C57BL/6 mice treated with costimulation blockade received intratesticular and intramyocardial HESC transplants. All SCID mice with intratesticular HESC transplants developed teratoma. When SCID mice were transplanted intramyocardially, only two of five mice developed teratoma-like tumors. C57BL/6 mice transplanted intratesticularly and treated with costimulation blockade all developed teratoma and were surrounded by CD4(+)CD25(+)Foxp3(+) T-cells, while isotype control treated recipients rejected their grafts. Most C57BL/6 mice transplanted intramyocardially and treated with costimulation blockade demonstrated lymphocytic infiltrates 1 month after transplantation, whereas one maintained its graft. Isolation of regulatory T-cells from intramyocardial transplanted recipients treated with costimulation blockade demonstrated specificity toward undifferentiated HESC and down-regulated naive T-cell activation toward HESC. These results demonstrate that costimulation blockade is sufficiently robust to induce tolerance to HESC in the immune-privileged environment of the testis. HESC specific regulatory T-cells developed to HESC transplanted to the heart and the success of transplantation was similar to that seen in SCID mice.

  • Studying Disability Related Terms with Swe-Clarin Resources

    • In Swedish, as in other languages, the words used to refer to disabilities and people with disabilities are manifold. Recommendations as to which terms to use have been changed several times over the last hundred years. In this exploratory paper we have used textual resources provided by Swe-Clarin to study such changes quantitatively. We demonstrate that old and new recommendations co-exist for long periods of time, and that usage sometimes converges.

    • In Sweden, Early Childhood Education and Care is a right for every child and children in need of special support have access to these provisions in inclusive mainstream settings. National evaluations show great quality variations in special educational support in preschools and schools across the country. A Multicenter Research School with 10 PhD students from four Universities and international partners has been funded (2018- 2021) by the Swedish Research Council to develop knowledge in early intervention. Preschool/school environments are assessed and tailored interventions at unit or child level are developed. The projects are built on previous research and identified needs in research and practice. The theoretical framework for the Research School will be described, results from a systematic review of previous research and specific plans for various topics (engagement, early literacy, expressive language development, socio- emotional development, self-regulation) will be presented and linked to the theoretical framework.

  • Longitudinal Typical Patterns of Behaviour and Engagement of Children with Swedish or Other Ethnicity and the Impact of Special Support in Swedish Preschools

    • It is of concern that some children, even at a young age, are less engaged than others. Findings indicate that children of other ethnicities are less engaged in preschool activities than their Swedish peers. They also more commonly display behaviour difficulties. Such negative patterns tend to be stable over time. Provision of special support in preschool could change this; however children of other ethnicities have been found to be less supported in preschool, compared to Swedish children. This study aimed to explore longitudinal typical patterns of engagement and behaviour of children of Swedish and other ethnicities in Swedish preschools and the association with special support provision. Data were collected at three time points (n=197; 110 boys; 48 of other ethnicities; 15-57 months). A longitudinal pattern analysis revealed five stable types, examined regarding the influence of provision of support and proportion of children with other ethnicities.

    • Background: People with cognitive impairment often need support to perform everyday-life activities. Interventions are available, but evidence-based interventions are lacking.Aim: This pilot RCT aimed to investigate use of an intervention with an interactive digital calendar with mobile phone reminders (RemindMe) in relation to change in outcomes and impact on occupational performance, independence, health-related quality of life, and psychosocial impact of the support for people with cognitive impairment.Method: The study design was a multi-centre parallel-group pilot RCT [ClinicalTrails.gov, identifier: NCT04470219]. Fifteen participants from primary rehabilitation centres in Sweden were recruited and randomly assigned to intervention group (n = 8) receiving the intervention with RemindMe, or control group (n = 7) receiving usual treatment by an occupational therapist. Data were collected at baseline, after two- and four months, and analysed using descriptive and non-parametric statistics.Result: The Canadian Occupational Performance Measure (COPM), and the Functional Independence Measure (FIM item n-r) showed significant differences. There were no significant differences in health-related quality of life nor in the psychosocial impact of the used support.Conclusion: Plausible changes in outcome measures were found in COPM and FIM (items n-r). These instruments indicate change in outcome measures and impact on occupational performance and independence.

