  • Quadrupole Collectivity of neutron-rich nuclei around 132Sn
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Frontiers in Nuclear Structure, Astrophysics, and Reactions, FINUSTAR 2007. - : AIP. - 9780735405325 ; 1012, s. 296-299
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report on the "safe" Coulomb excitation of neutron-rich Cd, Xe, and Ba isotopes in the vicinity of the doubly-magic nucleus 132Sn. The radioactive nuclei have been produced by ISOLDE at CERN and postaccelerated by the REX-ISOLDE facility. The γ-decay of excited states has been detected by the MINIBALL array. The presented preliminary results for the B(E2) values are consistent with expectations from phenomenological systematics and will be compared with theoretical calculations.

  • 0(gs)+ -->2(1)+ transition strengths in 106Sn and 108Sn.
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - 1079-7114. ; 101:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The reduced transition probabilities, B(E2; 0(gs)+ -->2(1)+), have been measured in the radioactive isotopes (108,106)Sn using subbarrier Coulomb excitation at the REX-ISOLDE facility at CERN. Deexcitation gamma rays were detected by the highly segmented MINIBALL Ge-detector array. The results, B(E2;0(gs)+ -->2(1)+)=0.222(19)e2b2 for 108Sn and B(E2; 0(gs)+-->2(1)+)=0.195(39)e2b2 for 106Sn were determined relative to a stable 58Ni target. The resulting B(E2) values are approximately 30% larger than shell-model predictions and deviate from the generalized seniority model. This experimental result may point towards a weakening of the N=Z=50 shell closure.

  • A global database of lake surface temperatures collected by in situ and satellite methods from 1985–2009
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Scientific Data. - : Macmillan Publishers Limited. - 2052-4463. ; 2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Global environmental change has influenced lake surface temperatures, a key driver of ecosystem structure and function. Recent studies have suggested significant warming of water temperatures in individual lakes across many different regions around the world. However, the spatial and temporal coherence associated with the magnitude of these trends remains unclear. Thus, a global data set of water temperature is required to understand and synthesize global, long-term trends in surface water temperatures of inland bodies of water. We assembled a database of summer lake surface temperatures for 291 lakes collected in situ and/or by satellites for the period 1985–2009. In addition, corresponding climatic drivers (air temperatures, solar radiation, and cloud cover) and geomorphometric characteristics (latitude, longitude, elevation, lake surface area, maximum depth, mean depth, and volume) that influence lake surface temperatures were compiled for each lake. This unique dataset offers an invaluable baseline perspective on global-scale lake thermal conditions as environmental change continues.

  • Sub-Barrier Coulomb Excitation of ^110Sn and Its Implications for the ^100Sn Shell Closure
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - 1079-7114. ; 98:17, s. 172501-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The first excited 2+ state of the unstable isotope 110Sn has been studied in safe Coulomb excitation at 2.82 MeV/u using the MINIBALL array at the REX-ISOLDE post accelerator at CERN. This is the first measurement of the reduced transition probability of this state using this method for a neutron deficient Sn isotope. The strength of the approach lies in the excellent peak-to-background ratio that is achieved. The extracted reduced transition probability, B(E2:0+-->2+)=0.220±0.022e2b2, strengthens the observation of the evolution of the B(E2) values of neutron deficient Sn isotopes that was observed recently in intermediate-energy Coulomb excitation of 108Sn. It implies that the trend of these reduced transition probabilities in the even-even Sn isotopes is not symmetric with respect to the midshell mass number A=116 as 100Sn is approached.

    • In-source laser spectroscopy has been performed at CERN-ISOLDE with the RILIS laser ion source on 191-204,206,208-211,216,218Po. New information on the β decay of 199Po were extracted in the process, challenging previous results. Large-scale atomic calculations were performed to extract the changes in the mean-square charge radius δr 2 from the isotope shifts. The δ«r» 2 for the even-A isotopes reveal a large deviation from the spherical droplet model for N < 116.

