  • Codex and Code : Aestethcis, Language and Politics in an Age of Digital Media, NORLIT 2009, Stockholm, August 6-9, 2009
  • 2010
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The conference Codex and Code: Aesthetics, Language and Politics in an Age of Digital Media (NorLit 2009)was held at the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) in Stockholm, August 6–9, 2009. The conference was organized by the Nordic Association for Comparative Literature (NorLit); the Department of Culture and Communication, Linköping University; the School of Computer Science and Communication, Royal Institute of Technology (KTH); the Department of Comparative Literature, Stockholm University; the Department of Culture and Communication, Södertörn University College; and the Department of Comparative Literature, Uppsala University.    The aim of the conference was to develop the study of Comparative Literature through Nordic collaboration both in its own discipline and in Modern Language and Cultural studies. As the title for the conference suggests, the principal question for the conference was the challenge that the study of literature encounters in an age of digitalization and globalization. It was our aim to encourage discussion of how literary studies respond to the ongoing changes in media and technology, politics and economy. Many have argued that the Humanities currently are in a state of crisis. We believe that the discipline seldom has found itself in such an interesting and fruitful historical moment. Several of these questions have surfaced during earlier media system changes, in particular during Romanticism and Modernism, which provided the conference with an historical frame. The conference Codex and Code also addressed questions of authenticity and originality, identity and gender, literary genres and reading practices, media and materiality, culture and popular culture, language and history, world literature, work aesthetics, translations, and canon formation.    The conference Codex and Code wanted to stimulate interdisciplinary scholarly research of the literary in a broad sense. The conference was open to scholars in Comparative Literature and in Classical and Modern Languages, Aesthetics, Media and Communication studies, Film and Theatre studies, Philosophy and adjacent disciplines. The conference was organized around a number of thematic sessions in which researchers and scholars presented and discussed papers.    The conference has received generous financial support from the Bank of Sweden Tercentenary Foundation, Magnus Bergwall foundation, Granholms foundation, Linköping University, School of Computer Science and Communication, Royal Institute of Technology, Svenska litteratursällskapet; the Swedish Academy, Swedish Science Council, and Vitterhetsakademien.

  • Designing digitally-driven integrative interdisciplinarity: Professionalism between protocol and judgement
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the Huminfra Conference (HiC 2024), 10-11 January, 2024, Gothenburg, Sweden. - Linköping : Linköping University Electronic Press. - 1650-3686 .- 1650-3740. - 9789180755122
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • While there is a growing discussion of the importance of developing collaborative workflows for interdisciplinary research within DH, there is a lack of blueprints and consideration of specific expertise. This paper conceptualizes the practice of what we tentatively call digitally-driven integrative interdisciplinary project design in order to highlight a certain professional practice for integrating collaboration between technical expertise and traditional HSS researchers when developing research project applications, digital resources, etc. We begin by highlighting the need for protocol for workflow- oriented approaches to integrative interdisciplinary collaboration, but also an embodied expertise in need of being put into focus in discussions of integrative workflows within digital humanities. Then, we argue that judgement is also a crucial but often overlooked part of the professionalism involved. We conclude by discussing how to further develop the conceptualization of interdisciplinary digital project design and the expertise involved.

  • A Multimodal Digital Humanities Study of Terrorism in Swedish Politics: An Interdisciplinary Mixed Methods Project on the Configuration of Terrorism in Parliamentary Debates, Legislation, and Policy Networks 1968–2018
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Intelligent Systems and Applications. Proceedings of the 2021 Intelligent Systems Conference, September 2–3, 2021 / Arai K. (eds). - Cham : Springer. - 2367-3370 .- 2367-3389. - 9783030821951 ; , s. 435-449
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper presents the design of one of Sweden’s largest digital humanities projects, SweTerror, that through an interdisciplinary multi-modal methodological approach develops an extensive speech-to-text digital HSS resource. SweTerror makes a major contribution to the study of terrorism in Sweden through a comprehensive mixed methods study of the political discourse on terrorism since the late 1960s. Drawing on artificial intelligence in the form of state-of-the-art language and speech technology, it systematically analyses all forms of relevant parliamentary utterances. It explores and curates an exhaustive but understudied multi-modal collection of primary sources of central relevance to Swedish democracy: the audio recordings of the Swedish Parliament’s debates. The project studies the framing of terrorism both as policy discourse and enacted politics, examining semantic and emotive components of the parliamentary discourse on terrorism as well as major actors and social networks involved. It covers political responses to a range of terrorism-related issues as well as factors influencing policy-makers’ engagement, including political affiliations and gender. SweTerror also develops an online research portal, featuring the complete research material and searchable audio made readily accessible for further exploration. Long-term, the project establishes a model for combining extraction technologies (speech recognition and analysis) for audiovisual parliamentary data with text mining and HSS interpretive methods and the portal is designed to serve as a prototype for other similar projects.