  • Digital support for people with cognitive impairment : An intervention to increase the occupational performance in everyday life

    • Introduction: Senior people with cognitive impairment may experience an inability to manage everyday life due to difficulties related to time management, and planning and structuring everyday life. These difficulties can affect people negatively, for example not remembering to carry out future planned activities. Interventions that compensate for lost cognitive ability often include using assistive technology for cognition (ATC). By investigating the feasibility and potential effects of an intervention with the interactive digital calendar with active reminders, RemindMe, knowledge can be generated about aspects of learning to use and using digital support. Further, knowledge can also be generated about occupations in everyday life that people need to receive reminders for, both during the rehabilitation period and two years after the rehabilitation period. This knowledge can support building evidence-based interventions in rehabilitation for people with cognitive impairment using digital technology. Aim: The overall aim of this thesis was to study an interactive digital calendar with mobile phone reminders (RemindMe) for people with cognitive impairment, as support to increase the occupational performance in everyday life. Methods: This thesis includes four studies, using both qualitative and quantitative data collection methods. Study I was a focus group interview, exploring twenty senior people aged between 66 and 85 and their experiences of learning to use and using RemindMe in everyday life. The seniors had used RemindMe for six weeks and had received weekly support calls from a research assistant during the study period. After six weeks, the participants took part in focus group interviews. Four focus group interviews were conducted, analysed with content analyses. The use of RemindMe and feasibility aspects were also investigated in study II with a mixed-methods design. Eight patients with cognitive impairment, aged between 26–68, and seven occupational therapists participated. The occupational therapists were experienced in occupational therapy and were working at three different outpatient rehabilitation clinics in southeast Sweden. They had a median of 20 years of experience (range of 2–25 years). The patients received an introduction to using RemindMe, as well as weekly support calls from occupational therapists or a research assistant for eight weeks. Quantitative data was collected using the Quebec User Evaluation of Satisfaction with Assistive Technology 2.0 (QUEST 2.0). The frequency of and the actual use of RemindMe was generated by RemindMe. Qualitative data was collected via face-to-face interviews with occupational therapists, via field notes from the weekly support conversations, and during the assessments with patients with cognitive impairment. Analyses were conducted using descriptive statistics and directive deductive content analyses. Study III investigated the intervention with RemindMe, addressing plausible outcome measures by investigating changes in outcomes, impact on occupational performance, independence, health-related quality of life, and the psychosocial impact of support used for people with cognitive impairment. The design was a pilot randomized controlled trial with fifteen patients, with cognitive impairment, aged between 26–79, randomized to either an intervention group or a control group. The intervention group consisted of eight patients and the control group of seven patients. The outcome measures were assessed using the Canadian Occupational Performance Measure (COPM), the Functional Independence Measure (FIM), the EuroQol 5-Dimension Visual Analog Scale (EQ-5D-VAS), and the Psychosocial Impact of Assistive Devices Scale (PIADS). Study III was registered at ClinicalTrails.gov, identifier: NCT04470219. Study IV explored seven patients, aged between 51–71, experiences of strategies and support used to establish a new everyday life and their experience of support for time management and planning and structuring everyday life due to cognitive impairment. The study was a qualitative, semi-structured, face-to-face interview. The interviews were analysed with inductive content analysis. Results: The results of this thesis address learning to use and using assistive technology for cognition (ATC) in everyday life and outcomes from using RemindMe. The participants were accustomed to using calendars. However, there were differences in terms of whether they preferred to use “low tech” calendars (such as paper calendars), or “high tech” calendars (for example, digital calendars with reminders), or whether a combination of “low and high tech” was preferred (Studies I and IV). Other support strategies were also described, for example, the conscious use of objects as reminders in the home environment or everyday life routines (Study IV). Participants were positive towards the use of digital technology, especially mobile phones/smartphones that they easily can carry with them (Studies I and IV). Participants also described the advantage of using digital technology with active reminders and audio prompts, signalling, and telling them when to do something. This was described as the reminder “talks to me” (Study I). The actual use of RemindMe showed that reminders were for example used for taking medication, do exercises, or meeting family or friends (Study II). Occupational therapists in Study II described that their patients benefited from using reminders and that patients have to be active in their everyday life and perceive a need for reminders. The outcomes from measurements of occupational performance (COPM) indicate that patients in the intervention group increased their occupational performance and their satisfaction with their performance compared with the control group. The intervention group also increased their independence (FIM) in the communication and social and intellectual abilities subscales (Study III). Conclusions: The results indicate the importance of choosing a reminder that is suited to the patient’s needs, and this reminder can be either “low tech” or “high tech”. The important thing is that the reminder matches the patient’s needs. The result also indicates that for people with cognitive impairment to make full use of the reminder in everyday life, support with learning to use and using the device for a longer period is needed. Participants (Studies II, III, and IV) described scheduling and receiving active reminders as important for achieving a feeling of comfort and security. Another technique was to find habits and routines or objects to support time management and planning and structuring everyday life. Having a sense of comfort and security involved being in control of everyday life. It can be understood as people talking about being fully involved in their life situations, and in that sense as experiencing participation. However, this was s not investigated in the present studies. Two years after the rehabilitation period, digital or paper calendars were used to establish a new everyday life. Active reminders were trusted and resulted in a feeling of comfort and security as well as a sense of control and independence in everyday life.

