  • Coulomb dissociation of O-16 into He-4 and C-12
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: NUCLEAR PHYSICS IN ASTROPHYSICS - X, NPA-X 2022. - : EDP Sciences. - 2100-014X. ; 279
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We measured the Coulomb dissociation of O-16 into He-4 and C-12 within the FAIR Phase-0 program at GSI Helmholtzzentrum fur Schwerionenforschung Darmstadt, Germany. From this we will extract the photon dissociation cross section O-16(alpha,gamma)C-12, which is the time reversed reaction to C-12(alpha,gamma)O-16. With this indirect method, we aim to improve on the accuracy of the experimental data at lower energies than measured so far. The expected low cross section for the Coulomb dissociation reaction and close magnetic rigidity of beam and fragments demand a high precision measurement. Hence, new detector systems were built and radical changes to the (RB)-B-3 setup were necessary to cope with the high-intensity O-16 beam. All tracking detectors were designed to let the unreacted O-16 ions pass, while detecting the C-12 and He-4.

  • Coulomb dissociation of 16O into 4He and 12C
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics: Conference Series. - : IOP Publishing. - 1742-6588 .- 1742-6596. ; 1668:1
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We measured the Coulomb dissociation of 16O into 4He and 12C at the R3B setup in a first campaign within FAIR Phase 0 at GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung, Darmstadt. The goal was to improve the accuracy of the experimental data for the 12C(a,?)16O fusion reaction and to reach lower center-ofmass energies than measured so far. The experiment required beam intensities of 109 16O ions per second at an energy of 500 MeV/nucleon. The rare case of Coulomb breakup into 12C and 4He posed another challenge: The magnetic rigidities of the particles are so close because of the same mass-To-charge-number ratio A/Z = 2 for 16O, 12C and 4He. Hence, radical changes of the R3B setup were necessary. All detectors had slits to allow the passage of the unreacted 16O ions, while 4He and 12C would hit the detectors' active areas depending on the scattering angle and their relative energies. We developed and built detectors based on organic scintillators to track and identify the reaction products with sufficient precision.

  • Ingår i: Physics reports. - : Elsevier. - 0370-1573 .- 1873-6270. ; 1023, s. 1-84
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Presently under construction in Lund, Sweden, the European Spallation Source (ESS) will be the world’s brightest neutron source. As such, it has the potential for a particle physics program with a unique reach and which is complementary to that available at other facilities. This paper describes proposed particle physics activities for the ESS. These encompass the exploitation of both the neutrons and neutrinos produced at the ESS for high precision (sensitivity) measurements (searches).

  • Coulomb excitation of the N=50 nucleus Zn-80
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: AIP Conference Proceedings. - 1551-7616 .- 0094-243X. ; 1012, s. 291-295 453
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Neutron rich Zinc isotopes, including the N=50 nucleus Zn-80, were produced and post-accelerated at the Radioactive Ion Beam (RIB) facility REX-ISOLDE (CERN). Low-energy Coulomb excitation was induced on these isotopes after post-acceleration, yielding B(E2) strengths to the first excited 2(+) states. For the first time, an excited state in Zn-80 was observed and the 2(1)(+) state in Zn-78 was established. The measured B(E2,2(1)(+) -> 0(1)(+)) values are compared to two sets of large scale shell model calculations. Both calculations reproduce the observed B(E2) systematics for the full Zinc isotopic chain. The results for N=50 isotones indicate a good N=50 shell closure and a strong Z=28 proton core polarization. The new results serve as benchmarks to establish theoretical models, predicting the nuclear properties of the doubly magic nucleus Ni-78.

    • We present the design, prototype developments and test results of the new time-of-flight detector (ToFD) which is part of the R3B experimental setup at GSI and FAIR, Darmstadt, Germany. The ToFD detector is able to detect heavy-ion residues of all charges at relativistic energies with a relative energy precision σΔE/ ΔE of up to 1% and a time precision of up to 14 ps (sigma). Together with an elaborate particle-tracking system, the full identification of relativistic ions from hydrogen up to uranium in mass and nuclear charge is possible.

