  • EPOXI: Comet 103P/Hartley 2 Observations from a Worldwide Campaign
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Astrophysical Journal Letters. - London : IOP. - 2041-8213 .- 2041-8205. ; 734:L1, s. 1-9
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Earth- and space-based observations provide synergistic information for space mission encounters by providing data over longer timescales, at different wavelengths and using techniques that are impossible with an in situ flyby. We report here such observations in support of the EPOXI spacecraft flyby of comet 103P/Hartley 2. The nucleus is small and dark, and exhibited a very rapidly changing rotation period. Prior to the onset of activity, the period was ~16.4?hr. Starting in 2010 August the period changed from 16.6?hr to near 19?hr in December. With respect to dust composition, most volatiles and carbon and nitrogen isotope ratios, the comet is similar to other Jupiter-family comets. What is unusual is the dominance of CO 2 -driven activity near perihelion, which likely persists out to aphelion. Near perihelion the comet nucleus was surrounded by a large halo of water-ice grains that contributed significantly to the total water production.

  • The anomalous magnetic moment of the muon in the Standard Model
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Physics reports. - : Elsevier BV. - 0370-1573 .- 1873-6270. ; 887, s. 1-166
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We review the present status of the Standard Model calculation of the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon. This is performed in a perturbative expansion in the fine-structure constant α and is broken down into pure QED, electroweak, and hadronic contributions. The pure QED contribution is by far the largest and has been evaluated up to and including O(α5) with negligible numerical uncertainty. The electroweak contribution is suppressed by (mμ/MW)2 and only shows up at the level of the seventh significant digit. It has been evaluated up to two loops and is known to better than one percent. Hadronic contributions are the most difficult to calculate and are responsible for almost all of the theoretical uncertainty. The leading hadronic contribution appears at O(α2) and is due to hadronic vacuum polarization, whereas at O(α3) the hadronic light-by-light scattering contribution appears. Given the low characteristic scale of this observable, these contributions have to be calculated with nonperturbative methods, in particular, dispersion relations and the lattice approach to QCD. The largest part of this review is dedicated to a detailed account of recent efforts to improve the calculation of these two contributions with either a data-driven, dispersive approach, or a first-principle, lattice-QCD approach. The final result reads aμSM = 116 591 810(43) x 10-11 and is smaller than the Brookhaven measurement by 3.7 σ. The experimental uncertainty will soon be reduced by up to a factor four by the new experiment currently running at Fermilab, and also by the future J-PARC experiment. This and the prospects to further reduce the theoretical uncertainty in the near future - which are also discussed here - make this quantity one of the most promising places to look for evidence of new physics.

  • Temperature limits to deep subseafloor life in the Nankai Trough subduction zone
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Science. - : American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). - 0036-8075 .- 1095-9203. ; 370:6521, s. 1230-1234
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Microorganisms in marine subsurface sediments substantially contribute to global biomass. Sediments warmer than 40 degrees C account for roughly half the marine sediment volume, but the processes mediated by microbial populations in these hard-to-access environments are poorly understood. We investigated microbial life in up to 1.2-kilometer-deep and up to 120 degrees C hot sediments in the Nankai Trough subduction zone. Above 45 degrees C, concentrations of vegetative cells drop two orders of magnitude and endospores become more than 6000 times more abundant than vegetative cells. Methane is biologically produced and oxidized until sediments reach 80 degrees to 85 degrees C. In 100 degrees to 120 degrees C sediments, isotopic evidence and increased cell concentrations demonstrate the activity of acetate-degrading hyperthermophiles. Above 45 degrees C, populated zones alternate with zones up to 192 meters thick where microbes were undetectable.

  • Extremely high quantum efficiency of donor-acceptor-pair emission in N-and-B-doped 6H-SiC
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Journal of Applied Physics. - : AIP Publishing. - 0021-8979 .- 1089-7550. ; 99:9
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • High-efficiency visible light emission in N-and-B-doped 6H-SiC epilayers was observed in photoluminescence measurements at room temperature. The orange-yellow light emission due to the recombination of donor-acceptor pairs (DAPs) has a broad spectrum with a peak wavelength of 576 nm and a full width at half maximum of 110 nm at 250 K. The high B concentration of more than 1018 cm-3 improves the emission efficiency of the DAP recombination at a high temperature. Compared with the photoluminescence spectrum of GaN at 10 K, a high quantum efficiency of 95% was estimated for the highly B-doped sample. From time-resolved photoluminescence measurements, a DAP recombination time of 5.0 ms was obtained, which is in good agreement with the calculated value by the rate equation with the assumption of a 95% internal quantum efficiency. This is quite promising as a light-emitting medium by optical pumping, as well as monolithic light sources combined with nitride-based light-emitting diodes grown on the DA-doped SiC epilayer. © 2006 American Institute of Physics.

