  • Robust estimation of bacterial cell count from optical density
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Communications Biology. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2399-3642. ; 3:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Optical density (OD) is widely used to estimate the density of cells in liquid culture, but cannot be compared between instruments without a standardized calibration protocol and is challenging to relate to actual cell count. We address this with an interlaboratory study comparing three simple, low-cost, and highly accessible OD calibration protocols across 244 laboratories, applied to eight strains of constitutive GFP-expressing E. coli. Based on our results, we recommend calibrating OD to estimated cell count using serial dilution of silica microspheres, which produces highly precise calibration (95.5% of residuals <1.2-fold), is easily assessed for quality control, also assesses instrument effective linear range, and can be combined with fluorescence calibration to obtain units of Molecules of Equivalent Fluorescein (MEFL) per cell, allowing direct comparison and data fusion with flow cytometry measurements: in our study, fluorescence per cell measurements showed only a 1.07-fold mean difference between plate reader and flow cytometry data.

  • Clinical characteristics and phylogenetic analysis of human enteric adenovirus type 41 (HAdV-F41) from children with gastroenteritis during SARS-CoV-2 pandemic
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Infection, Genetics and Evolution. - : Elsevier. - 1567-1348 .- 1567-7257. ; 123
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Human adenovirus type 41 (HAdV-F41) usually causes pediatrics gastroenteritis. However, it was reported to be associated with the outbreaks of severe acute hepatitis of unknown aetiology (SAHUA) in pediatrics during COVID-19 pandemic. In this study, we investigated the prevalence of enteric HAdV-F41 in 37,920 paediatric gastroenteritis cases from 2017 to 2022 in Guangzhou, China. All children presented were tested negative for SARS-CoV-2 during the “zero-COVID” period. The main clinical symptom of the children was diarrhea (96.5%). No fatalities nor liver abnormal symptoms was found. In 2021, one year since the pandemic of COVID-19, the prevalence of HAdV-F41 abruptly increased from 3.71% to 8.64% (P < 0.001). All of HAdV-F41 circulating worldwide were classified into eight different subtypes (G1-G8) based on the phylogenetic clustering permutation of the four capsid genes of HAdV-F41. G3 was the predominant subtype (56.2%; 77/137). CRV5 isolates from SAHUA cases belong to this subtype, in which N312D and H335D mutations in the short fiber knob were identified in both Guangzhou and CRV5 isolates, presumably changing the virus tropism by directly interacting with the heparin sulfate (HS) receptor. Additionally, a novel recombinant G6 subtype, which is unique and only circulating in China was first identified in this study. This is the first study highlighting the prevalence of HAdV-F41 in paediatric cases of gastroenteritis during COVID-19 pandemic in China. The clinical and viral evolution finding of HAdV-F41 provide insight into the clinical characteristics of children with HAdV-F41 infections as well as the uncertain role of HAdV-F41 in the cause of SAHUA.

  • Ingår i: Proceedings 2015 IEEE International Conference on Computer Vision Workshops ICCVW 2015. - : IEEE. - 9780769557205 ; , s. 564-586
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Visual Object Tracking challenge 2015, VOT2015, aims at comparing short-term single-object visual trackers that do not apply pre-learned models of object appearance. Results of 62 trackers are presented. The number of tested trackers makes VOT 2015 the largest benchmark on short-term tracking to date. For each participating tracker, a short description is provided in the appendix. Features of the VOT2015 challenge that go beyond its VOT2014 predecessor are: (i) a new VOT2015 dataset twice as large as in VOT2014 with full annotation of targets by rotated bounding boxes and per-frame attribute, (ii) extensions of the VOT2014 evaluation methodology by introduction of a new performance measure. The dataset, the evaluation kit as well as the results are publicly available at the challenge website(1).