  • Humanistic AI: Towards a new field of interdisciplinary expertise and research
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the Huminfra Conference (HiC 2024), 10-11 January, 2024, Gothenburg, Sweden. - Linköping : Linköping University Electronic Press. - 1650-3686 .- 1650-3740. - 9789180755122
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Gothenburg Research Infrastructure in Digital Humanities (GRIDH) have participated in projects within various humanities fields that utilise as well as develop research tools and infrastructural resources that incorporate applications of ‘artificial intelligence’ (AI). These applications can include natural language processing, machine learning, computer vision, large language models, image recognition algorithms, classification, clustering, and deep learning. This paper advances the term ‘humanistic AI’ to describe an emergent form of interdisciplinary practice that uses and develops AI-based research applications to answer humanities research questions together with its entangled humanistic reflection. We coin this term to make implicit and visible the epistemological and material particularities of its practice and the new forms of knowledge its affordances make possible. The paper presents GRIDH projects within ‘humanistic AI’ together with its developed AI resources and applications.

  • A Boat Is a Boat Is a Boat…Unless It Is a Horse–Rethinking the Role of Typology
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Open Archaeology. - : Walter de Gruyter GmbH. - 2300-6560. ; 8:1, s. 1218-1230
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Today, it is widely accepted that typology is a biased and inconsistent attempt to classify archaeological material based on the similarity of a predefined set of features. In this respect, machine learning (ML) works similar to typology. ML approaches are often deployed because it is thought that they reduce biases. However, biases are introduced into the process at many points, e.g., feature selection. In a project applying ML to Scandinavian rock art data, it was noticed that the algorithm struggles with classifying certain motifs correctly. This contribution discusses the consistency in applying biases by ML in contrast to the inconsistency of human classification. It is argued that it is necessary to bring machines and humans into a meaningful dialogue attempting to understand why apparent “misclassifications” happen. This is important to inform us about the classification output, our biases, and the rock art data, which are in themself inconsistent, ambiguous, and biased because they are the outcomes of human creativity. The human inconsistency is a necessary component because in rock art not everything that looks similar has a similar meaning.

  • Artificial Intelligence, 3D Documentation, and Rock Art—Approaching and Reflecting on the Automation of Identification and Classification of Rock Art Images
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of archaeological method and theory. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1072-5369 .- 1573-7764. ; 29, s. 188-213
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Rock art carvings, which are best described as petroglyphs, were produced by removing parts of the rock surface to create a negative relief. This tradition was particularly strong during the Nordic Bronze Age (1700–550 BC) in southern Scandinavia with over 20,000 boats and thousands of humans, animals, wagons, etc. This vivid and highly engaging material provides quantitative data of high potential to understand Bronze Age social structures and ideologies. The ability to provide the technically best possible documentation and to automate identification and classification of images would help to take full advantage of the research potential of petroglyphs in southern Scandinavia and elsewhere. We, therefore, attempted to train a model that locates and classifies image objects using faster region-based convolutional neural network (Faster-RCNN) based on data produced by a novel method to improve visualizing the content of 3D documentations. A newly created layer of 3D rock art documentation provides the best data currently available and has reduced inscribed bias compared to older methods. Several models were trained based on input images annotated with bounding boxes produced with different parameters to find the best solution. The data included 4305 individual images in 408 scans of rock art sites. To enhance the models and enrich the training data, we used data augmentation and transfer learning. The successful models perform exceptionally well on boats and circles, as well as with human figures and wheels. This work was an interdisciplinary undertaking which led to important reflections about archaeology, digital humanities, and artificial intelligence. The reflections and the success represented by the trained models open novel avenues for future research on rock art.

