  • In silico promoter analysis and functional validation identify CmZFH, the co-regulator of hypoxia-responsive genes CmScylla and CmLPCAT
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Insect Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. - : Elsevier. - 0965-1748 .- 1879-0240. ; 140
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Oxygen (O2) plays an essential role in aerobic organisms including terrestrial insects. Under hypoxic stress, the cowpea bruchid (Callosobruchus maculatus) ceases feeding and growth. However, larvae, particularly 4th instar larvae exhibit very high tolerance to hypoxia and can recover normal growth once brought to normoxia. To better understand the molecular mechanism that enables insects to cope with low O2 stress, we performed RNA-seq to distinguish hypoxia-responsive genes in midguts and subsequently identified potential common cis-elements in promoters of hypoxia-induced and -repressed genes, respectively. Selected elements were subjected to gel-shift and transient transfection assays to confirm their cis-regulatory function. Of these putative common cis-elements, AREB6 appeared to regulate the expression of CmLPCAT and CmScylla, two hypoxia-induced genes. CmZFH, the putative AREB6-binding protein, was hypoxia-inducible. Transient expression of CmZFH in Drosophila S2 cells activated CmLPCAT and CmScylla, and their induction was likely through interaction of CmZFH with AREB6. Binding to AREB6 was further confirmed by bacterially expressed CmZFH recombinant protein. Deletion analyses indicated that the N-terminal zinc-finger cluster of CmZFH was the key AREB6-binding domain. Through in silico and experimental exploration, we discovered novel transcriptional regulatory components associated with gene expression dynamics under hypoxia that facilitated insect survival.

  • Load Coupling and Energy Optimization in Multi-Cell and Multi-Carrier NOMA Networks
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: IEEE Transactions on Vehicular Technology. - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). - 0018-9545 .- 1939-9359. ; 68:11, s. 11323-11337
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, we investigate energy optimization in multi-cell and multi-carrier non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) networks. We apply a load-coupling model for NOMA networks to capture the coupling relation of mutual interference among cells. With this analytical tool, we formulate an energy minimization problem in a NOMA-based load-coupled system, where optimizing load-rate-power allocation, and determining decoding order and user grouping are the key aspects. Theoretically, we prove that the minimum consumed energy can be achieved by using all the time-frequency resources in each cell to deliver users' demand, and allowing all the users to share resource units. From a practical perspective, we consider three types of NOMA grouping schemes, i.e., all-user grouping, partitioned and non-partitioned grouping. We develop tailored solutions for each grouping scheme to enable efficient load-rate-power optimization. These three algorithmic components are embedded into a power-adjustment framework to provide energy-efficient solutions for NOMA networks. Numerical results demonstrate promising energy-saving gains of NOMA over orthogonal multiple access in large-scale cellular networks, in particular for high-demand and resource-limited scenarios. The results also show fast convergence of the proposed algorithms and demonstrate the effectiveness of the solutions.

  • Successive Interference Cancellation for Throughput Maximization in Wireless Powered Communication Networks
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: 2016 IEEE 84TH VEHICULAR TECHNOLOGY CONFERENCE (VTC FALL). - : IEEE. - 9781509017010
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In wireless powered communication networks (WPCNs), each user node, e.g., wireless powered sensor, is capable of either harvesting energy from a power station or transmitting data to a sink node. In the previous works, time division multiple access (TDMA) is typically used for transmission scheduling in WPCNs, that is, only one node can transmit data in one time slot. The spectrum efficiency is therefore limited by this orthogonality in time-domain scheduling. In this paper, to maximize the throughput in WPCNs, we present a new scheduling approach for energy harvesting and data transmission. Unlike TDMA, we consider that multiple nodes can simultaneously transmit their data in the same time slot, and the signals are separated at the sink node by performing successive interference cancellation (SIC). We formulate the throughput maximization problem as a linear programming problem. For solving the large scale instances, we design an algorithmic framework based on column generation. Numerical results demonstrate that compared to the TDMA based scheduling approach, substantial throughput improvement is achieved by the proposed algorithm.

