  • Nuclear physics midterm plan at Legnaro National Laboratories (LNL)
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal Plus. - 2190-5444. ; 138:8, s. 3-26
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The next years will see the completion of the radioactive ion beam facility SPES (Selective Production of Exotic Species) and the upgrade of the accelerators complex at Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare – Legnaro National Laboratories (LNL) opening up new possibilities in the fields of nuclear structure, nuclear dynamics, nuclear astrophysics, and applications. The nuclear physics community has organised a workshop to discuss the new physics opportunities that will be possible in the near future by employing state-of-the-art detection systems. A detailed discussion of the outcome from the workshop is presented in this report.

  • INTERACTING SUPERNOVAE AND SUPERNOVA IMPOSTORS : SN 2009ip, IS THIS THE END?
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Astrophysical Journal. - 0004-637X .- 1538-4357. ; 767:1, s. 1-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report the results of a three-year-long dedicated monitoring campaign of a restless luminous blue variable (LBV) in NGC 7259. The object, named SN 2009ip, was observed photometrically and spectroscopically in the optical and near-infrared domains. We monitored a number of erupting episodes in the past few years, and increased the density of our observations during eruptive episodes. In this paper, we present the full historical data set from 2009 to 2012 with multi-wavelength dense coverage of the two high-luminosity events between 2012 August and September. We construct bolometric light curves and measure the total luminosities of these eruptive or explosive events. We label them the 2012a event (lasting similar to 50 days) with a peak of 3x10(41) erg s(-1), and the 2012b event (14 day rise time, still ongoing) with a peak of 8 x 1042 erg s(-1). The latter event reached an absolute R-band magnitude of about -18, comparable to that of a core-collapse supernova (SN). Our historical monitoring has detected high-velocity spectral features (similar to 13,000 km s(-1)) in 2011 September, one year before the current SN-like event. This implies that the detection of such high-velocity outflows cannot, conclusively, point to a core-collapse SN origin. We suggest that the initial peak in the 2012a event was unlikely to be due to a faint core-collapse SN. We propose that the high intrinsic luminosity of the latest peak, the variability history of SN 2009ip, and the detection of broad spectral lines indicative of high-velocity ejecta are consistent with a pulsational pair-instability event, and that the star may have survived the last outburst. The question of the survival of the LBV progenitor star and its future fate remain open issues, only to be answered with future monitoring of this historically unique explosion.

  • SN 2009jf : a slow-evolving stripped-envelope core-collapse supernova
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Monthly notices of the Royal Astronomical Society. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 0035-8711 .- 1365-2966. ; 416:4, s. 3138-3159
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present an extensive set of photometric and spectroscopic data for SN 2009jf, a nearby Type Ib supernova (SN), spanning from similar to 20 d before B-band maximum to 1 yr after maximum. We show that SN 2009jf is a slowly evolving and energetic stripped-envelope SN and is likely from a massive progenitor (25-30 M(circle dot)). The large progenitor's mass allows us to explain the complete hydrogen plus helium stripping without invoking the presence of a binary companion. The SN occurred close to a young cluster, in a crowded environment with ongoing star formation. The spectroscopic similarity with the He-poor Type Ic SN 2007gr suggests a common progenitor for some SNe Ib and Ic. The nebular spectra of SN 2009jf are consistent with an asymmetric explosion, with an off-centre dense core. We also find evidence that Herich Ib SNe have a rise time longer than other stripped-envelope SNe, however confirmation of this result and further observations are needed.

