  • New shape minimum in Yb-160: Evidence for a triaxial, strongly deformed band
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C (Nuclear Physics). - 0556-2813. ; 77:2, s. 5-021302
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A high-spin rotational band was observed in the N=90 nucleus Yb-160 with moment of inertia and decay characteristics very similar to recently discovered sequences in Er-157,Er-158. These latter structures were discussed in terms of strongly deformed triaxial bands. Detailed cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky calculations were performed that predict that well-deformed triaxial structures are also expected at high spin in Yb-160. Within this interpretation the observed discontinuity in the dynamic moment of inertia around h omega=0.40-0.45 MeV can be explained as a crossing between i(13/2) neutron levels.

  • Single-particle and collective excitations in Ni-63
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C (Nuclear Physics). - 0556-2813. ; 88:5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A study of excited states in Ni-63 up to an excitation energy of 28 MeV and a probable spin of 57/2 was carried out with the Mg-26(Ca-48,2 alpha 3n gamma)Ni-63 reaction at beam energies between 275 and 320 MeV. Three collective bands, built upon states of single-particle character, were identified. For two of the three bands, the transition quadrupole moments were extracted, herewith quantifying the deformation at high spin. The results have been compared with shell-model and cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky calculations. Despite the Z = 28 shell closure and the approach to the purported N = 40 subshell, the Ni-63 isotope is able to sustain collective excitations at moderate and high spin.

  • Classification of Superdeformed Bands in the Mass A~60 Region
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Physics and Astrophysics. - : AIP. - 9780735406032 ; 1072, s. 211-214
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The experimental knowledge of the Cu-61(29)32 and Zn-61(30)31 nuclei has been largely extended via the joint results from three experiments. The fusion-evaporation reaction used a Ar-36 beam and a Si-28 target foil to produce the two nuclei via the evaporation of either three protons (Cu-61) or two protons and a neutron (Zn-61). The experimental set-ups comprised the Ge-array GAMMASPHERE as well as neutron and charged-particle detectors placed around the target position. The resulting level schemes include around ten rotational superdeformed structures in each isotope. Most of them are linked to normally deformed states and in many cases spins and parities of the low-lying states in each structure have been determined. The collective structures are compared with results from configuration dependent Cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky calculations. The different structures are in general well understood from the calculation but the results do also suggest modifications of the standard Nilsson parameters in the mass A similar to 60 region.

  • Comprehensive Gamma-ray Spectroscopy of Rotational Bands in the N=Z+1 Nucleus 61Zn
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C (Nuclear Physics). - 0556-2813. ; 79:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Zn-61(30)31 nucleus has been studied via the combined data of two fusion-evaporation reaction experiments using a Ar-36 beam and a Si-28 target foil. The experimental setups involved the Ge array GAMMASPHERE and neutron and charged particle detectors placed around the target position. The resulting level scheme comprises about 120 excited states connected via some 180 gamma-ray transitions. In total, seven rotational structures were identified up to I similar to 25 or higher and compared with predictions from cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky calculations.

  • Extensive Gamma-ray Spectroscopy of Normally and Superdeformed Structures in 61Cu
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal A. Hadrons and Nuclei. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-6001. ; 36:3, s. 251-278
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A largely extended experimental knowledge of the Cu-61(29)32 nucleus has been obtained from three experiments. Excited states in Cu-61 were produced via the fusion-evaporation reaction Si-28(Ar-36, 3p)Cu-61. In addition to the Ge array GAMMASPHERE, neutron and charged-particle detectors placed around the target position were used for high-performance particle spectroscopy. The constructed level scheme includes more than 160 energy levels and 320 gamma-ray transitions belonging to both normally deformed as well as superdeformed rotational structures. The multipolarities have been determined for the gamma-ray transitions and as a result spin-parity assignments are given for nearly all energy levels. Experimental results in the normally deformed region are compared with predictions from large-scale shell model calculations. The collective structures are compared with results from cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky calculations. The results reveal the need to modify the standard Nilsson parameters in the mass A similar to 60 region.

  • Competing Decay-out Mechanisms of the Yrast Superdeformed Band in 59Cu
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: AIP Conference Proceedings. - : AIP. - 1551-7616 .- 0094-243X. ; 701, s. 289-294
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This contribution reports on the decay-out of the yrast superdeformed band in 59Cu. It decays by multiple γ-ray transitions into low-spin spherical states in the first minimum of the nuclear potential in 59Cu, and, in competition, by emitting two prompt protons into a spherical state in 58Ni. For the first time in A ~ 60, the role of doorway states in the course of the decay-out is discussed

  • Doorway States in the Gamma Decay-out of the Yrast Superdeformed Band in 59Cu
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - 1079-7114. ; 91:23
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The decay-out process of the yrast superdeformed band in Cu-59 has been investigated. The firm determination of spin, parity, excitation energy, and configuration of the states involved in this process constitutes a unique situation for a detailed understanding of the decay-out mechanism. A theoretical model is introduced that includes a residual interaction and tunneling matrix element between bands, calculated in the configuration-dependent cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky model. This interaction causes the decay to occur via a small number of observed doorway states.