  • Composition dependent elastic modulus and phase stability of Ni2MnGa based ferromagnetic shape memory alloys
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: SCI CHINA TECHNOL SC. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1674-7321 .- 1869-1900. ; 55:2, s. 295-305
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Ni2MnGa based ferromagnetic alloys are ideal candidates for applications such as actuators, magnetic refrigerators or magnetostrictive transducers due to their attractive properties such as magnetic field induced shape memory effect and large magnetocaloric effect. The properties of these alloys (e.g., the martensitic transformation temperature T (M) ) sensitively depend on the composition. Understanding the composition dependence of these properties so as to design the alloy as desired is one of the main research topics in this area. In recent years, we have investigated the composition dependent elastic modulus and phase stability of Ni2MnGa-based alloys by using a first-principles method, in hope of clarifying their connection to the properties of these alloys. In this article, we review the main results of our investigations. We show that the tetragonal shear modulus C' is a better predictor of the composition dependent T (M) than the number of valence electrons per atom (e/a) since the general T (M) similar to C' correlation works for some of the alloys for which the T (M) similar to e/a correlation fails, although there exist several cases for which both the general T (M) similar to C' and T (M)similar to e/a correlations break down. Employing the experimentally determined modulation function, the complex 5-layer modulated (5M) structure of the martensite of Ni2MnGa and the Al-doping effect on it are studied. We find that the shuffle and shear of the 5M structure are linearly coupled. The relative stability of the austenite and the martensites is examined by comparing their total energies. The non-modulated martensite beta aEuro(3)aEuro(2) with the tetragonality of the unit cell c/a > 1 is shown to be globally stable whereas the 5M martensite with c/a < 1 is metastable. The critical Al atomic fraction over which the martensitic transformation between the 5M martensite and austenite cannot occur is predicted to be 0.26, in reasonable agreement with experimental findings.

  • Adjusting Competitive Reaction to Control Nucleation and Growth of MnO2 for a High-Stress Output Electrochemical Actuator
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: ACS APPLIED ELECTRONIC MATERIALS. - : AMER CHEMICAL SOC. - 2637-6113. ; 5:9, s. 4836-4845
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Manganese dioxide (MnO2) with biocompatibility has promising applications in low-voltage electrochemical actuators of implantable medical devices, which can convert electrical energy to mechanical motion. However, the unsatisfactory actuation strain restricts the generation of a larger output stress of MnO2 for practical application. Herein, a competitive reaction-driven-MnO2 (CRD-MnO2) nanorod network was fabricated on a nickel (Ni) thin-film substrate by adjusting the component molar ratios. We find that the competitive reaction between 3,4-ethylene-dioxythiophene (EDOT) polymerization and oxidation of Mn2+ controls the nucleation and growth behavior of MnO2. The variation in the electron environment, newly generated oxygen vacancies, and a higher content of structural water effectively improve the electroactivity of MnO2 and simultaneously cause more serious Jahn-Teller (JT) distortion of the crystal octahedrons. Thus, an excellent output performance simultaneously having a much higher actuating strain of 8.3% and an actuation stress of 390.1 MPa is generated during a redox reaction between Mn4+ and Mn3+ under 0-1 V. Moreover, the CRD-MnO2/Ni composite actuating films assembled on a 3D-printed resin model of a human hand with separated finger joints can perform smooth grasping and releasing actions, demonstrating a huge potential for in vitro rehabilitation exercises and implantability for people with finger dyskinesia. This work provides a strategy for actuator material fabrication by controlling a nucleation and growth process by adjusting a competitive reaction.

