  • Composition tunable Al1-xInxN nanorod arrays grown by ultra-high-vacuum magnetron sputter epitaxy
  • 2011
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Self-assembled ternary Al1-xInxN nanorod arrays with variable In concentration, 0.10 ≤ x ≤ 0.32 have been realized onto c-plane sapphire substrates by ultra-high-vacuum magnetron sputter epitaxy with Ti0.21Zr0.79N or VN seed layers assistance. The formation of nanorods was very sensitive to the applied seed layer. Without proper seed layer assistance a continuous Al1-xInxN film was grown. The nanorods exhibit hexagonal crosssections with preferential growth along the c axis. A coaxial rod structure with higher In concentration in the core was observed by (scanning) transmission electron microscopy in combination with low-loss electron energy loss spectroscopy and energy dispersive xray spectroscopy. 5 K cathodoluminescence spectroscopy of Al0.86In0.14N nanorods revealed band edge emission at ~5.46 eV, which was accompanied by a strong defectrelated emission at ~ 3.38 eV.

  • MRI Lymph Node Evaluation for Prediction of Metastases in Rectal Cancer
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Anticancer Research. - : International Institute of Anticancer Research. - 0250-7005 .- 1791-7530. ; 40:5, s. 2757-2763
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Aim: To explore whether the size and characteristics of the largest regional lymph node in patients with rectal cancer, based on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), following neoadjuvant therapy and before surgery, is able to identify patients at high risk of developing metachronous metastases.Patients and Methods: A retrospective case–control study with data from the Swedish Colo-Rectal Cancer Registry. Forty patients were identified with metachronous metastases (M+), and 40 patients without metastases (M0) were matched as controls. Results: Patients with M+ disease were more likely to have a regional lymph node measuring ≥5 mm than patients with M0. (87% vs. 65%, p=0.02). There was also a significant difference between the groups regarding the presence of an irregular border of the largest lymph node (68% vs. 40%, p=0.01).Conclusion: Lymph nodes measuring ≥5 mm with/without displaying irregular borders at MRI performed after neoadjuvant therapy emerged as risk factors for metachronous metastases in patients with rectal cancer. Intensified follow-up programmes may be indicated in these patients.

  • Impact of post-hepatectomy liver failure on morbidity and short- and long-term survival after major hepatectomy
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: BJS Open. - : Oxford University Press. - 2474-9842. ; 6:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background Post-hepatectomy liver failure (PHLF) is one of the most serious postoperative complications after hepatectomy. The aim of this study was to assess the impact of the International Study Group of Liver Surgery (ISGLS) definition of PHLF on morbidity and short- and long-term survival after major hepatectomy. Methods This was a retrospective review of all patients who underwent major hepatectomy (three or more liver segments) for various liver tumours between 2010 and 2018 at two Swedish tertiary centres for hepatopancreatobiliary surgery. Descriptive statistics, regression models, and survival analyses were used. Results A total of 799 patients underwent major hepatectomy, of which 218 patients (27 per cent) developed ISGLS-defined PHLF, including 115 patients (14 per cent) with ISGLS grade A, 76 patients (10 per cent) with grade B, and 27 patients (3 per cent) with grade C. The presence of cirrhosis, perihilar cholangiocarcinoma, and gallbladder cancer, right-sided hemihepatectomy and trisectionectomy all significantly increased the risk of clinically relevant PHLF (grades B and C). Clinically relevant PHLF increased the risk of 90-day mortality and was associated with impaired long-term survival. ISGLS grade A had more major postoperative complications compared with no PHLF but failed to be an independent predictor of both 90-day mortality and long-term survival. The impact of PHLF grade B/C on long-term survival was no longer present in patients surviving the first 90 days after surgery. Conclusions The presently used ISGLS definition for PHLF should be reconsidered regarding mortality as only PHLF grade B/C was associated with a negative impact on short-term survival; however, even ISGLS grade A had clinical implications. The aim was to assess the ISGLS criteria for post-hepatectomy liver failure (PHLF) in a cohort of patients with major hepatectomy. The presently used ISGLS definition for PHLF should be reconsidered regarding mortality as only PHLF grade B/C was associated with a negative impact on short-term survival.