  • SN 2009bb : A PECULIAR BROAD-LINED TYPE Ic SUPERNOVA
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Astrophysical Journal. - 0004-637X .- 1538-4357. ; 728:1, s. 14-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Ultraviolet, optical, and near-infrared photometry and optical spectroscopy of the broad-lined Type Ic supernova (SN) 2009bb are presented, following the flux evolution from -10 to +285 days past B-band maximum. Thanks to the very early discovery, it is possible to place tight constraints on the SN explosion epoch. The expansion velocities measured from near maximum spectra are found to be only slightly smaller than those measured from spectra of the prototype broad-lined SN 1998bw associated with GRB 980425. Fitting an analytical model to the pseudobolometric light curve of SN 2009bb suggests that 4.1 +/- 1.9M(circle dot) of material was ejected with 0.22 +/- 0.06 M(circle dot) of it being (56)Ni. The resulting kinetic energy is 1.8 +/- 0.7 x 10(52) erg. This, together with an absolute peak magnitude of M(B) = -18.36 +/- 0.44, places SN 2009bb on the energetic and luminous end of the broad-lined Type Ic (SN Ic) sequence. Detection of helium in the early time optical spectra accompanied with strong radio emission and high metallicity of its environment makes SN 2009bb a peculiar object. Similar to the case for gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), we find that the bulk explosion parameters of SN 2009bb cannot account for the copious energy coupled to relativistic ejecta, and conclude that another energy reservoir (a central engine) is required to power the radio emission. Nevertheless, the analysis of the SN 2009bb nebular spectrum suggests that the failed GRB detection is not imputable to a large angle between the line-of-sight and the GRB beamed radiation. Therefore, if a GRB was produced during the SN 2009bb explosion, it was below the threshold of the current generation of gamma-ray instruments.

  • Coils and power supplies design for the SMART tokamak
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Fusion engineering and design. - : Elsevier BV. - 0920-3796 .- 1873-7196. ; 168, s. 112683-112683
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A new spherical tokamak, the SMall Aspect Ratio Tokamak (SMART), is currently being designed at the University of Seville. The goal of the machine is to achieve a toroidal field of 1 T, a plasma current of 500 kA and a pulse length of 500 ms for a plasma with a major radius of 0.4 m and minor radius of 0.25 m. This contribution presents the design of the coils and power supplies of the machine. The design foresees a central solenoid, 12 toroidal field coils and 8 poloidal field coils. Taking the current waveforms for these set of coils as starting point, each of them has been designed to withstand the Joule heating during the tokamak operation time. An analytical thermal model is employed to obtain the cross sections of each coil and, finally, their dimensions and parameters. The design of flexible and modular power supplies, based on IGBTs and supercapacitors, is presented. The topologies and control strategy of the power supplies are explained, together with a model in MATLAB Simulink to simulate the power supplies performance, proving their feasibility before the construction of the system.

  • Enhanced control strategy for MMC-based STATCOM for unbalanced load compensation
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: 2014 16th European Conference on Power Electronics and Applications (EPE'14-ECCE Europe), Lappeenranta, Finland, 26-28 August 2014. - 2325-0313. - 9781479930159
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Modular Multilevel Converters (MMC) technology is today one of the preferred technology in HVDC and large STATCOM applications due to modularity, fault tolerance and high efficiency, but the voltage balancing becomes very challenging, especially during negative sequence current injection as required for load unbalance compensation. This paper proposes an improved balancing strategy for the delta configuration to overcome this situation based on the injection of a third harmonic zero sequence current. Simulation results have proved the effectiveness of the proposal even where different switching losses and capacitor tolerance are taken in consideration.

  • Induction of protective immunity by vaccination against Chlamydia trachomatis using the major outer membrane protein adjuvanted with CpG oligodeoxynucleotide coupled to the nontoxic B subunit of cholera toxin.
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Vaccine. - : Elsevier BV. - 1873-2518 .- 0264-410X. ; 27:44, s. 6239-46
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The present study was undertaken to test the efficacy of immunization with the native major outer membrane protein (nMOMP) of Chlamydia trachomatis mouse pneumonitis (MoPn) serovar in combination with a novel immunostimulatory adjuvant consisting of CpG oligodeoxynucleotide (ODN) linked to the nontoxic B subunit of cholera toxin (CTB-CpG) to elicit a protective immune response to C. trachomatis. High levels of Chlamydia-specific IgG antibodies were detected in the sera from BALB/c mice immunized intramuscularly and subcutaneously (i.m.+s.c.) with the nMOMP/CTB-CpG vaccine or with nMOMP adjuvanted with a mixture of CT and CpG ODN (CT+CpG). Further, these immunization schemes gave rise to significant T-cell-mediated Chlamydia-specific immune responses. No Chlamydia-specific humoral or cell-mediated immune responses were detected in the control mice vaccinated with ovalbumin together with either CTB-CpG or CT+CpG. Following an intranasal challenge with C. trachomatis the groups of mice immunized with nMOMP plus CTB-CpG, CT+CpG or live C. trachomatis were found to be protected based on their change in body weight and lung weight as well as number of inclusion forming unit recovered from the lungs, as compared with control groups immunized with ovalbumin plus either adjuvants. Interestingly, IFN-gamma-producing CD4(+), but not CD8(+), T-cells showed a significant correlation with the outcomes of the challenge. In conclusion, nMOMP in combination with the novel adjuvant CTB-CpG elicited a significant antigen-specific antibody and cell-mediated immune responses as well as protection against a pulmonary challenge with C. trachomatis.

