  • Optimization of state-of-the-art fuzzy-metaheuristic ANFIS-based machine learning models for flood susceptibility prediction mapping in the Middle Ganga Plain, India
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Science of the Total Environment. - : Elsevier. - 0048-9697 .- 1879-1026. ; 750
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study is an attempt to quantitatively test and compare novel advanced-machine learning algorithms in terms of their performance in achieving the goal of predicting flood susceptible areas in a low altitudinal range, sub-tropical floodplain environmental setting, like that prevailing in the Middle Ganga Plain (MGP), India. This part of the Ganga floodplain region, which under the influence of undergoing active tectonic regime related subsidence, is the hotbed of annual flood disaster. This makes the region one of the best natural laboratories to test the flood susceptibility models for establishing a universalization of such models in low relief highly flood prone areas. Based on highly sophisticated flood inventory archived for this region, and 12 flood conditioning factors viz. annual rainfall, soil type, stream density, distance from stream, distance from road, Topographic Wetness Index (TWI), altitude, slope aspect, slope, curvature, land use/land cover, and geomorphology, an advanced novel hybrid model Adaptive Neuro Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS), and three metaheuristic models-based ensembles with ANFIS namely ANFIS-GA (Genetic Algorithm), ANFIS-DE (Differential Evolution), and ANFIS-PSO (Particle Swarm Optimization), have been applied for zonation of the flood susceptible areas. The flood inventory dataset, prepared by collected flood samples, were apportioned into 70:30 classes to prepare training and validation datasets. One independent validation method, the Area-Under Receiver Operating Characteristic (AUROC) Curve, and other 11 cut-off-dependent model evaluation metrices have helped to conclude that the ANIFS-GA has outperformed other three models with highest success rate AUC = 0.922 and prediction rate AUC = 0.924. The accuracy was also found to be highest for ANFIS-GA during training (0.886) & validation (0.883). Better performance of ANIFS-GA than the individual models as well as some ensemble models suggests and warrants further study in this topoclimatic environment using other classes of susceptibility models. This will further help establishing a benchmark model with capability of highest accuracy and sensitivity performance in the similar topographic and climatic setting taking assumption of the quality of input parameters as constant.

  • Plant proteomics in India and Nepal : Current status and challenges ahead
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Physiology and Molecular Biology of Plants. - : Springer-Verlag New York. - 0971-5894 .- 0974-0430. ; 19:4, s. 461-477
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Plant proteomics has made tremendous contributions in understanding the complex processes of plant biology. Here, its current status in India and Nepal is discussed. Gel-based proteomics is predominantly utilized on crops and non-crops to analyze majorly abiotic (49 %) and biotic (18 %) stress, development (11 %) and post-translational modifications (7 %). Rice is the most explored system (36 %) with major focus on abiotic mainly dehydration (36 %) stress. In spite of expensive proteomics setup and scarcity of trained workforce, output in form of publications is encouraging. To boost plant proteomics in India and Nepal, researchers have discussed ground level issues among themselves and with the International Plant Proteomics Organization (INPPO) to act in priority on concerns like food security. Active collaboration may help in translating this knowledge to fruitful applications.

  • Isolation of anhydrous tetrabutylphosphonium lanthanide hexa- and penta-nitrates from ionic liquids
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Polyhedron. - : Elsevier BV. - 0277-5387 .- 1873-3719. ; 232
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Our attempts to use an ionic liquid strategy to force f-element coordination of soft donor adenine and 4,5-dicyanoimidazole using 1-pot reactions in water using hydrated lanthanide salts failed, instead resulting in the isolation of anhydrous lanthanide nitrate salts. Reactions of previously ground mixtures of 40 % aq. [P4444][OH] and adenine with Nd(NO3)3·6H2O or Sm(NO3)3·6H2O followed by hand grinding and heating to 90 °C for 10 h led to hot crystallization of anhydrous [P4444]2[Nd(NO3)5] and [P4444]2[Sm(NO3)5]. The same reaction with 4,5-dicyanoimidazole and Nd(NO3)3·6H2O but without heating (10 h, room temperature) to prevent ligand decomposition, led to crystallization of anhydrous [P4444]3[Nd(NO3)6]. [P4444]3[Nd(NO3)6] could also be isolated by conducting the first reaction without using adenine. The single crystal X-ray diffraction structures of the three new anhydrous salts were examined to provide clues to the observed behavior. The [P4444]+ cations allow charge balance while forming box-type encapsulations around the anionic counterpart which has been previously reported in similar structures. The fact that these anhydrous salts were prepared from water with hydrated starting materials and no precautions taken to keep the crystal growing process anhydrous, suggests synthetic strategies that can potentially be beneficial for more advanced separations procedures.

