  • Unions and the rights of migrants in the long run
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Journal of European Social Policy. - : SAGE Publications. - 0958-9287 .- 1461-7269. ; 30:5, s. 557-570
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We use historical data on union density and new historical data on policies toward migrants to study the long-run relationship between the strength of trade unions and the social and economic rights of migrants in the Global North. In countries with strong trade unions, there was, for a long time, a widening distance between the rights of migrants and the rights of citizens, probably because the rights of citizens expanded sooner and more quickly than the rights of migrants. Over time, however, the differences between countries with strong and weak unions have diminished, and in more recent years, the 'rights gap' between citizens and migrants has in fact been smaller in countries with strong unions than in countries with weak unions.

  • The field of EU civil society: organizational resources and elite positions1
  • 2018
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Since the turn of the Millennium, there have been extensive debates on the relationship between the European Union (EU) and civil society. EU institutions have tended to regard associations and organizations of civil society as way to counterbalance the EU’s democratic deficit and/or as a means to foster effective implementation of policies. Much research has accordingly analysed how EU discourses, policies and governance arrangements shape civil society and civil society actors operating in Brussels. However, we find much less scholarly attention into relations internal to civil society itself – that is, how civil society actors cooperate and form alliances but also compete over positions, resources and the “rules of the game”. This oversight is unfortunate, as the increased access for civil society actors to EU institutions signify that some of them may become important power-holders themselves and therefore should be open to scrutiny. Research is hence needed to explore power relations and stratifications within civil society, and this paper is a step in that direction. Based on an analysis of economic, political and social and network resources, across both organizational and individual dimensions, this paper argues that the field is divided between positions of political influence and positions of civic representation where former draws more heavily on various forms of political and economic resources where the latter requires forms social and network resources. The paper engages in studies of elite profiles, discussing the outline of a civil society elite across field divides.

  • Affective Naturalization : Practices of Citizenship Conferment
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Alternatives. - : SAGE Publications. - 0304-3754. ; 44:3–4, s. 138-154
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In an era of increased mobility, naturalization is crucial for shaping international legal and political identities. It is therefore important to move beyond the legal definition of naturalization in order to comprehend its affective and social meaning. This article develops the notion “affective naturalization” by combining the literature of affect and politics with insights from economic anthropology and by focusing on the varied practices of citizenship conferment. Through different modes of naturalization, citizenship can be offered as a gift, it can take the form of a birthright, it may be obtained as a prize that one has achieved, and it can occasionally be bought. The specific practice of conferment changes the identity of the citizenship/“thing” that is being acquired, the roles of the giver and the receiver as well as the interrelation between them. The different practices of conferment thus reflect as well as constitute social relations in differing ways.

  • Citizenship and mobility of the poor: Sweden during the 19th century
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Sociology. - 0003-9756.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The distinctive features of the modern form of citizenship include, among other things, that it is both internally inclusive and externally exclusive; that it establishes legal equality so that membership of the state supersedes all other memberships and allegiances; and that it defines membership as independent of residence. These characteristics largely evolved during the “long nineteenth century”, the period between the French Revolution and the First World War. Similar to that of today, the historical situation in which citizenship evolved was one of intensified mobility. With the example of Sweden, this article finds that citizenship, in both its internal and external dimensions, was elaborated partly as a way to manage the mobility of the migrant poor. The contours of citizenship emerged as authorities aimed to control and direct the movement of the poor, which preceded control efforts. This has implications for our understanding of citizenship as well as of the state, and highlights the agency of migrants.

  • Citizenship Capital
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Global Society. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1360-0826 .- 1469-798X. ; 34:4, s. 528-551
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article examines the citizenship dimension of transnational inequalities. It is clear that some citizenships offer great advantages while others are liabilities for the individual, and the aim of this present article is to develop a conceptualisation of citizenship and inequality, in order to be able to assess and compare them. For this purpose, elements of Pierre Bourdieu's sociology are utilized. The argument is that citizenship can be thought of as a form of capital in this Bourdieusian sense – that is, as a resource with which individuals are more or less endowed, and which impacts on people's transnational social positions, their capacities for action, their strategies and perceptions. The main contribution is to develop this idea, which is referred to as “citizenship capital”. Its usefulness is demonstrated by considering its interaction with economic capital for shaping positions in transnational social space.

  • For love and for life: emotional dynamics at the World Congress of Families
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Global Discourse. - 2043-7897. ; 10:2-3, s. 303-320
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The article explores the relationship between emotions, collective identity and mobilisation in conservative social movements through an analysis of the World Congress of Families’ (WCF) 13th international conference, held in Verona in March 2019. WCF promotes Christian family values and brings together anti-gay, anti-feminist and anti-abortion activists, religious leaders, and politicians from around the world. We attended the congress and base our analysis on observations and theories on social movements and emotions. Both positive and negative emotions as well as symbols and metaphors were used as building blocks in the emotional work that holds this conservative movement together. In order to provide a deeper understanding of the mechanisms we show how passive emotions are turned into active, how the differences between ‘us’ and ‘them’ are constructed, and how the combination of positive and negative emotions helps motivate action.