  • Candidate vaginal microbicides with activity against Chlamydia trachomatis and Neisseria gonorrhoeae
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Antimicrobial Agents. - : Elsevier BV. - 0924-8579 .- 1872-7913. ; 36:2, s. 145-150
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Vaginal microbicides with activity towards organisms that cause sexually transmitted infections have been proposed as a strategy to reduce transmission. Small-molecule inhibitors of Chlamydia trachomatis serovar D belonging to the class of salicylidene acylhydrazides (INPs) have been shown to work through a mechanism that involves iron restriction. Expanding on this work, ten INPs were tested against a lymphogranuloma venereum strain of C. trachomatis (serovar L2), Neisseria gonorrhoeae, and hydrogen peroxide-producing Lactobacillus crispatus and Lactobacillus jensenii. Seven INPs had minimal inhibitory concentrations (MICs) and minimal bactericidal concentrations of <50 microM towards C. trachomatis L2. Three INPs had a MIC <12.5 microM against N. gonorrhoeae. Inhibition was reversed by iron, holo-transferrin and holo-lactoferrin but not by the iron-poor forms of these compounds. The compounds exhibited no bactericidal activity toward Lactobacillus. The INPs were not cytotoxic to HeLa 229 cells. When INP 0341 was tested in a mouse model of a Chlamydia vaginal infection there was a significant reduction in the number of mice shedding C. trachomatis up to 4 days after infection (P<0.01). In summary, select INPs are promising vaginal microbicide candidates as they inhibit the growth of two common sexually transmitted organisms in vitro, are active in a mouse model against C. trachomatis, are not cytotoxic and do not inhibit organisms that compose the normal vaginal flora.

  • Reversal of the Antichlamydial Activity of Putative Type III Secretion Inhibitors by Iron
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Infection and Immunity. ; 75:7, s. 3478-89
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • INPs, which are chemically synthesized compounds belonging to a class of acylated hydrazones of salicylaldehydes, can inhibit the growth of Chlamydiaceae. Evidence has been presented that in Yersinia and Chlamydia INPs may affect the type III secretion (T3S) system. In the present study 25 INPs were screened for antichlamydial activity at a concentration of 50 µM, and 14 were able to completely inhibit the growth of Chlamydia trachomatis serovar D in McCoy and HeLa 229 cells. The antichlamydial activities of two of these INPs, INPs 0341 and 0400, were further characterized due to their low cytotoxicity. These compounds were found to inhibit C. trachomatis in a dose-dependent manner; were not toxic to elementary bodies; were cidal at a concentration of 20 µM; inhibited all Chlamydiaceae tested; and could inhibit the development of C. trachomatis as determined by the yield of progeny when they were added up to 24 h postinfection. INP 0341 was able to affect the expression of several T3S genes. Compared to the expression in control cultures, lcrH-1, copB, and incA, all middle- to late-expressed T3S genes, were not expressed in the INP 0341-treated cultures 24 to 36 h postinfection. Iron, supplied as ferrous sulfate, as ferric chloride, or as holo-transferrin, was able to negate the antichlamydial properties of the INPs. In contrast, apo-transferrin and other divalent metal ions tested were not able to reverse the inhibitory effect of the INPs. In conclusion, the potent antichlamydial activity of INPs is directly or indirectly linked with iron, and this inhibition of Chlamydia has an effect on the T3S system of this intracellular pathogen.