  • An international, interprofessional investigation of the self-reported podcast listening habits of emergency clinicians: A METRIQ Study
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: CJEM. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1481-8043 .- 1481-8035. ; 22:1, s. 112-117
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • ObjectivesPodcasts are increasingly being used for medical education. A deeper understanding of usage patterns would inform both producers and researchers of medical podcasts. We aimed to determine how and why podcasts are used by emergency medicine and critical care clinicians.MethodsAn international interprofessional sample (medical students, residents, physicians, nurses, physician assistants, and paramedics) was recruited through direct contact and a multimodal social media (Twitter and Facebook) campaign. Each participant completed a survey outlining how and why they utilize medical podcasts. Recruitment materials included an infographic and study website.Results390 participants from 33 countries and 4 professions (medicine, nursing, paramedicine, physician assistant) completed the survey. Participants most frequently listened to medical podcasts to review new literature (75.8%), learn core material (75.1%), and refresh memory (71.8%). The majority (62.6%) were aware of the ability to listen at increased speeds, but most (76.9%) listened at 1.0 x (normal) speed. All but 25 (6.4%) participants concurrently performed other tasks while listening. Driving (72.3%), exercising (39.7%), and completing chores (39.2%) were the most common. A minority of participants used active learning techniques such as pausing, rewinding, and replaying segments of the podcast. Very few listened to podcasts multiple times.ConclusionsAn international cohort of emergency clinicians use medical podcasts predominantly for learning. Their listening habits (rarely employing active learning strategies and frequently performing concurrent tasks) may not support this goal. Further exploration of the impact of these activities on learning from podcasts is warranted.

  • Organic Polymer Dots as Photocatalysts for Visible Light-Driven Hydrogen Generation
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Angewandte Chemie International Edition. - : Wiley. - 1433-7851 .- 1521-3773. ; 55:40, s. 12306-12310
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • For the first time, organic semiconducting polymer dots (Pdots) based on poly[(9,9'-dioctylfluorenyl-2,7-diyl)-co-(1,4-benzo-{2,1', 3} thiadiazole)] (PFBT) and polystyrene grafting with carboxyl-group-functionalized ethylene oxide (PS-PEG-COOH) are introduced as a photocatalyst towards visible-light-driven hydrogen generation in a completely organic solvent-free system. With these organic Pdots as the photocatalyst, an impressive initial rate constant of 8.3 mmol h(-1) g(-1) was obtained for visible-light-driven hydrogen production, which is 5-orders of magnitude higher than that of pristine PFBT polymer under the same catalytic conditions. Detailed kinetics studies suggest that the productive electron transfer quench of the excited state of Pdots by an electron donor is about 40%. More importantly, we also found that the Pdots can tolerate oxygen during catalysis, which is crucial for further application of this material for light-driven water splitting.

  • A Framework for Optimizing Multi-cell NOMA : Delivering Demand with Less Resource
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: GLOBECOM 2017 - 2017 IEEE Global Communications Conference. - : IEEE. - 9781509050192
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) allows multiple users to simultaneously access the same time-frequency resource by using superposition coding and successive interference cancellation (SIC). Thus far, most papers on NOMA have focused on performance gain for one or sometimes two base stations. In this paper, we study multi-cell NOMA and provide a general framework for user clustering and power allocation, taking into account inter-cell interference, for optimizing resource allocation of NOMA in multi-cell networks of arbitrary topology. We provide a series of theoretical analysis, to algorithmically enable optimization approaches. The resulting algorithmic notion is very general. Namely, we prove that for any performance metric that monotonically increases in the cells' resource consumption, we have convergence guarantee for global optimum. We apply the framework with its algorithmic concept to a multi-cell scenario to demonstrate the gain of NOMA in achieving significantly higher efficiency.

  • A Performance Study of Energy Minimization for Interleaved and Localized FDMA
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: 2014 IEEE 19TH INTERNATIONAL WORKSHOP ON COMPUTER AIDED MODELING AND DESIGN OF COMMUNICATION LINKS AND NETWORKS (CAMAD). - : IEEE. - 9781479957255 ; , s. 16-20
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Optimal channel allocation is a key performance engineering aspect in single-carrier frequency-division multiple access (SC-FDMA). It is of significance to consider minimum sum power (Min-Power), subject to meeting specified users demand, since mobile users typically employ battery-powered handsets. In this paper, we prove that Min-Power is polynomial-time solvable for interleaved SC-FDMA (IFDMA). Then we propose a channel allocation algorithm for IFDMA, which is guaranteed to achieve global optimum in polynomial time. We numerically compare the proposed algorithm with optimal localized SC-FDMA (LFDMA) for Min-Power. The results show that LFDMA outperforms IFDMA in the maximal supported user demand. When the user demand can be satisfied in both LFDMA and IFDMA, LFDMA performs slightly better than IFDMA. However MinPower is polynomial-time solvable for IFDMA whereas it is not for LFDMA.

