    • “Show, don’t tell” is common advice for writers of fiction. This advice is meant to encourage authors to illustrate rather than to directly state information about environments and feelings. For instance, instead of writing “she was angry,” they would write “she left the room with steady steps and slammed the door behind her,” which illustrates anger. When supervising students, I use this advice and the analogy to fiction writing, albeit in an altered version: “show and tell.”

    • Place branding is defined as “the development of brands for geographic locationswith the aim of triggering positive associations about the area and distinguishinga place from other places” (Stevens et al., 2020, p. 752). Like all occupations,place branding is organised by discourses, or talk, that determine best practices andnorms about what constitutes expertise (Loacker and Sullivan, 2016). Exploringplace-branding discourses is important because it offers insights into what constitutesideal place-branding practices and who gets to say what these practices are.This is particularly important given that place branding influences places in waysthat impact citizens and other stakeholders.Extant literature argues that branding experts are the authoritative charactersand most prominent trend-setters in the place branding field (Anholt, 2008; Cleaveet al., 2019; de Noronha et al., 2017; McCann and Ward, 2012). Far from simplybeing arbiters of logos or slogans, branding professionals are “often understood asthe leading actors that influence local and national governments in (re)allocatingresources and deploying specific image-related policies” (Goulart-Sztejnberg andGiovanardi, 2017, p. 425). As such, they have significant influence on the discoursesof place branding and they set the stage for what constitutes good brandingwork (Hardy and Maguire, 2010).Despite their importance, few studies specifically explore branding experts,what they consider desirable and legitimate branding, or the advice they give to cities(for exceptions, see Aronczyk, 2008; Bertilsson et al., 2020; Hankinson, 2010).That said, critical scholars warn that given the complexities inherent in managingplaces, relying on experts from outside of city governance or general formulasfor how to work with places might be less ideal than relying on the expertise andintuitions of city managers (Anholt, 2008; Aronczyk, 2008). A general concern isthat branders might focus only on selling the right image or identity of a place, inessence by focusing on redressing rather than by bringing in-depth knowledge ofplace governance and management (de Noronha et al., 2017).We seek to add to studies of place branding from a critical lens by payingattention to place branding experts’ speech and interactions in a professional setting— a place-branding conference—to explore how they construct an everyday or common-sense view of what constitutes “good” place branding. Based on our analysis of place branders’ talk to each other at a place branding conference, we develop a model of “good” place branding, consisting of four ideal types: totemic, artistic, mimetic, and platformic.In the chapter, we review literature on place branding and its affinity with the tenets of corporate branding. We then detail our qualitative methodology and proceed by outlining our inductively developed typology of good place branding. Finally, we elaborate on how following these ideal types might negatively impact cities, arguing that a dogmatic use of them may lead to a homogenisation of places and a separation between cities’ empirical conditions and their branded image.

    • Public institutions such as cities, the police or schools are increasingly adopting a brand orientation, understood as an approach to organization aiming to create coherence around image and identity, such that consistent, precise and coherent messages can be presented about the organization to internal and external stakeholders. This may be seen as an expression of what is sometimes called “brand society,” meaning that branding affects ever more aspects of human life, including public sector organizations (Kornberger, 2010). Similar to other management techniques – like Lean Management or TQM – branding has its roots in private organizations. Although private and public organizations may gain from exchanging management practices, it also creates tensions between corporate and civic rationales and practices. For instance, whereas the corporate branding ideal is to seek to reduce complexity via a coherent or unified identity and presentation to customers, public organizations are complex and must communicate with and serve a diverse public (Wæraas, 2008). In the wake of this development toward brand orientation, it is important to understand intended and unintended consequences for organizations, public employees, citizens and other stakeholders.

  • Mimicry and artistry: Place branders' construction of "good" branding

    • Many public organizations think of themselves as brands and engage in branding to increase their attractiveness. Often this is seen as a good practice, but this paper takes a more skeptical view and interrogates the value of place branding expertise for public organizations. Through observation of a place branding conference, drawing on some principles from ethnomethodology, this paper provides clues to what the place branding profession constructs as “good” and legitimate expertise and the norms that guide their work. We identified two levels of legitimate place branding expertise: Mimicry and Artistry. Mimicry signifies imitation of already institutionalized ideas and practices, and proficiency in supplying beautiful yet detached and superficial representations of cities. Artistry refers to place branding that stands out as brilliant and inventive, encompassing unexpected play with symbols and creative combination of branding models. We argue that both these levels of expertise may be at odds with civic values of city government such as inclusion and representativeness. Our study concludes that the ways in which the branders construct expertise risks deflecting attention from the core problems of a place or a city and separating place branding from city management practice.