  • Multiparticle emission in the decay of Ar-31
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C - Nuclear Physics. - 2469-9985 .- 2469-9993. ; 89:6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A multihit capacity setup was used to study the decay of the dripline nucleus Ar-31, produced at the ISOLDE facility at CERN. A spectroscopic analysis of the beta-delayed three-proton decay of Ar-31 is presented for the first time together with a quantitative analysis of the beta-delayed 2p gamma decay. A new method for determination of the spin of low-lying levels in the beta p daughter 30S using proton-proton angular correlations is presented and used to determine that the spin of the 5.2-MeV level is most likely 3(+) with 4(+) also possible. The half-life of Ar-31 is found to be 15.1(3) ms. An improved analysis of the Fermi beta strength including the beta 3p-decay mode gives a total measured branching ratio of 3.60(44)%, which is lower than the theoretical value found to be 4.24(43)%. Finally, a previously unidentified. transition from the isobaric analog state in the decay of Ar-33 has been found.

  • Relative proton and gamma widths of astrophysically important states in S-30 studied in the beta-delayed decay of Ar-31
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C - Nuclear Physics. - 2469-9985 .- 2469-9993. ; 87:5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Resonances just above the proton threshold in S-30 affect the P-29(p, gamma)S-30 reaction under astrophysical conditions. The (p,gamma)-reaction rate is currently determined indirectly and depends on the properties of the relevant resonances. We present here a method for finding the ratio between the proton and gamma partial widths of resonances in S-30. The widths are determined from the beta 2p- and beta p gamma-decay of Ar-31, which is produced at the ISOLDE radioactive ion beam facility at the European research organization CERN. Experimental limits on the ratio between the proton and gamma partial widths for astrophysical relevant levels in S-30 have been found for the first time. A level at 4689.2(24) keV is identified in the gamma spectrum, and an upper limit on the Gamma(p)/ Gamma gamma ratio of 0.26 (95% C.L.) is found. In the two-proton spectrum two levels at 5227(3) keV and 5847(4) keV are identified. These levels were previously seen to gamma decay and upper limits on the Gamma(gamma)/Gamma(p) ratio of 0.5 and 9, respectively, (95% C.L.) are found, where the latter differs from previous calculations.

  • Ingår i: Physics Letters, Section B: Nuclear, Elementary Particle and High-Energy Physics. - : Elsevier BV. - 0370-2693. ; 737, s. 383-387

    • We present for the first time precise spectroscopic information on the recently discovered decay mode beta-delayed 3p-emission. The detection of the 3p events gives an increased sensitivity to the high energy part of the Gamow-Teller strength distribution from the decay of Ar-31 revealing that as much as 30% of the strength resides in the beta 3p-decaymode. A simplified description of how the main decay modes evolve as the excitation energy increases in Cl-31 is provided.

  • Measurement of nuclear interaction cross sections towards neutron-skin thickness determination
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Physics Letters, Section B: Nuclear, Elementary Particle and High-Energy Physics. - 0370-2693. ; 855
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The accuracy of reaction theories used to extract properties of exotic nuclei from scattering experiments is often unknown or not quantified, but of utmost importance when, e.g., constraining the equation of state of asymmetric nuclear matter from observables as the neutron-skin thickness. In order to test the Glauber multiple-scattering model, the total interaction cross section of [Formula presented] on carbon targets was measured at initial beam energies of 400, 550, 650, 800, and 1000 MeV/nucleon. The measurements were performed during the first experiment of the newly constructed R3B (Reaction with Relativistic Radioactive Beams) experiment after the start of FAIR Phase-0 at the GSI/FAIR facility with beam energies of 400, 550, 650, 800, and 1000 MeV/nucleon. The combination of the large-acceptance dipole magnet GLAD and a newly designed and highly efficient Time-of-Flight detector enabled a precise transmission measurement with several target thicknesses for each initial beam energy with an experimental uncertainty of ±0.4%. A comparison with the Glauber model revealed a discrepancy of around 3.1% at higher beam energies, which will serve as a crucial baseline for the model-dependent uncertainty in future fragmentation experiments.

