  • Expatriate’s and host country National’s Professional Learning in adverse conditions : a case study of Danish Police officers stationed in Greenland

    • Despite a context of challenging working conditions, ethnocentrism, post-colonial tensions and no valorization of local Greenlandic professional knowledge, the Danish Police Officers sent to Greenland report knowledge development. And not intercultural knowledge or interaction skills, but rather important professional learning, which leads them to become better officers once back in Denmark. This contribution, based on a qualitative case study, intends to elicit this unexpected finding and to contribute to further theory development in expatriate adjustment literature. In the present case, no cross-cultural learning (which is the most common reported learning) is reported, but rather professional expertise development. The specificity of the present case and the extraordinary conditions in which the collaboration takes place provides an opportunity to shed a new light on expatriate learning. It seems that from all previously identified variables, only self-efficacy and autonomy are potentially decisive factors for learning. In addition, when expatriates saw Greenland as a place of poor professionalism and obsolete practices, it is precisely this difference that contributed to expatriate development. This case provides an example of how an environment perceived as foreign and undesirable turns out to be beneficial for individual learning.

  • Golfing with a murderer-Professional indifference and identity work in a Danish prison

    • Employees often use dis-identification strategies such as humor or cynicism to cope with emotional difficulties at work. In this paper, we show how dis-identification collapses among Danish correctional officers because of specific emotional contradictions arising from the 'dirty' aspects of their work. Correctional officers face the emotional dilemma of having to both get involved with the inmates to rehabilitate them and be suspicious of them to maintain security. At the same time, they have to deal with the stigma of their job and cannot easily vent their emotional experiences with outsiders. It therefore becomes difficult to uphold a positive and coherent sense of self. In order to maintain a dignified sense of self and a positive attitude towards work correctional officers construct a space of professional indifference. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

    • Gift exchange, and the economy associated with it, is not restricted only to those tribal cultures where it has mostly been studied, but can also appear as an element of contemporary market economies. Yet despite this, the practical functioning of gift relationships between business partners is an understudied area. By studying the giving of corporate Christmas gifts, this article contributes to closing this gap. Gifts are seen here as signifiers of hierarchy, position and intent, and although market economy reigns supreme in Western societies, important layers of social economies-such as gift economies-dictate the way in which we behave and read the market economy. Christmas gifts thus represent more than their economic value, and have a social value that is capable of connecting or separating business partners in very specific ways. An understanding of this is crucial for companies trying to manage their image and the signals they send to business partners.

    • Many studies have shown that female managers have to work harder than men to gain recognition, and that this often leads top female managers away from the leadership style characterized by soft skills and emotional understanding. Instead, another characterization can be seen; that of tough gendered machines fighting their way to the top - cyborgs. This article uses Haraway's metaphor of the cyborg to explore the way in which a top female manger tries to fight for gender equality by employing masculine strategies with a female body. However, contrary to the usual argument that women become masculinized leaders, the article argues for a reading in which female leadership becomes both excessively masculine and excessively feminine, challenging simplified readings of gendered leadership. In the case-study, this leads to a situation where high-performance behaviour from a top female leader in effect ends up reinforcing gender inequality.

  • Ethical interruption and the creative process - A reflection on the new

    • Both organizations and management theory seem obsessed with creativity and 'the new,' but lately, the 'newness' of this so-called 'new' has also been questioned. With this paper, I continue in this critical fashion and point to the peculiar fact that the obsession with the new is accompanied by just as strong a rejection of that which is different. Overcoming this paradox, the paper emphasizes the relatively ignored ethical element in organizational creativity and in the 'production' of novelty. In doing this, I draw on the moral philosophy of Emmanuel Levinas to argue that profound novelty can only be accomplished in an ethical encounter with the Other in which not only is knowledge questioned but also the interruption of the Other changes the self as a knower. In other words, this paper argues for ethics as creativity.

    • Approaches to business ethics can be roughly divided into two streams: aEuro(1)codes of behavior' and aEuro(1)forms of subjectification', with code-oriented approaches clearly dominating the field. Through an elaboration of poststructuralist approaches to moral philosophy, this paper questions the emphasis on codes of behaviour and, thus, the conceptions of the moral and responsible subject that are inherent in rule-based approaches. As a consequence of this critique, the concept of a practice-based aEuro(1)ethics of responsiveness' in which ethics is never final but rather always aEuro(1)to come', is investigated. In such an approach the ethical self is understood as being continuously constituted within power/knowledge relations. Following this line, we ask how one can become a responsible subject while also acknowledging certain limits of full responsibility. We thereby explore responsibility as a considered but unconditional openness in response to the other.

  • Reflections on responsibility and justice Coaching human rights in South Africa

    • Purpose - The purpose of this article is to question whether business is ethical as long as it follows rules, and on this view, to reflect over the relation between responsibility and justice. Design/methodology/approach - To exemplify this relation, the paper is based on in-depth interviews with a human rights consultant. In this way, the paper presents a story from the field and thus follows a narrative method to retell the story of the consultant leading a human rights project in South Africa. Findings - The paper concludes that following rules is not enough to ensure ethical business in a global market place. As global business rests on dynamics and flexibility, it seems limited that most business ethics rests on bureaucratic notions. The value of also viewing ethical decision-making as personal responsibility is introduced through the philosophy of Emmanuel Levinas. Research limitations/implications - The study is based on in depth interviews with one person. Although this method ensures access to deeply personal and thorough knowledge about the event, it also has its limitation and risk of bias. Although this paper points towards some interesting relations between personal responsibility and international/organisational justice, more research is needed in the field of personal responsibility to make stronger conclusions. Practical implications - The paper proposes that people working at the global market place could benefit from being educated in personal ethics and not only bureaucratic notions of ethics. Originality/value - The paper provides valuable insight into the scarcely researched area of personalised business ethics.
