    • The nucleus Cd-110 has been studied using the C-13 and O-18 induced reactions and the NORDBALL multi-detector array. The yrast band was observed to I(pi) = 28+ and a large number of side bands were identified. The h11/2 neutrons were found to play a dominant role in the observed rotational structures. The weakly populated yrast 3187 keV 8+ state is interpreted as arising from the proton g9/2(-2) configuration. Collective bands, where the band members are connected by DELTAI = 1 transitions and where the DELTAI = 2 transitions are not observed, are also reported. These bands are interpreted to have prolate configurations involving both the h11/2 neutrons and the g9/2 protons. The experimental data are discussed in terms of the total routhian surface and cranked shell model calculations.

    • AIM: The aim of this study was to establish a method of investigating intestinal eosinophil and neutrophil granulocytes by flow cytometry, and to compare the distribution and activity of these cells in different stages of ulcerative colitis (UC). METHODS: Biopsy samples were taken from six locations of the entire colon and from the terminal ileum in 10 patients with active total UC, 10 patients with inactive total UC, eight patients with active distal UC, and 11 control subjects. Cell suspensions from biopsies and from peripheral blood were incubated with fluorophore conjugated monoclonal antibodies. The use of scatter plot-gating and specific antibodies was established in a flow cytometry assay. RESULTS: Eosinophils were more numerous and more active in patients with active UC than in controls. Interestingly, during inactive UC, the number of activated eosinophils was even larger. Eosinophil activity was high in the rectum of patients with distal colitis but was also slightly elevated in the proximal colon. Neutrophils were increased in number and activity during active but not inactive UC. In patients with distal colitis, activated neutrophils were only found in the sigmoid colon and rectum. CONCLUSION: With this method, we confirm that neutrophils participate in the inflammatory process during active UC, and that they express a resting phenotype during remission. The finding of activated eosinophils in inflamed intestine strengthens the view of these cells as proinflammatory and tissue damaging. Nevertheless, our new finding of high eosinophil activation during inactive UC suggests that eosinophils play a role in repair of injured epithelium.

  • A key requirement for CD300f in innate immune responses of eosinophils in colitis

    • Eosinophils are traditionally studied in the context of type 2 immune responses. However, recent studies highlight key innate immune functions for eosinophils especially in colonic inflammation. Surprisingly, molecular pathways regulating innate immune activities of eosinophil are largely unknown. Wehave recently shown that the CD300f is highly expressed by colonic eosinophils. Nonetheless, the role of CD300f in governing innate immune eosinophil activities is ill-defined. RNA sequencing of 162 pediatric Crohn's disease patients revealed upregulation of multiple Cd300 family members, which correlated with the presence of severe ulcerations and inflammation. Increased expression of CD300 family receptors was also observed in active ulcerative colitis (UC) and in mice following induction of experimental colitis. Specifically, the expression of CD300f was dynamically regulated in monocytes and eosinophils. Dextran sodium sulfate (DSS)-treated Cd300f (-/-) mice exhibit attenuated disease activity and histopathology in comparison with DSS-treated wild type (WT). Decreased disease activity in Cd300f (-/-) mice was accompanied with reduced inflammatory cell infiltration and nearly abolished production of pro-inflammatory cytokines. Monocyte depletion and chimeric bone marrow transfer experiments revealed a cell-specific requirement for CD300f in innate immune activation of eosinophils. Collectively, we uncover a new pathway regulating innate immune activities of eosinophils, a finding with significant implications in eosinophil-associated gastrointestinal diseases.