  • Apolipoprotein M increases the expression of Vitamin D receptor mRNA in colorectal cancer cells detected with duplex fluorescence reverse transcription-quantitative polymerase chain reaction
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Molecular Medicine Reports. - : Spandidos Publications. - 1791-2997 .- 1791-3004. ; 16:2, s. 1167-1172
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Apolipoprotein M (ApoM) and the Vitamin D receptor (VDR) are apolipoproteins predominantly presenting in high-density lipoprotein (HDL) and a karyophilic protein belonging to the steroid-thyroid receptor superfamily, respectively. Previous studies have demonstrated that ApoM and VDR are associated with cholesterol metabolism, immune and colorectal cancer regulation. In order to investigate whether ApoM affected the expression of VDR in colorectal cancer cells, a single-tube duplex fluorescence reverse transcription-quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) system was developed to simultaneously detect the mRNA levels of VDR and GAPDH in HT-29 cells overexpressing ApoM. The results demonstrated that the amplification products were confirmed as the specific fragment of VDR/GAPDH using the DNA sequencing instrument. The sensitivity, linear range, correlation coefficient, amplification efficiency, intra-assay and inter-assay coefficients of variation were 40 copies/μl, 4.00×101-4.00×105 copies/μl, 0.999, 92.42%, 0.09-0.34% and 0.32-0.65% for VDR, and 40 copies/μl, 400×101-4.00×105 copies/μl, 0.999, 98.07%, 0.19-0.43% and 0.40-0.75% for GAPDH, respectively. The results indicated that the expression of VDR mRNA was significantly higher in HT-29 cells overexpressing ApoM, compared with the negative control group (P<0.05). In conclusion, the current study successfully developed the single-tube duplex RT-qPCR to simultaneously detect VDR and GAPDH expression in colorectal cancer cells. The methodology results demonstrated that the duplex RT-qPCR system with high sensitivity and specificity could ensure the objectivity and credibility of the detection. The present study confirmed that ApoM significantly increased the expression of VDR in HT-29 cells. In addition, it was hypothesized that ApoM may be involved in antineoplastic activity via the upregulation of VDR expression, which may provide novel directions for the investigation of ApoM in cancer.

  • Increased apolipoprotein M induced by lack of scavenger receptor BI is not activated via HDL-mediated cholesterol uptake in hepatocytes
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Lipids in Health and Disease. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1476-511X. ; 17:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Scavenger receptor BI (SR-BI) is a classic high-density lipoprotein (HDL) receptor, which mediates selective lipid uptake from HDL cholesterol esters (HDL-C). Apolipoprotein M (ApoM), as a component of HDL particles, could influence preβ-HDL formation and cholesterol efflux. The aim of this study was to determine whether SR-BI deficiency influenced the expression of ApoM. Methods: Blood samples and liver tissues were collected from SR-BI gene knockout mice, and serum lipid parameters, including total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), high and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C and LDL-C) and ApoM were measured. Hepatic ApoM and ApoAI mRNA levels were also determined. In addition, BLT-1, an inhibitor of SR-BI, was added to HepG2 cells cultured with cholesterol and HDL, under serum or serum-free conditions. The mRNA and protein expression levels of ApoM were detected by RT-PCR and western blot. Results: We found that increased serum ApoM protein levels corresponded with high hepatic ApoM mRNA levels in both male and female SR-BI-/- mice. Besides, serum TC and HDL-C were also significantly increased. Treatment of HepG2 hepatoma cells with SR-BI specific inhibitor, BLT-1, could up-regulate ApoM expression in serum-containing medium but not in serum-free medium, even in the presence of HDL-C and cholesterol. Conclusions: Results suggested that SR-BI deficiency promoted ApoM expression, but the increased ApoM might be independent from HDL-mediated cholesterol uptake in hepatocytes.

  • Ingår i: Small. - : John Wiley & Sons. - 1613-6810 .- 1613-6829. ; 17:5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • 2D PbS nanoplatelets (NPLs) form an emerging class of photoactive materials and have been proposed as robust materials for high-performance optoelectronic devices. However, the main drawback of PbS NPLs is the large lateral size, which inhibits their further investigations and practical applications. In this work, ultra-small 2D PbS NPLs with uniform lateral size (11.2 +/- 1.7 nm) and thickness (3.7 +/- 0.9 nm, approximate to 6 layers) have been successfully fabricated by a facile liquid-phase exfoliation approach. Their transient optical response and photo-response behavior are evaluated by femtosecond-resolved transient absorption and photo-electrochemical (PEC) measurements. It is shown that the NPLs-based photodetectors (PDs) exhibit excellent photo-response performance from UV to the visible range, showing extremely high photo-responsivity (27.81 mA W-1) and remarkable detectivity (3.96 x 10(10) Jones), which are figures of merit outperforming currently reported PEC-type PDs. The outstanding properties are further analyzed based on the results of first-principle calculations, including electronic band structure and free energies for the oxygen evolution reaction process. This work highlights promising applications of ultra-small 2D PbS NPLs with the potential for breakthrough developments also in other fields of optoelectronic devices.

