  • Global distribution of earthworm diversity
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Science. - : American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). - 0036-8075 .- 1095-9203. ; 366:6464, s. 480-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Soil organisms, including earthworms, are a key component of terrestrial ecosystems. However, little is known about their diversity, their distribution, and the threats affecting them. We compiled a global dataset of sampled earthworm communities from 6928 sites in 57 countries as a basis for predicting patterns in earthworm diversity, abundance, and biomass. We found that local species richness and abundance typically peaked at higher latitudes, displaying patterns opposite to those observed in aboveground organisms. However, high species dissimilarity across tropical locations may cause diversity across the entirety of the tropics to be higher than elsewhere. Climate variables were found to be more important in shaping earthworm communities than soil properties or habitat cover. These findings suggest that climate change may have serious implications for earthworm communities and for the functions they provide.

  • Activity in MCF-7 Estrogen-sensitive Breast Cancer Cells of Capsicodendrin from Cinnamosma fragrans
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Anticancer Research. - : International Institute of Anticancer Research. - 0250-7005 .- 1791-7530. ; 41:12, s. 5935-5944
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background/Aim: Effect of capsicodendrin on the NF-KB pathway was studied in MCF-7 cancer cells. Materials and Methods: The transcription factor assay was used to screen for NF-KB activity. The effect on IKK beta, ICAM-1, and caspase-7 were studied using western blot. Caspase-1 was studied using Promega Caspase-Glo (R) assay. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) were detected using the fluorescent probe DCFH-DA. The potentiometric dye JC-1 was used to assess mitochondrial membrane potential (Delta psi m) and the cell cycle was examined using a fluorescence-activated cell sorter. Results: NF-kappa B p65 inhibitory effect was IC50=8.6 mu M and cytotoxic activity was IC50=7.5 mu M. The upstream IKK and the downstream ICAM-1 were down-regulated. Sub G1-phase population increased to 81% after 12 h of treatment with capsicodendrin (10 mu M) and there was no loss of Delta psi M. Conclusion: Increased levels of intracellular ROS promoted activity of caspase-1 and induced cell death in MCF-7 cells. Capsicodendrin may be a future anticancer agent that prevents the progression of metastatic breast cancer.

  • Genetic loci influencing kidney function and chronic kidney disease
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Nature Genetics. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1546-1718 .- 1061-4036. ; 42:5, s. 373-375
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Using genome-wide association, we identify common variants at 2p12-p13, 6q26, 17q23 and 19q13 associated with serum creatinine, a marker of kidney function (P = 10(-10) to 10(-15)). Of these, rs10206899 (near NAT8, 2p12-p13) and rs4805834 (near SLC7A9, 19q13) were also associated with chronic kidney disease (P = 5.0 x 10(-5) and P = 3.6 x 10(-4), respectively). Our findings provide insight into metabolic, solute and drug-transport pathways underlying susceptibility to chronic kidney disease.