  • Efficient Minimum-Energy Scheduling with Machine-Learning Based Predictions for Multiuser MISO Systems
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: 2018 IEEE International Conference on Communications (ICC). - : IEEE. - 9781538631805 - 9781538631812 ; , s. 1-6
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We address an energy-efficient scheduling problem for practical multiple-input single-output (MISO) systems with stringent execution-time requirements. Optimal user-group scheduling is adopted to enable timely and energy-efficient data transmission, such that all the users' demand can be delivered within a limited time. The high computational complexity in optimal iterative algorithms limits their applications in real-time network operations. In this paper, we rethink the conventional optimization algorithms, and embed machine-learning based predictions in the optimization process, aiming at improving the computational efficiency and meeting the stringent execution-time limits in practice, while retaining competitive energy-saving performance for the MISO system. Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed method, i.e., optimization with machine- learning predictions (OMLP), is able to provide a time-efficient and high-quality solution for the considered scheduling problem. Towards online scheduling in real-time communications, OMLP is of high computational efficiency compared to conventional optimal iterative algorithms. OMLP guarantees the optimality as long as the machine- learning based predictions are accurate.

  • Load Balancing via Joint Transmission in Heterogeneous LTE: Modeling and Computation
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: 2015 IEEE 26TH ANNUAL INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON PERSONAL, INDOOR, AND MOBILE RADIO COMMUNICATIONS (PIMRC). - : IEEE. - 9781467367820 ; , s. 1173-1177
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • As one of the Coordinated Multipoint (CoMP) techniques, Joint Transmission (JT) can improve the overall system performance. In this paper, from the load balancing perspective, we study how the maximum load can be reduced by optimizing JT pattern that characterizes the association between cells and User Equipments (UEs). To give a model of the interference caused by cells with different time-frequency resource usage, we extend a load coupling model, by taking into account JT. In this model, the mutual interference depends on the load of cells coupled in a non-linear system with each other. Under this model, we study a two-cell case and proved that the optimality is achieved in linear time in the number of UEs. After showing the complexity of load balancing in the general network scenario, an iterative algorithm for minimizing the maximum load, named JT-MinMax, is proposed. We evaluate JT-MinMax in a heterogeneous Network (HetNet), though it is not limited to this type of scenarios. Numerical results demonstrate the significant performance improvement of JT-MinMax on min-max cell load, compared to the conventional non-JT solution where each UE is served by the cell with best received transmit signal.

  • Optimizing Power and User Association for Energy Saving in Load-Coupled Cooperative LTE
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: 2016 IEEE INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON COMMUNICATIONS (ICC). - : IEEE. - 9781479966646
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We consider an energy minimization problem for cooperative LTE networks. To reduce energy consumption, we investigate how to jointly optimize the transmit power and the association between cells and user equipments (UEs), by taking into consideration joint transmission (JT), one of the coordinated multipoint (CoMP) techniques. We formulate the optimization problem mathematically. For solving the problem, a dynamic power allocation algorithm that adjusts the transmit power of all cells, and an algorithm for optimizing the cell-UE association, are proposed. The two algorithms are iteratively used in an algorithmic framework to enhance the energy performance. Numerically, the proposed algorithms can lead to lower energy consumption than the optimal energy setting in the non-JT case. In comparison to fixed power allocation in JT, the proposed dynamic power allocation algorithm is able to significantly reduce the energy consumption.

  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Physical Review D. - 2470-0010 .- 2470-0029. ; 95:7
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present an amplitude analysis of the decay D0 → K -π+π+π- based on a data sample of 2.93  fb−1 acquired by the BESIII detector at the ψ(3770) resonance. With a nearly background free sample of about 16000 events, we investigate the substructure of the decay and determine the relative fractions and the phases among the different intermediate processes. Our amplitude model includes the two-body decays D0 → ¯K*0ρ0, D0 → K−a+1(1260) and D0 → K−1(1270)π+, the three-body decays D0 →¯K*0π+π− and D0 → K−π+ρ0, as well as the four-body nonresonant decay D0 → K−π+π+π−. The dominant intermediate process is D0 → K−a+1(1260), accounting for a fit fraction of 54.6%.

  • Ingår i: Physical Review D. - : AMER PHYSICAL SOC. - 2470-0010 .- 2470-0029. ; 95:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Using 448.0 x 10(6) psi(3686) events collected with the BESIII detector, an amplitude analysis is performed for psi(3686) -> gamma chi(c1), chi(c1) ->eta pi(+)pi(-) decays. The most dominant two- body structure observed is a(0)(980)(+/-) pi(-/+); a(0)(980)(+/-) -> eta pi(+/-.) line shape is modeled using a dispersion relation, and a significant nonzero a(0) (980) coupling to the eta'pi channel is measured. We observe chi(c1) -> a(2)(1700)pi production for the first time, with a significance larger than 17 sigma. The production of mesons with exotic quantum numbers, J(PC) = 1(-+), is investigated, and upper limits for the branching fractions chi(c1) -> pi(1)(1400)(+/-)pi(-/+) , chi(c1) -> pi(1)(1600)(+/-)pi(-/+) and chi(c1) -> pi 1(2015)(+/-)pi(-/+) with subsequent pi(1)(X)(+/-) -> eta pi(+/-) decay, are determined.