  • Between protocol and reality : Swedish municipal comprehensive planning
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: European Planning Studies. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0965-4313 .- 1469-5944. ; 26:1, s. 35-54
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Spatial planning using a landscape approach has been recognized as being essential for reconciling ecological, cultural and socioeconomic dimensions in sustainable development (SuD). Although embraced as a concept, there is a lack of planning tools capable of incorporating multi-level, multifunctional and multi-sectoral perspectives, especially in a rural context. The departure point in this paper is the legal requirements for municipal comprehensive planning (MCP) in Sweden and an e-mail survey about incentives, stakeholder involvement, policy integration and implementation in MCP in all 15 Swedish mountain municipalities. The purpose of this explorative study is to examine whether MCP could be a tool in planning for SuD. Results indicate a general lack of resources and a low status of MCP that affect, and even limit, stakeholder involvement, policy integration and implementation. However, legal requirements for MCP are targeted at SuD, and municipal personnel responsible for planning appreciate the potential of MCP. Therefore, there is potential to develop the MCP into an effective landscape planning tool. To accomplish this, the status of an active planning process has to be raised, the mandate of the local planning agency has to be secured, and residents and land users have to be involved throughout the planning process.

  • Conventional, but not remote ischemic preconditioning, reduces iNOS transcription in liver ischemia/reperfusion
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: World Journal of Gastroenterology. - : Baishideng Publishing Group Co. Limited. - 1007-9327 .- 2219-2840. ; 20:28, s. 9506-9512
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • AIM: To study the effects of preconditioning on inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and interleukin 1 (IL-1) receptor transcription in rat liver ischemia/reperfusion injury (IRI). METHODS: Seventy-two male rats were randomized into 3 groups: the one-hour segmental ischemia (IRI, n = 24) group, the ischemic preconditioning (IPC, n = 24) group or the remote ischemic preconditioning (R-IPC, n = 24) group. The IPC and R-IPC were performed as 10 min of ischemia and 10 min of reperfusion. The iNOS and the IL-1 receptor mRNA in the liver tissue was analyzed with real time PCR. The total Nitrite and Nitrate (NOx) in continuously sampled microdialysate (MD) from the liver was analyzed. In addition, the NOx levels in the serum were analyzed. RESULTS: After 4 h of reperfusion, the iNOS mRNA was significantly higher in the R-IPC (Delta Ct: 3.44 +/- 0.57) group than in the IPC (Delta Ct: 5.86 +/- 0.82) group (P = 0.025). The IL-1 receptor transcription activity was reduced in the IPC group (Delta Ct: 1.88 +/- 0.53 to 4.81 +/- 0.21), but not in the R-IPC group, during reperfusion (P = 0.027). In the MD, a significant drop in the NOx levels was noted in the R-IPC group (12.3 +/- 2.2 to 4.7 +/- 1.2 mu mol/L) at the end of ischemia compared with the levels in early ischemia (P = 0.008). A similar trend was observed in the IPC group (11.8 +/- 2.1 to 6.4 +/- 1.5 mu mol/L), although this difference was not statistically significant. The levels of NOx rose quickly during reperfusion in both groups. CONCLUSION: IPC, but not R-IPC, reduces iNOS and IL-1 receptor transcription during early reperfusion, indicating a lower inflammatory reaction. NOx is consumed in the ischemic liver lobe.

  • Methods to Reduce Liver Ischemia/Reperfusion Injury
  • 2014
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Introduction: During the last two decades, liver surgery has expanded enormously, partly due to improved surgical equipment and techniques as well as new and more powerful chemotherapy agents. As the liver is a very well-vascularized organ, there is an inherent risk of bleeding during liver resection. One of the most popular methods employed to reduce this risk is to close the vascular inflow to the liver using the Pringle’s maneuver (PM). However, this procedure has been recognized to cause ischemia/reperfusion injury (IRI) to the future liver remnant (FLR). In cases of extensive resection where the FLR is small and in cases when the liver suffers from chronic diseases, such as cirrhosis, IRI can greatly increase the risk of post-operative liver failure (POLF). Ischemic preconditioning (IPC) and, more recently, remote ischemic preconditioning (R-IPC) are methods that have been employed to reduce IRI.Aim: 1) To compare the effects of IPC and R-IPC in a rat model; 2) to investigate the clinical effect of IPC during modern liver surgery; 3) to investigate the role of the nitric oxide (NO) system in IRI, IPC and R-IPC; and 4) to explore the possible protective effects of nitrite administration before IRI.Methods: A rat model of segmental ischemia followed by 4 hours of reperfusion including microdialysis (μD) was developed from earlier models. The effects of IPC and R-IPC were compared using transaminases and histology as well as continuous μD sampling for glucose, pyruvate, lactate and glycerol. The role of the NO system was examined by serum and μD measurements of NOx as well as tissue measurements of iNOS mRNA and IL-1R mRNA. In study II, patients were randomized to IPC or no IPC prior to liver resection, where intermittent PM was used to decrease bleeding. Results: IPC was more effective in protecting the liver against IRI than R-IPC, as indicated by the levels of transaminases. Lower lactate levels were detected in patients treated with IPC before major liver resections than in controls. IPC reduced iNOS mRNA transcription during reperfusion; this result may be related to the early but not sustained increases in IL-1R transcription observed in the IPC group. Nitrite administered before ischemia reduced AST and ALT levels in the level after 4 hours of reperfusion; in addition, necrosis and glycerol release from the ischemic liver were reduced as well. Conclusion: IPC is more effective than R-IPC in animal models; however, this effect is unlikely to be of clinical importance. NOx decreases in the ischemic liver and the administration of nitrite before ischemia reduces IRI in rats. This may have clinical implications in the future.

