  • Determining the likely place of HIV acquisition for migrants in Europe combining subject-specific information and biomarkers data
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Statistical methods in medical research. - : SAGE Publications. - 1477-0334 .- 0962-2802. ; 28:7, s. 1979-1997
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In most HIV-positive individuals, infection time is only known to lie between the time an individual started being at risk for HIV and diagnosis time. However, a more accurate estimate of infection time is very important in certain cases. For example, one of the objectives of the Advancing Migrant Access to Health Services in Europe (aMASE) study was to determine if HIV-positive migrants, diagnosed in Europe, were infected pre- or post-migration. We propose a method to derive subject-specific estimates of unknown infection times using information from HIV biomarkers’ measurements, demographic, clinical, and behavioral data. We assume that CD4 cell count (CD4) and HIV-RNA viral load trends after HIV infection follow a bivariate linear mixed model. Using post-diagnosis CD4 and viral load measurements and applying the Bayes’ rule, we derived the posterior distribution of the HIV infection time, whereas the prior distribution was informed by AIDS status at diagnosis and behavioral data. Parameters of the CD4–viral load and time-to-AIDS models were estimated using data from a large study of individuals with known HIV infection times (CASCADE). Simulations showed substantial predictive ability (e.g. 84% of the infections were correctly classified as pre- or post-migration). Application to the aMASE study ( n = 2009) showed that 47% of African migrants and 67% to 72% of migrants from other regions were most likely infected post-migration. Applying a Bayesian method based on bivariate modeling of CD4 and viral load, and subject-specific information, we found that the majority of HIV-positive migrants in aMASE were most likely infected after their migration to Europe.

  • Determination of the neutron-capture rate of C-17 for r-process nucleosynthesis
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C. - 2469-9985 .- 2469-9993. ; 95:1, s. Article no 014613 -
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • With the (RB)-B-3-LAND setup at GSI we have measured exclusive relative-energy spectra of the Coulomb dissociation of C-18 at a projectile energy around 425A MeV on a lead target, which are needed to determine the radiative neutron-capture cross sections of C-17 into the ground state of C-18. Those data have been used to constrain theoretical calculations for transitions populating excited states in C-18. This allowed to derive the astrophysical cross section sigma(n gamma)*. accounting for the thermal population of C-17 target states in astrophysical scenarios. The experimentally verified capture rate is significantly lower than those of previously obtained Hauser-Feshbach estimations at temperatures T-9

    • Neutron-rich light nuclei and their reactions play an important role in the creation of chemical elements. Here, data from a Coulomb dissociation experiment on N20,21 are reported. Relativistic N20,21 ions impinged on a lead target and the Coulomb dissociation cross section was determined in a kinematically complete experiment. Using the detailed balance theorem, the N19(n,γ)N20 and N20(n,γ)N21 excitation functions and thermonuclear reaction rates have been determined. The N19(n,γ)N20 rate is up to a factor of 5 higher at T

  • Differential cross sections for neutron-proton scattering in the region of the d* (2380) dibaryon resonance
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C. Nuclear Physics. - : AMER PHYSICAL SOC. - 0556-2813 .- 1089-490X. ; 102:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Differential cross sections have been extracted from exclusive and kinematically complete high-statistics measurements of quasifree polarized (n) over barp scattering performed in the energy region of the d* (2380) dibaryon resonance covering the range of beam energies T-n = 0.98-1.29 GeV (root s = 2.32-2.44 GeV). The experiment was carried out with the WASA-at-COSY setup having a polarized deuteron beam impinged on the hydrogen pellet target and utilizing the quasifree process dp -> np + p(spectator). In this way the np differential cross section sigma (Theta) was measured over a large angular range. The obtained angular distributions complement the corresponding analyzing power A(y)(Theta) measurements published previously. A SAID partial-wave analysis incorporating the new data strengthens the finding of a resonance pole in the coupled D-3(3) - (3)G(3) waves.

  • Evidence for a New Resonance from Polarized Neutron-Proton Scattering
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - 0031-9007 .- 1079-7114. ; 112:20, s. 202301-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Exclusive and kinematically complete high-statistics measurements of quasifree polarized (n) over right arrowp scattering have been performed in the energy region of the narrow resonancelike structure d* with I(J(P)) = 0(3(+)),M approximate to 2380 MeV, and Gamma approximate to 70 MeV observed recently in the double-pionic fusion channels pn -> d pi(0)pi(0) and pn -> d pi(+)pi(-). The experiment was carried out with the WASA detector setup at COSY having a polarized deuteron beam impinged on the hydrogen pellet target and utilizing the quasifree process (d) over right arrowp -> np + p(spectator). This allowed the np analyzing power, A(y), to be measured over a broad angular range. The obtained A(y) angular distributions deviate systematically from the current SAID SP07 NN partial-wave solution. Incorporating the new A(y) data into the SAID analysis produces a pole in the D-3(3) - (3)G(3) waves in support of the d* resonance hypothesis.