  • Analysis of occupant kinematics and dynamics in nearside oblique impacts
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Traffic Injury Prevention. - : Taylor & Francis. - 1538-9588 .- 1538-957X. ; 17, s. 86-92
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objective: The objective of this article is to analyze the kinematics and dynamics of restrained postmortem human surrogates (PMHS) exposed to a nearside oblique impact and the injuries that were found after the tests. Methods: Three male PMHS of similar age (64 4years) and anthropometry (weight: 61 9.6kg; stature: 172 +/- 2.7cm) were exposed to a 30 degrees nearside oblique impact at 34km/h. The test fixture approximated the seating position of a front seat occupant. A rigid seat was designed to match the pelvic displacement in a vehicle seat. Surrogates were restrained by a 3-point seat belt consisting of a 2kN pretensioner (PT), 4.5kN force-limiting shoulder belt, and a 3.5kN PT lap belt. The shoulder belt PT was not fired in one of the tests. Trajectories of the head, shoulder, and hip joint (bilaterally) were recorded at 1,000Hz by a 3D motion capture system. The 3D acceleration and angular rate of the head, T1, and pelvis, and the 3D acceleration of selected spinal locations was measured at 10,000Hz. Seat belt load cells measured the belt tension at 4 locations. PMHS donation and handling were performed with the approval of the relevant regional ethics review board. Results: Activation of the shoulder PT reduced substantially the peak forward excursion of the head but did not influence the lateral displacement of the head center of gravity (CG). In all 3 subjects, the lateral excursion of the head CG (291.1, 290, 292.1mm) was greater than the forward displacement (271.4, 216.7, 171.5mm). The hip joint excursion of the PMHS that was not exposed to the shoulder PT seat belt was twice the magnitude observed for the other 2 subjects. The 3 PMHS sustained clavicle fractures on the shoulder loaded by the seat belt and 2 of them were diagnosed atlantoaxial subluxation in the radiologist examination. Avulsion fractures of the right lamina of T1, T2, T3, and T4 were found when the PT was not used. The 3 PMHS received multiple fractures spread over both aspects of the rib cage and involving the posterior aspect of it.Conclusion: In this study of nearside oblique impact loading, the PMHS exhibited kinematics characterized by reduced torso pitching and increased lateral head excursion as compared to previous frontal impact results. These kinematics resulted in potential cervical and thoracic spinal injuries and in complete, displaced fractures of the lateral and posterior aspects of the rib cage. Though this is a limited number of subjects, it shows the necessity of further understanding of the kinematics of occupants exposed to this loading mode.

  • Study of the Kinematics of the THOR dummy in Nearside Oblique Impacts
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: 2016 IRCOBI Conference Proceedings - International Research Council on the Biomechanics of Injury.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Oblique and small-overlap crashes are the second most common frontal crash type leading to fatal outcome. This study discusses a simplified test rig suitable to analyse the performance of the THOR dummy in oblique impacts. Secondly, this paper compares the kinematics and dynamics of the THOR dummy under the loading of two types of seat belts. The generic test rig was based on the Gold Standard fixture. By means of mathematical simulations with the THOR dummy model different seat designs were evaluated so that the dummy kinematics could approximate those observed in real vehicles. Thereafter two different three-point seat belt systems were evaluated via physical and computer-modelled sled tests: a pretensioned (shoulder retractor and lap) force-limiting seat belt (reference seat belt) and an innovative belt in which the shoulder and the lap bands were split (split buckle). The study shows that THOR pelvic displacement was significantly reduced with the modified seat compared to the originally flat Gold Standard seat in a more realistic manner. The THOR dummy was able to discriminate between the two seat belt systems and the results suggest that the split buckle restraint has the potential to achieve significant injury reducing benefits in the oblique loading condition.

  • Kinematic assessment of subject personification of human body models (THUMS)
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Conference proceedings International Research Council on the Biomechanics of Injury, IRCOBI. - 2235-3151. ; 2018-September, s. 191-206
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The goal of this study was to quantify the effect of improving the geometry of a human body model on the accuracy of the predicted kinematics for 4 post-mortem human subject sled tests. Three modifications to the computational human body model THUMS were carried out to evaluate if subject personification can increase the agreement between predicted and measured kinematics of post-mortem human subjects in full frontal and nearside oblique impacts. The modifications consisted of: adjusting the human body model mass to the actual subject mass, morphing it to the actual anthropometry of each subject and finally adjustment of the model initial position to the measured position in selected post-mortem human subject tests. A quantitative assessment of the agreement between predicted and measured response was carried out by means of CORA analysis by comparing the displacement of selected anatomical landmarks (head CoG, T1 and T8 vertebre and H-Point). For all three scenarios, the more similar the human body model was to the anthropometry and posture of the sled tested post-mortem human subject, the more similar the predictions were to the measured responses of the post-mortem human subject, resulting in higher CORA score.