    • We perform an analysis of the D+ -> K-S(0)pi + (0)(pi) Dalitz plot using a data set of 2.92 fb(-1) of e(+) e(-) collisions at the (3770) mass accumulated by the BESIII experiment, in which 166694 candidate events are selected with a background of 15.1%. The Dalitz plot is found to be well represented by a combination of six quasitwo- body decay channels [k(SP)(0)(+) (1450)(+,) ] plus a small nonresonant component. Using the fit fractions from this analysis, partial branching ratios are updated with higher precision than previous measurements.

  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - 0031-9007 .- 1079-7114. ; 118:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Based on a sample of 1.31 x 10(9) J/Psi events collected with the BESIII detector, an amplitude analysis of the isospin-violating decays eta' -> pi(+)pi(-)pi(0) and eta' -> pi(0)pi(0)pi(0) is performed. A significant P-wave contribution from eta' -> rho(+/-)eta(-/+) is observed for the first time in eta' -> pi(+)pi(-)pi(0). The branching fraction is determined to be B(eta' -> rho(+/-)pi(-/+)) = (7.44 +/- 0.60 +/- 1.26 +/- 1.84) x 10(-4), where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second systematic, and the third model dependent. In addition to the nonresonant S-wave component, there is a significant sigma meson component. The branching fractions of the combined S-wave components are determined to be B(eta' -> pi(+)pi(-)pi(0))(S) = (37.63 +/- 0.77 +/- 2.22 +/- 4.48) x 10(-4) and B(eta' -> pi(0)pi(0)pi(0)) = (35.22 +/- 0.82 +/- 2.54) x 10(-4), respectively. The latter one is consistent with previous BESIII measurements.

  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Physical Review D. - : AMER PHYSICAL SOC. - 2470-0010 .- 2470-0029. ; 98:7
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • An amplitude analysis of the KSKS system produced in radiative J/psi decays is performed using the (1310.6 +/- 7.0) x 10(6) nip decays collected by the BESIII detector. Two approaches are presented. A mass-dependent analysis is performed by parametrizing the KSKS invariant mass spectrum as a sum of Breit-aligner line shapes. Additionally, a mass-independent analysis is performed to extract a piecewise function that describes the dynamics of the KSKS system while making minimal assumptions about the properties and number of poles in the amplitude. The dominant amplitudes in the mass-dependent analysis include the f(0)(1710), f(0)(2200), and f(2)'(1525). The mass-independent results, which are made available as input for further studies, are consistent with those of the mass-dependent analysis and are useful for a systematic study of hadronic interactions. The branching fraction of radiative J/psi decays to KSKS is measured to be (8.1 +/- 0.4) x 10(-4), where the uncertainty is systematic and the statistical uncertainty is negligible.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • An amplitude analysis of the pi(0)pi(0) system produced in radiative J/psi decays is presented. In particular, a piecewise function that describes the dynamics of the pi(0)pi(0) system is determined as a function of M pi(0)pi(0) from an analysis of the (1.311 +/- 0.011) x 10(9) J/psi decays collected by the BESIII detector. The goal of this analysis is to provide a description of the scalar and tensor components of the pi(0)pi(0) system while making minimal assumptions about the properties or number of poles in the amplitude. Such a model-independent description allows one to integrate these results with other related results from complementary reactions in the development of phenomenological models, which can then be used to directly fit experimental data to obtain parameters of interest. The branching fraction of J/psi -> pi(0)pi(0) is determined to be (1.15 +/- 0.05) x 10(-3), where the uncertainty is systematic only and the statistical uncertainty is negligible.