  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics: Conference Series. - : IOP Publishing. - 1742-6588 .- 1742-6596. ; 665:1
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The nucleosynthesis of elements beyond iron is dominated by neutron captures in the s and r processes. However, 32 stable, proton-rich isotopes cannot be formed during those processes, because they are shielded from the s-process flow and r-process beta-decay chains. These nuclei are attributed to the p and rp process. For all those processes, current research in nuclear astrophysics addresses the need for more precise reaction data involving radioactive isotopes. Depending on the particular reaction, direct or inverse kinematics, forward or time-reversed direction are investigated to determine or at least to constrain the desired reaction cross sections. The Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research (FAIR) will offer unique, unprecedented opportunities to investigate many of the important reactions. The high yield of radioactive isotopes, even far away from the valley of stability, allows the investigation of isotopes involved in processes as exotic as the r or rp processes.

  • A mapping study on physical activity in stroke rehabilitation: Establishing the baseline
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Journal of Rehabilitation Medicine. - : Medical Journals Sweden AB. - 1650-1977. ; 45:10, s. 997-1003
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objective: To establish physical activity level, environment and social interaction in routine stroke rehabilitation practice. Methods: Patients at 4 hospital stroke rehabilitation units in Sweden at least 7 days post-stroke were observed over 1 week-day at 10 min intervals between 08.00 h and 17.00 h. At each observation, physical activity, location and people present were ascertained. Results: Patients (n=104) had a mean age of 70.3 (standard deviation (SD) 14.4) years. Median time since stroke was 19 (range 7-142) days. Patients were alone for 52% of the day, during this time 7% was spent in standing/walking activities. While with a physiotherapist patients were standing/walking for 43% of the time. Using median regression it was found that the median percentage of time spent in standing/walking was associated with gait independence and age. Gait independence increased the median percentage of time spent in standing/walking by 16.5% (95% confidence interval (CI) 12.1-20.9, p<0.001), while an increase of 1 year of age reduced the median percentage of time spent in standing/walking by 0.16% (95% CI -0.31 to -0.01, p < 0.05). Conclusion: Patients had low levels of physical activity and social interaction. This study suggests that there is a huge potential to increase patients' activity level and augment social interaction above current levels.

  • Coulomb Excitation of Neutron-Rich Zn Isotopes: First Observation of the 2[sub 1][sup +] State in [sup 80]Zn
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. ; 99:14, s. 142501-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Neutron-rich, radioactive Zn isotopes were investigated at the Radioactive Ion Beam facility REX-ISOLDE (CERN) using low-energy Coulomb excitation. The energy of the 21+ state in 78Zn could be firmly established and for the first time the 2+-->01+ transition in 80Zn was observed at 1492(1) keV. B(E2,21+-->01+) values were extracted for 74,76,78,80Zn and compared to large scale shell model calculations. With only two protons outside the Z=28 proton core, 80Zn is the lightest N=50 isotone for which spectroscopic information has been obtained to date. Two sets of advanced shell model calculations reproduce the observed B(E2) systematics. The results for N=50 isotones indicate a good N=50 shell closure and a strong Z=28 proton core polarization. The new results serve as benchmarks to establish theoretical models, predicting the nuclear properties of the doubly magic nucleus 78Ni.

  • Charge recombination versus charge separation in donor-bridge-acceptor systems
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Journal of the American Chemical Society. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 1520-5126 .- 0002-7863. ; 129:1, s. 155-163
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Optimizing the ratio of the rates for charge separation (CS) over charge recombination (CR) is crucial to create long-lived charge-separated states. Mastering the factors that govern the electron transfer (ET) rates is essential when trying to achieve molecular-scale electronics, artificial photosynthesis, and also for the further development of solar cells. Much work has been put into the question of how the donor-acceptor distances and donor-bridge energy gaps affect the electronic coupling, V DA , and thus the rates of ET. We present here a unique comparison on how these factors differently influence the rates for CS and CR in a porphyrin-based donor-bridge-acceptor model system. Our system contains three series, each of which focuses on a separate charge-transfer rate-determining factor, the donor-acceptor distance, the donor-bridge energy gap, and last, the influence of the electron acceptor on the rate for charge transfer. In these three series both CS and CR are governed by superexchange interactions which make a CR/CS comparative study ideal. We show here that the exponential distance dependence increases slightly for CR compared to that for CS as a result of the increased tunneling barrier height for this reaction, in accordance with the McConnell superexchange model. We also show that the dependence on the tunneling barrier height is different for CS and CR. This difference is highly dependent on the electron acceptor and thus cannot solely be explained by the differences in the frontier orbitals of the electron donor in these porphyrin systems. © 2007 American Chemical Society.

