  • Link Reliability in Cooperative Relaying Using Network Coding
  • 2010
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Demand for high data rates is increasing rapidly for future wireless systems. This trend is due to the increase in the number of mobile subscribers that need bandwidth hungry multimedia applications anywhere, anytime. Fourth generation cellular systems like IMT-advanced are being developed to meet these requirements. The unreliable nature of the wireless medium is one of the main hinderance in providing high data rates. Cooperative communication in cellular networks is emerging as a new paradigm to deal with the channel impairments. User cooperation via fixed relays in cellular systems form multiple access relay channels (MARCs) and provide an effective and cost efficient solution to achieve spatial diversity gains. Network resources can be utilized efficiently by using network coding at cooperating nodes. A lot of research work has focused on highlighting the gains achieved by using network coding in MARCs. However, there are certain areas that are not fully explored yet. For instance, the kind of the detection scheme used at the base station receiver and its impact on the link performance has not been addressed. In most cases, the outage probability has been used as a performance measure of MARCs. However, it is well known that the outage probability gives information about the signal availability, but it does not give the complete picture about the reliability of the link and the achieved quality of service. This thesis work looks at the link performance, in terms of symbol error probability, of multiple access relay channels that employ network coding at the relay node. Different types of detection schemes are considered and their performance is compared under different link conditions. Analytical expressions for the average symbol error probability of the cooperating users are derived. Focusing on the uplink of cellular systems, certain rules are devised on how to group users at relay node to ensure mutual benefit for the cooperating users. As a way of improving the link performance of multiple access relay channels and their robustness, the thesis considers constellation selection for the different branches. This method takes advantage of the redundancy between the transmitted symbols created by network coding and the augmented signal space obtained at the base station receiver. The obtained results show that, with a proper selection of the constellation sets, the link performance of MARCs can be improved. The thesis further looks at the interaction between the channel coding schemes of the cooperating users and network coding. It is shown that joint channel-network coding in MARCs can be seen as a product code. This new representation provides considerable flexibility in selecting efficient decoding algorithms at the base station receiver and gives the possibility to use more powerful network coding schemes for MARCs.

  • Decentralized equalizer construction for large intelligent surfaces
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: 2019 IEEE 90th Vehicular Technology Conference, VTC 2019 Fall - Proceedings. - 1550-2252. - 9781728112206 ; 2019-September
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper we present fully decentralized methods for calculating an approximate zero- forzing (ZF) equalizer in a large intelligent surface (LIS). A LIS is intended for wireless communication and facilitates unprecedented MU- MIMO performance, far superior to that of Massive MIMO. Antenna modules in the grid connect to their neighbors to exchange messages of information needed for interference cancellation in a fully- decentralized fashion, making the system scalable. By a careful design of how the messages are routed, we show that the proposed method is able to cancel inter-user interference sufficiently well without any centralized coordination, opening the door for the realization of this type of structures.

  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Large intelligent surface (LIS) is a technology that extends massive MIMO by considering an even greater number of antennas distributed throughout vast areas. In order to be able to implement this technology, it is crucial to consider decentralized architectures so as to make the whole system scalable. We consider a LIS divided into several LIS panels of smaller size, which can be located far away from each other. We present a modular architecture that allows combining different LIS panels using a binary tree. This architecture is also valid in a cell-free massive MIMO scenario. We make use of a newly defined matrix decomposition, the WAX decomposition, to define the modules that are used within our architecture. We also study the lossless dimensionality reduction in the data to be processed, which can be achieved using our proposed architecture.

  • Trade-Offs in Decentralized Multi-Antenna Architectures: The WAX Decomposition
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: IEEE Transactions on Signal Processing. - 1053-587X. ; 69, s. 3627-3641
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Current research on multi-antenna architectures is trending towards increasing the amount of antennas in the base stations (BSs) so as to increase the spectral efficiency. As a result, the interconnection bandwidth and computational complexity required to process the data using centralized architectures is becoming prohibitively high. Decentralized architectures can reduce these requirements by pre-processing the data before it arrives at a central processing unit (CPU). However, performing decentralized processing introduces also cost in complexity/interconnection bandwidth at the antenna end which is in general being ignored. This paper aims at studying the interplay between level of decentralization and the associated complexity/interconnection bandwidth requirement at the antenna end. To do so, we propose a general framework for centralized/decentralized architectures that can explore said interplay by adjusting some system parameters, namely the number of connections to the CPU (level of decentralization), and the number of multiplications/outputs per antenna (complexity/interconnection bandwidth). We define a novel matrix decomposition, the WAX decomposition, that allows information-lossless processing within our proposed framework, and we use it to obtain the operational limits of the interplay under study. We also look into some of the limitations of the WAX decomposition.