  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Horticulture Research. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 2052-7276 .- 2662-6810. ; 8:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Polyploidization plays a key role in plant evolution, but the forces driving the fate of homoeologs in polyploid genomes, i.e., paralogs resulting from a whole-genome duplication (WGD) event, remain to be elucidated. Here, we present a chromosome-scale genome assembly of tetraploid scarlet sage (Salvia splendens), one of the most diverse ornamental plants. We found evidence for three WGD events following an older WGD event shared by most eudicots (the γ event). A comprehensive, spatiotemporal, genome-wide analysis of homoeologs from the most recent WGD unveiled expression asymmetries, which could be associated with genomic rearrangements, transposable element proximity discrepancies, coding sequence variation, selection pressure, and transcription factor binding site differences. The observed differences between homoeologs may reflect the first step toward sub- and/or neofunctionalization. This assembly provides a powerful tool for understanding WGD and gene and genome evolution and is useful in developing functional genomics and genetic engineering strategies for scarlet sage and other Lamiaceae species.

  • Increased plasma apoM levels in the patients suffered from hepatocellular carcinoma and other chronic liver diseases
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Lipids in Health and Disease. - 1476-511X. ; 7
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objective: To determine plasma apolipoprotein M ( apoM) levels and other lipid profiles in hepatocellular carcinoma ( HCC) patients compared to other chronic liver diseases and normal subjects. Materials and methods: 36 HCC, 68 chronic hepatitis, 29 liver cirrhosis patients and 64 normal controls were subjected in the present study. Serum lipids, lipoproteins, apolipoprotein AI ( apoAI) and apoB were determined by the conventional methods. Plasma apoM levels were semiquantitatively determined by both dot- blotting and western blotting analysis. Results: Serum levels of triglycerides ( TG), HDL- cholesterol, apoAI and lipoprotein ( a) ( Lp( a)) were significantly lower in the HCC patients than in the normal subjects, whereas there were no obvious differences on serum total cholesterol, LDL- cholesterol and apoB between HCC patients and normal subjects. However, plasma apoM levels in HCC patients were significantly increased than those in the normal subjects, but lower than those in the chronic hepatitis and cirrhosis patients. Conclusion: It is concluded that serum TG, apoAI, HDL- C and Lp( a) were significantly decreased in HCC patients than in controls, whereas plasma apoM levels were significantly increased in the HCC patients. Decreased serum TG, apoAI, HDL- C and Lp( a) may reflect the liver damage in HCC patients, whereas the clinical significance of increased plasma apoM levels in relation to HCC is not clear.

  • SARS-CoV-2 infection causes immunodeficiency in recovered patients by downregulating CD19 expression in B cells via enhancing B-cell metabolism
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Signal transduction and targeted therapy. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2059-3635. ; 6:1, s. 345-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The SARS-CoV-2 infection causes severe immune disruption. However, it is unclear if disrupted immune regulation still exists and pertains in recovered COVID-19 patients. In our study, we have characterized the immune phenotype of B cells from 15 recovered COVID-19 patients, and found that healthy controls and recovered patients had similar B-cell populations before and after BCR stimulation, but the frequencies of PBC in patients were significantly increased when compared to healthy controls before stimulation. However, the percentage of unswitched memory B cells was decreased in recovered patients but not changed in healthy controls upon BCR stimulation. Interestingly, we found that CD19 expression was significantly reduced in almost all the B-cell subsets in recovered patients. Moreover, the BCR signaling and early B-cell response were disrupted upon BCR stimulation. Mechanistically, we found that the reduced CD19 expression was caused by the dysregulation of cell metabolism. In conclusion, we found that SARS-CoV-2 infection causes immunodeficiency in recovered patients by downregulating CD19 expression in B cells via enhancing B-cell metabolism, which may provide a new intervention target to cure COVID-19.