  • Evolution of Shapes in 59Cu
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal A. Hadrons and Nuclei. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-6001. ; 14:3, s. 317-348
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • High-spin states in Cu-59 were populated using the fusion-evaporation reaction Si-28 + Ca-40 at a beam energy of 122 MeV. The Gammasphere Ge-detector array in conjunction with the 4pi charged-particle detector array Microball allowed for the detection of gamma-rays in coincidence with evaporated light particles. The resulting extensive high-spin decay scheme of Cu-59 is presented, which comprises more than 320 gamma-ray transitions connecting about 150 excited states. Their spins and parities have been assigned via directional correlations of gamma-rays emitted from oriented states. Average quadrupole moments of rotational bands have been determined from the analysis of residual Doppler shifts. Shell model calculations in the fp shell are invoked to study some of the low-spin states, while the experimental characteristics of the rotational bands are analyzed in the configuration-dependent cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky (CNS) approach.

  • Yrast Superdeformed Band in 59Cu
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C (Nuclear Physics). - 0556-2813. ; 62:5, s. 513011-513015
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • High-spin states in 59Cu were populated using the fusion-evaporation reactions 28Si+40Ca at a beam energy of 125 MeV and 36Ar+28Si at a beam energy of 143 MeV. The Gammasphere array in conjunction with ancillary detector systems allowed for the identification of a superdeformed rotational band in 59Cu, which was firmly linked to low-spin yrast states. Using directional correlations of oriented states, a spin-parity assignment of Iπ = 25/2+ to the band head was possible. The average quadrupole moment of the band is measured to be Qt = (2.24±0.40) e b. The characteristics of the band are compared to neighboring nuclei and predictions of different mean-field theories.

  • Development of collective structures over noncollective excitations in Nd-139
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C (Nuclear Physics). - 0556-2813. ; 84:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • High-spin states in Nd-139 were investigated using the reaction Zr-96(Ca-48,5n) at a beam energy of 195 MeV and gamma-ray coincidences were acquired with the Euroball spectrometer. Apart from several dipole bands at medium excitation energy, three quadrupole bands have been observed at high spin. Linking transitions connecting two of the high-spin bands to low-energy states have been observed. Calculations based on the cranked-Nilsson-Strutinsky formalism have been used to assign configurations for the high-spin quadrupole bands.

  • Rotational structures and their evolution with spin in Gd-152
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C (Nuclear Physics). - 0556-2813. ; 75:6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The fusion-evaporation reaction involving a 175 MeV S-36 beam and a Sn-124 target was performed, and the emitted gamma rays were observed with the Gammasphere spectrometer. Significant additions to the level scheme of Gd-152 were made in spite of the relative weakness of the alpha 4n exit channel, being only similar to 2% of the total fusion cross-section. The high-spin behavior of Gd-152 was compared with that of other N=88 nuclei. A striking similarity was observed with Dy-154 and it is therefore suggested that the angular-momentum-induced shape changes that take place in Dy-154 also occur in Gd-152 in the 30-40h spin range. This is supported by Cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky calculations which were used to interpret the high-spin bands. It is found that a better agreement between calculation and experiment is obtained if the Z=64 shell gap increases with a decreasing number of valence particles outside the doubly-closed Gd-146(64)82 nucleus.

  • Triaxial shape with rotation around the longest principal axis in Gd-142
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C (Nuclear Physics). - 0556-2813. ; 78:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The cranking model is used to describe rotational bands. We investigate the approach of using diabatic configurations and minimizing the particle-number projected energy in a mesh of both lambda, Delta and deformation parameters. We use the method to interpret recent experimental data in Gd-142 and conclude that for the highest spin states observed (I approximate to 30), the nucleus is triaxial and builds spin by rotating around the classically unfavored longest axis.

  • Calculating the nuclear mass in the very high angular momentum regime
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C (Nuclear Physics). - 0556-2813. ; 74:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Macroscopic-microscopic methods are applied in the high-spin regime to calculate the nuclear binding energy ("mass") as a function of proton number, neutron number, and angular momentum. Masses at high spin are calculated using the cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky model together with two different liquid drop models, the Lublin-Strasbourg drop model and the finite range liquid drop model. When comparisons are made with experimental data, a similar agreement between theory and experiment is obtained as for ground-state masses.

  • Many-particles-plus-rotor description of magnetic bands at high spin
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C (Nuclear Physics). - 0556-2813. ; 74:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The high-spin parts of shears bands observed in Pb-198,Pb-199 are described by coupling several valence particles to a deformed rotor core. To give the model enough freedom so that both the proton and the neutron spin vectors can find their preferred direction, the use of five to six valence particles and holes is found to be necessary. Effective parameters characterizing the rotor are deduced from the cranking model. The method is described and results are presented concerning transition probabilities and energies in the high-spin regime for several rotational bands in Pb-199. The possible termination of the rotational bands is also discussed.

  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C (Nuclear Physics). - 0556-2813. ; 70:2

  • Seven-quasiparticle bands in Ce-139
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C (Nuclear Physics). - 0556-2813. ; 79:5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The high spin states in the Ce-139 nucleus have been studied by in-beam gamma-spectroscopic techniques using the reaction Te-130(C-12,3n)Ce-139 at E-beam=65 MeV. A gamma detector array, consisting of five Compton-suppressed Clover detectors was used for coincidence measurements. 15 new levels have been proposed and 28 new gamma transitions have been assigned to Ce-139 on the basis of gamma gamma coincidence data. The level scheme of Ce-139 has been extended above the known 70 ns 19/2 isomer up to similar to 6.1 MeV in excitation energy and 35/2h in spin. The spin-parity assignments for most of the newly proposed levels have been made using the deduced Directional Correlation from Oriented states of nuclei (DCO ratio) and the Polarization Directional Correlation from Oriented states (PDCO ratio) for the de-exciting transitions. The observed level structure has been compared with a large basis shell model calculation and also with the predictions from cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky (CNS) calculations. A general consistency has been observed between these two different theoretical approaches.