  • 2017
  • Ingår i: AIP Conference Proceedings. - : Author(s). - 1551-7616 .- 0094-243X. ; 1894
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The observation of neutrinoless double-beta decay (0νββ) would show that lepton number is violated, reveal that neu-trinos are Majorana particles, and provide information on neutrino mass. A discovery-capable experiment covering the inverted ordering region, with effective Majorana neutrino masses of 15 - 50 meV, will require a tonne-scale experiment with excellent energy resolution and extremely low backgrounds, at the level of ∼0.1 count /(FWHM·t·yr) in the region of the signal. The current generation 76Ge experiments GERDA and the Majorana Demonstrator, utilizing high purity Germanium detectors with an intrinsic energy resolution of 0.12%, have achieved the lowest backgrounds by over an order of magnitude in the 0νββ signal region of all 0νββ experiments. Building on this success, the LEGEND collaboration has been formed to pursue a tonne-scale 76Ge experiment. The collaboration aims to develop a phased 0νββ experimental program with discovery potential at a half-life approaching or at 1028 years, using existing resources as appropriate to expedite physics results.

  • New high-sensitivity searches for neutrons converting into antineutrons and/or sterile neutrons at the HIBEAM/NNBAR experiment at the European Spallation Source
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics G. - : Institute of Physics Publishing (IOPP). - 0954-3899 .- 1361-6471. ; 48:7
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The violation of baryon number, , is an essential ingredient for the preferential creation of matter over antimatter needed to account for the observed baryon asymmetry in the Universe. However, such a process has yet to be experimentally observed. The HIBEAM/NNBAR program is a proposed two-stage experiment at the European Spallation Source to search for baryon number violation. The program will include high-sensitivity searches for processes that violate baryon number by one or two units: free neutron–antineutron oscillation () via mixing, neutron–antineutron oscillation via regeneration from a sterile neutron state (), and neutron disappearance (n → n'); the effective process of neutron regeneration () is also possible. The program can be used to discover and characterize mixing in the neutron, antineutron and sterile neutron sectors. The experiment addresses topical open questions such as the origins of baryogenesis and the nature of dark matter, and is sensitive to scales of new physics substantially in excess of those available at colliders. A goal of the program is to open a discovery window to neutron conversion probabilities (sensitivities) by up to three orders of magnitude compared with previous searches. The opportunity to make such a leap in sensitivity tests should not be squandered. The experiment pulls together a diverse international team of physicists from the particle (collider and low energy) and nuclear physics communities, while also including specialists in neutronics and magnetics.

  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Acta Physica Polonica, Series B.. - 1509-5770 .- 0587-4254. ; 45:2, s. 229-234
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The O-15(2p, gamma)Ne-17 cross section has been studied by the inverse reaction, the Coulomb dissociation of Ne-17. The experiment has been performed at the GSI. The Ne-17 excitation energy prior to decay has been reconstructed by using the invariant-mass method. The preliminary differential and integral Coulomb dissociation cross sections (sigma(Coul)) have been extracted, which provide a photoabsorption (sigma(photo)) and a radiative capture cross section (sigma(cap)). Additionally, important information about the Ne-17 nuclear structure will be obtained. The analysis is in progress.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The unbound isotopes 10Li, 12Li and 13Li have been observed after nucleon-knockout reactions at relativistic energies with 11Li and 14Be beams impinging on a liquid hydrogen target. The channels , and were analysed in the ALADIN-LAND setup at GSI. The 10Li data confirm earlier findings, while the 12Li and 13Li nuclei were observed for the first time. The relative-energy spectrum shows that the ground state of 12Li can be described as a virtual s-state with a scattering length of -13.7(1.6) fm. A broad energy spectrum was found for the channel. Based on the assumption that the relative-energy spectrum is dominated by a correlated background presumably stemming from initial correlations in the 14Be ground-state, evidence for a 13Li resonance at 1.47(31) MeV above the threshold with a width around 2 MeV has been found.