  • Ingår i: Applied Physics Letters. - : AIP Publishing. - 0003-6951 .- 1077-3118. ; 101:8, s. 082411-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present herein a soft x-ray spectroscopy study on the electronic and magnetic properties of Mg1-xFexOy thin films. A distinct shoulder feature on the absorption edge reflecting the unoccupied oxygen 2p states is evident in the intrinsic thin films, which diminishes upon Fe doping, while a pre-edge absorption feature (reflecting the O 2p-Fe 3d acceptor state) evolves with the same. Our findings demonstrate the reduction in the intrinsic holes as a result of charge-transfer hole doping. All the thin films display room-temperature ferromagnetism, and the saturation magnetization is found to increase from ca. 0.70 -> 4.34 emu/cm(3) on 7 at. % Fe doping.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Understanding the nature and characteristics of the intrinsic defects and impurities in the dielectric barrier separating the ferromagnetic electrodes in a magnetic tunneling junction is of great importance for understanding the often observed 'barrier-breakdown' therein. In this connection, we present herein systematic experimental (SQUID and synchrotron-radiation-based x-ray absorption spectroscopy) and computational studies on the electronic and magnetic properties of Mg1-xFexO thin films. Our studies reveal: (i) defect aggregates comprised of basic and trimer units (Fe impurity coupled to 1 or 2 Mg vacancies) and (ii) existence of two competing magnetic orders, defect- and dopant-induced, with spin densities aligning anti-parallel if the trimer is present in the oxide matrix. These findings open up new avenues for designing tunneling barriers with high endurance and tunneling effect upon tuning the concentration/distribution of the two magnetic orders.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The composition dependent lattice parameter, phase stability, elastic moduli, and magnetic transition temperature of the Ni2+xMn1-xGa shape-memory alloys are studied by using the first-principles exact muffin-tin orbital method in combination with the coherent potential approximation. The lattice parameter and tetragonal shear modulus of the cubic L-21 austenite phase decreases linearly with increasing concentration x of excess Ni atoms. The heats of formation of both cubic L-21 and tetragonal beta''' phases and their difference increase with x, indicating decreasing stability of the cubic and tetragonal phases and increasing driving force for the L-21 to beta''' martensitic transition. Investigating the electronic density of states, we find that the Ni-induced decreasing phase stability can mainly be ascribed to the weakening of the covalent bonding between minority spin states of Ni and Ga. Using the computed parameters, the composition dependence of the martensitic transition temperature is discussed. The theoretical Curie temperature, estimated from the Heisenberg model in combination with the mean-field approximation, is larger for the beta''' phase than for the L-21 phase. For both phases, the Curie temperature decreases nearly linearly with increasing x.

  • Ingår i: Physical Review B. Condensed Matter and Materials Physics. - 1098-0121 .- 1550-235X. ; 86:21, s. 214205-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The composition-dependent lattice parameters, crystal structure, elastic properties, magnetic moment, and electronic structure of Ni2Mn1+xIn1-x (0 <= x <= 0.6) are studied by using first-principles calculations. It is shown that the martensitic phase transition (MPT) from cubic L2(1) to tetragonal L1(0) accompanies theMn(Mn)-Mn-In ferromagnetic (FM) to antiferromagnetic (AFM) transition, at around the critical composition x = 0.32, in agreement with the experimental measurement. The Mn-In atomic disorder leads to decreasing stability of the martensite relative to the austenite, which depresses the MPT. The shear elastic constant C' of the parent phase first decreases slightly with increasing x and then remains almost unchanged above x = 0.32, indicating C' alone cannot account for the increase of the MPT temperature with x. The total magnetic moments for the L2(1) phase are in good agreement with those determined by experiments, whereas for the L1(0) phase they are slightly larger than the experimental data due to the possibleMn-In atomic disorder in the sample. The calculated density of states demonstrate that the covalent bonding between the minority spin states of Ni and In plays an important role in both the magnetic and structural stability.