  • The single-particle and collective features in the nuclei just above Sn-132
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Acta Physica Polonica B. - 0587-4254 .- 1509-5770. ; 38:4, s. 1213-1218

    • The Advanced Time Delayed method has been used to measure the lifetimes of excited states in the exotic nuclei Sb-134, Sb-135 and Te-136 populated in the beta decay of Sn-134, Sn-135 and Sn-136, respectively. High purity Sn beams were extracted at the ISOLDE separator using a novel production technique utilizing the molecular SnS+ beams to isolate Sn from contaminating other fission products. Among the new results we have identified the 1/2(+) state in Sb-135 and its E2 transition to the lower-lying 5/2(+) state was found to be surprisingly collective. This measurement represents also one of the first applications of the LaBr3 scintillator to ultra fast timing.

  • Increased synovial galectin-3 induce inflammatory fibroblast activation and osteoclastogenesis in patients with rheumatoid arthritis
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Rheumatology. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0300-9742 .- 1502-7732. ; 52:1, s. 33-41
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objective: Galectin-3 (Gal-3) has been suggested as a proinflammatory mediator in rheumatoid arthritis (RA). We aimed to study clinical and pathogenic aspects of Gal-3 in RA. Method: Plasma samples from healthy controls (n = 48) and patients with newly diagnosed, early RA were assayed for soluble Gal-3. In patients with chronic RA (n = 18), Gal-3 was measured in both plasma and synovial fluid. Synovial fluid mononuclear cells were used to purify fibroblast-like synoviocytes (FLSs) and osteoclasts. Monocultures of FLSs and autologous co-cultures of FLSs and peripheral blood mononuclear cells were established and co-incubated with a Gal-3 inhibitor. Results: Patients with early and chronic RA had persistently increased plasma levels of Gal-3 compared with controls. However, changes in plasma Gal-3 at the level of individuals were associated with long-term disease activity. In seropositive early RA patients, all patients with decreasing plasma Gal-3 from 0 to 3 months had low disease activity after 2 years (p < 0.05). Gal-3 levels in synovial fluid were markedly elevated. In vitro, co-incubation with a Gal-3 inhibitor (GB1107, 10 µM) led to a significant reduction in both interleukin-1β and tumour necrosis factor-α secretion from FLS monocultures (both p < 0.05) and decreased monocyte-derived osteoclastogenesis compared with controls (both p < 0.05). Conclusions: Our findings underscore the role of Gal-3 regarding disease activity and tissue destruction in RA. An initial decrease in plasma Gal-3 levels predicted decreased long-term disease activity. Correspondingly, a Gal-3 inhibitor decreased the activity of inflammatory FLSs and osteoclastogenesis in patients with RA.

  • A Chemical View on X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy : the ESCA Molecule and Surface-to-Bulk XPS Shifts
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: ChemPhysChem. - : Wiley. - 1439-4235 .- 1439-7641. ; 19:2, s. 169-174
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper we remind the reader of a simple, intuitive picture of chemical shifts in X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) as the difference in chemical bonding between the probed atom and its neighbor to the right in the periodic table, the so called Z + 1 approximation. We use the classical ESCA molecule, ethyl trifluoroacetate, and 4d-transition metals to explicitly demonstrate agreement between core-level shifts computed as differences between final core-hole states and the approach where each core-ionized atom is replaced by a Z + 1 atom. In this final state, or total energy picture, the XPS shift arises due to the more or less unfavorable chemical bonding of the effective nitrogen in the carbon geometry for the ESCA molecule. Surface core level shifts in metals are determined by whether the Z + 1 atom as an alloy segregates to the surface or is more soluble in the bulk. As further illustration of this more chemical picture, we compare the geometry of C 1s and O 1s core-ionized CO with that of, respectively, NO+ and CF+. The scope is not to propose a new method to compute XPS shifts but rather to stress the validity of this simple interpretation.

