Rapidity-alignment and p(T) compensation of particle pairs in hadronic Z(0) decays

- Observation is made of rapidity-alignment of K+K- and (p) over barp pairs which results from their asymmetric orientation in rapidity, with respect to the direction from primary quark to antiquark. The K+K- and (p) over barp data are consistent with predictions from the fragmentation string model. However, the (p) over barp data strongly disagree with the conventional implementation of the cluster model. The non-perturbative process of 'gluon splitting to diquarks' has to be incorporated into the cluster model for it to agree with the data. Local conservation of PT between particles nearby in rapidity (i.e., p(T) compensation) is analysed with respect to the thrust direction for pi(+)pi(-), K+K-, and (p) over barp pairs. In this case, the string model provides fair agreement with the data. The cluster model is incompatible with the data for all three particle pairs. The model with its central premiss of isotropically-decaying clusters predicts a p(T) correlation not seen in the data. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

- A search for pair-produced charged Higgs bosons was performed in the high energy data collected by the DELPHI detector at LEP II at centre-of-mass energies from 189 GeV to 202 GeV. The three different final states, taunutaunu, c (s) over bar(c) over bars and c (s) over bar taunu were considered. New methods were applied to reject wrong hadronic jet pairings and for the tau identification, where a discriminator based on tau polarisation and polar angles was used. No excess of data compared to the expected Standard Model processes was observed and the existence of a charged Higgs boson with mass lower than 71.5 GeV/c(2) is excluded at the 95% confidence level. - Neutral Higgs bosons of the Standard Model (SM) and the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) were searched for in the data collected in 1999 by the DELPHI experiment at centre-of-mass energies between 191.6 and 201.7 GeV with a total integrated luminosity of 228 pb(-1). These analyses, in combination with our results at lower energies, set 95% confidence level lower mass bounds on the Standard Model Higgs boson (107.3 GeV/c(2)) and on the lightest neutral scalar (85.9 GeV/c(2)) and neutral pseudoscalar (86.5 GeV/c(2)) Higgs bosons in representative scans of the MSSM parameter space. An extended scan of the MSSM parameter space was also performed to test the robustness of these limits.

- Inclusive J/psi production in photon-photon collisions has been observed at LEP II beam energies. A clear signal from the reaction gammagamma --> J/psi + X is seen. The number of observed N(J/psi --> mu(+)mu(-)) events is 36+/-7 for an integrated luminosity of 617 pb(-1), yielding a cross-section of sigma(J/psi + X) = 45+/-9(stat) +/- 17(syst) pb. Based on a study of the event shapes of different types of gammagamma processes in the PYTHIA program, we conclude that (74+/-22) % of the observed J/psi events are due to 'resolved' photons, the dominant contribution of which is most probably due to the gluon content of the photon. - The standard method used for tagging b-hadrons in the DELPHI experiment at the CERN LEP Collider is discussed in detail. The main ingredient of b-tagging is the impact parameters of tracks, which relies mostly on the vertex detector. Additional information, such as the mass of particles associated to a secondary vertex, significantly improves the selection efficiency and the background suppression. The paper describes various discriminating variables used for the tagging and the procedure of their combination. In addition, applications of b-tagging to some physics analyses, which depend crucially on the performance and reliability of b-tagging, are described briefly.

- Background: Although it is well known that people with multiple sclerosis (PwMS) retire from work early, little is known about how long-term changes in functioning and perceived impact of multiple sclerosis (MS) interact with sustainability of employment.Objective: To explore changes in functioning and in perceived impact of MS over 10 years, in relation to employment status of PwMS.Methods: In order to measure functioning, data on activities (walking ability, fine hand use, personal activities in daily living); participation in activities of everyday life (domestic, outdoor and leisure activities); body functions (cognitive function, fatigue, depressive symptoms); and perceived impact of MS were collected in 116 PwMS at baseline and at a 10-year follow-up. Ten-year changes were explored with the participants divided into four subgroups based on employment status at the follow-up: 1) full-time work at the 10-year follow-up; 2) part-time work at the 10-year follow-up; 3) declined from working at baseline to not working at the 10-year follow-up; and 4) not working at baseline nor at the 10-year follow-up.Results: Patterns of change in functioning for PwMS who worked showed a more apparent deterioration over 10 years among those working part-time with regard to walking ability, fatigue and depressive symptoms. Members of the subgroups who declined from working at baseline to not working at the 10-year follow-up or who were working neither at baseline nor at the follow-up deteriorated the most in functioning. The subgroup whose employment status declined from baseline to follow-up showed a significant decrease in cognitive function and an increase in perceived physical impact of the disease. All subgroups experienced a deterioration in walking ability over the 10-year span, and in all subgroups a majority had limited fine hand use over the span of the study period.Conclusion: The deterioration in functioning was most apparent in those PwMS whose employment status declined from working at baseline to not working at the 10-year follow-up. Close monitoring of work situation and frequency of activities and participation in everyday activities, as well as recurrent training of functioning, are suggested for maintaining a high level of functioning and work status, or for supporting transition to an appropriate number of working hours.

