  • Toward a minimal representation of aerosols in climate models : description and evaluation in the Community Atmosphere Model CAM5
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Geoscientific Model Development. - : Copernicus GmbH. - 1991-959X .- 1991-9603. ; 5:3, s. 709-739
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A modal aerosol module (MAM) has been developed for the Community Atmosphere Model version 5 (CAM5), the atmospheric component of the Community Earth System Model version 1 (CESM1). MAM is capable of simulating the aerosol size distribution and both internal and external mixing between aerosol components, treating numerous complicated aerosol processes and aerosol physical, chemical and optical properties in a physically-based manner. Two MAM versions were developed: a more complete version with seven lognormal modes (MAM7), and a version with three lognormal modes (MAM3) for the purpose of long-term (decades to centuries) simulations. In this paper a description and evaluation of the aerosol module and its two representations are provided. Sensitivity of the aerosol lifecycle to simplifications in the representation of aerosol is discussed. Simulated sulfate and secondary organic aerosol (SOA) mass concentrations are remarkably similar between MAM3 and MAM7. Differences in primary organic matter (POM) and black carbon (BC) concentrations between MAM3 and MAM7 are also small (mostly within 10 %). The mineral dust global burden differs by 10 % and sea salt burden by 30-40 % between MAM3 and MAM7, mainly due to the different size ranges for dust and sea salt modes and different standard deviations of the log-normal size distribution for sea salt modes between MAM3 and MAM7. The model is able to qualitatively capture the observed geographical and temporal variations of aerosol mass and number concentrations, size distributions, and aerosol optical properties. However, there are noticeable biases; e.g., simulated BC concentrations are significantly lower than measurements in the Arctic. There is a low bias in modeled aerosol optical depth on the global scale, especially in the developing countries. These biases in aerosol simulations clearly indicate the need for improvements of aerosol processes (e.g., emission fluxes of anthropogenic aerosols and precursor gases in developing countries, boundary layer nucleation) and properties (e.g., primary aerosol emission size, POM hygroscopicity). In addition, the critical role of cloud properties (e. g., liquid water content, cloud fraction) responsible for the wet scavenging of aerosol is highlighted.

  • Unsupervised context-aware user preference mining
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Proceeding of Workshop on Activity Context-Aware System Architectures at the 27th AAAI Conference on Artificial Intelligence. - 9781577356165 ; , s. 36-43
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In pervasive environments, users are situated in rich context and can interact with their surroundings through various services. To improve user experience in such environments, it is essential to find the services that satisfies user preferences in certain context. Thus the suitability of discovered services is highly dependent on how much the context-aware system can understand users' current context and preferred activities. In this paper, we propose an unsupervised learning solution for mining user preferences from the user's past context. To cope with the high dimensionality and heterogeneity of context data, we propose a subspace clustering approach that is able to find user preferences identified by different feature sets. The results of our approach are validated by a series of experiments.

  • Automatic description of context-altering services through observational learning
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Pervasive Computing. - Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin/Heidelberg. - 9783642312045 ; , s. 461-477
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Understanding the effect of pervasive services on user context is critical to many context-aware applications. Detailed descriptions of context-altering services are necessary, and manually adapting them to the local environment is a tedious and error-prone process. We present a method for automatically providing service descriptions by observing and learning from the behavior of a service with respect to its environment. By applying machine learning techniques on the observed behavior, our algorithms produce high quality localized service descriptions. In a series of experiments we show that our approach, which can be easily plugged into existing architectures, facilitates context-awareness without the need for manually added service descriptions.