  • Remote or Conventional Ischemic Preconditioning -Local Liver Metabolism in Rats Studied with Microdialysis
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Journal of Surgical Research. - : Elsevier. - 0022-4804 .- 1095-8673. ; 176:1, s. 55-62
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background. Ischemic preconditioning (IPC) of the liver decreases liver injury secondary to ischemia and reperfusion. An attractive alternative to IPC is remote ischemic preconditioning (R-IPC), but these two methods have not previously been compared. Material and Methods. Eighty-seven rats were randomized into four groups: sham operated (n = 15), 1 h segmental ischemia (IRI, n = 24), preceeded by IPC (n = 24), or R-IPC (n = 24) (to the left hindleg). IPC and R-IPC were performed with 10 min ischemia and 10 min of reperfusion. Analyses of liver microdialysate (MD), serum transaminase levels, and liver histology were made. Results. Rats treated with IPC and R-IPC had significantly lower AST, 71.5 (19.6) IU/L respective 96.6 (12.4) at 4 h reperfusion than those subjected to IRI alone, 155 (20.9), P = 0.0004 and P = 0.04 respectively. IPC also had lower ALT levels, 41.6 (11.3) IU/L than had IRI 107.4 (15.5), P = 0.003. The MD glycerol was significantly higher during ischemia in the R-IPC = 759 (84) mu M] and the IRI = 732 (67)] groups than in the IPC 514 (70) group, P = 0.022 and P = 0.046 respectively. The MD glucose after ischemia was lower in the IPC group 7.1 (1.2) than in the IRI group 12.7 (1.6), P = 0.005. Preconditioning to the liver caused an direct increase in lactate, glucose and glycerol in the ischemic segment compared with the control segment an effect not seen in the R-IPC and IRI groups. Conclusions. IPC affects glucose metabolism in the rat liver, observed with MD. IPC reduces liver cell injury during ischemic and reperfusion in rats. R-IPC performed over the same length of time as IPC does not have the same effect as the latter on ALT levels and MD glycerol; this may suggest that R-IPC does not offer the same protection as IPC in this setting of rat liver IRI.

  • Preclinical Characterization of Acyl Sulfonimidamides : Potential Carboxylic Acid Bioisosteres with Tunable Properties
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: ChemMedChem. - : Wiley. - 1860-7179 .- 1860-7187. ; 10:3, s. 455-460
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Herein we present the preclinical characterization of novel compounds containing the linear acyl sulfonimidamide functionality. Specifically, we studied the pK(a), lipophilicity, in vitro metabolic stability, plasma protein binding, Caco-2 permeability, and aqueous solubility for nine aryl acyl sulfonimidamides. In comparison with widely used carboxylic acid bioisosteres, the acyl sulfonimidamides were found to be less acidic and more lipophilic depending on the substitution pattern in the studied compounds. Importantly, the pKa values (5.9-7.6) were significantly influenced by substituents on the nitrogen atom and the aryl substituents. Moreover, the acyl sulfonimidamides displayed membrane permeabilities ranging from moderate to very high, which correlated with decreased pKa and low to negligible efflux ratios. We foresee that the chiral sulfur center and the two handles for structural diversity of linear acyl sulfonimidamides will offer new opportunities for drug design and for improving the oral bioavailability of acidic drug candidates.

