  • A Search for IceCube Sub-TeV Neutrinos Correlated with Gravitational-wave Events Detected By LIGO/Virgo
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Astrophysical Journal. - : Institute of Physics Publishing (IOPP). - 1538-4357 .- 0004-637X. ; 959:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The LIGO/Virgo collaboration published the catalogs GWTC-1, GWTC-2.1, and GWTC-3 containing candidate gravitational-wave (GW) events detected during its runs O1, O2, and O3. These GW events can be possible sites of neutrino emission. In this paper, we present a search for neutrino counterparts of 90 GW candidates using IceCube DeepCore, the low-energy infill array of the IceCube Neutrino Observatory. The search is conducted using an unbinned maximum likelihood method, within a time window of 1000 s, and uses the spatial and timing information from the GW events. The neutrinos used for the search have energies ranging from a few GeV to several tens of TeV. We do not find any significant emission of neutrinos, and place upper limits on the flux and the isotropic-equivalent energy emitted in low-energy neutrinos. We also conduct a binomial test to search for source populations potentially contributing to neutrino emission. We report a nondetection of a significant neutrino-source population with this test.

  • IceCat-1: The IceCube Event Catalog of Alert Tracks
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Astrophysical Journal, Supplement Series. - : IOP Publishing Ltd. - 1538-4365 .- 0067-0049. ; 269:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present a catalog of likely astrophysical neutrino track-like events from the IceCube Neutrino Observatory. IceCube began reporting likely astrophysical neutrinos in 2016, and this system was updated in 2019. The catalog presented here includes events that were reported in real time since 2019, as well as events identified in archival data samples starting from 2011. We report 275 neutrino events from two selection channels as the first entries in the catalog, the IceCube Event Catalog of Alert Tracks, which will see ongoing extensions with additional alerts. The Gold and Bronze alert channels respectively provide neutrino candidates with a 50% and 30% probability of being astrophysical, on average assuming an astrophysical neutrino power-law energy spectral index of 2.19. For each neutrino alert, we provide the reconstructed energy, direction, false-alarm rate, probability of being astrophysical in origin, and likelihood contours describing the spatial uncertainty in the alert's reconstructed location. We also investigate a directional correlation of these neutrino events with gamma-ray and X-ray catalogs, including 4FGL, 3HWC, TeVCat, and Swift-BAT.

  • Search for 10-1000 GeV Neutrinos from Gamma-Ray Bursts with IceCube
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Astrophysical Journal. - : Institute of Physics (IOP). - 1538-4357 .- 0004-637X. ; 964:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present the results of a search for 10-1000 GeV neutrinos from 2268 gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) over 8 yr of IceCube-DeepCore data. This work probes burst physics below the photosphere where electromagnetic radiation cannot escape. Neutrinos of tens of giga electronvolts are predicted in sub-photospheric collision of free-streaming neutrons with bulk-jet protons. In a first analysis, we searched for the most significant neutrino-GRB coincidence using six overlapping time windows centered on the prompt phase of each GRB. In a second analysis, we conducted a search for a group of GRBs, each individually too weak to be detectable, but potentially significant when combined. No evidence of neutrino emission is found for either analysis. The most significant neutrino coincidence is for Fermi-GBM GRB bn 140807500, with a p-value of 0.097 corrected for all trials. The binomial test used to search for a group of GRBs had a p-value of 0.65 after all trial corrections. The binomial test found a group consisting only of GRB bn 140807500 and no additional GRBs. The neutrino limits of this work complement those obtained by IceCube at tera electronvolt to peta electronvolt energies. We compare our findings for the large set of GRBs as well as GRB 221009A to the sub-photospheric neutron-proton collision model and find that GRB 221009A provides the most constraining limit on baryon loading. For a jet Lorentz factor of 300 (800), the baryon loading on GRB 221009A is lower than 3.85 (2.13) at a 90% confidence level.

