  • Persistent LTP without triggered protein synthesis.
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Neuroscience research. - : Elsevier BV. - 0168-0102. ; 63:1, s. 59-65
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Protein synthesis is believed to be involved in stabilizing synaptic plasticity. Effects lasting longer than about 2-3h are considered to require synthesis of new proteins, implying a functional separation between early (E) and late (L) components. However, the issue of constitutive vs. new protein synthesis is still unclear, especially in young animals. Here, we examined the effects of two protein synthesis inhibitors, anisomycin and emetine, on long-term-potentiation (LTP) in CA1 area of hippocampal slices from 12- to 20-day-old rats. Either drug was applied from -30 min to +30 min with respect to LTP induction, a time window previously reported to be critical. However, the LTP remained stable under the entire recording period of 4h (anisomycin), or 8h (emetine). Proper preparation of emetine solution was evidenced by the fact that, in separate experiments, prolonged treatment with emetine gradually blocked baseline responses. Although no corresponding effect was observed with anisomycin, the drug was judged to be potent by its ability to inhibit yeast growth. The ability of anisomycin to inhibit protein synthesis was further confirmed by radiolabeling experiments assessing the degree of leucine incorporation. Our data suggest that LTP up to at least 8h is not dependent on triggered protein synthesis but can be attained by utilizing proteins already available at induction time.

  • On the energy gap determination of organic optoelectronic materials : the case of porphyrin derivatives
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Materials Advances. - : Royal Society of Chemistry. - 2633-5409. ; :3, s. 1791-1803
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The correct determination of the ionization potential (IP) and electron affinity (EA) as well as the energy gap is essential to properly characterize a series of key phenomena related to the applications of organic semiconductors. For example, energy offsets play an essential role in charge separation in organic photovoltaics. Yet there has been a lot of confusion involving the real physical meaning behind those quantities. Experimentally the energy gap can be measured by direct techniques such as UV-Vis absorption, or indirect techniques such as cyclic voltammetry (CV). Another spectroscopic method is the Reflection Electron Energy Loss Spectroscopy (REELS). Regarding data correlation, there is little consensus on how the REELS' energy gap can be interpreted in light of the energies obtained from other methodologies such as CV, UV-Vis, or photoemission. In addition, even data acquired using those traditional techniques has been misinterpreted or applied to derive conclusions beyond the limits imposed by the physics of the measurement. A similar situation also happens when different theoretical approaches are used to assess the energy gap or employed to explain outcomes from experiments. By using a set of porphyrin derivatives as model molecules, we discuss some key aspects of those important issues. The peculiar properties of these porphyrins demonstrate that even straightforward measurements or calculations performed in a group of very similar molecules need a careful interpretation of the outcomes. Differences up to 660 meV (similar to 190 meV) are found comparing REELS (electrochemical) measurements with UV-Vis energy gaps, for instance. From the theoretical point of view, a reasonable agreement with electrochemical measurements of the IP, EA, and the gap of the porphyrins is only obtained when the calculations involve the full thermodynamics of the redox processes. The purpose of this work is to shed light on the differences and similarities of those aforementioned characterization methods and provide some insight that might help one to develop a critical analysis of the different experimental and theoretical methodologies.

  • Symmetric Small-Molecules With Acceptor-Donor-Acceptor Architecture for Efficient Visible-Light Driven Hydrogen Production : Optical and Thermodynamic Aspects
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: The Journal of Physical Chemistry C. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 1932-7447 .- 1932-7455. ; 123:51, s. 30799-30808
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Small-molecules (SM) have attracted a great deal of attention in the field of solar energy conversion due to their unique propertiescompared to polymers, such as well-defined molecular weight and lack of regio-isomeric impurities. Furthermore, these materials can be synthesized in a variety of configurational architectures, representing an opportunity for tailoring chemical and optical properties that could lead to a better photocatalytic efficiency for hydrogen generation. Here, we evaluate by means of density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT methods a set of small-molecules with A-D-A architecture (A-acceptor; D- donor) based on well-known building blocks like thiophene (T), cyclopentadithiophene (CPT) and benzothiadiazole (BT) as potential candidates for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). We also propose i) the replacement of the thiophene unit by 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene (EDOT) to form with CPT unit an extended donor core ii) an additional acceptor unit, the 1,3,4-thiadiazole (Tz), in the extremities and iii) insertion of the difluoromethoxy (DFM) as substituent in the BT unit. Our outcomes reveal that these materials have a broad absorption spectrum with λ= 318-719 nm, being the most intense absorption peak originated from an electronic transition with charge-transfer nature, as the spatial distribution of LUMO is concentrated on the acceptor units for all materials. Moreover, these small-molecules not only present catalytic power or thermodynamic driving force to carry out the chemical reactions involved in the process of hydrogen production, but can be coupled in cooperative photocatalytic systems to promote intramolecular charge transfer that is expected to boost the overall photocatalytic efficiency of these materials.