  • Global burden of peripheral artery disease and its risk factors, 1990-2019 : a systematic analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: The Lancet Global Health. - : Elsevier. - 2214-109X. ; 11:10, s. E1553-E1565
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Peripheral artery disease is a growing public health problem. We aimed to estimate the global disease burden of peripheral artery disease, its risk factors, and temporospatial trends to inform policy and public measures. Methods: Data on peripheral artery disease were modelled using the Global Burden of Disease, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2019 database. Prevalence, disability-adjusted life years (DALYs), and mortality estimates of peripheral artery disease were extracted from GBD 2019. Total DALYs and age-standardised DALY rate of peripheral artery disease attributed to modifiable risk factors were also assessed.Findings: In 2019, the number of people aged 40 years and older with peripheral artery disease was 113 million (95% uncertainty interval [UI] 99 center dot 2-128 center dot 4), with a global prevalence of 1 center dot 52% (95% UI 1 center dot 33-1 center dot 72), of which 42 center dot 6% was in countries with low to middle Socio-demographic Index (SDI). The global prevalence of peripheral artery disease was higher in older people, (14 center dot 91% [12 center dot 41-17 center dot 87] in those aged 80-84 years), and was generally higher in females than in males. Globally, the total number of DALYs attributable to modifiable risk factors in 2019 accounted for 69 center dot 4% (64 center dot 2-74 center dot 3) of total peripheral artery disease DALYs. The prevalence of peripheral artery disease was highest in countries with high SDI and lowest in countries with low SDI, whereas DALY and mortality rates showed U-shaped curves, with the highest burden in the high and low SDI quintiles.Interpretation: The total number of people with peripheral artery disease has increased globally from 1990 to 2019. Despite the lower prevalence of peripheral artery disease in males and low-income countries, these groups showed similar DALY rates to females and higher-income countries, highlighting disproportionate burden in these groups. Modifiable risk factors were responsible for around 70% of the global peripheral artery disease burden. Public measures could mitigate the burden of peripheral artery disease by modifying risk factors.

  • CO2 capture from ambient air via crystallization with tetraalkylammonium hydroxides
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Dalton Transactions. - : Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC). - 1477-9226 .- 1477-9234. ; 51:46, s. 17724-17732
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Aqueous solutions of a series of short carbon chain tetra(n-alkyl)ammonium hydroxides, [Nnnnn][OH] with n = 2: n-ethyl, 3: n-propyl, 4: n-butyl, have been serendipitously found to be potential candidates for direct air carbon capture (DAC) when being used as reagents in more complicated reactions. Aqueous solutions of [N3333][OH], [N2222][OH], or [N3333][OH] with UO2SO4·3H2O and 1,4-diamidoximylbenzene, and [N4444][OH] with cytosine (HCyt) directly absorb CO2 from the atmosphere upon mild heating in the open atmosphere crystallizing in complexes reaching up to 2 : 1 CO2/[Nnnnn]OH ratio. [N2222][HCO3]·3H2O (1), [N2222]2[H(HCO3)3]·5H2O (2), [N3333][HCO3]·0.5H2O (3), [N3333][H(HCO3)2] (4), [N3333]2[(tpa)(H2CO3)2] (5; tpa = terephthalate), [N4444][H(Cyt)(HCO3)]·H2O (6) and [N4444][H2(Cyt)2(HCO3)]·H2O (7) have been isolated in crystalline form and structurally characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction. The compounds are characterized by complex polyanionic formations from bicarbonate dimers ([(HCO3)2·(H2O)]24−) or chains ([H(HCO3)2]nn− or [H2(tpa)(HCO3)2]n2n−) to water-bicarbonate associates ([(HCO3)2·6H2O]2− and [(H2CO3·(HCO3)2)2·6H2O·2H2O]2−) and three-component anionic layers ([H(Cyt)(HCO3)·H2O]nn− and [H2(Cyt)2(HCO3)·H2O]nn−) frequently showing proton sharing. While some hydroxides themselves can maintain a high CO2/[Nnnnn][OH] ratio, particularly 2 and 4, the presence of secondary hydrogen bond donors/acceptors may increase the sorption efficiency through decreased solubility and enhanced crystallization.