  • Search for Galactic Core-collapse Supernovae in a Decade of Data Taken with the IceCube Neutrino Observatory
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Astrophysical Journal. - : Institute of Physics Publishing (IOPP). - 1538-4357 .- 0004-637X. ; 961:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The IceCube Neutrino Observatory has been continuously taking data to search for O(0.5–10) s long neutrino bursts since 2007. Even if a Galactic core-collapse supernova is optically obscured or collapses to a black hole instead of exploding, it will be detectable via the O(10) MeV neutrino burst emitted during the collapse. We discuss a search for such events covering the time between 2008 April 17 and 2019 December 31. Considering the average data taking and analysis uptime of 91.7% after all selection cuts, this is equivalent to 10.735 yr of continuous data taking. In order to test the most conservative neutrino production scenario, the selection cuts were optimized for a model based on an 8.8 solar mass progenitor collapsing to an O–Ne–Mg core. Conservative assumptions on the effects of neutrino oscillations in the exploding star were made. The final selection cut was set to ensure that the probability to detect such a supernova within the Milky Way exceeds 99%. No such neutrino burst was found in the data after performing a blind analysis. Hence, a 90% C.L. upper limit on the rate of core-collapse supernovae out to distances of ≈25 kpc was determined to be 0.23 yr−1. For the more distant Magellanic Clouds, only high neutrino luminosity supernovae will be detectable by IceCube, unless external information on the burst time is available. We determined a model-independent limit by parameterizing the dependence on the neutrino luminosity and the energy spectrum.

  • Search for neutrino lines from dark matter annihilation and decay with IceCube
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Physical Review D. - : American Physical Society. - 2470-0010 .- 2470-0029. ; 108:10
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Dark matter particles in the Galactic Center and halo can annihilate or decay into a pair of neutrinos producing a monochromatic flux of neutrinos. The spectral feature of this signal is unique and it is not expected from any astrophysical production mechanism. Its observation would constitute a dark matter smoking gun signal. We performed the first dedicated search with a neutrino telescope for such signal, by looking at both the angular and energy information of the neutrino events. To this end, a total of five years of IceCube's DeepCore data has been used to test dark matter masses ranging from 10 GeV to 40 TeV. No significant neutrino excess was found and upper limits on the annihilation cross section, as well as lower limits on the dark matter lifetime, were set. The limits reached are of the order of 10-24 cm3/s for an annihilation and up to 1027 s for decaying dark matter. Using the same data sample we also derive limits for dark matter annihilation or decay into a pair of Standard Model charged particles.

  • An updated genetic model for metamorphosed and deformed, c. 1.89 Ga magnesian Zn-Pb-Ag skarn deposits, Sala area, Bergslagen, Sweden
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 15th SGA Biennial Meeting, 27-30 August. - : University of Glasgow Publicity Services. ; , s. 166-169
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This contribution presents an updated view on the genesis of stratabound Zn-Pb-Ag mineralization in the Sala area, Bergslagen, Sweden. Integrated legacy and new geological, geochemical and geophysical data reveal that the deposits are hosted by a complex array of magnesian skarn-altered zones in dolomitic marble. These mineralized zones parallel early faults and metavolcanic interbeds in the host marble, and converge downwards in the stratigraphy adjacent to a 1.89 Ga calc-alkaline granite-granodiorite batholith. Prograde alteration involved formation of early barren ferroan diopside- and forsterite-bearing skarns. Mineralization is mainly associated with subsequent alteration to tremolite, chlorite, serpentine, magnetite and calcite. The hydrous associations overlap mineralogically with assemblages formed during subsequent greenschist facies regional metamorphism between 1.87 Ga and 1.8 Ga. However, ferroan diopside and forsterite are unique to the alteration system, and indicate mineralization in conjunction with an early, high T, metasomatic alteration event at 1.89 Ga. The Sala deposits can be classified as Zn skarn deposits, albeit atypical in the magnesian nature of the skarns and the lack of minerals with essential Mn. The Fe and Mn content in magnesian silicates and carbonates is however sufficient to induce clear enrichment haloes of these elements around the deposits. The magnesian nature of the skarns probably reflect formation in a shallow marine continental backarc tectonic setting, and an importance of seawater in early pre-skarn alteration stages, such as dolomitization.