  • Ingår i: Physics Letters, Section B: Nuclear, Elementary Particle and High-Energy Physics. - : Elsevier BV. - 0370-2693. ; 718:4-5, s. 1309-1313
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • One-neutron knockout reactions from Borromean nuclei are analyzed using a profile function analysis technique. The profile function, which is derived as the square root of the variance of the measured fragment + neutron momenta as a function of their relative energy, is shown to be very sensitive to the angular momentum of the knocked out neutron. Three cases are studied here: He-7, where the profile function analysis shows a presence of (s(1/2))(2) component in the He-8 ground-state wave-function, Li-10, where the presence of a 11(2)% d-wave contribution to the relative energy spectrum above 1.5 MeV is found and, finally, the presence of a major s contribution around 0.5 MeV relative energy in the Be-13 case and that the observed decay to the Be-12 2(+) state originates in a d state in Be-13.

  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Physics Letters B. - : Elsevier BV. - 0370-2693. ; 679:3, s. 191-196
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The unbound nucleus 7He, produced in neutron-knockout reactions with a 240 MeV/u 8He beam in a liquid-hydrogen target, has been studied in an experiment at the ALADIN-LAND setup at GSI. From an R-matrix analysis the resonance parameters for 7He as well as the spectroscopic factor for the 6He(0+) + n configuration in its ground-state have been obtained. The spectroscopic factor is 0.61 confirming that 7He is not a pure single-particle state. An analysis of 5He data from neutron-knockout reactions of 6He in a carbon target reveals the presence of an s-wave component at low energies in the α+n relative energy spectrum. A possible low-lying exited state in 7He observed in neutron knockout data from 8He in a carbon target and tentatively interpreted as a Iπ=1/2− state, could not be observed in the present experiment. Possible explanations of the shape difference between the 7He resonance obtained in the two knockout reactions are discussed in terms of target-dependence or different reaction mechanisms at relativistic energies.

  • Ingår i: Physical Review C - Nuclear Physics. - 2469-9985 .- 2469-9993. ; 87:6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • At the ALADIN-LAND setup at GSI the unbound nucleus Be-13 has been produced in one-neutron knockout reactions from a 304 MeV/nucleon relativistic beam of Be-14 ions impinging on a liquid hydrogen target. An analysis of the data including all available information about Be-13, and in particular recent data from a similar experiment performed at RIKEN, has been performed. A consistent description is reached. It is found that the excitation spectrum is dominated by s-waves at low energy, which solves problems from previous seemingly contradictory interpretations. A possible interference between two s-states in Be-13 is also discussed. The results indicate that the ground-state wave function of Be-14 is dominated by valence neutrons in the s-shell contributing with 60-75% of the total neutron knockout cross section.

  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - 1079-7114 .- 0031-9007. ; 111:24, s. article nr. 242501-

    • The coupling between bound quantum states and those in the continuum is of high theoretical interest. Experimental studies of bound drip-line nuclei provide ideal testing grounds for such investigations since they, due to the feeble binding energy of their valence particles, are easy to excite into the continuum. In this Letter, continuum states in the heaviest particle-stable Be isotope, Be14, are studied by employing the method of inelastic proton scattering in inverse kinematics. New continuum states are found at excitation energies E*=3.54(16) MeV and E*=5.25(19) MeV. The structure of the earlier known 21+ state at 1.54(13) MeV was confirmed with a predominantly (0d5/2)2 configuration while there is very clear evidence that the 22+ state has a predominant (1s1/2, 0d 5/2) structure with a preferential three-body decay mechanism. The region at about 7 MeV excitation shows distinct features of sequential neutron decay via intermediate states in Be13. This demonstrates that the increasing availability of energetic beams of exotic nuclei opens up new vistas for experiments leading towards a new understanding of the interplay between bound and continuum states. © 2013 American Physical Society.

    • A complete kinematics study of the B-10(He-3,p alpha alpha alpha) and B-11(He-3,d alpha alpha alpha) reactions has been performed to study the multi-particle break-up of C-12 resonances above the triple-alpha threshold. Four-particle coincidence detection gives us complete information on the direction and energy of the individual alpha particles from the decay of C-12, allowing us to extract new information on the structure of C-12 which we shall present in this contribution. We have observed gamma de-excitation of the T=1 15.11 MeV resonance using charged particle detectors, and have constructed Dalitz plots of the individual resonances in C-12 using the complete kinematics information of the alpha particles which come from their break-up.