    • Using the data sets taken at center-of-mass energies above 4 GeV by the BESIII detector at the BEPCII storage ring, we search for the reaction e(+)e(-) -> gamma(ISR) X(3872) -> gamma(ISR)pi(+)pi(-) J/psi via the Initial State Radiation technique. The production of a resonance with quantum numbers J(PC) = 1(++) such as the X(3872) via single photon e(+)e(-) annihilation is forbidden, but is allowed by a next-to-leading order box diagram. We do not observe a significant signal of X(3872), and therefore give an upper limit for the electronic width times the branching fraction Gamma B-X(3872)(ee)(X(3872) -> pi(+)pi(-) J/psi) < 0.13 eVat the 90% confidence level. This measurement improves upon existing limits by a factor of 46. Using the same final state, we also measure the electronic width of the psi(3686) to be Gamma(psi)(ee)(3686) ee = 2213 +/- 18(stat) +/- 99(sys) eV.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Using 2.93 fb(-1) of data taken at 3.773 GeV with the BESIII detector operated at the BEPCII collider, we study the semileptonic decays D+ -> (K) over bar (0)e(+)nu(e) and D+ -> pi(0)e(+)nu(e). We measure the absolute decay branching fractions B(D+ -> (K) over bar (0)e(+)nu(e)) = (8.60 +/- 0.06 +/- 0.15) x 10(-2) and B(D+ -> pi(0)e(+)nu(e)) = (3.63 +/- 0.08 +/- 0.05) x 10(-3), where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second systematic. We also measure the differential decay rates and study the form factors of these two decays. With the values of |V-cs| and |V-cd| from Particle Data Group fits assuming Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) unitarity, we obtain the values of the form factors at q(2) = 0, f(+)(K)(0) = 0.725 +/- 0.004 +/- 0.012, and f(+)(pi)(0) = 0.622 +/- 0.012 +/- 0.003. Taking input from recent lattice QCD calculations of these form factors, we determine values of the CKM matrix elements |V-cs| = 0.944 +/- 0.005 +/- 0.015 +/- 0.024 and |V-cd| = 0.210 +/- 0.004 +/- 0.001 +/- 0.009, where the third uncertainties are theoretical.

The product branching fractions of (psi 3686) -> gamma chi(c1), chi(c1) -> gamma J/psi (3686) -> gamma chi(c2), chi(c2) -> gamma J/psi and the branching fractions of chi(c1) -> gamma J/psi and chi(c2) -> gamma J/psi are also presented.

  • Confirmation of a charged charmoniumlike state Z(c)(3885)(-/+) in e(+)e(-) -> pi(+/-) (D(D)over-bar*)(-/+) with double D tag
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Physical Review D. - 1550-7998 .- 1550-2368. ; 92:9
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present a study of the process e(+)e(-) -> pi(+/-) (D (D) over bar*)(-/+) using data samples of 1092 pb(-1) at root s = 4.23 GeV and 826 pb(-1) at root s = 4.26 GeV collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII storage ring. With full reconstruction of the D meson pair and the bachelor pi(+) in the final state, we confirm the existence of the charged structure Z(c) (3885)(-/+) in the (D (D) over bar*)(-/+) system in the two isospin processes e(+)e(-) -> pi(+DD)-D-0*(-) and e(+)e(-) -> pi+D-D*(0). By performing a simultaneous fit, the statistical significance of Zc(3885)(-/+) signal is determined to be greater than 10 sigma, and its pole mass and width are measured to be M-pole = (3881.7 +/- 1.6(stat) +/- 1.6(syst)) MeV/c(2) and Gamma(pole) = (26.6 +/- 2.0(stat) +/- 2.1(syst)) MeV, respectively. The Born cross section times the (D (D) over bar*)(-/+) branching fraction (sigma(e(+)e(-) -> pi(+/-)Z(c)(3885)(-/+)) x Br(Z(c)(3885)(-/+) -> (D (D) over bar*)(-/+) )) is measured to be (141.6 +/- 7.9(stat) +/- 12.3(syst)) pb at root s = 4.23 GeV and (108.4 +/- 6.9(stat) +/- 8.8(syst)) pb at root s = 4.26 GeV. The polar angular distribution of the pi(+) - Z(c)(3885)(-/+) system is consistent with the expectation of a quantum number assignment of J(P) = 1(+) for Z(c)(3885)(-/+).

  • Dark photon search in the mass range between 1.5 and 3.4 GeV/c
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Physics Letters B. - : Elsevier BV. - 0370-2693 .- 1873-2445. ; 774, s. 252-257
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Using a data set of 2.93 fb taken at a center-of-mass energy root s = 3.773 GeV with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider, we perform a search for an extra U(1) gauge boson, also denoted as a dark photon. We examine the initial state radiation reactions e(+)e(-) -> e(+)e(-) gamma(ISR) and e(+)e(-) -> mu(+)mu(-) gamma(ISR) for this search, where the dark photon would appear as an enhancement in the invariant mass distribution of the leptonic pairs. We observe no obvious enhancement in the mass range between 1.5 and 3.4 GeV/c(2) and set a 90% confidence level upper limit on the mixing strength of the dark photon and the Standard Model photon. We obtain a competitive limit in the tested mass range.