  • Geological controls on light dolomite deposits related to polymetallic sulphide deposits, Sala area, Bergslagen, Sweden : insights from whole-rock lithogeochemistry, spectrophotometry and magnetic susceptibility
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: EGU General Assembly 2019. - : Copernicus Publications.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Regionally extensive, dolomitic and calcitic marble units comprise a subordinate but important component of a c. 1.91-1.89 Ga supracrustal succession in the Bergslagen lithotectonic unit, southern Sweden. These units occur as interbeds in predominantly felsic metavolcanic successions, and originated as shallow marine, stromatolitic limestone. Upon burial, the limestones were subjected to dolomitization and hydrothermal alteration, and at c. 1.87-1.80 Ga during the Svecokarelian orogeny, greenschist-amphibolite facies metamorphism and ductile deformation led to further modification. The marble units host abundant replacement-type, syn-volcanic sulphide and iron oxide deposits and locally industrial carbonate deposits. In the Sala area, current mining targets exceptionally light dolomite marble proximal to formerly mined Zn-Pb-Ag mineralization. The geological controls on marble lightness are poorly understood, e.g. the relative importance of primary impurity caused by co-settled volcaniclastic or siliciclastic material as opposed to secondary modifications caused by hydrothermal alteration. The following study addresses these controls based on 179 geospatial dolomitic marble samples analyzed for whole-rock lithogeochemistry, spectrophotometric lightness and magnetic susceptibility.Centered log-ratio transformed major element data suggest that lightness is positively correlated with Mg, Ca and Tot C, negatively correlated with Fe and Mn, and lack a clear relationship to Al and Si. Robust principal component analysis of major and trace element data allows representation of 81.1% of the cumulative variance by three principal components. PC1 (46.7%) mainly differentiates ‘hydrothermal’ elements such as Zn, Pb and As from elements such as Si, Mg, Ca, Tot C, Al, Zr, Ce, La and Eu. PC2 (21%) differentiates the latter into a ‘volcaniclastic-siliciclastic’ group dominated by Zr, Al, Ce, La and Eu and ‘calcite-dolomite’ group dominated by Ca, Mg and Tot C. PC3 (13.4%) is primarily controlled by Fe and Mn, with Fe+Mn-enriched samples outlining a c. 200 m wide halo around known Zn-Pb-Ag deposits. Optic microscopy and normative mineralogy suggest a negative correlation between lightness and the opaque minerals magnetite, pyrrhotite, pyrite, sphalerite and galena, which are variably enriched in this alteration halo.Collectively, the results imply that whereas a volcaniclastic component is detrimental to lightness, this effect is negligible relative to the effect of even weak Fe-enrichments (> 1 wt.%) at SiO2 < 10 wt.% and Al2O3 < 2 wt.%. This likely reflect that in contrast to the opaque minerals, the main silicates tremolite, serpentine, chlorite and phlogopite grind into light powders during processing. Light dolomite and sulphide-mineralized samples cluster in opposite corners in RQ1-RQ3 space and form coherent geospatial clusters corresponding to known deposits. Magnetic susceptibility data effectively differentiate these clusters and is hence useful for outlining prospective marble volumes. It is speculated that light marble constitutes a peripheral member of the sulphide-associated alteration halo. Thus, light marble is in itself a vector to polymetallic sulphides, and a potential byproduct in operations targeting the latter. High lightness is tentatively attributed to leaching and recrystallization of dolomite under elevated temperatures, either driven by ‘spent’ ore-forming fluids exiting the mineralizing system, or by marine fluids in peripheral, secondary hydrothermal aleration cells.