  • Review of 103 Swedish healthcare quality registries
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Journal of Internal Medicine. - : Wiley-Blackwell. - 0954-6820 .- 1365-2796. ; 277:1, s. 94-136
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background and objectives: In the past two decades, an increasing number of nationwide, Swedish Healthcare Quality Registries (QRs) focusing on specific disorders have been initiated, mostly by physicians. Here, we describe the purpose, organization, variables, coverage and completeness of 103 Swedish QRs.Methods: From March to September 2013, we examined the 2012 applications of 103 QRs to the Swedish Association of Local Authorities and Regions (SALAR) and also studied the annual reports from the same QRs. After initial data abstraction, the coordinator of each QR was contacted at least twice between June and October 2013 and asked to confirm the accuracy of the data retrieved from the applications and reports. Results: About 60% of the QRs covered 80% of their target population (completeness). Data recorded in Swedish QRs include aspects of disease management (diagnosis, clinical characteristics, treatment and lead times). In addition, some QRs retrieve data on self-reported quality of life (EQ5D, SF-36 and disease-specific measures), lifestyle (smoking) and general health status (World Health Organization performance status, body mass index and blood pressure). Conclusion: Detailed clinical data available in Swedish QRs complement information from government-administered registries and provide an important source not only for assessment and development of quality of care but also for research.

  • Effects of the nuclear structure of fission fragments on the high-energy prompt fission γ -ray spectrum in U 235 (nth,f)
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C. - 2469-9985. ; 100:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The prompt fission γ-ray energy spectrum for cold-neutron-induced fission of U235 was measured in the energy range Eγ=0.8-20MeV, by gaining a factor of about 105 in statistics compared to the measurements performed so far. The spectrum exhibits local bump structures at Eγ≈4MeV and ≈6MeV, and also a broad one at ≈15MeV. In order to understand the origins of these bumps, the γ-ray spectra were calculated using a statistical Hauser-Feshbach model, taking into account the deexcitation of all the possible primary fission fragments. It is shown that the bump at ≈4MeV is created by the transitions between the discrete levels in the fragments around Sn132, and the bump at ≈6MeV mostly comes from the complementary light fragments. It is also indicated that a limited number of nuclides, which have high-spin states at low excitation energies, can contribute to the bump structure around Eγ≈15MeV, induced by the transition feeding into the low-lying high-spin states.

  • Current Wildland Fire Patterns and Challenges in Europe : A Synthesis of National Perspectives
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Air, Soil and Water Research. - : SAGE Publications. - 1178-6221. ; 14, s. 1-19
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Changes in climate, land use, and land management impact the occurrence and severity of wildland fires in many parts of the world. This is particularly evident in Europe, where ongoing changes in land use have strongly modified fire patterns over the last decades. Although satellite data by the European Forest Fire Information System provide large-scale wildland fire statistics across European countries, there is still a crucial need to collect and summarize in-depth local analysis and understanding of the wildland fire condition and associated challenges across Europe. This article aims to provide a general overview of the current wildland fire patterns and challenges as perceived by national representatives, supplemented by national fire statistics (2009–2018) across Europe. For each of the 31 countries included, we present a perspective authored by scientists or practitioners from each respective country, representing a wide range of disciplines and cultural backgrounds. The authors were selected from members of the COST Action “Fire and the Earth System: Science & Society” funded by the European Commission with the aim to share knowledge and improve communication about wildland fire. Where relevant, a brief overview of key studies, particular wildland fire challenges a country is facing, and an overview of notable recent fire events are also presented. Key perceived challenges included (1) the lack of consistent and detailed records for wildland fire events, within and across countries, (2) an increase in wildland fires that pose a risk to properties and human life due to high population densities and sprawl into forested regions, and (3) the view that, irrespective of changes in management, climate change is likely to increase the frequency and impact of wildland fires in the coming decades. Addressing challenge (1) will not only be valuable in advancing national and pan-European wildland fire management strategies, but also in evaluating perceptions (2) and (3) against more robust quantitative evidence.