  • Crystallographic evidence of Watson-Crick connectivity in the base pair of anionic adenine with thymine
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America. - : Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. - 0027-8424 .- 1091-6490. ; 117:31, s. 18224-18230
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Utilizing an ionic liquid strategy, we report crystal structures of salts of free anionic nucleobases and base pairs previously studied only computationally and in the gas phase. Reaction of tetrabutylammonium ([N-4444](+)) or tetrabutylphosphonium ([P-4444](+)) hydroxide with adenine (HAd) and thymine (HThy) led to hydrated salts of deprotonated adenine, [N-4444][Ad]center dot 2H(2)O, and thymine, [P4444][Thy]center dot 2H(2)O, as well as the double salt cocrystal, [P-4444](2)[Ad][Thy]center dot 3H(2)O center dot 2HThy. The cocrystal includes the anionic [Ad-(HThy)] base pair which is a stable formation in the solid state that has previously not even been suggested. It exhibits Watson-Crick connectivity as found in DNA but which is unusual for the free neutral base pairs. The stability of the observed anionic bases and their supramolecular formations and hydrates has also been examined by electronic structure calculations, contributing to more insight into how base pairs can bind when a proton is removed and highlighting mechanisms of stabilization or chemical transformation in the DNA chains.

  • Forcing Dicyanamide Coordination to f-Elements by Dissolution in Dicyanamide-Based Ionic Liquids
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Inorganic Chemistry. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 0020-1669 .- 1520-510X. ; 59:10, s. 7227-7237
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A robust general route to lanthanide dicyanamide (DCA(-)) complexes has been developed where f-element salts are dissolved in DCA(-)-based ionic liquids (ILs) directly or formed in situ, forcing coordination of these normally weakly coordinating soft N-donor anions, even in an ambient, non-moisture-excluding environment. A series of lanthanide complexes [C(2)mim][Ln(DCA)(4)(H2O)(4)] (C(2)mim = 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium; Ln = La, Nd, Eu, Tb, Dy, and Yb) and [C(2)mim](3n)[La(OH2)(4) (mu(2)-DCA)(4)](n)[La(OH2)(2)(mu(3)-DCA)(3)(mu(2)-DCA)(4)](2n)(Cl)(4n) were crystallized under a variety of conditions using this methodology and structurally characterized using single crystal X-ray diffraction. Although not all examples were isostructural, the dominant feature across the series was the presence of [Ln(DCA)(4)(H2O)(4)](-) anionic nodes with all terminal DCA(-) ligands accepting hydrogen bonds from the coordinated water molecules forming a 3D metal organic framework. To determine if any structural clues might aid in the further development of the synthetic methodology, the metal-free IL [C(1)mim][DCA] (C(1)mim = 1,3-dimethylimidazolium), a room-temperature solid, crystalline analogue of the reaction IL, which is liquid at room temperature, was also prepared and structurally characterized. The ready isolation of these compounds allowed us to begin an investigation of the physical properties such as the luminescence at room and low temperatures for the Eu, Tb, and Dy representatives.