  • Combined limit on the production of a light gauge boson decaying into mu(+) mu(-) and pi(+) pi(-)
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Physics Letters B. - : ELSEVIER SCIENCE BV. - 0370-2693 .- 1873-2445. ; 784, s. 336-341
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We searched for the mu(+) mu(-) decay of a light vector gauge boson, also known as dark photon, in the e(+) e(-) -> mu(+) mu(-) gamma(ISR) process by means of the Initial State Radiation (ISR) method. We used 1.93fb(-1) of data collected by the KLOE experiment at the DA Phi NE phi-factory. No structures have been observed over the irreducible mu(+) mu(-) background. A 90% CL limit on the ratio epsilon(2)= alpha'/alpha between the dark coupling constant and the fine structure constant of 3 x 10(-6)-2 x 10(-7) has been set in the dark photon mass region between 519 MeV and 973 MeV. This new limit has been combined with the published result obtained investigating the hypothesis of the dark photon decaying into hadrons in e(+) e(-) -> pi(+) pi(-) gamma(ISR) events. The combined 90% CL limit increases the sensitivity especially in the rho-omega interference region and excludes epsilon(2) greater than (13 - 2) x 10(-7). For dark photon masses greater than 600 MeV the combined limit is lower than 8 x 10(-7) resulting more stringent than present constraints from other experiments.

  • The anomalous magnetic moment of the muon in the Standard Model
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Physics reports. - : Elsevier BV. - 0370-1573 .- 1873-6270. ; 887, s. 1-166
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We review the present status of the Standard Model calculation of the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon. This is performed in a perturbative expansion in the fine-structure constant α and is broken down into pure QED, electroweak, and hadronic contributions. The pure QED contribution is by far the largest and has been evaluated up to and including O(α5) with negligible numerical uncertainty. The electroweak contribution is suppressed by (mμ/MW)2 and only shows up at the level of the seventh significant digit. It has been evaluated up to two loops and is known to better than one percent. Hadronic contributions are the most difficult to calculate and are responsible for almost all of the theoretical uncertainty. The leading hadronic contribution appears at O(α2) and is due to hadronic vacuum polarization, whereas at O(α3) the hadronic light-by-light scattering contribution appears. Given the low characteristic scale of this observable, these contributions have to be calculated with nonperturbative methods, in particular, dispersion relations and the lattice approach to QCD. The largest part of this review is dedicated to a detailed account of recent efforts to improve the calculation of these two contributions with either a data-driven, dispersive approach, or a first-principle, lattice-QCD approach. The final result reads aμSM = 116 591 810(43) x 10-11 and is smaller than the Brookhaven measurement by 3.7 σ. The experimental uncertainty will soon be reduced by up to a factor four by the new experiment currently running at Fermilab, and also by the future J-PARC experiment. This and the prospects to further reduce the theoretical uncertainty in the near future - which are also discussed here - make this quantity one of the most promising places to look for evidence of new physics.