  • TRIM study protocol - a prospective randomized multicenter Trial to assess the Role of Imaging during follow-up after radical surgery of stage IIB-C and III cutaneous malignant Melanoma
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: BMC Cancer. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1471-2407. ; 20:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BackgroundThe incidence of cutaneous malignant melanoma (CMM) is increasing worldwide. In Sweden, over 4600 cases were diagnosed in 2018. The prognosis after radical surgery varies considerably with tumor stage. In recent years, new treatment options have become available for metastatic CMM. Early onset of treatment seems to improve outcome, which suggests that early detection of recurrent disease should be beneficial. Consequently, in several countries imaging is a part of the routine follow-up program after surgery of high risk CMM. However, imaging has drawbacks, including resources required (costs, personnel, equipment) and the radiation exposure. Furthermore, many patients experience anxiety in waiting for the imaging results and investigations of irrelevant findings is another factor that also could cause worry and lead to decreased quality of life. Hence, the impact of imaging in this setting is important to address and no randomized study has previously been conducted. The Swedish national guidelines stipulate follow-up for 3years by clinical examinations only.MethodsThe TRIM study is a prospective randomized multicenter trial evaluating the potential benefit of imaging and blood tests during follow-up after radical surgery for high-risk CMM, compared to clinical examinations only. Primary endpoint is overall survival (OS) at 5years. Secondary endpoints are survival from diagnosis of relapse and health-related quality of life (HRQoL). Eligible for inclusion are patients radically operated for CMM stage IIB-C or III with sufficient renal function for iv contrast-enhanced CT and who are expected to be fit for treatment in case of recurrence. The planned number of patients is >1300. Patients are randomized to clinical examinations for 3years +/- whole-body imaging with CT or FDG-PET/CT and laboratory tests including S100B protein and LDH. This academic study is supported by the Swedish Melanoma Study Group.DiscussionThis is the first randomized prospective trial on the potential benefit of imaging as a part of the follow-up scheme after radical surgery for high-risk CMM.ResultsThe first patient was recruited in June 2017 and as of April 2020, almost 500 patients had been included at 19 centers in Sweden.Trial registrationClinicalTrials.gov, NCT 03116412. • Ore mineral characteristics as rate-limiting factors in sphalerite flotation: Comparison of the mineral chemistry (iron and manganese content), grain size, and liberation
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Minerals Engineering. - : Elsevier. - 0892-6875 .- 1872-9444. ; 185
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A sphalerite deportment study using QEMSCAN® was conducted to understand the distribution of the sphalerite grains with varying iron and manganese content during a multi-stage Zn-Pb-Cu flotation of a complex ore. In addition, the study aims to understand the effect of sphalerite chemistry in relation to grain size and liberation. Mineral chemistry, grain size, and degree of liberation were extracted for 497,704 sphalerite grains, composed of approximately 31 million energy-dispersive spectrometer (EDS) analysis points. Bulk chemical assay and electron probe microanalysis (EPMA) were used to validate the extracted sphalerite chemistry data from QEMSCAN®. Sphalerite recovery in the final zinc concentrate improved with increasing iron and manganese content for sphalerite grains containing up to 9% Fe and 2% Mn. At higher iron and manganese content, sphalerite recovery decreased or plateaued. Conversely, an opposite trend was observed for losses to the copper-lead concentrate. The obtained results indicated that considering the ore mineral characteristics, physical factors such as grain size and liberation have a more significant effect on sphalerite flotation than the presence of iron and manganese.

  • Quantifying the variability of a complex ore using geometallurgical domains
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Minerals Engineering. - : Elsevier. - 0892-6875 .- 1872-9444. ; 203
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This comprehensive study focuses on the geometallurgical characterization of the complex Lappberget polymetallic Zn-Pb-Ag-(Cu-Au) sulfide deposit at the Garpenberg mine, one of Sweden’s largest and most significant sources of zinc, lead, and silver. The research explores the intricate mineralogy and texture of the ore, investigating its impact on the variability of flotation performance for different ore types. QEMSCAN® analysis and element-to-mineral conversion (EMC) were employed to quantitatively characterize the ore in terms of mineral distribution and occurrence. The study revealed significant variability in Cu-Pb flotation compared to Zn flotation due to the targeted mineral varieties. While zinc primarily occurred in sphalerite grains, Cu-Pb flotation aimed to recover multiple Pb-, Cu-, Ag- and Au-bearing minerals that were finely grained and intricately intergrown with other sulfides. Grain size and the degree of liberation emerged as primary rate-limiting factors, especially in the Zn flotation circuit. Seven geometallurgical domains were defined based on the concentration efficiencies (i.e., selectivity and recovery) for sphalerite, galena, chalcopyrite, and Ag-bearing phases. The proposed geometallurgical characterization approach aims to transform geologically defined classes into geometallurgical domains by relating the deposit's key mineralogical and textural characteristics to metallurgical performance.