  • Pathways towards a sustainable future envisioned by early-career conservation researchers

    • Scientists have warned decision-makers about the severe consequences of the global environmental crisis since the 1970s. Yet ecological degradation continues and little has been done to address climate change. We investigated early-career conservation researchers' (ECR) perspectives on, and prioritization of, actions furthering sustainability. We conducted a survey (n = 67) and an interactive workshop (n = 35) for ECR attendees of the 5th European Congress of Conservation Biology (2018). Building on these data and discussions, we identified ongoing and forthcoming advances in conservation science. These include increased transdisciplinarity, science communication, advocacy in conservation, and adoption of a transformation-oriented social-ecological systems approach to research. The respondents and participants had diverse perspectives on how to achieve sustainability. Reformist actions were emphasized as paving the way for more radical changes in the economic system and societal values linked to the environment and inequality. Our findings suggest that achieving sustainability requires a strategy that (1) incorporates the multiplicity of people's views, (2) places a greater value on nature, and (3) encourages systemic transformation across political, social, educational, and economic realms on multiple levels. We introduce a framework for ECRs to inspire their research and practice within conservation science to achieve real change in protecting biological diversity.

    • It is our great pleasure to welcome you to this issue of the Proceedings of the ACM on Human- Computer Interaction, on the contributions of the research community Computer-Supported Cooperative Work and Social Computing (CSCW). This issue contains a carefully selected set of papers, accepted through our review process from among the 658 world-wide articles submitted by the Spring 2019 deadline. After the first round of peer review, 325 (49.4%) papers were invited to the Revise and Resubmit phase. After receiving the revised submissions, the external reviewers and the program committee reviewed all second round contributions. Finally, the program committee came together for a three-day online editorial committee meeting, held to allow for collective deliberation. Ultimately, 205 papers (31.2%) were accepted.

    • Background: Early detection of treatment response is important for the management of patients with malignant brain tumors such as glioblastoma to assure good quality of life in relation to therapeutic efficacy. Aim: To investigate whether parametric response mapping (PRM) with diffusion MRI may provide prognostic information at an early stage of standard therapy for glioblastoma. Materials and methods: This prospective study included 31 patients newly diagnosed with glioblastoma WHO grade IV, planned for primary standard postoperative treatment with radiotherapy 60Gy/30 fractions with concomitant and adjuvant Temozolomide. MRI follow-up including diffusion and perfusion weighting was performed at 3 T at start of postoperative chemoradiotherapy, three weeks into treatment, and then regularly until twelve months postoperatively. Regional mean diffusivity (MD) changes were analyzed voxel-wise using the PRM method (MD-PRM). At eight and twelve months postoperatively, after completion of standard treatment, patients were classified using conventional MRI and clinical evaluation as either having stable disease (SD, including partial response) or progressive disease (PD). It was assessed whether MD-PRM differed between patients having SD versus PD and whether it predicted the risk of disease progression (progression-free survival, PFS) or death (overall survival, OS). A subgroup analysis was performed that compared MD-PRM between SD and PD in patients only undergoing diagnostic biopsy. MGMT-promotor methylation status (O6-methylguanine-DNA methyltransferase) was registered and analyzed with respect to PFS, OS and MD-PRM. Results: Of the 31 patients analyzed: 21 were operated by resection and ten by diagnostic biopsy. At eight months, 19 patients had SD and twelve had PD. At twelve months, ten patients had SD and 20 had PD, out of which ten were deceased within twelve months and one was deceased without known tumor progression. Median PFS was nine months, and median OS was 17 months. Eleven patients had methylated MGMT-promotor, 16 were MGMT unmethylated, and four had unknown MGMT-status. MD-PRM did not significantly predict patients having SD versus PD neither at eight nor at twelve months. Patients with an above median MD-PRM reduction had a slightly longer PFS (P = 0.015) in Kaplan-Maier analysis, as well as a non-significantly longer OS (P = 0.099). In the subgroup of patients only undergoing biopsy, total MD-PRM change at three weeks was generally higher for patients with SD than for patients with PD at eight months, although no tests were performed. MGMT status strongly predicted both PFS and OS but not MD-PRM change. Conclusion: MD-PRM at three weeks was not demonstrated to be predictive of treatment response, disease progression, or survival. Preliminary results suggested a higher predictive value in non-resected patients, although this needs to be evaluated in future studies.