  • Context-driven personalized service discovery in pervasive environments
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: World wide web (Bussum). - MA, USA : Kluwer Academic Publishers Hingham. - 1386-145X .- 1573-1413. ; 14:4, s. 295-319
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Pervasive environments are characterized by a large number of embedded devices offering their services to the user .Which of the available services are of most interest to the user considerably depends on the user’s current context. User context is often rich and very dynamic; making an explicit, user-driven discovery of services impractical. Users in such environments would instead like to be continuously informed about services relevant to them. Implicit discovery requests triggered by changes in the context are therefore prevalent. This paper proposes a proactiveservice discovery approach for pervasive environments addressing these implicit requests. Services and user preferences are described by a formal context modelcalled Hyperspace Analogue to Context, which effectively captures the dynamics of context and the relationship between services and context. Based on the model, we propose a set of algorithms that can continuously present the most relevant services to the user in response to changes of context, services or user preferences. Numeric coding methods are applied to improve the algorithms’ performance. The algorithms are grounded in a context-driven service discovery system that automatically reacts to changes in the environment. New context sources and services can be dynamically integrated into the system. A client for smart phones continuously informs users about the discovery results. Experiments show, that the system can efficiently provide the user with continuous, up-to-date information about the most useful services in real time.

  • An embedded middleware platform for pervasive and immersive environments for-all
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: 2009 6th IEEE Annual Communications Society Conference on Sensor, Mesh and Ad Hoc Communications and Networks Workshops, SECON Workshops 2009. - : IEEE. - 9781424439386 ; , s. 161-163
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Embedded systems are specialized computers used in larger systems or machines to control equipments such as automobiles, home appliances, communication, control and office machines. Such pervasivity is particularly evident in immersive realities, i.e., scenarios in which invisible embedded systems need to continuously interact with human users, in order to provide continuous sensed information and to react to service requests from the users themselves. The SM4All project investigates an innovative middleware platform for inter-working of smart embedded services in immersive and person-centric environments, through the use of composability and semantic techniques for dynamic service reconfiguration. This is applied to the challenging scenario of private houses and home-care assistance in presence of users with different abilities and needs (e.g., young, able-bodied, aged and disabled). This paper presentes a brief overview of the SM4All system architecture.

  • Reconciling and Improving Formulations for Thermodynamics and Conservation Principles in Earth System Models (ESMs)
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of Advances in Modeling Earth Systems. - 1942-2466. ; 14:9
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper provides a comprehensive derivation of the total energy equations for the atmospheric components of Earth System Models (ESMs). The assumptions and approximations made in this derivation are motivated and discussed. In particular, it is emphasized that closing the energy budget is conceptually challenging and hard to achieve in practice without resorting to ad hoc fixers. As a concrete example, the energy budget terms are diagnosed in a realistic climate simulation using a global atmosphere model. The largest total energy errors in this example are spurious dynamical core energy dissipation, thermodynamic inconsistencies (e.g., coupling parameterizations with the host model) and missing processes/terms associated with falling precipitation and evaporation (e.g., enthalpy flux between components). The latter two errors are not, in general, reduced by increasing horizontal resolution. They are due to incomplete thermodynamic and dynamic formulations. Future research directions are proposed to reconcile and improve thermodynamics formulations and conservation principles.

  • High levels of kappa free light chain synthesis predict cognitive decline in relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: FRONTIERS IN IMMUNOLOGY. - : Frontiers Media SA. - 1664-3224. ; 14
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BackgroundEvolving evidence suggests that measurement of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) kappa free light chain (KFLC) synthesis has high diagnostic sensitivity and specificity for multiple sclerosis (MS), but its prognostic ability is less investigated. The usefulness of KFLC in predicting cognitive impairment (CI) is still unknown. MethodsIn a monocentric longitudinal retrospecitve cohort study, KFLC-index ([CSF KFLC/serum KFLC]/[CSF albumin/serum albumin]) measured by latex-enhanced immunonephelometry was prospectively determined as part of the diagnostic workup in patients with early relapsing-remitting MS (RRMS, n=77). The ability of KFLC-index to predict information processing speed (IPS) worsening as assessed with the symbol digit modalities test (SDMT) was investigated in univariable and multivariable models. ResultsIn patients with KFLC-index>100 (n=31), 11 subjects (35.5%) showed reduced SDMT scores by >= 8 points at follow-up (mean follow-up time 7.3 +/- 2.6 years), compared with their baseline scores (p=0.01). Baseline KFLC-index>100 was strongly associated with a higher hazard of SDMT score reduction at follow-up (adjusted hazard ratio 10.5, 95% confidence interval 2.2-50.8, p=0.003; median time to SDMT reduction 7 years). ConclusionIntrathecal KFLC synthesis has become an attractive diagnostic tool for MS. We show for the first time that in a real-world setting of early RRMS, KFLC-index predicted cognitive decline. Whether this predictive ability of KFLC-index also concerns other cognitive domains than IPS, warrants further investigations.

