  • Isomeric Ratios in 206Hg
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Acta Physica Polonica. Series B: Elementary Particle Physics, Nuclear Physics, Statistical Physics, Theory of Relativity, Field Theory. - 0587-4254. ; 46:3, s. 601-605
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Hg-206 was populated in the fragmentation of an E/A = 1 GeV Pb-208 beam at GSI. It was part of a campaign to study nuclei around Pb-208 via relativistic Coulomb excitation. The observation of the known isomeric states confirmed the identification of the fragmentation products. The isomeric decays were also used to prove that the correlations between beam identification detectors and the AGATA gamma-ray tracking array worked properly and that the tracking efficiency was independent of the time relative to the prompt flash.

  • TASISpec - A Highly Efficient Multi-coincidence Spectrometer for Nuclear Structure Investigations of the Heaviest Nuclei
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Instruments & Methods in Physics Research. Section A: Accelerators, Spectrometers, Detectors, and Associated Equipment. - : Elsevier BV. - 0167-5087 .- 0168-9002. ; 622:1, s. 164-170
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • TASISpec (TASCA in Small Image mode Spectroscopy) combines composite Ge- and Si-detectors for a new detector setup aimed towards multi-coincidence gamma -ray, X-ray, conversion electron, fission fragment, and a-particle spectroscopy of the heaviest nuclei. It exploits the TASCA separator's unique small image focal mode, i.e. the fact that evaporation residues produced in fusion-evaporation reactions can be focused into an area of less than 3 cm in diameter. This provides the possibility to pack detectors in very close geometry, resulting in an unprecedented detection efficiency of radioactive decays in prompt and delayed coincidence with implanted nuclei. • Analysis of charged particle emission sources and coalescence in E/A=61 (MeVAr)-Ar-36+Al-27, Sn-112 and Sn-124 collisions
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Physics, Section A. - : Elsevier BV. - 0375-9474. ; 736:1-2, s. 22-38
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Single-particle kinetic energy spectra and two-particle small angle correlations of protons (p), deuterons (d) and tritons (t) have been measured simultaneously in 61 A MeV Ar-36 + Al-27, Sn-112 and Sn-124 collisions. Characteristics of the emission sources have been derived from a "source identification plot" (beta(source)-E-CM plot), constructed from the single-particle invariant spectra, and compared to the complementary results from two-particle correlation functions. Furthermore, the source identification plot has been used to determine the conditions when the coalescence mechanism can be applied for composite particles. In our data, this is the case only for the Ar + Al reaction, where p, d and t are found to originate from a common source of emission (from the overlap region between target and projectile). In this case, the coalescence model parameter, (p) over tilde (0)-the radius of the complex particle emission source in momentum space, has been analyzed.

  • Energy calibration of CsI(T1) scintillator in pulse-shape identification technique
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Instruments & Methods in Physics Research. Section A: Accelerators, Spectrometers, Detectors, and Associated Equipment. - 0167-5087. ; 501:2-3, s. 505-513
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A batch of 16 CsI(TI) scintillator crystals, supplied by the Bicron Company, has been studied with respect to precise energy calibration in pulse-shape identification technique. The light corresponding to pulse integration within the time interval 1.6-4.5 mus (long gate) and 0.0-4.5 mus (extra-long gate) exhibits a power law relation, L(E, Z, A) a1 (Z, A)Ea2(Z-4), for (1.2.3) H isotopes in the measured energy range 5-150 MeV. For the time interval 0.0-0.60 mus (short gate), a significant deviation from the power law relation is observed, for energy greater than similar to30 MeV. The character of the a2(p)-a2(d) and a2(p)-a2(t) correlations for protons, deuterons and tritons, reveals 3 types of crystals in the batch. These subbatches differ in the value of the extracted parameter a2 for protons, and in the value of the spread of a2 for deuterons and tritons. This may be explained by the difference in the energy dependence of the fast decay time component and/or by the difference in the light output ratio of the fast/slow components. An accuracy well inside 1.0% is achieved in the energy calibration of the CsI(TI) crystals by using the DeltaE(Si) E(CsI(Tl))/PMT method. The batch of 16 CsI(TI) crystals is utilized to measure the correlations of light charged particles produced in E/A = 61 MeV, (36)Arinduced reactions. The preliminary correlation functions for two protons with small relative momenta are presented. (C) 2003 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