  • Trade-offs in quasi-decentralized massive MIMO
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: 2020 IEEE International Conference on Communications Workshops, ICC Workshops 2020 - Proceedings. - 9781728174402
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Typical massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) architectures consider a centralized approach, in which all baseband data received by each antenna has to be sent to a central processing unit (CPU) to be processed. Due to the enormous amount of antennas expected in massive MIMO base stations (BSs), the number of connections to the CPU required in centralized massive MIMO is not scalable. In recent literature decentralized approaches have been proposed to reduce the number of connections between the antennas and the CPU. However, the reduction in the connections to the CPU requires more outputs per antenna to be generated. We study the trade-off between number of connections to the CPU and number of outputs per antenna. We propose a generalized architecture that allows exploitation of this trade-off, and we define a novel matrix decomposition that allows information-lossless filtering within our proposed architecture.

  • Measured capacity gain using waterfilling in frequency selective MIMO channels
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: The 13th IEEE International Symposium on Personal, Indoor and Mobile Radio Communications, 2002 , vol 1-5, Proceedings. - 0780375890 ; , s. 1347-1351
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We analyze the channel capacity of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems in frequcncy selective channels, with channel knowledge at the transmitter side. An optimum transmission scheme uses Shannon's principle of waterfilling jointly in the frequency and the spatial domain. However, we show in this paper that the largest gain by using waterfilling resides in the spatial domain, and that the capacity gain from the frequency domain is very small for MIMO systems. We quantify the gain for a theoretical Rayleigh fading channel model and for microcellular channels as measured in an enclosed court-yard.

  • Channel Estimation and Prediction for MIMO OFDM Systems : Key Design and Performance Aspects of Kalman-based Algorithms
  • 2011
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Wireless broadband systems based on Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) are being introduced to meet demands for high data transfer rates. In multiple users systems, the available bandwidth has to be shared efficiently by several users. The radio channel quality will fluctuate, or fade, as users move. Fading complicates the resource allocation, but channel prediction may alleviate this problem. A flexible and computationally inexpensive state space representation of fading channels is here used in conjunction with a Kalman filter, operating on special-purpose reference signals, to track and predict fading OFDM channels. The thesis investigates key design and performance aspects of such estimators. Taking a probabilistic approach, we interpret the output of the Kalman filter as a full representation of a state of knowledge about the fading channels, given whatever information is at hand. For systems analysis, this permits conclusions to be drawn about channel estimation and prediction performance based on only vague information about the fading characteristics of the channel rather than on actual channel measurements. This is an alternative to conducting classic simulation studies. Various reference signal designs are studied and good design choices are recommended. Superimposed reference signal schemes are also proposed for and evaluated in cases where multiple signals are received, e.g. in multi-user (MU), multi-input multi-output (MIMO), or coordinated multi-point (CoMP) settings. By using time-varying reference signals, channel estimation and prediction performance is shown to be improved considerably in crowded frequency bands. The variation of prediction performance with prediction range and Doppler spectrum characteristics is investigated. For link adaptation, we derive the appropriate metric on which adaptation decisions should be used. The probability density function for this metric is derived for general MIMO channels. Link adaptation is studied for a single link system when channel prediction and estimation errors are present, both for uncoded systems and systems using large block codes with soft decoders. Various aspects of channel model acquisition are addressed by conducting studies on measured channels. Owing to the use of special matrix structures and fast convergence to time-invariant or periodic solutions, we find the Kalman filter complexity to be reasonable for future implementation. Finally, expressions for the impact of modelling errors are derived and used to study the impact of modelling errors on channel prediction performance in some example cases.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We investigate the importance of weak clusters when modeling a wireless massive MIMO channel. We do this by studying the influence of densely spaced terminals and the number of base-station antennas for a zero-forcing precoded massive MIMO system. In particular, we focus on the influence on the correlation and imbalance between the signals at the terminal antennas, the effective channel-gain, the eigenvalue distributions and the number of clusters. The study is based on measured radio-channels from terminal prototypes with integrated antennas connected to a massive MIMO testbed. We further evaluate the advantage of using block-diagonalized zero-forcing compared to conventional zero-forcing in a massive MIMO system. Unexpectedly, terminals with low antenna envelope correlation coefficient may benefit significantly from block-diagonal zero-forcing in a massive MIMO system. The main conclusion is that weaker clusters are important when modeling multi-user scenarios.