  • Increased intrathecal neurofilament light and immunoglobulin M predict severe disability in relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Frontiers in Immunology. - : Frontiers Media SA. - 1664-3224. ; 13
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BackgroundEmerging evidence supports that determination of intrathecal immunoglobulin M (IgM) synthesis (ITMS) and neurofilament light (NfL) concentration in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) may be clinically useful as disease severity biomarkers in relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS). MethodsMonocentric observational longitudinal cohort study in which prospectively collected data were retrospectively retrieved. Included were patients with RRMS (n=457) who had a diagnostic investigation including analysis of ITMS and CSF neurofilament light (cNfL). ITMS was calculated with the linear index formula, the intrathecal fraction of IgM according to Reiber (IgM(IF)), and by qualitative determination of oligoclonal IgM bands (OCMB). Univariable and multivariable models were performed to predict Evidence of Disease Activity-3 (EDA-3) status within 24 months from onset, and the risk of Expanded Disability Status Score (EDSS) >= 3 and >= 6. ResultsAll investigated methods to calculate ITMS significantly predicted evidence of disease activity (EDA-3) within 24 months. IgM(IF)>0% showed the strongest association with EDA-3 status (adjusted hazard ratio [aHR] 3.7, 95%CI 2.7-5, p<0.001). Combining IgM-index>0.1 or OCMB with increased cNfL were strong predictors of EDSS >= 3 (for cNfL(+)/IgM-index(+): aHR 4.6, 95%CI 2.6-8.2, p<0.001) and EDSS >= 6 (aHR 8.2, 95%CI 2.3-30, p<0.001). ConclusionsIn a real-world setting, ITMS was a useful biomarker in early RRMS to predict disabling MS and its prognostic value was even stronger in combination with cNfL. Our data suggest that determination of ITMS and cNfL should be included in the diagnostic work-up of RRMS for prognostic purposes and in decisions of disease-modifying therapy.

  • Kappa free light chain index as a diagnostic biomarker in multiple sclerosis: A real-world investigation
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Journal of Neurochemistry. - : Wiley. - 0022-3042 .- 1471-4159. ; 159:3, s. 618-628
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Kappa free light chain (KFLC) index, a measure for intrathecal production of free kappa chains, has been increasingly recognized for its diagnostic potential in multiple sclerosis (MS) as a quantitative alternative to IgG oligoclonal bands (OCBs). Our objective was to investigate the sensitivity, specificity, and overall diagnostic accuracy of KFLC index in MS. KFLC index was prospectively determined as part of the diagnostic workup in patients with suspected MS (n = 327) between May 2013 and February 2020. Patients with clinically isolated syndrome (CIS), radiologically isolated syndrome (RIS), and MS had markedly higher KFLC index (44.6, IQR 16-128) compared with subjects with other neuro-inflammatory disorders (ONID) and symptomatic controls (SC) (2.19, IQR 1.68-2.98, p < 0.001). KFLC index had a sensitivity of 0.93 (95% CI 0.88-0.95) and specificity of 0.87 (95% CI 0.8-0.92) to discriminate CIS/RIS/MS from ONID and SC (AUC 0.94, 95% CI 0.91-0.97, p < 0.001). KFLC index and intrathecal fraction (IF) KFLC had similar accuracies to detect MS. Treatment with disease-modifying therapy (DMT) did not influence the level of KFLC index and it was not affected by demographic factors or associated with degenerative or inflammatory biomarkers in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). KFLC index in MS diagnostics has methodological advantages compared to OCB and is independent to subjective interpretation. Moreover, it is an attractive diagnostic tool since the diagnostic specificity and sensitivity of KFLC index are similar with that of OCBs and KFLCIF and better than for IgG index. We show that KFLC index was influenced neither by DMT nor by demographic factors or other inflammatory or degenerative processes in MS as determined by biomarkers in CSF.