  • Cell culture and Drosophila model systems define three classes of anaplastic lymphoma kinase mutations in neuroblastoma.
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Disease models & mechanisms. - Cambridge, UK : The Company of Biologists. - 1754-8411 .- 1754-8403. ; 6:2, s. 373-82
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Neuroblastoma is a childhood extracranial solid tumor which is associated with a number of genetic changes. Included in these genetic alterations are mutations in the kinase domain of the Anaplastic Lymphoma Kinase (ALK) receptor tyrosine kinase (RTK), which have been found in both somatic and familial neuroblastoma. In order to treat patients accordingly required characterisation of these mutations in terms of their response to ALK tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs). Here, we report the identification and characterisation of two novel neuroblastoma ALK mutations (A1099T and 1464STOP) which we have investigated together with several previously reported but uncharacterised ALK mutations (T1087I, D1091N, T1151M, M1166R, F1174I and A1234T). In order to understand the potential role of these ALK mutations in neuroblastoma progression we have employed cell culture based systems together with the model organism Drosophila as a readout for ligand-independent activity. Mutation of ALK at position F1174I generates a gain-of-function receptor capable of activating intracellular targets, such as ERK (extracellular signal regulated kinase) and STAT3 (signal transducer and activator of transcription 3) in a ligand independent manner. Analysis of these previously uncharacterised ALK mutants and comparison with ALK(F1174) mutants suggests that ALK mutations observed in neuroblastoma fall into three classes. These are: (i) gain-of-function ligand independent mutations such as ALK(F1174), (ii) kinase-dead ALK mutants, e.g. ALK(I1250T)(Schonherr et al 2011a) or (iii) ALK mutations which are ligand-dependent in nature. Irrespective of the nature of the observed ALK mutants, in every case the activity of the mutant ALK receptors could be abrogated by the ALK inhibitor crizotinib (PF-02341066, Xalkori), albeit with differing levels of sensitivity.

  • The Swedish childhood tumor biobank : systematic collection and molecular characterization of all pediatric CNS and other solid tumors in Sweden
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of Translational Medicine. - : BioMed Central (BMC). - 1479-5876. ; 21
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Swedish Childhood Tumor Biobank (BTB) is a nonprofit national infrastructure for collecting tissue samples and genomic data from pediatric patients diagnosed with central nervous system (CNS) and other solid tumors. The BTB is built on a multidisciplinary network established to provide the scientific community with standardized biospecimens and genomic data, thereby improving knowledge of the biology, treatment and outcome of childhood tumors. As of 2022, over 1100 fresh-frozen tumor samples are available for researchers. We present the workflow of the BTB from sample collection and processing to the generation of genomic data and services offered. To determine the research and clinical utility of the data, we performed bioinformatics analyses on next-generation sequencing (NGS) data obtained from a subset of 82 brain tumors and patient blood-derived DNA combined with methylation profiling to enhance the diagnostic accuracy and identified germline and somatic alterations with potential biological or clinical significance. The BTB procedures for collection, processing, sequencing, and bioinformatics deliver high-quality data. We observed that the findings could impact patient management by confirming or clarifying the diagnosis in 79 of the 82 tumors and detecting known or likely driver mutations in 68 of 79 patients. In addition to revealing known mutations in a broad spectrum of genes implicated in pediatric cancer, we discovered numerous alterations that may represent novel driver events and specific tumor entities. In summary, these examples reveal the power of NGS to identify a wide number of actionable gene alterations. Making the power of NGS available in healthcare is a challenging task requiring the integration of the work of clinical specialists and cancer biologists; this approach requires a dedicated infrastructure, as exemplified here by the BTB.