  • Technology and Gender in Early Childhood Education : How Girls and Boys Explore and Learn Technology in Free Play in Swedish Preschools
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Technology Education in the 21st Century. - Linköping : Linköping University Electronic Press. - 9789175198491 ; , s. 163-171

    • The preschool is the first institutional context that Swedish children meet in their lives, and it therefore plays a very important role in the Swedish welfare state. As of 1998, preschools were part of the public school system and the first curriculum was then adopted. In the new curriculum for the preschool (2010) technology is emphasized as one of the most significant pedagogical areas to work with. In many countries the preschool age is seen as an important time for laying the foundations for interest in and knowledge about technology, since it is believed that the children’s curiosity comes naturally. It is thus seen as a crucial age to get both boys and girls interested in technology. Although research on technology education in the preschool is lacking to a great extent, existing research largely confirms these views. The aim of this paper is to investigate how girls and boys explore and learn technology in free play in two Swedish preschools. The empirical study is inspired by an ethnographic approach and is based on qualitative data collected through observations and informal talk with children and teachers. Two preschools with children one to five years old were chosen for the study.Today’s society places high demands on the individual in terms of ability to acquire understanding of and knowledge about technology. One of the visions of the 2010 Governmental committee Teknikdelegationen was a Swedish society that provides all its citizens with the competence needed to understand, profit by and influence the development of an increasingly complex and technologically advanced society. Hence the committee emphasized that knowledge about technology must be disseminated early on, already in the preschool, and technology should be an important feature throughout the education system (Teknikdelegationen, 2010, p. 26-27). A clear majority of Swedish children now attend the preschool, although it is not mandatory. The preschool is consequently the first institutional context that Swedish children meet in their lives, and it therefore plays a very important role in the Swedish welfare state. As of 1998, preschools were part of the public school system and the first curriculum was then adopted. In the new curriculum for the preschool (2010) technology is emphasized as one of the most significant pedagogical areas to work with. In many countries the preschool age is seen as an important time for laying the foundations for knowledge about and interest in technology, since it is believed that the children’s curiosity comes naturally (Axell, 2012). It is thus seen as a crucial age to get both boys and girls interested in technology. Although research on technology education in the preschool is lacking to a great extent, existing research largely confirms these views (see, for example, Parker-Rees, 1997).The aim of this paper is to investigate how girls and boys explore and learn technology in free play in two Swedish preschools. The empirical study is inspired by an ethnographic approach and is based on qualitative data collected through observations and informal talk with children and teachers. • Ingår i: NorDiNa. - Oslo : Nasjonalt senter for naturfag i opplæringen. - 1504-4556 .- 1894-1257. ; 14:1, s. 37-53
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In recent years technology has become increasingly emphasized as educational content in the Swedish preschool, not the least with the introduction of the latest curriculum in 2010 (revised in 2016). Since preschool teachers have not had any formal technology education until just recently, it is of importance to investigate how they conceive of and experience technology in the daily activities of the preschool. The purpose of this study is therefore to describe and analyze Swedish preschool teachers’ views and experiences of technology and technology education in the preschool, focusing on what opportunities and obstacles that they see. The data consists of transcripts from focus group interviews with sixteen teachers in two Swedish preschools, and the data was coded and categorized with a thematic analysis. The results show that when it comes to opportunities, the teachers consider technology to permeate all preschool activities, and the challenge here is rather to make technology visible. In terms of obstacles, however, the teachers are also uncertain about what technology is and want to have more knowledge of technology themselves, for example, relevant concepts for various technologies or activities. They also want to know more about technology education in order to be able to educationally convey knowledge of technology to the children and to make the children conscious of the technology that surrounds them.