  • Beyond target chemicals : updating the NORMAN prioritisation scheme to support the EU chemicals strategy with semi-quantitative suspect/non-target screening data
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Environmental Sciences Europe. - : Springer Nature. - 2190-4707 .- 2190-4715. ; 36:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Prioritisation of chemical pollutants is a major challenge for environmental managers and decision-makers alike, which is essential to help focus the limited resources available for monitoring and mitigation actions on the most relevant chemicals. This study extends the original NORMAN prioritisation scheme beyond target chemicals, presenting the integration of semi-quantitative data from retrospective suspect screening and expansion of existing exposure and risk indicators. The scheme utilises data retrieved automatically from the NORMAN Database System (NDS), including candidate substances for prioritisation, target and suspect screening data, ecotoxicological effect data, physico-chemical data and other properties. Two complementary workflows using target and suspect screening monitoring data are applied to first group the substances into six action categories and then rank the substances using exposure, hazard and risk indicators. The results from the ‘target’ and ‘suspect screening’ workflows can then be combined as multiple lines of evidence to support decision-making on regulatory and research actions. Results: As a proof-of-concept, the new scheme was applied to a combined dataset of target and suspect screening data. To this end, > 65,000 substances on the NDS, of which 2579 substances supported by target wastewater monitoring data, were retrospectively screened in 84 effluent wastewater samples, totalling > 11 million data points. The final prioritisation results identified 677 substances as high priority for further actions, 7455 as medium priority and 326 with potentially lower priority for actions. Among the remaining substances, ca. 37,000 substances should be considered of medium priority with uncertainty, while it was not possible to conclude for 19,000 substances due to insufficient information from target monitoring and uncertainty in the identification from suspect screening. A high degree of agreement was observed between the categories assigned via target analysis and suspect screening-based prioritisation. Suspect screening was a valuable complementary approach to target analysis, helping to prioritise thousands of substances that are insufficiently investigated in current monitoring programmes. Conclusions: This updated prioritisation workflow responds to the increasing use of suspect screening techniques. It can be adapted to different environmental compartments and can support regulatory obligations, including the identification of specific pollutants in river basins and the marine environments, as well as the confirmation of environmental occurrence levels predicted by modelling tools. • Migration health research in the Nordic countries : priorities and implications for public health
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Public Health. - : Sage Publications. - 1403-4948 .- 1651-1905. ; 50:7, s. 1039-1046
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The past 50 years have witnessed an increase in immigration to the Nordic countries from and beyond neighbouring countries in Europe. Diversity implies variations and differences in health status and health outcomes both within and across populations. Migrant health research has not been prioritized and health policies and practice, especially long-term national plans, often exclude migrants. In this article, we briefly trace the history, the groups, reasons for migration and the road to migrant health research in Norway, Sweden, Finland and Denmark. We discuss the case for data and research including needs, basis for data collection and the methodological challenges. We provide a brief snapshot of migrant health research, identify current gaps and discuss the implications for research. We recommend a regional Nordic strategy to promote intercountry exchange, sharing and learning. Finally, we reflect on the larger picture, implications for policy and practice that could enable societal conditions to reduce avoidable health inequalities.

  • 2×2-slot Element for 60GHz Planar Array Antenna Realized on Two Doubled-sided PCBs Using SIW Cavity and EBG-type Soft Surface fed by Microstrip-Ridge Gap Waveguide
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: IEEE Transactions on Antennas and Propagation. - 0018-926X .- 1558-2221. ; 62:9, s. 4564 - 4573
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A wideband 2x2-slot element for a 60-GHz antenna array is designed by making use of two double-sided printed circuit boards (PCBs). The upper PCB contains the four radiating cavity-backed slots, where the cavity is formed in substrate-integrated waveguide (SIW) using metalized via holes. The SIW cavity is excited by a coupling slot. The excitation slot is fed by a microstrip-ridge gap waveguide formed in the air gap between the upper and lower PCBs. The lower PCB contains the microstrip line, being short-circuited to the ground plane of the lower PCB with via holes, and with additional metalized via holes alongside the microstrip line to form a stopband for parallel-platemodes in the air gap. The designed element can be used in large arrays with distribution networks realized in such microstrip-ridge gap waveguide technology. Therefore, the present paper describes a generic study in an infinite array environment, and performance is measured in terms of the active reflection coefficient S11 and the power lost in grating lobes. The study shows that the radiation characteristics of the array antenna is considerably improved by using a soft surface EBG-type SIW corrugation between each 2x2-slot element in E-plane to reduce the mutual coupling. The study is verified by measurements on a 4x4 element array surrounded by dummy elements and including a transition to rectangular waveguide WR15.