  • The destructive side of branding : A heuristic model for analyzing the value of branding practice

    • Scholarship on branding has made important contributions in terms of the value-creating function of branding. However, previous literature has overemphasized the creation of value for organizations at the expense of an understanding of the destructive side of branding for organizations and society. Drawing on the work of Boltanski and Thevénot, we theorize value as different in separate ‘worlds of worth’ and offer a competing approach, arguing that the organizational practice of branding simultaneously and inevitably involves value-destructive aspects. In addition, to enable analysis of these value-destructive aspects, we argue that new understandings of what branding is are needed, and therefore, we introduce two new metaphors: branding as discursive closure and branding as hypocrisy. Based on these conceptual developments, the article offers a heuristic model for analyzing how, and what types of, value may be destroyed in organizational branding practice. We thereby contribute with a critical understanding of organizational branding that acknowledges the conflictual relationship between value regimes and enables a balanced analysis of the social consequences of branding.

    • This conceptual chapter investigates how knowledge moves across different “social fields” (Bourdieu, 2005b). We propose a certain social Gestalt new knowledge discussion creates the dialogically constructed antenarrative field. An antenarrative field is a social space for knowledge exchange where agents speculate on future scenarios’ potential for realization, and our notion of the antenarrative field helps understanding how knowledge gains recognition en route from one field to the other.We illustrate our idea of the antenarrative field by observing the persuasion efforts by the Scandinavian NGO PRODegrowth. This NGO, a lowly positioned player in the political field, promotes economic degrowth to business agents, representing the “economic field” (Bourdieu, 2005b) where growth is imperative.The encounter of executives and activists constructs the antenarrative field as a new social space. We combine Boje’s thinking tool of antenarrative (Boje, 2008), a story that might turn recognized in the future, and Bourdieusian field theory. The antenarrative field emerges by means of discussing the realistic reachability of degrowth and is thus being constructed as a potential diffusion hub for further organizations and fields not yet involved in the discussion.Reachability talk hinges on how well agents can promote their knowledge and is the condition for knowledge travel between different agents and fields. Reachability talk is a means for agents to convey their knowledge to other groups, especially when holding an inferior position in terms of social power. The assumption that reachability might be a main criterion for the successful travel of storied knowledge has societal implications: not only is this criterion hinged on the support of the powerful (reachability is framed according to economic parameters), it might also hinder knowledge travel not conforming to possible business applications.

    • Is there an easy way to analyze interviews, observations and documents? The answer is no. Analytical work is notoriously multilayered and there is undoubtedly more than one approach. But this book shows how it can go more smoothly. The authors maintain that all analysis involves three activities: sorting, reducing and arguing. If the researcher or student can sort and organize the material, cut out what is irrelevant (or “zoom out” from what is peripheral) and formulate an argument based on the material – well, then they have a good chance of succeeding. These three steps make it easier to walk the winding but exciting road from material to manuscript. The book discusses analytical craftsmanship and its ambition to theorize. The authors’ aim is that their sound advice and illustrative examples will infuse enthusiasm into the creative analytical work.

Vi belyser tre grundläggande arbetssätt för att skapa samhällsvetenskapliga analyser: att sortera, att reducera och att argumentera. Det rör sig om tre handlingar som bemöter tre problem och försöker gör dem hanterbara. Att sortera empiri bemöter vad man skulle kunna kalla kaosproblemet, det vill säga problem med oöverskådlighet och oordning. Att reducera empiri bemöter representationsproblemet, det vill säga omöjligheten i att "visa allt" och därmed representera fältet eller materialet i dess helhet. Att argumentera, slutligen, bemöter auktoritetsproblemet, det vill säga problemet med att göra sig hörd i forskar- och kunskapssamhället.

    • In this article we analyze the initial phase (2004–2006) in the establishmentof the vocational degree of ’civilekonom’ [literally: ‘civil economist’] as aprocess of professionalization. Drawing upon ideas from discourse analysis,we investigate texts produced by ’Civilekonomerna’ [the union of economicsand business graduates], ’Lagstiftaren’ [the legislature], and the expert panelof the assessment process where some universities were granted the right toissue the degree of ’civilekonom’. The study shows that the establishmentof ‘civilekonom’ as a vocational degree follows a selective, market baseddiscourse, rather than a resource based one, which is quite unique in thecontext of professionalization. Our conclusion is that the establishment of‘civilekonom’ exemplifies one way in which a profession may undermineits own source of legitimacy by aiming to satisfy selected recipients, andtrying to sell its services on a market where it initially lacks competitiveadvantage. The article ends by pointing at potential long-term problemswith a selectively market based professionalization. We conclude the articlewith a discussion of the value of a ‘civil ekonom’ in light of the role of themodern university in society.