  • Low-lying electric dipole gamma-continuum for the unstable Fe-62,64 nuclei : Strength evolution with neutron number
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Physics Letters B. - : ELSEVIER. - 0370-2693 .- 1873-2445. ; 811
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The gamma-ray emission from the nuclei Fe-62,Fe-64 following Coulomb excitation at bombarding energy of 400-440 AMeV was measured with special focus on E1 transitions in the energy region 4-8 MeV. The unstable neutron-rich nuclei Fe-62,Fe-64 were produced at the FAIR-GSI laboratories and selected with the FRS spectrometer. The gamma decay was detected with AGATA. From the measured gamma-ray spectra the summed E1 strength is extracted and compared to microscopic quasi-particle phonon model calculations. The trend of the E1 strength with increasing neutron number is found to be fairly well reproduced with calculations that assume a rather complex structure of the 1(-) states (three-phonon states) inducing a strong fragmentation of the E1 nuclear response below the neutron binding energy.

  • Hydrogen analysis and profiling with a position sensitive detector
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Instruments & Methods in Physics Research. Section B: Beam Interactions with Materials and Atoms. - : Elsevier BV. - 0168-583X. ; 306, s. 49-53
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The double sided silicon strip detector (DSSSD) is a segmented silicon detector commonly used in the fields of high energy physics and nuclear physics. This type of detector is used for analysis of reactions produced by charged particles. This makes it well suited for a number of analytical methods commonly used in ion beam analysis (IBA), such as Rutherford Backscattering (RBS) and elastic recoil detection (ERDA). One such detector was installed and tested at Lund Ion Beam Analysis Facility (LIBAF) recently. This is a modification to the existing setup used to measure hydrogen concentrations and depth profiles. When completed it will be used primarily for geological applications. Exact knowledge of the hydrogen content is important in a number of fields, but high enough accuracy can be difficult to achieve with most methods. In IBA normally some variant of ERDA, such as the proton-proton (p-p) coincidence method is used. We describe how the p-p coincidence technique was optimized to get the most out of our experimental setup. Previously this type of spectroscopy has been performed with two detector channels. In the present setup we expand that number from 2 to 96 channels, 64 on the front and 32 on the back of the detector. The intersecting strips give 2048 distinct detector elements or 1024 possible coincidences as dictated by the reaction kinematics. This increase in complexity requires a more detailed data analysis but it rewards us with higher sensitivity and a better background suppression. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

  • Optimization of O-18 measurement using NRA for studies of isotopic content in fossil meteorites
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research Section B: Beam Interactions with Materials and Atoms. - : Elsevier BV. - 0168-583X. ; 269:20, s. 2229-2232
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this work, we discuss the possibility of a new approach to measuring oxygen isotope ratios in fossil meteorite samples, specifically one based on nuclear reaction analysis (NRA). Variations of oxygen ratios within meteoritic chromite grains can help to determine the type of meteorite to which the grains originally belonged. In this work, we have evaluated the possibility to use the reaction O-18(p, alpha)N-15 just above the 846 keV resonance to estimate the relative oxygen-18 content in a number of test samples. Another technique has to be employed for oxygen-16 measurements. A large area segmented silicon detector is used to detect the produced alpha particles. Results of the experimental O-18 measurements for a number of samples including four extraterrestrial chromite grains are presented and compared with SIMNRA simulations. The advantage of a segmented silicon detector in the form of inherent pile-up suppression can be clearly seen in the current work. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Atoms. - 2218-2004. ; 11:9
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • High-spin nuclear isomers in N≈Z nuclei between doubly magic 40Ca and 56Ni provide an excellent testing ground for the nuclear shell model and questions related to isospin symmetry breaking in the vicinity of the proton drip line. The purpose of the present study is to investigate the possibility of weak electromagnetic decay branches along the decay paths of the 6526-keV 10+ isomer in 54Fe. The isomer was strongly populated by means of the fusion-evaporation reaction 24Mg(36Ar,α2p)54?Fe. The Gammasphere array was used to detect γ-ray cascades emitted from the isomeric state. By means of γγγ coincidences, weak non-yrast decay branches can be discriminated, with the isomer’s half-life confirmed at T1/2 =363(4) ns. The yrast 6+1→2+1 E4 cross-over transition was interrogated. The observations are compared with shell-model calculations.

