  • Impact of high pressure torsion processing on helium ion irradiation resistance of molybdenum
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Materials Characterization. - : Elsevier BV. - 1044-5803 .- 1873-4189. ; 191, s. 112151-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The microstructure of Mo was significantly refined by high pressure torsion to verify its irradiation tolerance in comparison with its micrograined counterpart. After deformation microhardness increased from 231 Hv0.2 for a microgarined sample to 542 and 558 Hv0.2, respectively after one and five rotations. Concurrently, the grain refinement was observed, as the grain size decreased with the increase of the deformation degree down to 480 and 110 nm, respectively for one and five rotations. Subsequently, deformed Mo and a micrograined one were irradiated by He ions to the dose of 8 x 1016/cm 2 to verify their potential application as fusion mirrors. Irra-diations were followed by reflectivity measurements in the 300-2400 nm range with a dual beam spectrometer. The measurements revealed that the applied dose causes a decrease in total reflectivity of the micrograined sample, whereas the total reflectivity of deformed samples decreases by additional 2.5%. Nanohardness mea-surements, detailed microscopy observations using focused ion beam and scanning transmission electron mi-croscope as well as positron annihilation spectroscopy investigations were performed to elucidate changes in the microstructure and understand the different mechanisms of bubble creation after irradiation in micrograined and high pressure torsion processed samples.

  • Characterization of defect microstructure in MgRE (RE=Ce, Nd) alloys after processing by high-pressure torsion using positron annihilation spectroscopy and a high resolution X-ray diffraction
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Physica B: Condensed Matter. - 0921-4526. ; 663
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Two MgRE (RE = Ce, Nd) alloys with ultrafine-grain (UFG) microstructures were prepared by high-pressure torsion (HPT) at room temperature. The in-depth distribution of defects was characterized by Doppler broadening –variable energy positron annihilation spectroscopy (DB-VEPAS). The characteristic S parameter increases in bulk after HPT processing relative to an as-received sample and shows a relative stability between ½ and 10 turns, which suggests a rise in the open volume defect density. However, a theoretical analysis of the S(E) depth profile reveals an increase in the positron diffusion length from ∼115 nm for the as-received state to ∼207 nm after 10 HPT turns. Almost all the open volume defect consisted of dislocations (positron lifetime of τ = 260 ps). The dislocation density deduced from high-resolution X-ray diffraction in the HPT disc radial direction was reasonably homogeneous (around 4–6 × 1014 m−2).

  • Ion mass dependence of irradiation-induced local creation of ferromagnetism in Fe60Al40 alloys
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B. Condensed Matter and Materials Physics. - 1098-0121 .- 1550-235X. ; 77:17
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Ion irradiation of Fe60Al40 alloys results in the phase transformation from the paramagnetic, chemically ordered B2 phase to the ferromagnetic, chemically disordered A2 phase. The magnetic phase transformation is related to the number of displacements per atom (dpa) during the irradiation. For heavy ions (Ar+, Kr+, and Xe+), a universal curve is observed with a steep increase in the fraction of the ferromagnetic phase that reaches saturation, i.e., a complete phase transformation, at about 0.5 dpa. This proves the purely ballistic nature of the disordering process. If light ions are used (He+ and Ne+), a pronounced deviation from the universal curve is observed. This is attributed to bulk vacancy diffusion from the dilute collision cascades, which leads to a partial recovery of the thermodynamically favored B2 phase. Comparing different noble gas ion irradiation experiments allows us to assess the corresponding counteracting contributions. In addition, the potential to create local ferromagnetic areas embedded in a paramagnetic matrix is demonstrated.
