  • AN H alpha NUCLEAR SPIRAL STRUCTURE IN THE E0 ACTIVE GALAXY Arp 102B
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Astrophysical Journal. - 0004-637X .- 1538-4357. ; 736:2, s. 77-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report the discovery of a two-armed mini-spiral structure within the inner kiloparsec of the E0 LINER/Seyfert 1 galaxy Arp 102B. The arms are observed in H alpha emission and located east and west of the nucleus, extending up to approximate to 1 kpc from it. We use narrow-band imaging from the Hubble Space Telescope Advanced Camera for Surveys, in combination with archival Very Large Array radio images at 3.6 and 6 cm to investigate the origin of the nuclear spiral. From the H alpha luminosity of the spiral, we obtain an ionized gas mass of the order of 10(6) solar masses. One possibility is that the nuclear spiral represents a gas inflow triggered by a recent accretion event which has replenished the accretion disk, giving rise to the double-peaked emission-line profiles characteristic of Arp 102B. However, the radio images show a one-sided curved jet which correlates with the eastern spiral arm observed in the H alpha image. A published milliarcsecond radio image also shows a one-sided structure at position angle approximate to 40 degrees, approximately aligned with the inner part of the eastern spiral arm. The absence of a radio counterpart to the western spiral arm is tentatively interpreted as indicating that the jet is relativistic, with an estimated speed of 0.45c. Estimates of the jet kinetic energy and the ionizing luminosity of the active nucleus indicate that both are capable of ionizing the gas along the spiral arms. We conclude that, although the gas in the nuclear region may have originated in an accretion event, the mini spiral is most likely the result of a jet-cloud interaction rather than an inflowing stream.

  • Linguistic Images of Emotions in Translation from Polish into Swedish : Henryk Sienkiewicz as a Case in Point
  • 2001
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The purpose of this study is to investigate differences in manifesting emotions in the Polish writer Henryk Sienkiewicz's texts and their Swedish translations, as well as the translation strategies used in this area. The empirical base material for the dissertation consists of three short stories (Janko Muzykant, Jamioł, Bądź błogosławiona) and one novel (Ogniem i mieczem). As a first step Henryk Sienkiewicz and his texts are presented and criteria for selecting research material discussed.Secondly, the concept of emotion is explored and theoretical as well as methodological issues discussed.Lastly, the comparative analysis is presented. This is done in four chapters in which linguistic units associated with emotions have been compared with their Swedish translation equivalents. These units are: ethic and beneficiary datives, expressive derivatives, emotive interjections and lexical units that represent emotions from the semantic field of 'strach' ('≈fear').The conclusions are that: there are differences between the source and the target texts as regards emotions which result in changes of the perlocutionary force;the differences are most significant when translation of linguistic units from the syntactic and morphological level in the source text are considered, that is dative forms and expressive derivatives;the differences are less significant when translation of linguistic units from the lexical level are considered;the most common translation strategies are level shifts for translation of items from the syntactic and morphological levels, and semantic strategies, i.e. selecting a synonym for items from the lexical level.

  • Czasowniki plurakcyjne w języku polskim?
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Slovo. - Uppsala. - 2001-7359. ; 55, s. 110-117
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Pluractionality is a syntactic, morphological and semantic category, which originally referred to verbs in the Chadic languages of Africa. Pluractional verbs prefer plural subjects and/or plural objects. Are there any traces of pluractivity in Polish? Most probably, some of frequentative and distributive verbs (like the prototypical pozagryzać ‘to bite’, on several objects, poprzyjeżdżać ‘to come’, performed by several agents) are pluractional, as they prefer plural agents or patients.

  • ‘A Machine for Living’ : Urban Domesticity in Polish Literature and Cinema 1969–2008
  • 2015
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The aim of this dissertation is to study urban domesticity in Polish film and literature against the background of the political and social transformations that have taken place in recent decades. The study begins with the so-called belle époque of the Polish People’s Republic and the decade of Edward Gierek, continues through the political upheavals, the period of martial law, and the system transformation of 1989 and the two following decades, which have been marked by the introduction of democracy, global capitalism, consumerism etc.The primary sources consist of almost thirty literary and cinematic works from various genres covering a period of forty years – twenty before the system change, and twenty after. Their common denominator is their setting in the socialist housing projects (blokowisko).  The dissertation places itself in the field of geocriticism and literary/cinematic spatiality. The object of the study is the ̒social space’ (Henri Lefebvre) of the urban home, and the main analytical frames are spatial representations and narrative space, which are viewed as important in shaping both character and plot. The analysis also draws from cultural theory by Michel Foucault, Marc Augé, Mikhail Bakhtin, Mircea Eliade, and Loïc Wacquant. The dissertation detects a shift in the representations of the urban home that indicates that the home has become more private and secluded after 1989, also suggesting that a spatial and social marginalization of the socialist housing projects has occurred. These findings are interpreted as consistent with theories in human geography on changes in the perception and experience of space due to global paradigm shifts and changes in the production system.