    • The site preference and elastic properties of Fe-, Co-, and Cu-doped Ni(2)MnGa alloys are investigated by using the first-principles exact muffin-tin orbital method in combination with coherent-potential approximation. It is shown that Fe atom prefers to occupy the Mn and Ni sublattices even in Ga-deficient alloys; Co has strong tendency to occupy the Ni sublattice in all types of alloys; Cu atoms always occupy the sublattice of the host elements in deficiency. For most of the alloys with stable site occupations, both the electron density n and the shear modulus C' can be considered as predictors of the composition dependence of the martensitic transition temperature T(M) of the alloys. The physics underlying the composition-dependent C' are discussed based on the calculated density of states.

  • Ingår i: Physical Review B. Condensed Matter and Materials Physics. - 1098-0121 .- 1550-235X. ; 84:17, s. 174117-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The temperature dependence of the elastic properties of Ni(2+x)Mn(1-x)Ga and Ni(2)Mn(Ga(1-x)Al(x)) (x = 0.0, 0.1, and 0.2) random alloys are investigated by using the first-principles exact muffin-tin orbitals method. At 0 K, the calculated equilibrium parameters in both cubic L2(1) and nonmodulated tetragonal beta'''-Ni(2)MnGa are in good agreement with the available experimental data and other theoretical results. Separating the thermal effects into single electron excitation, volume expansion, phonon smearing, and magnetic terms, we find that phonon smearing gives the dominating positive tetragonal elastic constant (C') versus temperature (T) slope for the cubic phase. For Ni(2+x)Mn(1-x)Ga, the competition between the negative alloying effect (partial derivative C'/partial derivative x < 0) and the positive temperature effect (partial derivative C'/partial derivative T > 0) leads to nearly constant C'[x, T(M)(x)] at the martensitic transition temperature T(M)(x). For Ni(2)Mn(Ga(1-x)Al(x)), where both partial derivative C'/partial derivative x and partial derivative C'/partial derivative T are positive, however, due to the significantly decrease of T(M)(x), the critical C'[x, T(M)(x)] slightly decreases with Al doping. Furthermore, it is demonstrated that both the composition and the temperature dependence of C' are indispensable to get a reasonable theoretical T(M)(x).

  • Late Ordovician lingulid brachiopods from the Pingliang Formation (Shaanxi Province, North China) : Morphological and ecological implications

  • Ingår i: Journal of Asian Earth Sciences. - : Elsevier. - 1367-9120 .- 1878-5786. ; 263
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Brachiopods first appeared in the early Cambrian and persist till present. They are one of the main lineages of marine invertebrates that diversified throughout the Paleozoic and reached their maximum diversity of high-rank taxonomy during the Ordovician. During this time interval, brachiopods were mainly dominated by the articulated Orthida and Strophomenida, which represent major components of the Paleozoic Evolutionary Fauna; however, the inarticulated lingulid brachiopods (Order Lingulida) were comparatively less abundant and received less attention during this time period. Here, we report a new record of the lingulid brachiopod Anomaloglossa porca from the Upper Ordovician (Sandbian) Pingliang Formation of the Xilinggou Section, Shaanxi Province, North China. Collected specimens are preserved as calcium phosphatic shells with highly mineralization which preserve detailed morphology and shell ornamentation of both ventral and dorsal valves. The new occurrence of A. porca extends its paleogeographic distribution from Gondwana and Tarim to North China Platform. Moreover, comprehensive geometric morphometric analysis of A. porca is performed and the results indicate that both the shell shape and pseudointerarea are very close to the recent infaunal lingulids. If interpreted correctly, the fossils represent the first example of infaunal lifestyles achieved by Ordovician lingulids from North China, exhibiting the ecological complexities of the Late Ordovician benthos composed of epibenthos and infaunas as well.