  • Hematopoietic stem-cell transplantation for advanced systemic mastocytosis
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Journal of Clinical Oncology. - 0732-183X .- 1527-7755. ; 32:29, s. 3264-3274
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • PURPOSE: Advanced systemic mastocytosis (SM), a fatal hematopoietic malignancy characterized by drug resistance, has no standard therapy. The effectiveness of allogeneic hematopoietic stem-cell transplantation (alloHCT) in SM remains unknown.PATIENTS AND METHODS: In a global effort to define the value of HCT in SM, 57 patients with the following subtypes of SM were evaluated: SM associated with clonal hematologic non-mast cell disorders (SM-AHNMD; n = 38), mast cell leukemia (MCL; n = 12), and aggressive SM (ASM; n = 7). Median age of patients was 46 years (range, 11 to 67 years). Donors were HLA-identical (n = 34), unrelated (n = 17), umbilical cord blood (n = 2), HLA-haploidentical (n = 1), or unknown (n = 3). Thirty-six patients received myeloablative conditioning (MAC), and 21 patients received reduced-intensity conditioning (RIC).RESULTS: Responses in SM were observed in 40 patients (70%), with complete remission in 16 patients (28%). Twelve patients (21%) had stable disease, and five patients (9%) had primary refractory disease. Overall survival (OS) at 3 years was 57% for all patients, 74% for patients with SM-AHNMD, 43% for those with ASM, and 17% for those with MCL. The strongest risk factor for poor OS was MCL. Survival was also lower in patients receiving RIC compared with MAC and in patients having progression compared with patients having stable disease or response.CONCLUSION: AlloHCT was associated with long-term survival in patients with advanced SM. Although alloHCT may be considered as a viable and potentially curative therapeutic option for advanced SM in the meantime, given that this is a retrospective analysis with no control group, the definitive role of alloHCT will need to be determined by a prospective trial.

  • Evaluation of food and nutrient intake assessment using concentration biomarkers in European adolescents from the HELENA study
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: British Journal of Nutrition. - 0007-1145 .- 1475-2662. ; 109:4, s. 736-747
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Accurate food and nutrient intake assessment is essential for investigating diet-disease relationships. In the present study, food and nutrient intake assessment among European adolescents using 24 h recalls (mean of two recalls) and a FFQ (separately and the combination of both) were evaluated using concentration biomarkers. Biomarkers included were vitamin C, β-carotene, DHA+EPA, vitamin B12 (cobalamin and holo-transcobalamin) and folate (erythrocyte folate and plasma folate). For the evaluation of the food intake assessment 390 adolescents were included, while 697 were included for the nutrient intake assessment evaluation. Spearman rank and Pearson correlations, and validity coefficients, which are correlations between intake estimated and habitual true intake, were calculated. Correlations were higher between frequency of food consumption (from the FFQ) and concentration biomarkers than between mean food intake (from the recalls) and concentration biomarkers, especially for DHA+EPA (r 0·35 v. r 0·27). Most correlations were higher among girls than boys. For boys, the highest validity coefficients were found for frequency of fruit consumption (0·88) and for DHA+EPA biomarker (0·71). In girls, the highest validity coefficients were found for fruit consumption frequency (0·76), vegetable consumption frequency (0·74), mean fruit intake (0·90) and DHA+EPA biomarker (0·69). After exclusion of underreporters, correlations slightly improved. Correlations between usual food intakes, adjusted for food consumption frequency, and concentration biomarkers were higher than correlations between mean food intakes and concentration biomarkers. In conclusion, two non-consecutive 24 h recalls in combination with a FFQ seem to be appropriate to rank subjects according to their usual food intake

  • A 50 dBi E-Band Dual-reflector Antenna for 5G Backhauling with Auto-beam-tracking Function
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: IEEE Transactions on Antennas and Propagation. - 0018-926X .- 1558-2221. ; 72:6, s. 4874-4887
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • An ultra-high-gain E-band dual-reflector antenna for 5G backhaul with beam tracking function is proposed in this paper. Beam tracking is achieved by defocussing the feed away from the focus point of the sub-reflector, while keeping the interface with the transmit-receive unit stationary by applying a movable gap-waveguide configuration. The antenna has been prototyped and measured. The measured reflection coefficients remain below –10 dB for both horizontal and vertical polarizations over 71 – 86 GHz, almost independent from the offset positions of the feed. The measured radiation patterns agree well with the simulated ones, with a peak gain of about 50 dBi in the band and less than 1 dB gain drop for beam steering within ±2°. Finally, a low-cost and environmentally friendly mechanical tracking system is proposed, prototyped, and tested. Measurements have verified that the tracking system functions well for slow sways.