  • IceCube search for neutrinos from GRB 221009A
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of 38th International Cosmic Ray Conference (ICRC 2023). - : Sissa Medialab Srl.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    •  GRB 221009A is the brightest Gamma Ray Burst (GRB) ever observed. The observed extremelyhigh flux of high and very-high-energy photons provide a unique opportunity to probe the predictedneutrino counterpart to the electromagnetic emission. We have used a variety of methods to searchfor neutrinos in coincidence with the GRB over several time windows during the precursor, promptand afterglow phases of the GRB. MeV scale neutrinos are studied using photo-multiplier ratescalers which are normally used to search for galactic core-collapse supernovae neutrinos. GeVneutrinos are searched starting with DeepCore triggers. These events don’t have directionallocalization, but instead can indicate an excess in the rate of events. 10 GeV - 1 TeV and >TeVneutrinos are searched using traditional neutrino point source methods which take into accountthe direction and time of events with DeepCore and the entire IceCube detector respectively. The>TeV results include both a fast-response analysis conducted by IceCube in real-time with timewindows of T0 − 1 to T0 + 2 hours and T0 ± 1 day around the time of GRB 221009A, as well asan offline analysis with 3 new time windows up to a time window of T0 − 1 to T0 + 14 days, thelongest time period we consider. The combination of observations by IceCube covers 9 ordersof magnitude in neutrino energy, from MeV to PeV, placing upper limits across the range forpredicted neutrino emission.

    • The IceCube Neutrino Observatory sends realtime neutrino alerts with a high probability of being astrophysical in origin. We present a new method to correlate these events and possible candidate sources using 2089 blazars from the Fermi-LAT 4LAC-DR2 catalog and with 3413 active galactic nuclei (AGNs) from the Radio Fundamental Catalog. No statistically significant neutrino emission was found in any of the catalog searches. The result suggests that a small fraction, <1%, of the studied AGNs emit neutrinos that pass the alert criteria, and is compatible with prior evidence for neutrino emission presented by IceCube and other authors from sources such as TXS 0506 + 056 and PKS 1502 + 106. We also present cross-checks to other analyses that claim a significant correlation using similar data samples.

  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Astrophysical Journal. - : Institute of Physics (IOP). - 0004-637X .- 1538-4357. ; 956:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Galactic plane, harboring a diffuse neutrino flux, is a particularly interesting target in which to study potential cosmic-ray acceleration sites. Recent gamma-ray observations by HAWC and LHAASO have presented evidence for multiple Galactic sources that exhibit a spatially extended morphology and have energy spectra continuing beyond 100 TeV. A fraction of such emission could be produced by interactions of accelerated hadronic cosmic rays, resulting in an excess of high-energy neutrinos clustered near these regions. Using 10 years of IceCube data comprising track-like events that originate from charged-current muon neutrino interactions, we perform a dedicated search for extended neutrino sources in the Galaxy. We find no evidence for time-integrated neutrino emission from the potential extended sources studied in the Galactic plane. The most significant location, at 2.6 sigma post-trials, is a 1.degrees 7 sized region coincident with the unidentified TeV gamma-ray source 3HWC J1951+266. We provide strong constraints on hadronic emission from several regions in the galaxy.