  • 2017
  • Ingår i: IEEE Access. - 2169-3536. ; 5, s. 26819-26831
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The recent interest in massive MIMO has spurred intensive work on massive MIMO channel modeling in contemporary literature. However, current models fail to take the characteristics of terminal antennas into account. There is no massive MIMO channel model available that can be used for evaluation of the influence of different antenna characteristics at the terminal side. In this paper, we provide a simulation framework that fills this gap. We evaluate the framework with antennas integrated into Sony Xperia handsets operating at 3.7 GHz as this spectrum is identified for the 5G new radio standard by 3GPP. The simulation results are compared with measured terminal performance when communicating with the Lund University’s massive MIMO testbed under the same loading conditions. Expressions are derived for comparison of the gain obtained from different diversity schemes computed from measured far-field antenna patterns. We conclude that the simulation framework yields results close to the measured ones and that the framework can be used for antenna evaluation for terminals in a practical precoded massive MIMO system.

    • The overall system performance of massive MIMO is improved by equipping user terminals with multiple antennas. In this paper, we investigate transceiver designs for the case of a single downlink stream and in particular, we study the uplink pilot design. Moreover, we study the consequences of channel estimation errors at the base-station, and to what extent a dual-antenna terminal can get access to relevant channel statistics for optimization of the pilot signal. Gain expressions for comparison of different designs are derived. We verify the analytic results based on antennas integrated into Sony-Xperia handsets measured with the Lund University massive MIMO testbed. The measurements are performed at frequencies <6GHz since this part of the spectrum is a candidate for NR standard according to 3GPP.

    • In massive MIMO systems the uplink pilot signalstransmitted by a terminal define the channel seen by the basestation. This gives the terminal some degree of freedom selectingan uplink pilot transmission strategy. In this paper, we investigatethe benefit of different pilot transmission strategies when increasingthe number of antennas in the terminal. Building on previouswork on a simulation framework for Multiple-antenna terminalsin 5G massive MIMO systems, this paper presents simulatedperformance results for various transmission schemes. The resultsare calibrated to reflect a real communication situation in a largeauditorium. Emulating the measurement set-up, we show that theframework can be tuned to generate channel distributions thatmatch measured data. Under generalized conditions, we performsimulations for different terminal transmission-strategies, bothrelated to single stream and multiple streams. All evaluations arebased on terminals with four antennas integrated into real SonyXperia smartphone-chassis, tuned to 3.7 GHz. The measurementsare conducted by using the Lund University Massive MIMOtestbed with its 100 antennas. The results clearly show theadvantage of increasing the antenna-count also at the terminalside in massive MIMO systems.

  • 2016
  • Ingår i: 2016 IEEE Global Communications Conference (GLOBECOM). - 9781509013289 - 9781509013296

    • In massive MIMO performance evaluations it is often assumed that the terminal has a single antenna. The combination of multiple antennas in a terminal and massive MIMO precoding at the base station side can further improve overall system performance. We present measurement results for multi antenna terminals operating in different transmission schemes and how they perform under varying loading conditions. Gain expressions are derived that enable easy comparison between the transmission schemes. The evaluation is performed on realistic antennas integrated into Sony Xperia handsets tuned to 3.7~GHz and operated together with the Lund University massive MIMO (LuMaMi) test bed. It is concluded that the approach used in today's mobile systems, where up link and down link are addressed independently, will not provide the best performance. The performance can be improved by the selection of transmission schemes optimized for massive MIMO.

    • The use of large-scale antenna arrays can bring substantial improvements both in energy and spectral efficiency. This paper presents an initial study of user equipment (UE) antenna performance based on prototypes for a massive MIMO test bed. Most publications in the massive MIMO area have assumed isotropic or dipole antenna behavior at the UE side. It is, however, of greatest interest to evaluate the impact of realistic antenna implementations and user loading on such systems. Antennas are integrated into realistic UE form factors. Simulations are carried out to evaluate system performance using the UE antenna behavior measured in a Satimo StarGate 64. Comparisons are made with ideal isotropic un-correlated antennas. The presented UEs are designed for the 3.7 GHz band used by the LuMaMi massive MIMO test bed at Lund University.

We used two different approaches for modeling the mobile movement, combined with a simple geometrical model for the MIMO channel. Three different particle filters were implemented for the position estimation. The results show that all three filters are able to achieve estimation accuracy required by Federal Communication Commission. The dimensionality of the particle filter state space is independent of the number of antenna elements, and it is possible to increase the number of antennas and use more sophisticated channel models without changing the filtering algorithms.