  • Parasympathetic Reinnervation Accompanied By Improved Post-Exercise Heart Rate Recovery and Quality of Life in Heart Transplant Recipients
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: The Journal of Heart and Lung Transplantation. - : Elsevier. - 1053-2498 .- 1557-3117. ; 34:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose: Although sympathetic reinnervation is accompanied by the improvement of exercise tolerability during several years after heart trans-plantation (HTx), little is known about parasympathetic reinnervation and its clinical impact. Methods: We enrolled 21 recipients (40 ± 16 years, 71% male) who had received successive cardiopulmonary exercise testing at 6 months, 1, and 2 years after HTx. They also received heart rate (HR) variability analy-ses at post-HTx 6 months, and Minnesota Living with Heart failure (HF) Questionnaire at post-HTx 6 months and 2 years. Results: Exercise parameters such as peak oxygen consumption or maximum load remained unchanged, whereas recovery parameters including HR recov-ery during 2 minutes and the delay of peak HR, both influened by parasym-pathetic activity, improved significantly during post-HTx 2 years (p<0.05 for both). Among 12 recipients who had also received HR variability analyses at 6 months after HTx, high frequency power, representing parasympathetic activity, was significantly associated with 2 recovery parameters (p<0.05 for all). Recipients with improved recovery parameters enjoyed a better HF-specific quality of life that was demonstrated by improved Minnesota Living with HF Questionnaire at post-HTx 2 years. Conclusion: Parasympathetic reinnervation emerges along with improved post-exercise recovery of HR and quality of life during post-HTx 2 years.

  • Search formagnetic monopoles with the MoEDAL prototype trapping detector in 8 TeV proton-proton collisions at the LHC
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Journal of High Energy Physics (JHEP). - 1126-6708 .- 1029-8479. ; :8
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The MoEDAL experiment is designed to search for magnetic monopoles and other highly-ionising particles produced in high-energy collisions at the LHC. The largely passive MoEDAL detector, deployed at Interaction Point 8 on the LHC ring, relies on two dedicated direct detection techniques. The first technique is based on stacks of nuclear-track detectors with surface area similar to 18 m(2), sensitive to particle ionisation exceeding a high threshold. These detectors are analysed offline by optical scanning microscopes. The second technique is based on the trapping of charged particles in an array of roughly 800 kg of aluminium samples. These samples are monitored offline for the presence of trapped magnetic charge at a remote superconducting magnetometer facility. We present here the results of a search for magnetic monopoles using a 160 kg prototype MoEDAL trapping detector exposed to 8TeV proton-proton collisions at the LHC, for an integrated luminosity of 0.75 fb(-1). No magnetic charge exceeding 0.5g(D) (where g(D) is the Dirac magnetic charge) is measured in any of the exposed samples, allowing limits to be placed on monopole production in the mass range 100 GeV <= m <= 3500 GeV. Model-independent cross-section limits are presented in fiducial regions of monopole energy and direction for 1g(D) <= vertical bar g vertical bar <= 6g(D), and model-dependent cross-section limits are obtained for Drell-Yan pair production of spin-1/2 and spin-0 monopoles for 1g(D) <= vertical bar g vertical bar <= 4g(D). Under the assumption of Drell-Yan cross sections, mass limits are derived for vertical bar g vertical bar = 2g(D) and vertical bar g vertical bar = 3g(D) for the first time at the LHC, surpassing the results from previous collider experiments.

  • Influence of grid blast on the fatigue strength improvement by peening
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Bridge Maintenance, Safety, Management, Life-Cycle Sustainability and Innovations - Proceedings of the 10th International Conference on Bridge Maintenance, Safety and Management, IABMAS 2020. - : CRC Press/Balkema. ; , s. 3165-3173
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this study, to evaluate the influence of grid blast following to the peening process on the fatigue strength improvement, residual stress measurement and fatigue tests have been conducted. Examined peening processes were UIT, PPP and HP with ICR apparatus. For the residual stress measurement, plate and on-bead specimens made of JIS-SM400, SBHS400, SBHS500 and SBHS700 were used, and X-ray diffraction method was applied to the measurement. The results concluded that the differences in the compressive residual stress distribution in the vicinity of peened area with and without blast are not so significant. For the fatigue tests, out-of-plane gusset welded joint specimens made of JIS-SM490 and SBHS500 were used. Fatigue tests were conducted under stress ratio R=0.0 and 0.5. Fatigue tests showed that fatigue strength of peened specimens with blast are almost the same as that of peened specimens without blast, and those results were observed independently of steel grade and of peening methods.

  • Insights into Land Plant Evolution Garnered from the Marchantia polymorpha Genome
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Cell. - : Elsevier BV. - 0092-8674 .- 1097-4172. ; 171:2, s. 287-304.15
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The evolution of land flora transformed the terrestrial environment. Land plants evolved from an ancestral charophycean alga from which they inherited developmental, biochemical, and cell biological attributes. Additional biochemical and physiological adaptations to land, and a life cycle with an alternation between multicellular haploid and diploid generations that facilitated efficient dispersal of desiccation tolerant spores, evolved in the ancestral land plant. We analyzed the genome of the liverwort Marchantia polymorpha, a member of a basal land plant lineage. Relative to charophycean algae, land plant genomes are characterized by genes encoding novel biochemical pathways, new phytohormone signaling pathways (notably auxin), expanded repertoires of signaling pathways, and increased diversity in some transcription factor families. Compared with other sequenced land plants, M. polymorpha exhibits low genetic redundancy in most regulatory pathways, with this portion of its genome resembling that predicted for the ancestral land plant.