  • Musculoskeletal Symptoms among Computer-assisted Design (CAD) Operators and Evaluation of a Self-assessment Questionnaire
  • 1996
  • Ingår i: International journal of occupational and environmental health. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1077-3525 .- 2049-3967. ; 2:3, s. 185-194
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A self-administered questionnaire with questions related to the physical workload at video display units (VDUs) was tested for intra- and intermethod reliability among 36 men and 64 women working with research and documentation. The results showed an acceptable test-retest agreement. The answers to three questions were validated by direct measurements: the locations of keyboard and mouse on the table, and the distance between elbow and keyboard heights when working. The self-reported locations of keyboard and mouse showed good agreement with the direct measurements. A revised version of the questionnaire was used at a telecommunication laboratory to study work postures and musculoskeletal symptoms. Among CAD operators with identical work tasks, the women (n = 67) reported a higher prevalence of musculoskeletal symptoms than did the men (n = 475). Calculated prevalence rate ratios (women/men) for musculoskeletal symptoms ranged from 1.4 (low back) to 3.4 (left elbow). The CAD operators with at least 5.6 hours of mouse use/week (median) reported more symptoms in the arms than did the CAD operators with fewer hours' work. Operators with the mouse located outside an "optimal" area on the table reported more symptoms from shoulder joints (upper arms), shoulders (scapular), elbows, and wrists than did operators with the optimal mouse location. Thus, long hours of work with the mouse, as well as working with the mouse non-optimally located on the table, seemed to be risk factors for upper-limb symptoms.

  • Heterocontact-Triggered 1H to 1T′ Phase Transition in CVD-Grown Monolayer MoTe2 : Implications for Low Contact Resistance Electronic Devices
  • Ingår i: ACS Applied Nano Materials. - 2574-0970.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Single-layer molybdenum ditelluride (MoTe2) has attracted attention due to the smaller energy difference between the semiconducting (1H) and semimetallic (1T′) phases with respect to other two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs). Understanding the phenomenon of polymorphism between these structural phases is of great fundamental and practical importance. In this paper, we report a 1H to 1T′ phase transition occurring during the chemical vapor deposition (CVD) synthesis of single-layer MoTe2 at 730 °C. The transformation originates at the heterocontact between monoclinic and hexagonal crystals and progresses to either yield a partial or complete 1H to 1T′ phase transition. Microscopic and spectroscopic analyses of the MoTe2 crystals reveal the presence of Te vacancies and mirror twin boundaries (MTB) domains in the hexagonal phase. The experimental observations and theoretical simulations indicate that the combination of heterocontact formation and Te vacancies are relevant triggering mechanisms in the observed transformation. By advancing in the understanding and controlling of the direct synthesis of lateral 1T′/1H heterostructures, this work contributes to the development of MoTe2-based electronic and optoelectronic devices with low contact resistance.

  • Mombasa: options for the port city interface – final report
  • 2017
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Managing port – city interfaces is a complex issue that typically changes over time in different development phases for a specific port and city development, like in Mombasa. There is often an asymmetric distribution of costs and benefits, where a port largely benefits a hinterland area and not the surrounding area suffering from many of the costs associated with a transit oriented port. This appears to be the case for Mombasa, Kenya. The port contributes positively to employment and business generation in Mombasa County, but it also generates local negative effects such as air pollution from land and marine transport, noise, congestion and land take. This mismatch between the distribution of costs and benefits led the County Government to request the World Bank to undertake this study. The study was supported by the Urban Logistics and Port city Development window of the Multi-Donor Trust Fund for Sustainable Logistics (MDTF-SL) Trust Fund.1 The overall objective of the study is to identify actionable policy options for the City of Mombasa to both reduce the negative externalities, and increase potential positive externalities, created as a result of the current location and activities of the port of Mombasa. The immediate objective of the study is met by performing three tasks: 1. Conduct a literature study on experiences and successful policies on dealing with port – city interfaces; 2. Review and present the current situation in respect of the port – city interface in Mombasa; and 3. Develop a data driven decision support tool and to illustrate the impacts of different defined policy options for improving the port city interface in Mombasa. This report presents the findings of the study, and presents international experiences on port – city interface, together with the situation in Mombasa specifically, the developed decision support tool and the impacts of a number of policy options on the port - city interface in Mombasa. The report is intended to contribute to an increased understanding of the problem of the port – city interface and how to facilitate dialogues between stakeholders and utilize synergies.