  • Surface-induced vertical alignment of self-assembled supramolecular columns of large polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and porphyrins
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Synthetic metals. - : Elsevier BV. - 0379-6779 .- 1879-3290. ; 147:01-Mar, s. 79-83
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Ordered films of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and porphyrins with functional (e.g. thiophene) side-groups are good candidates for (opto-)electronic applications where fast charge separation and transport are required. Such highly ordered thin films of PAHs, including discotic hexa-peri-hexabenzocoronene (HBC) and C-132-C-16,C-4, as well as brominated functionalized porphyrin molecules have been grown from solutions on semi-metallic molybdenum disulfide substrates and characterized by angle-resolved valence band photoelectron spectroscopy. A vertical growth of self-assembled supramolecular columns perpendicular to the basal plane of the substrate along with their lateral ordering on the surface has been achieved. Annealing made it possible to increase the structural order in the HBC columns, with molecules positioned at a regular offset from the columnar axis. This permitted the formation of extended pi-electronic states with a bandwidth of at least 0.1-0.2 eV at room temperature. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

  • Ingår i: International journal of technology and design education. - : Springer. - 0957-7572 .- 1573-1804. ; 25:2, s. 137-149
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the new Swedish curriculum for the preschool (2010) technology education is emphasized as one of the most significant pedagogical areas to work with. The aim of this article is to investigate how girls and boys explore and learn technology as well as how their teachers frame this in free play in two Swedish preschools. The study is inspired by an ethnographic approach and is based on qualitative data collected through video-taped observations and informal talk with children and teachers in two preschools. It is concluded that girls and boys learn to approach and handle technology differently, thereby confirming rather than dissolving gender boundaries. The girls more often have a special purpose in building something they need in their play, that is, they mostly engage in technological construction as a sideline. The boys, on the other hand, more often award technological construction a central part in their play; building is an end in itself. Teachers are not so active in supporting free play involving technology among the older children, nor in giving boys and girls equal opportunities to explore and use material and toys which are not gender-stereotyped. One important implication is that in-service education needs to address not only experiments and construction but also gender issues and how teachers can create equal opportunities for boys and girls in the free play.

  • Left ventricular systolic dysfunction in outpatients with peripheral atherosclerotic vascular disease : prevalence and association with location of arterial disease
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Heart Failure. - : Wiley. - 1388-9842 .- 1879-0844. ; 16:6, s. 625-632
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Aims: We aimed to determine the prevalence of left ventricular systolic dysfunction (LVSD) in outpatients with peripheral atherosclerotic vascular disease (PAVD). Further, the associations of stenotic internal carotid artery disease (SICAD) and lower extremity artery disease (LEAD) with LVSD were evaluated. Methods and results: In the Peripheral Artery Disease in Vastmanland study, consecutive outpatients with ultrasonographically identified mild to severe stenosis in the internal carotid artery or symptoms of claudication combined with either ankle brachial index of 0.90 or ultrasonographic occlusive findings were included (n=437). Population-based control subjects were matched to the patients (n=395). LVSD was defined as echocardiographically determined left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) <55%, and moderate or greater LVSD was defined as LVEF <45%. The prevalence of LVSD was significantly greater in patients than in controls (13.7% vs. 6.1%, P<0.001). The prevalence of moderate or greater LVSD in participants not on treatment with a combination of angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor and beta-blocker was 2.3% in patients and 1.3% in controls (P=0.31). When LEAD and SICAD were analysed together, adjusted for potential confounders, SICAD [odds ratio (OR) 2.54, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.03-6.32], but not LEAD (OR 1.59, 95% CI 0.80-3.18), was independently associated with LVSD.Conclusions: In outpatients with PAVD, we found a 13.7% prevalence of LVSD. However, the prevalence of at least moderate LVSD in patients not on treatment with angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor and a beta-blocker was only 2.3% and not significantly different from controls. Stenotic artery disease in the internal carotid artery, but not in the lower extremities, was independently associated with LVSD.