    • In this paper, the five-layer modulated (5M) martensitic structures of Ni(2)Mn(Al(x)Ga(1-x)), with x = 0, 0.1 and 0.2, are investigated by the use of the exact muffin-tin orbital method in combination with the coherent potential approximation. The 5M martensite is modeled by varying c/a (shear) and wave-like displacements of the atoms on (1 1 0) plane (shuffle) scaled by eta according to Martynov and Kokorin (J. Phys. III 2, 739 (1992)). For Ni(2)MnGa, we obtain 5M martensite with equilibrium c/a of 0.92 and eta of 0.08, in reasonable agreement with the experiment results (0.94 and 0.06, respectively). c/a and eta are linearly coupled to each other. Al-doping increases c/a and decreases eta, but the linear c/a similar to eta coupling remains. Comparing the total energies of the 5M martensite and L2(1) austenite, we find that the martensite is more stable than the austenite. Al-doping increases the relative stability of the austenite and finally becomes energetically degenerated with the 5M martensite at an Al atomic fraction (x) of about 0.26. The relative phase stability is analyzed based on the calculated density of states. The calculated total magnetic moments mu(0) as a function of c/a exhibit a maximum around the equilibrium c/a. Al-doping reduces mu(0)

  • Magnetic properties and temperature-dependent half-metallicity of Co2Mn(Ga(1-x)Z(x)) (Z = Si, Ge, Sn) from first-principles calculation

    • Using the first-principles exact muffin-tin orbitals method in combination with the coherent potential approximation, we investigated the magnetic properties, exchange interactions, and temperature-dependent half-metallicity of the Co2Mn(Ga(1-x)Z(x)) (Z = Si, Ge, Sn) alloys. The total magnetic moment follows perfectly a previously proposed Slater-Pauling relation, i.e., mu(0) = N-t - 24, with N-t being the number of valence electrons. The Co-Mn and Co1-Co2 (inter-sublattice) interactions are dominated by direct exchange, whereas the Co1-Co1 (intra-sublattice) interaction is characterized by superexchange. The Mn-Mn exchange interaction in Co2MnGa is of long-ranged RKKY-type. However, the Mn-Mn exchange interactions in Co(2)MnZ are relatively localized and can be attributed to superexchange. The Co-Mn, Co1-Co2 and Co1-Co1 total exchange interactions increase with x, whereas the Mn-Mn total exchange interactions show convex behavior. The calculated Curie temperature (T-C) increases with x. The ability of Z to enhance T-C follows the sequence of Si > Ge > Sn, in agreement with the experimental findings. The temperature dependence of the spin polarization at the Fermi level [P(T)] is investigated based on the disordered local moment model. P(T) drops abruptly at temperatures much lower than T-C. At temperatures higher than 200 K, the composition with higher TC generally corresponds to larger P(T).

  • Phase stability of Ni-2(Mn1-xFex)Ga : A first-principles study

    • Ni-2(Mn1-xFex)Ga ferromagnetic shape memory alloy shows unusual composition-dependent martensitic transformation temperature (T-M), namely, T-M decreases with increasing e/a ratio. In hope of understanding this unusual behavior, we investigated the composition dependence of the heat of formation (H-f) and shear elastic modulus (C') of the cubic austenite as well as the stability of the five-layer modulated (5M) tetragonal martensite relative to the austenite, using first-principles exact muffin-tin orbital method in combination with coherent potential approximation. Our calculations demonstrated that H-f of the austenite increases with the Fe content x. C' increases slightly with x up to 0.05 but decreases thereafter. The composition dependence of both H-f and C' cannot fully account for the trend of T-M against x although such correlations have been proposed in literature for other Ni-Mn-Ga based alloys. The structure of 5M martensite phase of Ni-2(Mn1-xFex)Ga with 0 < x < 0.2 is determined by optimizing both the shear (changing c/a) and wavelike shuffle of atoms in (110) planes along [1 (1) over bar0] direction adopting the experimentally determined modulation function. The energy difference Delta E-AM between the austenite and 5M phases decreases with increasing x up to 0.05, following the lower Delta E-AM corresponding to lower T-M rule. However, with x larger than 0.05, Delta E-AM increases, against the experimental T-M similar to x behavior. We propose that, if taking the temperature effect and the spin-orbital coupling into account, the Delta E-AM similar to x curve might be altered and may explain the unusual composition dependence of Ni-2(Mn1-xFex)Ga.