  • Measurement of the branching fraction for the decay K-S -> pi mu nu with the KLOE detector
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Physics Letters B. - : ELSEVIER. - 0370-2693 .- 1873-2445. ; 804
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Based on a sample of 300 million K-S mesons produced in phi -> KLKS decays recorded by the KLOE experiment at the DA Phi NE e(+)e(-) collider we have measured the branching fraction for the decay K-S -> pi mu nu. The K-S mesons are identified by the interaction of K-L mesons in the detector. The K-S -> pi mu nu decays are selected by a boosted decision tree built with kinematic variables and by a time-of-flight measurement. Signal efficiencies are evaluated with data control samples of K-L -> pi mu nu decays. A fit to the reconstructed muon mass distribution finds 7223 +/- 180 signal events. Normalising to the K-S -> pi(+)pi(-) decay events the result for the branching fraction is B(K-S -> pi mu nu) = (4.56 +/- 0.11(stat) +/- 0.17(syst)) x 10(-4). It is the first measurement of this decay mode and the result allows an independent determination of vertical bar V-us vertical bar and a test of the lepton-flavour universality. (c) 2020 The Author. • Systematic investigation of projectile fragmentation using beams of unstable B and C isotopes
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C - Nuclear Physics. - 2469-9985 .- 2469-9993 .- 0556-2813. ; 93:5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Models describing nuclear fragmentation and fragmentation fission deliver important input for planning nuclear physics experiments and future radioactive ion beam facilities. These models are usually benchmarked against data from stable beam experiments. In the future, two-step fragmentation reactions with exotic nuclei as stepping stones are a promising tool for reaching the most neutron-rich nuclei, creating a need for models to describe also these reactions. Purpose: We want to extend the presently available data on fragmentation reactions towards the light exotic region on the nuclear chart. Furthermore, we want to improve the understanding of projectile fragmentation especially for unstable isotopes. Method: We have measured projectile fragments from C10,12-18 and B10-15 isotopes colliding with a carbon target. These measurements were all performed within one experiment, which gives rise to a very consistent data set. We compare our data to model calculations. Results: One-proton removal cross sections with different final neutron numbers (1pxn) for relativistic C10,12-18 and B10-15 isotopes impinging on a carbon target. Comparing model calculations to the data, we find that the epax code is not able to describe the data satisfactorily. Using abrabla07 on the other hand, we find that the average excitation energy per abraded nucleon needs to be decreased from 27 MeV to 8.1 MeV. With that decrease abrabla07 describes the data surprisingly well. Conclusions: Extending the available data towards light unstable nuclei with a consistent set of new data has allowed a systematic investigation of the role of the excitation energy induced in projectile fragmentation. Most striking is the apparent mass dependence of the average excitation energy per abraded nucleon. Nevertheless, this parameter, which has been related to final-state interactions, requires further study.

  • Abashian-Booth-Crowe resonance structure in the double pionic fusion to He-4
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C. Nuclear Physics. - 0556-2813 .- 1089-490X. ; 86:3, s. 032201-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Exclusive and kinematically complete high-statistics measurements of the double pionic fusion reaction dd -> He-4 pi(0)pi(0) have been performed in the energy range 0.8-1.4 GeV covering thus the region of the Abashian-Booth-Crowe effect, which denotes a pronounced low-mass enhancement in the pi pi invariant mass spectrum. The experiments were carried out with the WASA detector setup at the cooler synchrotron at Forshungszentrum Julich GmbH. Similar to the observation in the basic pn -> d pi(0)pi(0) reaction, the data reveal a correlation between the ABC effect and a resonancelike energy dependence in the total cross section. The maximum occurs at m = 2.37 GeV + 2m(N), i.e., at the same position as in the basic reaction. The observed resonance width Gamma approximate to 160 MeV can be understood from broadening due to Fermi motion of the nucleons in initial and final nuclei together with collision damping. Differential cross sections are described equally well by the hypothesis of a pn resonance formation during the reaction process.

  • Isospin decomposition of the basic double-pionic fusion in the region of the ABC effect
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Physics Letters B. - : Elsevier BV. - 0370-2693 .- 1873-2445. ; 721:4-5, s. 229-236
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Exclusive and kinematically complete high-statistics measurements of the basic double-pionic fusion reactions pn -> d pi(0)pi(0), pn -> d pi(+)pi(-) and pp -> d pi(+)pi(0) have been carried out simultaneously over the energy region of the ABC effect using the WASA detector setup at COSY. Whereas the isoscalar reaction part given by the d pi(0)pi(0) channel exhibits the ABC effect, i.e. a low-mass enhancement in the pi pi-invariant mass distribution, as well as the associated resonance structure in the total cross section, the isovector part given by the d pi(+)pi(0) channel shows a smooth behavior consistent with the conventional t-channel Delta Delta process. The d pi(+)pi(-) data are very well reproduced by combining the data for isovector and isoscalar contributions, if the kinematical consequences of the isospin violation due to different masses for charged and neutral pions are taken into account.