  • Beyond the neutron drip line: The unbound oxygen isotopes O-25 and O-26
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C - Nuclear Physics. - 2469-9985 .- 2469-9993 .- 0556-2813. ; 88:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The very neutron-rich oxygen isotopes O-25 and O-26 are investigated experimentally and theoretically. The unbound states are populated in an experiment performed at the R3B-LAND setup at GSI via proton-knockout reactions from F-26 and F-27 at relativistic energies around 442 and 414 MeV/nucleon, respectively. From the kinematically complete measurement of the decay into O-24 plus one or two neutrons, the O-25 ground-state energy and width are determined, and upper limits for the O-26 ground-state energy and lifetime are extracted. In addition, the results provide indications for an excited state in O-26 at around 4 MeV. The experimental findings are compared to theoretical shell-model calculations based on chiral two- and three-nucleon (3N) forces, including for the first time residual 3N forces, which are shown to be amplified as valence neutrons are added.

  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Ambio: a Journal of Human Environment. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0044-7447 .- 1654-7209. ; 40, s. 32-45
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Snow cover plays a major role in the climate, hydrological and ecological systems of the Arctic and other regions through its influence on the surface energy balance (e.g. reflectivity), water balance (e.g. water storage and release), thermal regimes (e.g. insulation), vegetation and trace gas fluxes. Feedbacks to the climate system have global consequences. The livelihoods and well-being of Arctic residents and many services for the wider population depend on snow conditions so changes have important consequences. Already, changing snow conditions, particularly reduced summer soil moisture, winter thaw events and rain-on-snow conditions have negatively affected commercial forestry, reindeer herding, some wild animal populations and vegetation. Reductions in snow cover are also adversely impacting indigenous peoples' access to traditional foods with negative impacts on human health and well-being. However, there are likely to be some benefits from a changing Arctic snow regime such as more even run-off from melting snow that favours hydropower operations.

  • The Changing Face of Arctic Snow Cover: A Synthesis of Observed and Projected Changes
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Ambio: a Journal of Human Environment. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0044-7447. ; 40, s. 17-31
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Analysis of in situ and satellite data shows evidence of different regional snow cover responses to the widespread warming and increasing winter precipitation that has characterized the Arctic climate for the past 40-50 years. The largest and most rapid decreases in snow water equivalent (SWE) and snow cover duration (SCD) are observed over maritime regions of the Arctic with the highest precipitation amounts. There is also evidence of marked differences in the response of snow cover between the North American and Eurasian sectors of the Arctic, with the North American sector exhibiting decreases in snow cover and snow depth over the entire period of available in situ observations from around 1950, while widespread decreases in snow cover are not apparent over Eurasia until after around 1980. However, snow depths are increasing in many regions of Eurasia. Warming and more frequent winter thaws are contributing to changes in snow pack structure with important implications for land use and provision of ecosystem services. Projected changes in snow cover from Global Climate Models for the 2050 period indicate increases in maximum SWE of up to 15% over much of the Arctic, with the largest increases (15-30%) over the Siberian sector. In contrast, SCD is projected to decrease by about 10-20% over much of the Arctic, with the smallest decreases over Siberia (<10%) and the largest decreases over Alaska and northern Scandinavia (30-40%) by 2050. These projected changes will have far-reaching consequences for the climate system, human activities, hydrology, and ecology.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • (CHICSi) Celsius Heavy Ion Collaboration Si detector system is a high granularity, modular detector telescope array for operation around the cluster-jet target/circulating beam intersection of the CELSIUS storage ring at the The. Svedberg Laboratory in Uppsala, Sweden. It is able to provide identity and momentum vector of up to 100 charged particles and fragments from proton-nucleus and nucleus-nucleus collisions at intermediate energies, 50-1000A MeV. All detector telescopes as well as the major part of electronic readout system are placed inside the target chamber in ultra-high vacuum (UHV, 10(-9)-10(-7) Pa). This requires Very Large Scale Integrated (VLSI) microchip for the spectroscopic signal processing and the generation and transport of digital control signals. Eighteen telescopes, read out with chip-on-board technique by ceramics Mother Boards (MB) and corresponding 18 microchips are mounted on a 450 x 45 mm(2) Grand Mother Board (GMB), processed on FR4 glass-fibre material. Each of these 28 GMB units contains a daisy-chain organisation of the VLSI chips and associated protection circuits. Analogue-to-digital conversion of the spectroscopic signals is performed on a board outside the chamber which is connected on one side to a power distribution board, directly attached to a UHV mounting flange, and on the other side to the VME-based data acquisition system (CHICSiDAQ). This in its turn is connected via a fibre-optic link to the general TSL acquisition system (SVEDAQ), and in this way data from auxiliary detector systems, read out in CAMAC mode, can be stored in coincidence with CHICSi data.

