  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Political Studies. - : Wiley. - 0080-6757 .- 1467-9477. ; 40:2, s. 207-227
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The belief that people are generally fair and trustworthy has generated plenty of scholarly attention in recent decades, particularly in the Scandinavian countries, which are often known for high levels of social trust. This article draws attention to the current discussion in the literature on whether social trust is a stable cultural trait marked by persistence or is based on experiences and subject to change throughout life. Based on unique longitudinal data from five different cohorts of young people in Sweden, ranging in age from 13 to 28 years, this article provides an empirical contribution on how social trust develops over time. The results show that there is a greater degree of instability in social trust between 13 and 15 years of age than in other age groups, and that social trust appears to stabilize with age. Findings also indicate that there are substantial inter-individual differences in social trust among young people within the same age group, both in initial levels and in the rates of change over time. The article concludes that although social trust is relatively stable it tends to crystallize in early adulthood, highlighting the relevance of the impressionable-years hypothesis.

  • A new fixation strategy for addressable nano-network building blocks
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Chemical Communications. - 1364-548X .- 1359-7345. ; 46:21, s. 3714-3716
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Rapid controlled self-assembly makes DNA ideal for building nanostructures. A problem using hybridized intermediates in hierarchic assembly is their thermodynamic lability. We demonstrate a click-fixation technology by which robust hexagonal DNA modules can be made. This principle is applicable to a wide variety of DNA nanoconstructs.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The inherent self-assembly properties of DNA make it ideal in nanotechnology. We present a fully addressable DNA nanostructure with the smallest possible unit cell, a hexagon with a side-length of only 3.4 nm.(2,3) Using novel three-way oligonucleotides, where each side has a unique double-stranded DNA sequence that can be assigned a specific address, we will build a non-repetitive two-dimensional grid.

  • Bottom-up Fabrication of Functional DNA Nanostructures
  • 2012
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This thesis demonstrates bottom-up fabrication of a fully addressable non-repetitive network on the nanometer scale, assembled by synthetic DNA molecules. Each side constitutes a unique sequence of 10 bases, i.e. 3.4 nm in length, and can be considered the smallest practical unit of DNA in a nanotechnological context. Working with units of this length scale ensures a system fit for non-mundane molecular nanotechnology. The thesis features a progressive growth of the nanostructure, from the formation of the single-ringed hexagonal unit-cell to an asymmetric four-ring network of 17 nodes. Each structure is formed in a one-step self-assembly reaction.Alongside construction of the DNA-based nanostructural template, the thesis also illustrates three different aspects of functionalization. Firstly, a fixation strategy infusing stability in the delicate network by chemical ligation. The click chemistry based strategy will pave the way for modular build-up of larger nanostructures. Results show that multiple site-specific click reactions can perform simultaneously and independently of each other on a hybridized DNA template. Fixated modules are resistant to denaturing agent and can be freeze-dried. The second important aspect is incorporation of these DNA nanoconstructs onto lipid bilayers, for development of soft-surface nanotechnology. This creates controllable new interfaces in an aspiration towards membrane-integrated applications, e.g. mimicking a photosynthetic reaction centre. This thesis features two different molecular anchors: a multi-functional porphyrin moiety and a more universal lipid anchor. Both anchors are shown to align a DNA nanostructure with the membrane surface, a conformational arrangement that also depends on position of anchoring points. The last theme of this thesis is triplex recognition as a method for site-specific functionalization of preformed DNA nanostructures. The specific function of energy transfer is demonstrated in a simple photonic device, which can be switched ON and OFF by slight adjustment of pH.This DNA-based nanoscopic system is envisioned as a platform for high-precision control over molecular processes towards nanotechnological applications. It is part of an ambition in molecular nanoscience to fabricate systems from the bottom-up, based on principles of self-assembly and with functional complexity on levels not achievable by a conventional top-down perspective to nanoscience. The great leap of molecular nanoscience stems from inspiration of biological systems. New advancement in technological progress is possible by harvesting benefits of Darwinian evolution.

  • Controlling and Monitoring Orientation of DNA Nanoconstructs on Lipid Surfaces
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Langmuir. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 1520-5827 .- 0743-7463. ; 29:1, s. 285-293
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Its extraordinary self-assembly property, with potential to form nonperiodic structures with unique addressability, makes DNA ideal for fabrication of advanced nanostructures. We here demonstrate the controllable tethering of a hexagonal DNA nanostructure in two distinct orientations at the lipid bilayer of a liposome functioning as a soft-matter support. With polarized light (linear dichroism) applied to the flow-aligned liposomes, we show that the construct is preferentially in a parallel alignment with the lipid surface when two anchors are attached while with one anchor only a perpendicular orientation is observed.

  • Fixation of Functionalized DNA Nanostructures
  • 2009
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This thesis features results from two different studies on a fully addressable non-repetitive network on the nanometre scale, assembled by synthetic DNA molecules. A bio-inspired molecular approach, based on principles of self-assembly, has brought about a paradigm shift in nanoscience, from a top-down to a bottom-up perspective. The studied system in this thesis is a two-dimensional assembly of hexagonal unit cells with the potential of controlling diverse processes, such as energy transfer or chemical synthesis, at the highest precision. The first study proves successful formation of the first generation of this network, a fused bihexagonal structure. The study also illustrates a method of addressing a specific location in the system using triplex recognition. Furthermore, the triplex recognition functions in principle as an information storage device. The second study introduces a fixation strategy based on the principles of click chemistry. By covalently cross-linking a DNA hexagon the stability is markedly increased, creating a module that may readily be adapted as a building block for larger structures.

  • The role of school climate in explaining changes in social trust over time
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Educational Research. - : Taylor & Francis. - 0031-3831 .- 1470-1170. ; 63:5, s. 712-724
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • School is often ranked highly among social agents that are central to the development of various citizenship values and norms in younger members of society. In this paper, we examined the impact of two dimensions of school climate on changes in social trust among adolescents over time, namely relationships and safety. Using a series of latent change models on 3-wave panel data concerning roughly 850 Swedish adolescents aged 13 to 28 years, we found that experiences of victimization in school mattered most in predicting changes in social trust across 3 time points, when relevant demographic factors and other aspects of the school climate were controlled. In particular, social trust declined most among adolescents who experienced more victimization at school.

  • Time matters : Civic engagement and the development of anti-immigrant attitudes among adolescents
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Acta Politica. - : Palgrave Macmillan. - 0001-6810 .- 1741-1416. ; 57, s. 597-620
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A recurring claim in the literature is that civic engagement in voluntary associations is crucial for the formation of a variety of interpersonal attitudes, such as social trust, tolerance, and intolerance. In this article, we study the role of membership in voluntary associations and volunteer work in the development of anti-immigrant attitudes among adolescents. Using a four-wave longitudinal design with a target sample comprising approximately 2000 adolescents between the ages of 13 and 16 at the first measurement occasion, this study contributes to previous research by analysing the impact on anti-immigrant attitudes of different dimensions of membership in voluntary associations and volunteer work. The results showed that membership in voluntary associations and volunteer work over several years serve to decrease anti-immigrant attitudes among adolescents over time. In addition, volunteering over several years seems to have a somewhat stronger impact on anti-immigrant attitudes than do various aspects of membership in associations. Our study also shows that anti-immigrant attitudes become more firmly established with age and that membership in only certain types of voluntary associations relates to attitudes toward immigrants. In sum, this study contributes to previous research focusing on the role of civic engagement in the development of interpersonal attitudes.