  • Ingår i: Physics Letters B. - : ELSEVIER SCIENCE BV. - 0370-2693 .- 1873-2445. ; 784, s. 378-384
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report on the search for the rare decay eta -> pi(0)e(+)e(-) which is of interest to study C violation in the electromagnetic interaction which would indicate contributions from physics beyond the Standard Model, since the allowed decay via a two-photon intermediate state is strongly suppressed. The experiment has been performed using the WASA-at-COSY installation, located at the COSY accelerator of the Forschungszentrum Julich, Germany. In total 3 x 10(7) events of the reaction pd -> He-3 eta have been recorded at an excess energy of Q = 59.8MeV. Based on this data set the C parity violating decay eta -> pi(0)gamma* -> pi(0)e(+)e(-) via a single-photon intermediate state has been searched for, resulting in new upper limits of Gamma(eta -> pi(0)e(+) e(-))/Gamma(eta -> pi(+) pi(-) pi(0)) < 3.28 x 10(-5) and Gamma(eta -> pi(0)e(+) e(-))/Gamma(eta -> all)< 7.5 x 10(-6) (CL=90%), respectively.

    • An exclusive measurement of the excitation function for the dd -> (3)Hep pi(-) reaction was performed at the Cooler Synchrotron COSY-Julich with the WASA-at-COSY detection system. The data were taken during a slow acceleration of the beam from 2.185 to 2.400 GeV/c crossing the kinematic threshold for the eta-meson production in the dd -> He-4 eta reaction at 2.336 GeV/c. The corresponding excess energy with respect to the He-4-eta system varied from -51.4 to 22 MeV. The integrated luminosity in the experiment was determined using the dd -> (3)Hen reaction. The shape of the excitation function for the dd -> (3)Hep pi(-) reaction was examined. No signal of the He-4-eta bound state was observed. An upper limit for the cross section for the bound state formation and decay in the process dd -> (He-4-eta)(bound) -> (3)Hep pi(-) was determined on the 90% confidence level and it varies from 20 to 27 nb for the bound state width ranging from 5 to 35 MeV, respectively.

  • Ingår i: Physics Letters B. - : ELSEVIER SCIENCE BV. - 0370-2693 .- 1873-2445. ; 767, s. 485-492

    • We have measured the running of the effective QED coupling constant alpha(s) in the time-like region 0.6 < root s < 0.975 GeV with the KLOE detector at DA Phi NE using the Initial-State Radiation process e(+) e(-) -> mu(+) mu(-)gamma. It represents the first measurement of the running of alpha(s) in this energy region. Our results show a more than 5 sigma significance of the hadronic contribution to the running of alpha(s), which is the strongest direct evidence both in time- and space-like regions achieved in a single measurement. By using the e(+) e(-) -> pi(+) pi(-) cross section measured by KLOE, the real and imaginary parts of the shift Delta alpha(s) have been extracted. From a fit of the real part of Delta alpha(s) and assuming the lepton universality the branching ratio BR(omega -> mu(+) mu(-)) = (6.6 +/- 1.4(stat) +/- 1.7(syst)) (.) 10 (5)has been determined.

  • Beyond the neutron drip line: The unbound oxygen isotopes O-25 and O-26
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C - Nuclear Physics. - 2469-9985 .- 2469-9993 .- 0556-2813. ; 88:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The very neutron-rich oxygen isotopes O-25 and O-26 are investigated experimentally and theoretically. The unbound states are populated in an experiment performed at the R3B-LAND setup at GSI via proton-knockout reactions from F-26 and F-27 at relativistic energies around 442 and 414 MeV/nucleon, respectively. From the kinematically complete measurement of the decay into O-24 plus one or two neutrons, the O-25 ground-state energy and width are determined, and upper limits for the O-26 ground-state energy and lifetime are extracted. In addition, the results provide indications for an excited state in O-26 at around 4 MeV. The experimental findings are compared to theoretical shell-model calculations based on chiral two- and three-nucleon (3N) forces, including for the first time residual 3N forces, which are shown to be amplified as valence neutrons are added.

  • Abashian-Booth-Crowe Effect in Basic Double-Pionic Fusion : A New Resonance?
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - 0031-9007 .- 1079-7114. ; 106:24, s. 242302-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report on an exclusive and kinematically complete high-statistics measurement of the basic double-pionic fusion reaction pn -> d pi(0)pi(0) over the full energy region of the ABC effect, a pronounced low-mass enhancement in the pi pi-invariant mass spectrum. The measurements, which cover also the transition region to the conventional t- channel Delta Delta process, were performed with the upgraded WASA detector setup at COSY. The data reveal the Abashian-Booth-Crowe effect to be uniquely correlated with a Lorentzian energy dependence in the integral cross section. The observables are consistent with a narrow resonance with m = 2.37 GeV, Gamma approximate to 70 MeV and I(J(P)) = 0(3(+)) in both pn and Delta Delta systems. Necessary further tests of the resonance interpretation are discussed.