  • Ingår i: Nuclear Physics, Section A. - : Elsevier BV. - 0375-9474. ; 764, s. 15-23
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Dynamical and statistical fragment emission processes in 200 A MeV Ne-20 + Ar-40 collisions are well probed by measurements of charge (Z), mass (A) and momentum vector ((p) over right arrow) of all fragments in large parts of the available momentum space. We present such data obtained at the cluster-jet target of the CELSIUS storage ring, for the first time with an internal, ultra-high vacuum (UHV) compatible detector system (CHICSi). Energy and angular dependence in Z and A distributions are not reproduced by a single-step model, e.g., those based on molecular dynamics (MD), but require a complete three-step model. We use here the intranuclear cascade+ statistical multifragmentation + secondary evaporation model (CFEM). The angular dependence of isobaric ratios, like He-6/Li-6 at low emission velocities and temperatures extracted from isotopic (double) ratios, do exhibit differences, even from this model. These differences, which call for adjustment of model parameters, are discussed. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

    • A small-scale prototype of the CALIFA calorimeter, which is a subsystem of the R 3 B detector, has been constructed and tested using the 179 MeV proton beam at The Svedberg Laboratory, Uppsala, Sweden. The prototype consists of 15 Csl(Tl) elements with a size of 10 x 30 x 130 mm(3), assembled in a 3 x 5 array. Each crystal was individually tested using gamma-ray sources and the light output uniformity along the longitudinal axes was adjusted to better than 0.6%. An energy resolution of similar to 0.5% has been achieved with a technique consisting of non-uniform polishing/lapping of the crystal side facets. The performance of the prototype is evaluated using experimental data and GEANT4 simulations. Results from the experiment, including multiplicity and sum spectra, show good agreement with simulations. The quality requirements for Csl(Tl) elements for construction of a high precision calorimeter/spectrometer are summarized. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • To identify the atomic number of superheavy nuclei produced in Ca-48-induced fusion-evaporation reactions, an experiment aiming at measuring characteristic X-rays is being prepared at GSI, Darmstadt, Germany. The gas-filled separator TASCA will be employed, sending the residues towards the multi-coincidence detector setup TASISpec. Two ion-optical modes relying on differing magnetic polarities of the quadrupole magnets can be used at TASCA. New simulations and experimental tests of transmission and background suppression for these two focusing modes into TASISpec are presented.

    • Nuclides that are considered to be isotopes of element Z = 115 were produced in the reaction 48Ca + 243Am at the GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung Darmstadt. The detector setup TASISpec was used. It was mounted behind the gas-filled separator TASCA. Thirty correlated α-decay chains were found, and the energies of the particles were determined with high precision. Two important spectroscopic aspects of the offline data analysis are discussed in detail: the handling of digitized preamplified signals from the silicon strip detectors, and the energy reconstruction of particles escaping to upstream detectors relying on pixel-by-pixel dead-layer thicknesses.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present the details of an experiment on light particle interferometry. In particular, we focus on a time-of-flight technique which uses a cyclotron RF signal as a start and a liquid scintillator time signal as a stop, to measure neutron energy in the range of En approximate to 1.8-150 MeV. This dynamic range (up to 300 ns) is much larger than the beam bunch separation (54 ns) of the AGOR cyclotron (KVI). However, the problem of a short burst period is overcome by using the time information obtained from a fast projectile fragment phoswich detector. The complete analysis procedure to extract the final neutron kinetic energy spectra, is discussed. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
