  • J-PARC Neutrino Beamline Upgrade Technical Design Report
  • 2019
  • Rapport (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this document, technical details of the upgrade plan of the J-PARC neutrino beamline for the extension of the T2K experiment are described. T2K has proposed to accumulate data corresponding to 2×1022 protons-on-target in the next decade, aiming at an initial observation of CP violation with 3σ or higher significance in the case of maximal CP violation. Methods to increase the neutrino beam intensity, which are necessary to achieve the proposed data increase, are described.

  • Neutron tagging following atmospheric neutrino events in a water Cherenkov detector
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of Instrumentation. - : Institute of Physics (IOP). - 1748-0221. ; 17:10
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present the development of neutron-tagging techniques in Super-Kamiokande IV using a neural network analysis. The detection efficiency of neutron capture on hydrogen is estimated to be 26%, with a mis-tag rate of 0.016 per neutrino event. The uncertainty of the tagging efficiency is estimated to be 9.0%. Measurement of the tagging efficiency with data from an Americium-Beryllium calibration agrees with this value within 10%. The tagging procedure was performed on 3,244.4 days of SK-IV atmospheric neutrino data, identifying 18,091 neutrons in 26,473 neutrino events. The fitted neutron capture lifetime was measured as 218 +/- 9 mu s.

  • European survey on criteria of aesthetics for periodontal evaluation: The ESCAPE study
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Journal of Clinical Periodontology. - : Wiley. - 0303-6979 .- 1600-051X. ; 46:11, s. 1116-1123
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • © 2019 John Wiley & Sons A/S. Published by John Wiley & Sons Ltd Objective: The ESCAPE multicentre survey was designed to (a) compare the agreement of three relevant aesthetic scoring systems among different centres, and (b) evaluate the reproducibility of each question of the questionnaires. Materials and Methods: EFP centres (n=14) were involved in an e-survey. Forty-two participants (28 teachers, 14 postgraduate students) were asked to score the one-year aesthetic outcomes of photographs using the Before–After Scoring System (BASS), the Pink Esthetic Score (PES) and the Root coverage Esthetic Score (RES). Mean values of kappa statistics performed on each question were provided to resume global agreement of each method. Results: Between teachers, a difference of kappa≥0.41 (p=.01) was found for BASS (75%) and PES (57%). Similarly, RES (84%) and PES (57%) were different (p<.001). No difference was found between BASS (75%) and RES (84%). No difference was found between students, whatever the scoring system. Questions of each scoring system showed differences in their reproducibility. Conclusions: The outcomes of this study indicate that BASS and RES scoring systems are reproducible tools to evaluate aesthetic after root coverage therapies between different centres. Among the various variables, lack of scar, degree of root coverage, colour match and gingival margin that follows the CEJ show the best reliability.

  • Evidence for Basement Reactivation during the Opening of the Labrador Sea from the Makkovik Province, Labrador, Canada : Insights from Field Data and Numerical Models
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Geosciences. - : MDPI. - 2076-3263. ; 8:8
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The onshore exposures adjacent to modern, offshore passive continental margins may preserve evidence of deformation from the pre-, syn-, and post-rift phases of continental breakup that allow us to investigate the processes associated with and controlling rifting and breakup. Here, we characterize onshore brittle deformation and pre-rift basement metamorphic mineral fabric from onshore Labrador in Eastern Canada in the Palaeoproterozoic Aillik Domain of the Makkovik Province. Stress inversion (1) was applied to these data and then compared to (2) numerical models of hybrid slip and dilation tendency, (3) independent calculations of the regional geopotential stress field, and (4) analyses of palaeo-stress in proximal regions from previous work. The stress inversion shows well-constrained extensional deformation perpendicular to the passive margin, likely related to pre-breakup rifting in the proto-Labrador Sea. Hybrid slip and dilatation analysis indicates that inherited basement structures were likely oriented in a favorable orientation to be reactivated during rifting. Reconstructed geopotential stresses illuminate changes of the ambient stress field over time and confirm the present paleo-stress estimates. The new results and numerical models provide a consistent picture of the late Mesozoic-Cenozoic lithospheric stress field evolution in the Labrador Sea region. The proto-Labrador Sea region was characterized by a persistent E-W (coast-perpendicular) extensional stress regime, which we interpret as the pre-breakup continental rifting that finally led to continental breakup. Later, the ridge push of the Labrador Sea spreading ridge maintained this general direction of extension. We see indications for anti-clockwise rotation of the direction of extension along some of the passive margins. However, extreme persistent N-S-oriented extension as indicated by studies further north in West Greenland cannot be confirmed.