  • Improved refining energy efficiency in thermo-mechanical pulping by means of collimated wood chipping – from solid mechanics to full scale evaluation
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: PaperWeek Canada 2016 Conference <em>February 1 to 5, 2016, Montreal</em>.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The wood chipping process was never optimized with regard to high yield pulping processes as thermomechanical pulping (TMP) and chemithermomechanical pulping (CTMP). It is generally believed that wood chips for pulping should be produced in such a way that the degree of damage is minimized and that the chip dimensional distribution should be as narrow as possible. Since the TMP and CTMP processes were developed in the 60-ies and 70-ies, compression screw as well as roll nip equipment have been developed to pretreat wood chips as a way to reduce refining energy consumption to given fiber and pulp properties and also in order to improve impregnation. The general conclusions are that a combination of shear and compression in the tangential or radial direction of the wood initiates cracks that later in the refiner will enhance and optimize fiber separation and also fiber property development. The idea with the collimated chipping technology is to utilize the wood chipper as a tool, combining cutting of wood logs to wood chips with a pretreatment of the chips by creating cracks that would enhance fiber separation, fiber surface development as well as chip-impregnation. In this case the compression is performed in the wood fiber direction, in which direction wood actually is weakest when it comes to compression induced cracking. The maximization of the amount of cracks in wood-chips is performed by optimizing the knife angle (or spout angle) in the chipper, to what we call collimated chipping (according to a patent owned by CCT AB). This presentation describes a theoretical background and two demonstration scale studies performed by SCA Forest Products at their Ortviken mill. One conclusion drawn, based on two-month test period with three weeks of collimated chipping, was that specific refining energy reduction was around 100 kWh/adt of the 1400 kWh/adt used in primary stage double disc refining. Most probably the potential is higher if the whole system is optimized. Tests were performed at constant production rate and energy was reduced by reducing power to constant freeness, leading to similar tensile and light scattering levels. The deliberately increased forces created in the wood chipper by means of an optimized (increased) edge angle caused more problems with knife holder equipment than normally, as well as increased vibrations. These problems will have to be solved for future long-term implementation of the technique.

  • Colorectal Liver Metastases – Different Aspects on Treatment with Associated Liver Partition and Portal Vein Ligation for Staged Hepatectomy and on Portal Vein Occlusion
  • 2020
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Introduction: For patients with colorectal liver metastases (CRLM), the only treatment with a possibility for long-term survival and cure is radical resection. The majority of patients are at the time of diagnosis not assessed as resectable because they have advanced disease in the liver or unresectable extrahepatic disease or are too frail to withstand liver surgery. Patients who at the time of diagnosis are not assessed as resectable may be treated with conversion chemotherapy to downsize the tumor burden and render the patient eligible for resection. One concern with chemotherapy administered preoperatively has been the potential negative effect on the future liver remnant (FLR), especially for patients with a low volume of the FLR who are undergoing techniques to increase the volume. Established techniques to increase the volume are portal vein occlusion (PVO) and two-staged hepatectomy (TSH). A more recent method is Associating Liver Partition and Portal Vein Ligation for Staged Hepatectomy (ALPPS). Due to the relative novelty of ALPPS, the long-term oncological results are not known. For patients with CRLM, resection of liver metastases is more favorable from a health economic perspective than palliative treatment and results in a higher quality of life than palliative chemotherapy. For patients undergoing ALPPS as well as TSH, the data are scarce. Aim: The aim of the first study was to determine whether preoperative chemotherapy has a negative impact on the volume increase for patients undergoing ALPPS. The aim of the second study was to analyze the temporal course of the volume increase in the FLR for patients undergoing PVO. The aim of the third study was to study the long-term outcome for patients randomized to ALPPS or TSH. The aim of the fourth study was to perform a health economic analysis of patients randomized to ALPPS or TSH. Methods: The first study was based on data from the ALPPS registry, which is an international registry initiated 2012. All patients included in the registry between 2012 and 2016 were included. The patients were divided into the following four groups: no preoperative chemotherapy, 1 regimen of neoadjuvant chemotherapy, more than 1 regimen, and more than 1 regimen with the addition of monoclonal antibodies. The volume increase between interventions 1 and 2 was analyzed. In the second study, a retrospective analysis was performed of patients randomized to TSH. Forty-eight patients were included. The volume increase of the FLR was analyzed as the kinetic growth rate (KGR). The KGR was calculated from PVO until radical hepatectomy or exclusion, as well as between the first and second radiological evaluations. In the third and fourth studies, patients randomized to ALPPS and TSH were included. In the third study, survival, as well as factors affecting the outcome, were analyzed. In the fourth study, a calculation of resource use was performed, as was an analysis of health-related quality of life (HRQoL) for the groups. Results: In the first study, it was found that chemotherapy had no negative impact on the volume increase for patients undergoing ALPPS. In the second study, it was found that the volume increase of the FLR was largest the first week after ALPPS. In the third study, it was found that patients randomized to ALPPS had a longer survival than those randomized to TSH. Of the factors affecting the outcome, resection of liver metastases had a significant impact. In the fourth study, no significant difference could be found in resource use or HRQoL for patients randomized to ALPPS over TSH. Conclusion: Patients with advanced CRLM undergoing ALPPS should receive preoperative chemotherapy, if indicated. For those undergoing PVO, early evaluation is crucial to evaluate the volume increase, and for those with insufficient increase, additional techniques to increase the volume should be considered. Resection of liver metastases is an important factor to improve the outcome. Further studies are warranted to conclude whether ALPPS or TSH is most effective from a health economic perspective.