The target is to create a fuel cell with a capacity of a few mW cm(-2) with starch as a fuel source. Starch, glucose, and sorbitol were tested as fuels for the fuel cell. With the selected fuel cell type and with glucose as the fuel, a maximum current density of 8 mA cm(-2) with a voltage of 0.5 V was obtained.

    • In the present study, a direct-mode glucose fuel cell with a neutral-state and near-neutral-state aqueous electrolytes is studied. The near-neutral state electrolytes are important for two reasons. Firstly, the pH of the electrolytes would be near the pH of liquid in living cells. Secondly, the neutral electrolyte would enable good corrosion resistance of catalyst materials. Three different catalyst materials, i.e. Pt-Pd, Raney-Ni and Ni-porphyrin complex, are tested in an anode half-cell configuration with one neutral-state (battery water) and with two near-neutral-state aqueous electrolytes, i.e. modified Krebs-Ringer (K-R) and phosphate, both buffered to a pH value of 7.4. Pt-Pd catalyst in the aqueous K-R electrolyte maintains the negative voltage of the anode half cell with higher current densities that the nickel catalysts do. To estimate the operation of the direct-mode glucose fuel cell, the K-R electrolyte from the anode half-cell tests is tested also in the cathode half-cell with combined catalyst of cobalt porphyrin complex and of spinel. The open circuit voltages and polarisation curves are measured. Also, preliminary results and oxidation degrees of glucose in the tests are shown. Based on our half cell measurements, there are high development demands for the electro-catalysts, which could work efficiently in the near-neutral-state electrolytes.

The direct-mode fuel cell is exposed to an externally generated electromagnetic field between electrodes to cause both the splitting of the fuel molecule into smaller units (i.e. electrochemical reforming) and an increase in the activity of catalyst materials on the fuel before electrochemical oxidation. The target is to create a fuel cell with a capacity range of a few mW cm(-2) with glucose as a fuel. In the selected fuel cell type with glucose as the fuel, a maximum current density of 13 mA cm(-2) was obtained. On the basis of the tests it seems to be possible to use the glucose-fuelled cell in small-scale applications, e. g. in small electronic devices.

    • This study deals with the R&D regarding the direct glucose fuel cell with a capacity of increasing the power density with glucose as a fuel. The direct-mode fuel cell in which the fuel and the alkaline electrolyte are mixed with each other is tested at room temperature. The direct-mode fuel cell is exposed to an externally generated electromagnetic field with 4 GHz sine signals between electrodes to cause both the splitting of the fuel molecule and the electrochemical oxidation. As a result from the use of the higher frequency signals, a maximum current density of 15 mAcm-2 has been achieved with the total voltage of 0.5 V.

    • Background: Ulcerative colitis (UC) in patients with the severe disease primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC) constitutes a distinct clinical phenotype (PSC-UC) with a high incidence of colorectal cancer. Today, PSC-UC diagnosis is built on clinical observations only. Tissue factor (TF) has a potential use in UC diagnostics, and also in colorectal cancer prognostication. Here we evaluate TF expression in an inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) cohort, with special focus on differences between UC and PSC-UC patients.Materials and methods: Colonic biopsies from UC (n = 23), PSC (n = 24), and healthy controls (n = 11) were stained for TF by immunohistochemistry. Mononuclear cell contribution to TF expression was verified using flow cytometry.Results: TF was distributed at three distinct colonic locations: in subepithelial pericryptal sheath cells, in mononuclear cells, and in the intestinal stroma. In contrast to UC-where inflammation was accompanied with TF up-regulation-PSC-UC activity remained low during inflammation. Stromal TF positivity was found exclusively in ongoing inflammation.Conclusion: Our study provides additional support for a divergent pathogenesis in PSC-UC, with an inflammatory environment that differs from classical UC. Stromal TF emerges as a new marker of colonic inflammation.