    • Cognitive impairment may cause difficulties in planning and initiating daily activities, as well as remembering to do what is scheduled. This study investigates the effectiveness of an interactive web-based mobile reminder calendar that sends text messages to the users mobile phone as support in everyday life, for persons with cognitive impairment due to neurological injury/diagnoses. The study has a randomised controlled trail design with data collection at baseline and at follow-up sessions after two and four months. Data collection started in August 2016 and continues until December 2017. The interactive web-based mobile reminder calendar may give the needed support to remind the person and thus increase the ability to perform activities and to be independence in everyday life. Preliminary results will be presented regarding what effect the interactive web-based mobile reminder calendar have for the participants performance of everyday life activities as well as perceived quality of life.

    • The aim of this study is to increase evidence-based interventions by investigating the feasibility of an intervention using an interactive digital calendar with mobile phone reminders (RemindMe) as support in everyday life. Qualitative and quantitative data were collected from participating patients (n = 8) and occupational therapists (n = 7) from three rehabilitation clinics in Sweden. The intervention consisted of delivering the interactive digital calendar RemindMe, receiving an individualized introduction, a written manual, and individual weekly conversations for two months with follow-up assessments after two and four months. Feasibility areas of acceptability, demand, implementation, practicality, and integration were examined. Patients expressed their interest and intention to use RemindMe and reported a need for reminders and individualized support. By using reminders in activities in everyday life their autonomy was supported. The study also demonstrated the importance of confirming reminders and the possible role of habit-forming. Occupational therapists perceived the intervention to be useful at the rehabilitation clinics and the weekly support conversations enabled successful implementation. This study confirmed the importance of basing and tailoring the intervention to patients' needs and thus being person-centered.

    • Self-driving buses will be part of the public transportation system of the future, and they must therefore be accessible to all. The study reported in this paper examines the user experiences of 16 children with mild intellectual disability riding a self-driving bus. The qualitative analysis, performed by iterative affinity diagramming, of interviews, observations, and a co-design session with five of the children, suggests that familiar situations were characterized by contemplation and curiosity, while unfamiliar ones were characterized by surprise or confusion. The temporal structure of past, present, and future situations in the field of attention played a significant role in the children’s experiences. This leads to design considerations for an explainable interior of self-driving buses.

    • The performance of structural timber connections is of utmost importance since they control the global response of the building. A ductile failure mechanism on the global scale is desirable, especially in the design of structures in seismic areas, where dissipative components in which ductile failure modes need to be ensured are considered. Therefore, the knowledge of possible brittle failure modes of connections is crucial. The paper investigates the brittle failures of laterally loaded dowel-type connections in cross-laminated timber subjected to tensile load in a lap joint configuration through experimental investigations and analytical estimations. A set of 13 different test series has been performed with fully threaded self-tapping screws of 8 mm diameter and different lengths (40 to 100 mm) in cross-laminated timber composed of 3 or 5 layers (layer thickness range from 20 to 40 mm), giving rise to the activation of different brittle failure modes at different depths. Plug shear was among the most typically observed failure modes. A previously proposed model for the brittle capacity was applied to the tested connections at the characteristic level. As shown by the performed statistical analysis, the existing model is not reliable and mainly unconservative. A very low performance is observed (CCC = 0.299), but with a good correlation (c = 0.750) for the tests in the parallel direction. Further research work is required to improve the current model predictions and to gain a better understanding of the underlying resisting mechanisms.

    • Numerical simulations and parametric studies of glued-in rods in cross-laminated timber have been performed. The simulations were based on 3D finite element analysis, using a cohesive surface model for the bond-lines between the laminations and the bond-line along the rod. The parametric studies investigated the influence of the glued-in length, the rod diameter, and the rod-to-grain angle on the load-bearing capacity and stiffness of the connection. The analyses showed that the load-bearing capacity generally increases with the glued-in length and the rod diameter, which agrees well with experiments. For different rod-to-grain angles, different mechanical behaviour was observed, especially considering the failure modes.

    • The research project Innovative Solutions for Cross Laminated Timber Structures (InnoCrossLam) wasrecently finished. The project aimed at increasing the competitiveness of CLT as a versatile engineered product, byincreasing its predictability in demanding design situations not covered by the guidelines of today, or standards and codesforeseeable in the near future (e.g., second generation of European design standards). This paper summarises the mainproject findings in the context of innovative CLT structures, such as: i. contemporary design approaches ii. the use of(non)linear FE modelling iii. experimental investigation of complex details for CLT structures, iv. investigation ofmultifunctional CLT. In this paper, the motivation behind the research topics within the project InnoCrossLam isexplained and backed-up by exemplary results and discussion on future work.