  • Liver resection is beneficial for patients with colorectal liver metastases and extrahepatic disease
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Annals of Translational Medicine. - : AME Publishing Company. - 2305-5839 .- 2305-5847. ; 8:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Liver metastases are the most common cause of death for patients with colorectal cancer and affect up to half of the patients. Liver resection is an established method that can potentially be curative. For patients with extrahepatic disease (EHD), the role of liver surgery is less established. Methods: This is a retrospective study based on data from the national quality registry SweLiv. Data were obtained between 2009 and 2015. SweLiv is a validated registry and has been in use since 2009, with coverage above 95%. Patients with liver metastases and EHD were analyzed and cross-checked against the national death cause registry for survival analysis. Results: During the study period, 2,174 patients underwent surgery for colorectal liver metastases (CRLM), and 277 patients with EHD were treated with resection or ablation. The estimated median survival time for the entire cohort from liver resection/ablation was 40 months (95% CI, 32-47). The survival time for patients treated with liver resection was 45 months compared to 26 months for patients treated with ablation (95% CI 38-53, 18-33, P=0.001). A subgroup analysis of resected patients revealed that the group with pulmonary metastases had a significantly longer estimated median survival (50 months; 95 % CI, 39-60) than the group with lymph node metastases (32 months; 95% CI, 7-58) or peritoneal carcinomatosis (28 months; 95% CI, 14-41) (P=0.022 and 0.012, respectively). Other negative prognostic factors were major liver resection and nonradical liver resection. Conclusions: For patients with liver metastases and limited EHD, liver resection results in prolonged survival compared to what can be expected from chemotherapy alone.

  • Landscape perception : linking physical monitoring data to perceived landscape properties
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Landscape research. - : Routledge. - 0142-6397 .- 1469-9710. ; 45:2, s. 179-192
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Changes in the landscape affect not only people’s well-being but also how people perceive and use the landscape. An increasing number of policies have highlighted the importance of conserving a landscape’s recreational and aesthetical values. This study develops and evaluates a model that links people’s perceptions of a mountain landscape to physical monitoring data. Using a questionnaire, we revealed how respondents working with the Swedish mountains characterise the Magnificent Mountain landscape (as defined by Swedish policy objectives) and translated these characteristics into data from the National Inventory of Landscapes in Sweden (NILS). We found 14 potential indicators that could be derived from the existing NILS physical monitoring data and which could be used to monitor changes in the landscape values as perceived by people. Based on the results, we suggest how to simultaneously utilise field sampling of physical data and field photos to provide temporal information about landscape perception.

  • Pastures under pressure : Effects of other land users and the environment
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Reindeer Husbandry and Global Environmental Change. - London : Routledge. - 9781000593402 - 9780367632670 ; , s. 76-98
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Reindeer husbandry has a long history of sharing landscapes with a multitude of other forms of land use. By competing for space, industrial resource developments from the early 20th century onwards have affected where, when and how the landscape can be used for reindeer grazing. Extending from the local to the landscape level, these impacts can reduce pastures either directly or indirectly as a result of increasing landscape fragmentation or changing reindeer behaviour. Furthermore, environmental drivers influence the dynamics of forage availability or accessibility for reindeer. The observed trend of shrinking pastures in the three countries is caused by these cumulative impacts. As a consequence, grazing pressure on the remaining pastures increases, and it curtails reindeer herders’ options to respond to the challenges of climate change. Reversing the continuing decrease in pastures requires the restoration of grazing resources and increasing landscape connectivity to facilitate movement and grazing rotation. However, socio-political incentives are also required to sustain reindeer pastures in the future. This includes an increase in the influence of reindeer herders on land use decisions and the inclusion of their traditional ecological knowledge of pasture management to identify alternative approaches to natural resource management.