  • Dangerous use of mobile phones and other communication devices while driving : A toolbox of counter-measures
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 16th International Conference Road Safety on Four Continents. - Linköping : Statens väg- och transportforskningsinstitut.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The use of mobile phone and similar devices while driving has been a topic of discussion and research for several years. It is now an established fact that driving performance is deteriorated due to distraction but no clear conclusions can yet be drawn concerning influence on crash rates. Better studies on this relationship is needed. Most countries in Europe and many countries elsewhere have introduced different types of bans for handheld devices. Sweden has, however, no such bans. VTI was commissioned by the Swedish Government to outline possible means to reduce the dangerous usage of mobile phones and other communication devices while driving as alternatives to banning. This task was a result of a previous VTI-state-of-the-art review of research on mobile phone and other communication device usage while driving. One of the findings in the review was that bans on handheld phones did not appear to reduce the number of crashes.Eighteen different countermeasures in three main areas were suggested. (1) Technical solutions such as countermeasures directed towards the infrastructure, the vehicle and the communication device. (2) Education and information, describing different ways to increase knowledge and understanding among stakeholders and different driver categories. (3) Different possibilities for how society, industry and organisations can influence the behaviour of individuals, via policies, rules, recommendations and incentives. Our conclusion is that a combination of different countermeasures is needed – where education and information to the drivers are combined with support and incentives for a safe usage of different communication devices.

  • Ingår i: Conservation Genetics. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1566-0621 .- 1572-9737. ; 18:5, s. 1213-1227
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Intraspecific genetic variation can have similar effects as species diversity on ecosystem function; understanding such variation is important, particularly for ecological key species. The brown trout plays central roles in many northern freshwater ecosystems, and several cases of sympatric brown trout populations have been detected in freshwater lakes based on apparent morphological differences. In some rare cases, sympatric, genetically distinct populations lacking visible phenotypic differences have been detected based on genetic data alone. Detecting such cryptic sympatric populations without prior grouping of individuals based on phenotypic characteristics is more difficult statistically, though. The aim of the present study is to delineate the spatial connectivity of two cryptic, sympatric genetic clusters of brown trout discovered in two interconnected, tiny subarctic Swedish lakes. The structures were detected using allozyme markers, and have been monitored over time. Here, we confirm their existence for almost three decades and report that these cryptic, sympatric populations exhibit very different connectivity patterns to brown trout of nearby lakes. One of the clusters is relatively isolated while the other one shows high genetic similarity to downstream populations. There are indications of different spawning sites as reflected in genetic structuring among parr from different creeks. We used > 3000 SNPs on a subsample and find that the SNPs largely confirm the allozyme pattern but give considerably lower F (ST) values, and potentially indicate further structuring within populations. This type of complex genetic substructuring over microgeographical scales might be more common than anticipated and needs to be considered in conservation management.

• Climate and land use change can alter the incidence and strength of biotic interactions, with important effects on the distribution, abundance and function of species. To assess the importance of these effects and their dynamics, studies quantifying how biotic interactions change in space and time are needed. We studied interactions between nettle-feeding butterflies and their shared natural enemies (parasitoids) locally and across 500 km latitudinal gradient in Sweden. We also examined the potential impact of the range-expansion of the butterfly Araschnia levana on resident butterflies via shared parasitoids, by studying how parasitism in resident butterflies covaries with the presence or absence of the newly-established species. We collected 6777 larvae of four nettle-feeding butterfly species (Aglais urticae, Aglais io, Ar. levana and Vanessa atalanta), over two years, at 19 sites distributed along the gradient. We documented the parasitoid complex for each butterfly species and measured their overlap, and analysed how parasitism rates were affected by butterfly species assemblage, variations in abundance, time, and the arrival of Ar. levana. Parasitoids caused high mortality, with substantial overlap in the complex of parasitoids associated with the four host butterflies. Levels of parasitism differed significantly among butterflies and were influenced by the local butterfly species assemblage. Our results also suggest that parasitism in resident butterflies is elevated at sites where Ar. levana has been established for a longer period. In our study system, variations in butterfly species assemblages were associated in a predictable way with substantial variations in rates of parasitism. This relationship is likely to affect the dynamics of the butterfly host species, and potentially cascade to the larger number of species with which they interact. These results highlight the importance of indirect interactions and their potential to reorganise ecological communities, especially in the context of shifts in species distributions in a warmer world.