    • Objective/Background: To achieve consensus on the minimum core data set for evaluation of peripheral arterial revascularisation outcomes and enable collaboration among international registries.Methods: A modified Delphi approach was used to achieve consensus among international vascular surgeons and registry members of the International Consortium of Vascular Registries (ICVR). Variables, including definitions, from registries covering open and endovascular surgery, representing 14 countries in ICVR, were collected and analysed to define a minimum core data set and to develop an optimum data set for registries. Up to three different levels of variable specification were suggested to allow inclusion of registries with simpler versus more complex data capture, while still allowing for data aggregation based on harmonised core definitions.Results: Among 31 invited experts, 25 completed five Delphi rounds via internet exchange and face to face discussions. In total, 187 different items from the various registry data forms were identified for potential inclusion in the recommended data set. Ultimately, 79 items were recommended for inclusion in minimum core data sets, including 65 items in the level 1 data set, and an additional 14 items in the more specific level 2 and 3 recommended data sets. Data elements were broadly divided into (i) patient characteristics; (ii) comorbidities; (iii) current medications; (iv) lesion treated; (v) procedure; (vi) bypass; (vii) endarterectomy (viii) catheter based intervention; (ix) complications; and (x) follow up.Conclusion: A modified Delphi study allowed 25 international vascular registry experts to achieve a consensus recommendation for a minimum core data set and an optimum data set for peripheral arterial revascularisation registries. Continued global harmonisation of registry infrastructure and definition of items will overcome limitations related to single country investigations and enhance the development of real world evidence.

    • AlGaN/GaN high electron mobility transistors (HEMTs) fabricated on a heterostructure grown by metalorganic chemical vapor deposition using analternative method of carbon (C) doping the buffer are characterized. C-doping is achieved by using propane as precursor, as compared to tuningthe growth process parameters to control C-incorporation from the gallium precursor. This approach allows for optimization of the GaN growthconditions without compromising material quality to achieve semi-insulating properties. The HEMTs are evaluated in terms of isolation anddispersion. Good isolation with OFF-state currents of 2 ' 10%6A/mm, breakdown fields of 70V/μm, and low drain induced barrier lowering of0.13mV/V are found. Dispersive effects are examined using pulsed current–voltage measurements. Current collapse and knee walkout effectslimit the maximum output power to 1.3W/mm. With further optimization of the C-doping profile and GaN material quality this method should offer aversatile approach to decrease dispersive effects in GaN HEMTs.

    • The audiogram predicts less than a third of the variance in speech reception thresholds (SRTs) for hearing-impaired (HI) listeners properly fit with individualized frequency-dependent gain. The remaining variance is often attributed to a combination of su-prathreshold distortion in the auditory pathway and non-auditory factors such as cogni-tive processing. Distinguishing between these factors requires a measure of suprathresh-old auditory processing to account for the non-cognitive contributions. Preliminary re-sults in 12 HI listeners identified a correlation between spectrotemporal modulation (STM) sensitivity and speech intelligibility in noise presented over headphones. The cur-IHCON 2014 27 August 13-17, 2014rent study assessed the effectiveness of STM sensitivity as a measure of suprathreshold auditory function to predict free-field SRTs in noise for a larger group of 47 HI listeners with hearing aids.SRTs were measured for Hagerman sentences presented at 65 dB SPL in stationary speech-weighted noise or four-talker babble. Pre-recorded speech and masker stimuli were played through a small anechoic chamber equipped with a master hearing aid pro-grammed with individualized gain. The output from an IEC711 Ear Simulator was played binaurally through insert earphones. Three processing algorithms were examined: linear gain, linear gain plus noise reduction, or fast-acting compressive gain.STM stimuli consist of spectrally-rippled noise with spectral-peak frequencies that shift over time. STM with a 2-cycle/octave spectral-ripple density and a 4-Hz modulation rate was applied to a 2-kHz lowpass-filtered pink-noise carrier. Stimuli were presented over headphones at 80 dB SPL (±5-dB roving). The threshold modulation depth was estimated adaptively in a two-alternative forced-choice task.STM sensitivity was strongly correlated (R2=0.48) with the global SRT (i.e., the SRTs averaged across masker and processing conditions). The high-frequency pure-tone aver-age (3-8 kHz) and age together accounted for 23% of the variance in global SRT. STM sensitivity accounted for an additional 28% of the variance in global SRT (total R2=0.51) when combined with these two other metrics in a multiple-regression analysis. Correla-tions between STM sensitivity and SRTs for individual conditions were weaker for noise reduction than for the other algorithms, and marginally stronger for babble than for sta-tionary noise.The results are discussed in the context of previous work suggesting that STM sensitivity for low rates and low carrier frequencies is impaired by a reduced ability to use temporal fine-structure information to detect slowly shifting spectral peaks. STM detection is a fast, simple test of suprathreshold auditory function that accounts for a substantial pro-portion of variability in hearing-aid outcomes for speech perception in noise.