  • "A visual sense is born in the fingertips" : towards a digital ekphrasis
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Digital Humanities Quarterly. - : The Alliance of Digital Humanities Organizations. - 1938-4122. ; 7:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this article, the significance of the rhetorical and modern definitions of ekphrasis will be discussed through the lens of digital literature and art. It attempts to reinscribe the body in ekphrastic practice by adding touch to the abstracted visualism of the eye, and emphasize defining features of the ancient usage: orality, immediacy and tactility. What I call the digital ekphrasis with its emphasis on enargeia, its strong connections with the ancient definition, and on the bodily interaction with the work of art, conveys an aesthetic of tactility; digitalis=finger. By tracing and elucidating a historical trajectory that takes the concept of ekphrasis in the ancient culture as a starting point, the intention is not to reject the theories of the late 1900s, but through a reinterpretation of ekphrasis put forward an example of how digital perspectives on classic concepts could challenge or revise more or less taken-for-granted assumptions in the humanities. In this context 'the digital' is not only a phenomenon that could be tied to certain digital objects or used as a digital tool, but as an approach to history, with strong critical potential. The aim is to show that one of the most important features of our digital culture is that it offers new perspectives – not only on current technology – but also on literary, cultural and aesthetic historical practices.

  • Bildseendet föds i fingertopparna : om en ekfras för den digitala tidsåldern
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Ekfrase. - Oslo : Universitetsforlaget. - 1891-5752 .- 1891-5760. ; :1, s. 4-16
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article aims at rethinking the concept of ekphrasis with a special focus on how digital technology shapes, transforms and reconfigures the dynamic relationship between word and image. According to Ruth Webb in her Ekphrasis, Imagination and Persuasion in Ancient Rhetorical Theory and Practice (2009), the ancient and rhetorical practice of ekphrasis and the concept used in modern literary criticism belong to fundamentally different systems. The ancient definition emphasizes enargeia and the impact on the listener. The visual referent is less important. The modern definition of the term, developed for the analysis of written texts, engages with the visual mainly as referent. In this article the significance of the ancient definition of ekphrasis is re-examined through digital art and electronic literature. It is argued that the ekphrasis of the digital age, with its emphasis onenargeia and on the viewer/reader/user-bodily interaction with the work of art convey an aesthetic of tactility. Also discussed is how deeply rooted the notion of ekphrasis is in print based texutality.

  • Evolution = the Action of Reading
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Evolution av Johannes Heldén & Håkan Jonson. - Stockholm : OEI Editör. - 9789185905669
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Evolution is an online artwork-in-progress designed to emulate the texts and music of poet and artist Johannes Heldén, with the ultimate goal of passing "The Imitation Game Test" as proposed by Alan Turing in 1951. With Evolution we aim to examine and dissect the role of the author; when new poetry that resembles the work of the original author is created or presented through an algorithm, is it possible to make the distinction between "author" and "programmer"? And is it even relevant? When the work of the algorithm is extrapolated to the point where the original author becomes redundant, how does this affect copyright, legacy, future writings, etc? The purpose of the work is not to deromanticize or deconstruct the role of the author, but is rather the ongoing exploration itself. Where will it take us, and perhaps more importantly, what will happen along the way? The release of Evolution will mark the end of Johannes Heldén writing poetry books. He has, in a sense, been replaced. THE APPLICATION The application analyzes a database of all the published text- and soundworks by the artist and generates a continuously evolving poem that simulates Heldén’s style: in vocabulary, the spacing in-between words, syntax. The audio track is generated by an algorithm that layers the source material of the artist’s compositions in differing randomized lengths, fades and pitch; creating an evolving ambient drone.