  • A point with pointsification? Clarifying and separating pointsification from gamification in education
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Frontiers in Education. - : Frontiers Media S.A.. - 2504-284X. ; 8
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Gamification gained popularity in the 2010s, with educational professionals quickly adopting it as a way to transfer the motivational effects of games to a learning situation. However, the rapid implementation of gamification without proper planning led to a misunderstanding of the concept, namely that the use of points and rewards is enough. Proper gamification in education requires careful planning and a game-thinking approach to the design of the learning environment. The simple addition of points and badges is therefore a misuse of the gamification concept, which has been referred to as pointsification. This misuse leads to confusion and mixed results as studies using pointsification are often still labeled as gamification. This paper clarifies the differences and uses of gamification and pointsification by analyzing the effects of pointsification in a higher education course and discussing these effects in relation to gamification. The research employs a mixed-methods approach, examining project grades, individual grades, and students' opinions. The objective is to show how pointsification can be implemented in education to lead to better learning in a way that both prevents previously identified problems associated with pointsification and also addresses them effectively. Although the use of points and badges has received criticism, studies have also demonstrated that pointsification can improve student engagement and motivation. As such, pointsification should be considered a distinct concept that focuses solely on the use of points and rewards to motivate students, while gamification should encompass a broader game-thinking approach.

  • 2022
  • Ingår i: 2022 IEEE Frontiers in Education Conference (FIE). - : IEEE. - 9781665462440 - 9781665462457
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this research to practice full paper we describe our implementation of CoI (Community of Inquiry). CoI is a framework for designing an effective online learning environment. It originates from Charles Sanders Pierce’s ideas that knowledge can only be created in a community through inquiry. We applied the framework in a highly interactive course that was forced to be held online because of the pandemic. The theoretical core of the course is cognitive psychology, a topic considered difficult to learn in a short time. Besides describing our implementation, we evaluate the results of the students’ inquiries and compare it with results from the previous year when we did not use CoI for this part of the course. Our findings show that the most important instructional strategy is to facilitate for students to work individually according to a scientific inquiry and then, in a community, use the knowledge gained in critical discourse to build an overall understanding. When the students worked according to this, the results exceeded our expectations, both regarding the depth of understanding and ability to apply the knowledge in ongoing course projects. Because more teaching will likely take place at a distance in the future, as a side effect of the pandemic, we believe that this could be a way to meet an increasing demand for online instruction, especially when designing educational settings for complex theoretical content.

  • Skadestånd vid patentintrång
  • 2014
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Damages are generally considered to be the most central and important sanction for patent infringement, as they are the patent holder’s only opportunity to be financially compensated for losses suffered as a result of infringement. As patent has become increasingly important in line with rapid economic and technological development in society, the sanctions – including damages – have also received more attention, both nationally and internationally. The party seeking damages must, according to general rules of procedure and evidence, be fully able to “prove” that some sort of loss has occurred, that the loss extends to the amount being claimed in damages, and that the loss was caused by the patent infringement. In practice, this has proven very difficult for the patent holder. The aim of this dissertation is to examine the effectiveness of damages in patent infringement cases. In order to analyse damages as a sanction for patent infringement, what problems there are, and what solutions may be possible, the dissertation addresses both damages as a sanction and the patent litigation process with a special focus on evidence. What purpose imposed damages for patent infringement serve and whether it is possible to calculate if patent infringement is profitable are some of the questions answered. Other issues concerning alternative calculation methods and the possibility of punitive damages for deliberate infringement are also discussed. One section analyses the need for evidence relief rules with a relatively comprehensive de lege ferenda argument regarding the possibility of changing current evidence rules and which alternative solutions might then be considered. Concrete suggestions for change and improvement are presented. The dissertation also addresses problems with the current dispute resolution system within patent law. In particular, it analyses the efficiency of the litigation process, including potential changes intended to deal with the long, complex, and costly patent litigation processes.