  • Mars plasma system response to solar wind disturbances during solar minimum
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Journal of Geophysical Research - Space Physics. - 2169-9380 .- 2169-9402. ; 122:6, s. 6611-6634
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper is a phenomenological description of the ionospheric plasma and induced magnetospheric boundary (IMB) response to two different types of upstream solar wind events impacting Mars in March 2008, at the solar minimum. A total of 16 Mars Express orbits corresponding to five consecutive days is evaluated. Solar TErrestrial RElations Observatory-B (STEREO-B) at 1AU and Mars Express and Mars Odyssey at 1.644AU detected the arrival of a small transient interplanetary coronal mass ejection (ICME-like) on the 6 and 7 of March, respectively. This is the first time that this kind of small solar structure is reported at Mars's distance. In both cases, it was followed by a large increase in solar wind velocity that lasted for similar to 10days. This scenario is simulated with the Wang-Sheeley-Arge (WSA) - ENLIL + Cone solar solar wind model. At Mars, the ICME-like event caused a strong compression of the magnetosheath and ionosphere, and the recovery lasted for similar to 3 orbits (similar to 20h). After that, the fast stream affected the upper ionosphere and the IMB, which radial and tangential motions in regions close to the subsolar point are analyzed. Moreover, a compression in the Martian plasma system is also observed, although weaker than after the ICME-like impact, and several magnetosheath plasma blobs in the upper ionosphere are detected by Mars Express. We conclude that, during solar minimum and at aphelion, small solar wind structures can create larger perturbations than previously expected in the Martian system.

  • Space Technology 5 multipoint observations of transpolar arc related field-aligned currents
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Journal of Geophysical Research - Space Physics. - 0148-0227. ; 116
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present two transpolar arc events where for the first time we are able to analyze changes in field-aligned currents associated with high-latitude transpolar auroral arcs on time scales of a few minutes. This is accomplished through the use of highly accurate multipoint magnetic field measurements provided by the Space Technology 5 mission, which consists of three microsatellites in low-Earth orbit. In the first event we examine measurements of an arc that is part of a highly dynamic auroral pattern, that of a hook-shaped arc. In the second event, a more stable dusk oval-aligned arc is analyzed. These events illustrate the dynamic nature of arc formation and show the usefulness of high-resolution multipoint measurements. Minimum variance analysis is used to determine the appropriateness of the infinite current sheet approximation and to calculate arc alignment angles which are then compared with those estimated from UV images or precipitating particle data.

  • Modulation of the substorm current wedge by bursty bulk flows : 8 September 2002- Revisited
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Journal of Geophysical Research - Space Physics. - 2169-9380 .- 2169-9402. ; 121:5, s. 4466-4482
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The ultimate formation mechanism of the substorm current wedge (SCW) remains to date unclear. In this study, we investigate its relationship to plasma flows at substorm onset and throughout the following expansion phase. We revisit the case of 8 September 2002, which has been defined as one of the best textbook examples of a substorm because of its excellent coverage by both spacecraft in the magnetotail and ground-based observatories. We found that a dense sequence of arrival of nightside flux transfer events (NFTEs; which can be understood as the lobe magnetic signature due to a bursty bulk flow travelling earthward in the central plasma sheet) in the near-Earth tail leads to a modulation (and further step-like builtup) of the SCW intensity during the substorm expansion phase. In addition, we found that small SCWs are created also during the growth phase of the event in association with another less intense sequence of NFTEs. The differences between the sequence of NFTEs in the growth and expansion phase are discussed. We conclude that the envelope of the magnetic disturbances which we typically refer to as an intense magnetic substorm is the result of a group or sequence of more intense and more frequent NFTEs.

  • Influence of loading and grafting on hard- and soft tissue healing at immediately placed implants : An experimental study in minipigs
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of Clinical Periodontology. - : Wiley-Blackwell. - 0303-6979 .- 1600-051X. ; 50:2, s. 232-241
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • OBJECTIVES: To histologically evaluate the influence of i) loading and ii) grafting on osseointegration and peri-implant soft tissue healing at immediately placed, self- cutting progressive tissue- level implants (TLX) in a minipig model.MATERIAL & METHODS: TLX implants (n=56) were immediately placed following the extraction of the mandibular first and second premolars, bilaterally, in a total of n=14 minipigs. In each animal, the implant sites were allocated to the following four groups: 1. unloaded with simultaneous grafting using a bovine bone mineral; 2. unloaded without grafting; 3. loaded with simultaneous grafting; 4. loaded without grafting. Histomorphometrical assessments at 4 and 12 weeks (n=7 animals each) included primary (i.e. bone-to-implant contact - BIC) and secondary outcome measures (e.g. first bone-to-implant contact - fBIC, junctional epithelium length- JE, connective tissue contact length - CTC, biological width - BW = JE + CTC).RESULTS: At 4 weeks, mean BIC values ranged from 74.5 ± 11.6% in group 2 to 83.8 ± 13.3% in group 1, and, at 12 weeks, from 75.5% ± 7.9% in group 2 to 79.9 ± 8.6% in group 1, respectively. Multivariate linear mixed regression did not reveal any associations between BIC and implant loading or grafting at 4 and 12 weeks. At 12 weeks, significantly higher fBIC values were noted in group 2 when compared with group 1. All groups showed comparable JE, CTC and BW values.CONCLUSIONS: Implant loading and grafting had no major effects on osseointegration and peri-implant soft tissue healing at TLX implants.
