  • Book chapter (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • For a very long time, the Christianisation of Scandinavia was considered a rather uncomplicated affair. After of prelude in the ninth to the eleventh century, where the ecclesiastical organisation was developed largely under the archbishops of Hamburg-Bremen, the three Scandinavian kingdoms became three different church provinces in the 12th century. The Christianity in question was understood as a solid monolithic institution that met a paganism which was perceived as a just as monolithic pre-Christian religious culture. These categories have become increasingly problematised in recent scholarship. They were both shaped by nineteenth century nationalism and imperialism, answering to the need for an organic origin for each nation and for legitimation of the idealistic state. While there is not yet any generally accepted new approach to the pre-Christian, pagan, religion in the North, the understanding of Christianity has changed fundamentally in recent research. Early Christianity in Scandinavia had many faces. It was over one thousand years old when Scandinavia became a separate Church province ca. 1103. By then it had been rolling around Europe in many waves and many directions, and consisted of many coexisting layers, some of which are yet poorly known and understood.

    • "The Scandinavian Jurisdiction of the Archbishopric of Hamburg-Bremen from its Foundation to the Establishment of the Ecclesiastical Province of Lund" This article examines the archiepiscopal rights in Scandinavia of the Archbishops of Hamburg-Bremen from the time of Ansgar to the establishment of the ecclesiastical province of Lund. It follows the track of the rejections of the claims of Archbishop Adalbert (1043–72) around 1060 by the Norwegian and the Swedish royal courts, the latter pointing to a lack of ’confirmation by the Pope’ or even ’the Pope’s seal’, sygillum apostolici. By examining the only privileges preserved in their original to modern times – those of Clement II from 1047 and Leo IX from 1053 – and following the trail of the documents to which they refer back to Ansgar’s time, it is shown that the Archbishops of Hamburg-Bremen never had any archiepiscopal rights in Scandinavia. Even the mighty Archbishop Adalbert, who indeed referred to himself as ‘archbishop of all the northern nations’ (universarum septentrionalium nationum archiepiscopus), and tried hard to implement this power over all of Scandinavia, actually lacked these rights. That is why not even his close ally Sweyn II Estridsson accepted these claims, and why finally also the papal curia under Gregory VII, in a letter to the Swedish king in 1080, openly referred to these claims as founded on ‘alien documents’, aliena documenta. In connection with this it is shown that the idea that Ansgar never was Archbishop of Hamburg but only ‘missionary Archbishop of Bremen’ from the year 864, can be safely refuted, and so also the further hypotheses based on this argument, such as the dismissal of the foundation document of Louis the Pious for Hamburg from 15 May 834 as a forgery."