    • Background: The South Swedish Pneumococcal Intervention Project (SSPIP) was started in 1995 with the aim of limiting the spread of penicillin-non-susceptible pneumococci (PNSP) in Skåne County, Sweden. As part of the SSPIP, eradication therapy with rifampicin in combination with 1 more antibiotic was considered on a social indication after prolonged carriage of 2-3 months. Methods: In this retrospective study, 125 medical records were analyzed. Children aged 0-10 y referred for eradication therapy in Malmö and Lund, due to a prolonged nasopharyngeal carriage of PNSP with a penicillin G minimum inhibitory concentration of ≥ 0.5 mg/l, between the y 1997 and 2011 were included. Two consecutive negative cultures, with the second one no shorter than 7 days after treatment completion, were required for the carriage to be considered eradicated. Results: Out of 125 children, 71 received treatment with rifampicin in combination with amoxicillin (n = 44), erythromycin (n = 22), or clindamycin (n = 5) for 7 days. Eradication treatment was successful in 91.5% of the children. Six children (8.5%) had treatment failure with amoxicillin and rifampicin; 3 were found by late follow-up. There was a trend towards a better outcome with erythromycin and clindamycin combinations in comparison to amoxicillin. Conclusions: Eradication therapy was successful, but a proper follow-up is essential.

    • A new development in our department is that students in physics and teacher training now learn CAD and 3D printing. The teaching is based on a very brief introduction, after which the students will create final products that are later shown to other students and teachers during an exhibition. To further deepen the understanding and maintain the creativity of the students, a room with 3D printers all day accessible is provided. The students learn CAD and 3D printing well. In addition, the students use CAD and 3D printing in advanced experimental courses in physics where they benefit from creating different accessories to experimental setups. The students have also formed their own club for 3D printing to support other students, to produce creative solutions, and to test business ideas. This development has provided the first steps toward a maker movement environment in the teaching lab. We strongly believe in this concept.

  • Plasma protein profiling reveals dynamic immunomodulatory changes in multiple sclerosis patients during pregnancy
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Frontiers in Immunology. - : Frontiers Media SA. - 1664-3224. ; 13
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic autoimmune neuroinflammatory and neurodegenerative disorder of the central nervous system. Pregnancy represents a natural modulation of the disease course, where the relapse rate decreases, especially in the 3(rd) trimester, followed by a transient exacerbation after delivery. Although the exact mechanisms behind the pregnancy-induced modulation are yet to be deciphered, it is likely that the immune tolerance established during pregnancy is involved. In this study, we used the highly sensitive and specific proximity extension assay technology to perform protein profiling analysis of 92 inflammation-related proteins in MS patients (n=15) and healthy controls (n=10), longitudinally sampled before, during, and after pregnancy. Differential expression analysis was performed using linear models and p-values were adjusted for false discovery rate due to multiple comparisons. Our findings reveal gradual dynamic changes in plasma proteins that are most prominent during the 3(rd) trimester while reverting post-partum. Thus, this pattern reflects the disease activity of MS during pregnancy. Among the differentially expressed proteins in pregnancy, several proteins with known immunoregulatory properties were upregulated, such as PD-L1, LIF-R, TGF-beta 1, and CCL28. On the other hand, inflammatory chemokines such as CCL8, CCL13, and CXCL5, as well as members of the tumor necrosis factor family, TRANCE and TWEAK, were downregulated. Further in-depth studies will reveal if these proteins can serve as biomarkers in MS and whether they are mechanistically involved in the disease amelioration and worsening. A deeper understanding of the mechanisms involved may identify new treatment strategies mimicking the pregnancy milieu.

    • Tetrathiafulvalene (TTF) derivative substituted with two butyl- and two dodecylthiol chains is adsorbed on polycrystalline gold. The TTF-derived thiol adsorbates were characterized by ellipsometry, contact angle goniometry, infrared and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry. The molecule is strongly anchored on the gold surface through the sulfur terminating the alkylthiol chains. On the average, the TTF moiety is oriented extended away from the gold surface. The topmost layer of the film containing the dibutyl chains is disordered with gauche defects. The molecule was organized with majority of the alkylthiol chains bound to the gold surface. There are indications of pinholes in the monolayer due to steric hindrance of the bulky TTF rings. The molecular systems consisting of an electroactive pi-system such as TTF, are promising for thin-film field effect transistor application.