- Idag har många svenska företag fått ISO 9000-certifikat genom tredjeparts bedömning, antingen via SIS, Norsk Veritas, Lloyd's eller British Standard Institute. De flesta företagen har antingen certifierats enligt ISO 9001 eller ISO 9002. I september 1992 hade 34 företag certifierats genom Norsk Veritas och det fanns 72 certifierade företag på SIS lista.Det finns dock många olika synpunkter angående värdet av en certifiering. Vissa anser att den är grundläggande för ett gott kvalitetsarbete och andra anser att det verkar vara en krånglig pappersexercis utan större inverkan på kvalitetsresultatet. Juran väckte en del uppståndelse och eftertanke när han 1989 sa "Se gärna till att uppfylla ISO 9000 men låt det inte störa kvalitetsarbetet".Denna rapport baseras på en undersökning för att ta reda på hur det verkligen förhåller sig i svenska företag. Den är utförd av teknologer som deltagit i en kurs i "Industriell kvalitetsteknik" vid Chalmers tekniska högskola. Var och en av teknologerna har haft som uppgift att ta kontakt med ett svenskt företag som certifierats enligt ISO 9001 eller ISO 9002. Uppgiften gällde att undersöka vilka positiva och negativa erfarenheter de certifierade företagen har av certifieringsprocessen och vilka resultat de uppnått internt och externt på grund av ISO 9000.Teknologerna delades in i grupper om 5-7 personer där var och en ringde ett företag under november-december 1992. Därefter sammanställde varje grupp en liten rapport baserad på 5-7 intervjuer. De analyserade de viktigaste positiva och negativa synpunkterna från dessa intervjuer. De undersökte om det fanns något gemensamt i svaren, eller om företagen hade olika erfarenheter och då försökte de komma fram till vad detta kunde bero på.Genom den egna direkta kontakten med ett företag och den gruppvisa diskussionen och författandet av en rapport har teknologerna kunna skaffa sig egna kunskaper om ISO 9000. I storgrupp presenterade därefter de olika smågrupperna sina rapporter och diskuterade resultaten. Baserat på denna diskussion, smågruppsrapporterna och ifyllda intervjuformulär har därefter tre teknologer sammanställt resultatet till föreliggande rapport.

SweGen : a whole-genome data resource of genetic variability in a cross-section of the Swedish population

- Here we describe the SweGen data set, a comprehensive map of genetic variation in the Swedish population. These data represent a basic resource for clinical genetics laboratories as well as for sequencing-based association studies by providing information on genetic variant frequencies in a cohort that is well matched to national patient cohorts. To select samples for this study, we first examined the genetic structure of the Swedish population using high-density SNP-array data from a nation-wide cohort of over 10 000 Swedish-born individuals included in the Swedish Twin Registry. A total of 1000 individuals, reflecting a cross-section of the population and capturing the main genetic structure, were selected for whole-genome sequencing. Analysis pipelines were developed for automated alignment, variant calling and quality control of the sequencing data. This resulted in a genome-wide collection of aggregated variant frequencies in the Swedish population that we have made available to the scientific community through the website https://swefreq.nbis.se. A total of 29.2 million single-nucleotide variants and 3.8 million indels were detected in the 1000 samples, with 9.9 million of these variants not present in current databases. Each sample contributed with an average of 7199 individual-specific variants. In addition, an average of 8645 larger structural variants (SVs) were detected per individual, and we demonstrate that the population frequencies of these SVs can be used for efficient filtering analyses. Finally, our results show that the genetic diversity within Sweden is substantial compared with the diversity among continental European populations, underscoring the relevance of establishing a local reference data set.

Loaded double ball bar for capability testing of NC machine tools

- This paper presents a novel test device for the evaluation of the accuracy of NC machine tools. The design concept is similar to a double ball bar (DBB) with the difference that an adjustable load generated by the device can be applied between spindle nose and machine tool table. This load eliminates the play existing in machine tool joints, thus reproducing the testing conditions that exist during machining. Collected data can be used to plot diagrams displaying important aspects of machine tool performance and a number of key figures such as static stiffness may be determined. The data can also be used for trend analysis; to predict any accuracy problems, and further to conduct preventive maintenance instead of emergency calls. The determined static behaviour could also be used to improve digital models for process simulations and compensation of errors caused by deflection.