  • Assisterad befruktning. Uppföljning av barn som nått skolåldern
  • 2001

  • The effect of natural disturbances on forest biodiversity : an ecological synthesis
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Biological Reviews. - : Wiley. - 1464-7931 .- 1469-185X. ; 97:5, s. 1930-1947
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Disturbances alter biodiversity via their specific characteristics, including severity and extent in the landscape, which act at different temporal and spatial scales. Biodiversity response to disturbance also depends on the community characteristics and habitat requirements of species. Untangling the mechanistic interplay of these factors has guided disturbance ecology for decades, generating mixed scientific evidence of biodiversity responses to disturbance. Understanding the impact of natural disturbances on biodiversity is increasingly important due to human-induced changes in natural disturbance regimes. In many areas, major natural forest disturbances, such as wildfires, windstorms, and insect outbreaks, are becoming more frequent, intense, severe, and widespread due to climate change and land-use change. Conversely, the suppression of natural disturbances threatens disturbance-dependent biota. Using a meta-analytic approach, we analysed a global data set (with most sampling concentrated in temperate and boreal secondary forests) of species assemblages of 26 taxonomic groups, including plants, animals, and fungi collected from forests affected by wildfires, windstorms, and insect outbreaks. The overall effect of natural disturbances on α-diversity did not differ significantly from zero, but some taxonomic groups responded positively to disturbance, while others tended to respond negatively. Disturbance was beneficial for taxonomic groups preferring conditions associated with open canopies (e.g. hymenopterans and hoverflies), whereas ground-dwelling groups and/or groups typically associated with shady conditions (e.g. epigeic lichens and mycorrhizal fungi) were more likely to be negatively impacted by disturbance. Across all taxonomic groups, the highest α-diversity in disturbed forest patches occurred under moderate disturbance severity, i.e. with approximately 55% of trees killed by disturbance. We further extended our meta-analysis by applying a unified diversity concept based on Hill numbers to estimate α-diversity changes in different taxonomic groups across a gradient of disturbance severity measured at the stand scale and incorporating other disturbance features. We found that disturbance severity negatively affected diversity for Hill number q = 0 but not for q = 1 and q = 2, indicating that diversity–disturbance relationships are shaped by species relative abundances. Our synthesis of α-diversity was extended by a synthesis of disturbance-induced change in species assemblages, and revealed that disturbance changes the β-diversity of multiple taxonomic groups, including some groups that were not affected at the α-diversity level (birds and woody plants). Finally, we used mixed rarefaction/extrapolation to estimate biodiversity change as a function of the proportion of forests that were disturbed, i.e. the disturbance extent measured at the landscape scale. The comparison of intact and naturally disturbed forests revealed that both types of forests provide habitat for unique species assemblages, whereas species diversity in the mixture of disturbed and undisturbed forests peaked at intermediate values of disturbance extent in the simulated landscape. Hence, the relationship between α-diversity and disturbance severity in disturbed forest stands was strikingly similar to the relationship between species richness and disturbance extent in a landscape consisting of both disturbed and undisturbed forest habitats. This result suggests that both moderate disturbance severity and moderate disturbance extent support the highest levels of biodiversity in contemporary forest landscapes.