    • The influences of composition and Mn-Ga/Al disordering on the magnetic and elastic properties of the Ni2Mn(Al1-xGax) Hensler alloy are investigated by the use of the first-principles exact muffin-tin orbital method in combination with coherent-potential approximation. The transition temperature from the completely disordered B2 phase to the ordered L2(1) phase, estimated by the use of Bragg-Williams-Gorsky approximation, is in excellent agreement with experiments. The site-occupancy in the partially disordered alloy is determined by comparing the free energies of the alloys with different site-occupation configurations. It is found that Mn atoms generally prefer to exchange with Al atoms for the alloy with low degree of disorder and low Ga concentration. With increasing degree of disorder and Ga concentration, Mn may exchange with Ga as well. The total magnetic moment of the completely ordered alloy exhibits a minimum around x = 0.7 due to the competition between the increasing magnetic moments of Mn atoms and the decreasing moments of Ni atoms with increasing x. For the partially disordered alloy, both total and local magnetic moments of Mn and Ni decrease linearly with increasing degree of disorder, and Ga atoms show significant magnetism. The shear moduli C of the alloys are calculated with respect to both x and the degree of disorder. The results show that C decreases with increasing x and degree of disorder. The dependence on composition and on the degree of disorder of the martensitic transition temperatures is discussed in terms of the calculated C.

  • First Report of Small Skeletal Fossils from the Upper Guojiaba Formation (Series 2, Cambrian), Southern Shaanxi, South China
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Biology. - : MDPI. - 2079-7737. ; 12:7
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A small skeletal fossil assemblage is described for the first time from the bioclastic limestone interbeds of the siltstone-dominated Guojiaba Formation, southern Shaanxi, China. The carbonate-hosted fossils include brachiopods (Eohadrotreta zhujiahensis, Eohadrotreta zhenbaensis, Spinobolus sp., Kuangshanotreta malungensis, Kyrshabaktella sp., Lingulellotreta yuanshanensis, Eoobolus incipiens, and Eoobolus sp.), sphenothallids (Sphenothallus sp.), archaeocyaths (Robustocyathus sp. and Yukonocyathus sp.), bradoriids (Kunmingella douvillei), chancelloriids sclerites (Onychia sp., Allonnia sp., Diminia sp., Archiasterella pentactina, and Chancelloria cf. eros), echinoderm plates, fragments of trilobites (Eoredlichia sp.), and hyolithelminths. The discovery of archaeocyaths in the Guojiaba Formation significantly extends their stratigraphic range in South China from the early Tsanglangpuian at least to the late Chiungchussuan. Thus, the Guojiaba Formation now represents the lowest known stratigraphic horizon where archaeocyath fossils have been found in the southern Shaanxi area. The overall assemblage is most comparable, in terms of composition, to Small skeletal fossil (SSF) assemblages from the early Cambrian Chengjiang fauna recovered from the Yu’anshan Formation in eastern Yunnan Province. The existing position that the Guojiaba Formation is correlated with Stage 3 in Cambrian Series 2 is strongly upheld based on the fossil assemblage recovered in this study.Simple SummarySmall skeletal fossils are reported for the first time from the early Cambrian Guojiaba Formation, southern Shaanxi, China. All specimens were recovered from bioclastic limestone interbeds and encompass a wide variety of skeletal clades, including brachiopods, sphenothallids, archaeocyaths, bradoriids, sponge spicules, echinoderm plates, and trilobite spines. The archaeocyaths described herein are considerably older than those described from the Xiannvdong Formation, which was previously assumed to contain the lowest archaeocyath-bearing horizons in South China. The brachiopod Lingulellotreta yuanshanensis is recorded for the first time from the Fucheng area, with previous records confined mainly to the Chengjiang Fauna-bearing Yu’anshan Formation in the lower Cambrian, the eastern Yunnan Province. Micro-morphological and elemental analyses of the small skeletal fossil assemblages were carried out using SEM, BSEM, and Micro X–ray fluorescence. The skeletal fauna in the Guojiaba Formation resembles the assemblages recovered from the upper Yu’anshan Formation (Chengjiang Fauna) in eastern Yunnan Province. Based on the recovered assemblage, the biostratigraphic age of the Guojiaba Formation correlates with the Chiungchussuan Stage (Stage 3 of Cambrian Series 2).