  • A Switched Array Sounder for Dynamic Millimeter-Wave Channel Characterization: Design, Implementation and Measurements
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: IEEE Transactions on Antennas and Propagation. - 0018-926X.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A prerequisite for the design and evaluation of wireless systems is the understanding of propagation channels. While abundant propagation knowledge exists for bands below 6 GHz, the same is not true for millimeter-wave frequencies. In this paper, we present the design, implementation and measurement-based verification of a re-configurable 27.5-29.5 GHz channel sounder. Based on the switched array principle, our design is capable of characterizing 128×256 dynamic double-directional dual-polarized channels with snapshot times of around 600 ms. This is in sharp contrast to measurement times on the order of tens-of-minutes of sounders by rotating horn antennas. The antenna arrays at both link ends are calibrated in an anechoic chamber with high angular sampling intervals of 3 degrees in azimuth and elevation domains, which enables de-embedding the system responses of the sounder from the propagation channels. This is complemented with a bandwidth of up to 2 GHz, i.e., nanosecond-level delay resolution. The short measurement times and stable radio frequency design facilitate real-time processing of the received wavefronts to enhance measurement dynamic range. After disclosing the sounder design and implementation, we demonstrate its capabilities by presenting a measurement campaign at 28 GHz in an indoor lab environment.

This paper investigates the development and deployment of mmWave massive MIMO systems in an in-flight cabin environment, from both system performance and hardware implementation aspects. Ray-tracing methods with realistic geometry coefficients captured from commercial airplane models are used to represent this in-door dense environment. A hardware-in-the-loop simulator running on the AMD/Xilinx PYNQ FPGA is leveraged to conduct fast design space exploration. The outcomes of our investigation provide insights and guidelines in strategies for implementing and deploying mmWave massive MIMO systems in-flight cabins, for instance, how to place and distribute access points to enhance coverage and serve quality and the appropriate quantization strategy balancing hardware cost and signal processing quality.

    • Massive multiple-input multiple-out (MIMO) is vital in millimeter-wave (mmWave) bands to obtain large array gains. However, there are practical challenges, such as high hardware cost and power consumption in such systems. A promising solution to these problems is to adopt a hybrid beamforming architecture. This architecture has a much lower number of transceiver (TRx) chains than the total antenna number, resulting in cost- and energy- efficient systems. In this demo, we present a real- time mmWave (28GHz) massive MIMO testbed with hybrid beamforming. This testbed has a 64- antenna/16-TRx unit for beam-selection, which can be expanded to larger array sizes in a modular way. For testing everything from baseband processing algorithms to scheduling and beam-selection in real propagation environment, we extend the capability of an existing 100-antenna/100-TRx massive MIMO testbed (below 6GHz), built upon software-defined radio technology, to a flexible mmWave massive MIMO system.

    • This paper presents LuMaMi28, a real-time 28GHz multi-user (MU) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) testbed. In this testbed, the base station has 16 transceiver chains with a fully-digital beamforming architecture (with different pre-coding algorithms) and simultaneously supports multiple user equipments (UEs) with spatial multiplexing. The UEs are equipped with a beam-switchable antenna array for real-time antenna selection where the one with the highest channel magnitude, out of four pre-defined beams, is selected. For the beam-switchable antenna array, we consider two kinds of UE antennas, with different beam-width and different peak-gain. Based on this testbed, we provide measurement results for millimeter-wave (mmWave) MU-MIMO performance in different real-life scenarios with static and mobile UEs. We explore the potential benefit of the mmWave MU-MIMO systems with antenna selection based on measured channel data, and discuss the performance results through real-time measurements.

  • 2019
  • Ingår i: 20th International Workshop on Signal Processing Advances in Wireless Communications, SPAWC 2019. - 9781538665282 ; 2019-July
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Millimeter-wave (mmWave) systems must overcome severe phase noise impairment to exploit its full advantage (e.g. high data rate). However, the estimation of phase noise combined with wireless channel requires not only high-computational complexity, but also does not guarantee a stable solution. In this paper, the fact that the coherence bandwidth of a mmWave system is much larger than those of conventional systems is exploited to acquire the knowledge regarding phase noise by linear estimator. The channel coefficients are assumed to be piecewise-constant over Ncb successive subcarriers within coherence bandwidth. Utilizing the coherence structure, we propose a new algorithm for phase noise compensation on orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems. Numerical results with phase noise generated as a Wiener process demonstrate that the proposed algorithm can provide improved performance even in severe phase noise environments.