  • Tropical and Subtropical Cloud Transitions in Weather and Climate Prediction Models : The GCSS/WGNE Pacific Cross-Section Intercomparison (GPCI)
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Journal of Climate. - 0894-8755 .- 1520-0442. ; 24:20, s. 5223-5256
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A model evaluation approach is proposed in which weather and climate prediction models are analyzed along a Pacific Ocean cross section, from the stratocumulus regions off the coast of California, across the shallow convection dominated trade winds, to the deep convection regions of the ITCZ-the Global Energy and Water Cycle Experiment Cloud System Study/Working Group on Numerical Experimentation (GCSS/WGNE) Pacific Cross-Section Intercomparison (GPCI). The main goal of GPCI is to evaluate and help understand and improve the representation of tropical and subtropical cloud processes in weather and climate prediction models. In this paper, a detailed analysis of cloud regime transitions along the cross section from the subtropics to the tropics for the season June-July-August of 1998 is presented. This GPCI study confirms many of the typical weather and climate prediction model problems in the representation of clouds: underestimation of clouds in the stratocumulus regime by most models with the corresponding consequences in terms of shortwave radiation biases; overestimation of clouds by the 40-yr ECMWF Re-Analysis (ERA-40) in the deep tropics (in particular) with the corresponding impact in the outgoing longwave radiation; large spread between the different models in terms of cloud cover, liquid water path and shortwave radiation; significant differences between the models in terms of vertical cross sections of cloud properties (in particular), vertical velocity, and relative humidity. An alternative analysis of cloud cover mean statistics is proposed where sharp gradients in cloud cover along the GPCI transect are taken into account. This analysis shows that the negative cloud bias of some models and ERA-40 in the stratocumulus regions [as compared to the first International Satellite Cloud Climatology Project (ISCCP)] is associated not only with lower values of cloud cover in these regimes, but also with a stratocumulus-to-cumulus transition that occurs too early along the trade wind Lagrangian trajectory. Histograms of cloud cover along the cross section differ significantly between models. Some models exhibit a quasi-bimodal structure with cloud cover being either very large (close to 100%) or very small, while other models show a more continuous transition. The ISCCP observations suggest that reality is in-between these two extreme examples. These different patterns reflect the diverse nature of the cloud, boundary layer, and convection parameterizations in the participating weather and climate prediction models.

  • The hydrological impact of geoengineering in the Geoengineering Model Intercomparison Project (GeoMIP)
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Journal of Geophysical Research. - : American Geophysical Union (AGU). - 0148-0227 .- 2156-2202 .- 2169-897X. ; 118:19, s. 11036-11058
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    •  The hydrological impact of enhancing Earth's albedo by solar radiation management is investigated using simulations from 12 Earth System models contributing to the Geoengineering Model Intercomparison Project (GeoMIP). We contrast an idealized experiment, G1, where the global mean radiative forcing is kept at preindustrial conditions by reducing insolation while the CO2 concentration is quadrupled to a 4×CO2 experiment. The reduction of evapotranspiration over land with instantaneously increasing CO2 concentrations in both experiments largely contributes to an initial reduction in evaporation. A warming surface associated with the transient adjustment in 4×CO2 generates an increase of global precipitation by around 6.9% with large zonal and regional changes in both directions, including a precipitation increase of 10% over Asia and a reduction of 7% for the North American summer monsoon. Reduced global evaporation persists in G1 with temperatures close to preindustrial conditions. Global precipitation is reduced by around 4.5%, and significant reductions occur over monsoonal land regions: East Asia (6%), South Africa (5%), North America (7%), and South America (6%). The general precipitation performance in models is discussed in comparison to observations. In contrast to the 4×CO2 experiment, where the frequency of months with heavy precipitation intensity is increased by over 50% in comparison to the control, a reduction of up to 20% is simulated in G1. These changes in precipitation in both total amount and frequency of extremes point to a considerable weakening of the hydrological cycle in a geoengineered world.