  • Curved-lattice epitaxial growth of chiral AlInN twisted nanorods for optical applications
  • 2012
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Despite of using chiral metamaterials to manipulate light polarization states has been demonstrated their great potential for applications such as invisible cloaks, broadband or wavelength-tunable circular polarizers, microreflectors, etc. in the past decade [1-6], operating wavelength in ultraviolet-visible range is still a challenge issue. Since these chiral structures often consist of metallic materials, their operation is designed for the infrared and microwave regions [2-4]. Here, we show how a controlled curved-lattice epitaxial growth (CLEG) of wide-bandgap AlInN semiconductor curved nanocrystals [7] can be exploited as a novel route for tailoring chiral nanostructures in the form of twisted nanorods (TNRs). The fabricated TNRs are shown to reflect light with a high degree of polarization as well as a high degree of circular polarization (that is, nearly circularly polarized light) in the ultravioletvisible region. The obtained polarization is shown to be dependent on the handedness of the TNRs.

  • Curved-Lattice Epitaxial Growth of InxAl1-xN Nanospirals with Tailored Chirality
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Nano letters (Print). - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 1530-6984 .- 1530-6992. ; 15:1, s. 294-300
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Chirality, tailored by external morphology and internal composition, has been realized by controlled curved-lattice epitaxial growth (CLEG) of uniform coatings of single-crystalline InxAl1-xN nanospirals. The nanospirals are formed by sequentially stacking segments of curved nanorods on top of each other, where each segment is incrementally rotated around the spiral axis. By controlling the growth rate, segment length, rotation direction, and incremental rotation angle, spirals are tailored to predetermined handedness, pitch, and height.  The curved morphology of the segments is a result of a lateral compositional gradient across the segments while maintaining a preferred crystallographic growth direction, implying a lateral gradient in optical properties as well. Left- and right-handed nanospirals, tailored with 5 periods of 200 nm pitch, as confirmed by scanning electron microscopy, exhibit uniform spiral diameters of ~80 nm (local segment diameters of ~60 nm) with tapered hexagonal tips.  High resolution electron microscopy, in combination with nanoprobe energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and valence electron energy loss spectroscopy, show that individual nanospirals consist of an In-rich core with ~15 nm-diameter hexagonal cross-section, comprised of curved basal planes. The core is surrounded by an Al-rich shell with a thickness asymmetry spiraling along the core. The ensemble nanospirals, across the 1 cm2 wafers, show high in-plane ordering with respect to shape, crystalline orientation, and direction of compositional gradient. Mueller matrix spectroscopic ellipsometry shows that the tailored chirality is manifested in the polarization state of light reflected off the CLEG nanospiral-coated wafers. In that, the polarization state is shown to be dependent on the handedness of the nanospirals and the wavelength of the incident light in the ultraviolet-visible region.

  • Nucleation and core-shell formation mechanism of self-induced InxAl1−xN core-shell nanorods grown on sapphire substrates by magnetron sputter epitaxy
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Vacuum. - : Pergamon Press. - 0042-207X .- 1879-2715. ; 131, s. 39-43
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Nucleation of self-induced nanorod and core-shell structure formation by surface-induced phase separation have been studied at the initial growth stage. The growth of well-separated core shell nanorods is only found in a transition temperature region (600 degrees C amp;lt;= T amp;lt;= 800 degrees C) in contrast to the result of thin film growth outside this region (T amp;lt; 600 degrees C or T amp;gt; 800 degrees C). Formation of multiple compositional domains, due to phase separation, after similar to 20 nm InxAl1-xN epilayer growth from sapphire substrate promotes the core-shell nanorod growth, showing a modified Stranski-Krastanov growth mode. The use of VN seed layer makes the initial growth of the nanorods directly at the substrate interface, revealing a Volmer-Weber growth mode. Different compositional domains are found on VN template surface to support that the phase separation takes place at the initial nucleation process and forms by a self-patterning effect. The nanorods were grown from In-rich domains and initiated the formation of core-shell nanorods due to spinodal decomposition of the InxAl1-xN alloy with a composition in the miscibility gap.

  • Epitaxial Growth of GaN (0001)/Al2O3 (0001) by Reactive High Power Impulse Magnetron Sputter Deposition
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Epitaxial GaN (0001) thin films were grown on Al2O3 (0001) substrates by reactive high power impulse magnetron sputtering of liquid Ga targets in a mixed N2/Ar discharge. A combination of x-ray diffraction, electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, μ-Raman mapping and spectroscopy, μ-photoluminescence, time of flight elastic recoil detection, and cathodoluminescence showed the formation of relaxed and strained domains in the same films. While the strained domains form due to ion bombardment during growth, the relaxed domains exhibit
