  • A layer correlation technique for pion energy calibration at the 2004 ATLAS Combined Beam Test
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Journal of Instrumentation. - : Institute of Physics (IOP). - 1748-0221. ; 6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A new method for calibrating the hadron response of a segmented calorimeter is developed and successfully applied to beam test data. It is based on a principal component analysis of energy deposits in the calorimeter layers, exploiting longitudinal shower development information to improve the measured energy resolution. Corrections for invisible hadronic energy and energy lost in dead material in front of and between the calorimeters of the ATLAS experiment were calculated with simulated Geant4 Monte Carlo events and used to reconstruct the energy of pions impinging on the calorimeters during the 2004 Barrel Combined Beam Test at the CERN H8 area. For pion beams with energies between 20 GeV and 180 GeV, the particle energy is reconstructed within 3% and the energy resolution is improved by between 11% and 25% compared to the resolution at the electromagnetic scale.

  • Combined performance studies for electrons at the 2004 ATLAS combined test-beam
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Journal of Instrumentation. - : Institute of Physics (IOP). - 1748-0221. ; 5, s. P11006-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In 2004 at the ATLAS (A Toroidal LHC ApparatuS) combined test beam, one slice of the ATLAS barrel detector (including an Inner Detector set-up and the Liquid Argon calorimeter) was exposed to particles from the H8 SPS beam line at CERN. It was the first occasion to test the combined electron performance of ATLAS. This paper presents results obtained for the momentum measurement p with the Inner Detector and for the performance of the electron measurement with the LAr calorimeter (energy E linearity and resolution) in the presence of a magnetic field in the Inner Detector for momenta ranging from 20 GeV/c to 100 GeV/c. Furthermore the particle identification capabilities of the Transition Radiation Tracker, Bremsstrahlungs-recovery algorithms relying on the LAr calorimeter and results obtained for the E/p ratio and a way how to extract scale parameters will be discussed.

  • Photon reconstruction in the ATLAS Inner Detector and Liquid Argon Barrel Calorimeter at the 2004 Combined Test Beam
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Journal of Instrumentation. - 1748-0221. ; 6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The reconstruction of photons in the ATLAS detector is studied with data taken during the 2004 Combined Test Beam, where a full slice of the ATLAS detector was exposed to beams of particles of known energy at the CERN SPS. The results presented show significant differences in the longitudinal development of the electromagnetic shower between converted and unconverted photons as well as in the total measured energy. The potential to use the reconstructed converted photons as a means to precisely map the material of the tracker in front of the electromagnetic calorimeter is also considered. All results obtained are compared with a detailed Monte-Carlo simulation of the test-beam setup which is based on the same simulation and reconstruction tools as those used for the ATLAS detector itself.

  • Combined performance tests before installation of the ATLAS Semiconductor and Transition Radiation Tracking Detectors
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Journal of Instrumentation. - 1748-0221. ; 3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The ATLAS (A Toroidal LHC ApparatuS) Inner Detector provides charged particle tracking in the centre of the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The Inner Detector consists of three subdetectors: the Pixel Detector, the Semiconductor Tracker (SCT), and the Transition Radiation Tracker (TRT). This paper summarizes the tests that were carried out at the final stage of SCT+TRT integration prior to their installation in ATLAS. The combined operation and performance of the SCT and TRT barrel and endcap detectors was investigated through a series of noise tests, and by recording the tracks of cosmic rays. This was a crucial test of hardware and software of the combined tracker detector systems. The results of noise and cross-talk tests on the SCT and TRT in their final assembled configuration, using final readout and supply hardware and software, are reported. The reconstruction and analysis of the recorded cosmic tracks allowed testing of the offline analysis chain and verification of basic tracker performance parameters, such as efficiency and spatial resolution, in combined operation before installation.

  • The ATLAS TRT end-cap detectors
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Journal of Instrumentation. - 1748-0221. ; 3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The ATLAS TRT end-cap is a tracking drift chamber using 245,760 individual tubular drift tubes. It is a part of the TRT tracker which consist of the barrel and two end-caps. The TRT end-caps cover the forward and backward pseudo-rapidity region 1.0 < vertical bar eta vertical bar < 2.0, while the TRT barrel central eta region vertical bar eta vertical bar < 1.0. The TRT system provides a combination of continuous tracking with many measurements in individual drift tubes ( or straws) and of electron identification based on transition radiation from fibers or foils interleaved between the straws themselves. Along with other two sub-systems, namely the Pixel detector and Semi Conductor Tracker (SCT), the TRT constitutes the ATLAS Inner Detector. This paper describes the recently completed and installed TRT end-cap detectors, their design, assembly, integration and the acceptance tests applied during the construction.

  • The ATLAS TRT barrel detector
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Journal of Instrumentation. - 1748-0221. ; 3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The ATLAS TRT barrel is a tracking drift chamber using 52,544 individual tubular drift tubes. It is one part of the ATLAS Inner Detector, which consists of three sub-systems: the pixel detector spanning the radius range 4 to 20 cm, the semiconductor tracker (SCT) from 30 to 52 cm, and the transition radiation tracker ( TRT) from 56 to 108 cm. The TRT barrel covers the central pseudo-rapidity region |eta| < 1, while the TRT endcaps cover the forward and backward eta regions. These TRT systems provide a combination of continuous tracking with many measurements in individual drift tubes ( or straws) and of electron identification based on transition radiation from fibers or foils interleaved between the straws themselves. This paper describes the recently-completed construction of the TRT Barrel detector, including the quality control procedures used in the fabrication of the detector.

  • Acceptance tests and criteria of the ATLAS transition radiation tracker
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: IEEE Transactions on Nuclear Science. - 0018-9499. ; 52:6, s. 2911-2916
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Transition Radiation Tracker (TRT) sits at the outermost part of the ATLAS Inner Detector, encasing the Pixel Detector and the Semi-Conductor Tracker (SCT). The TRT combines charged particle track reconstruction with electron identification capability. This is achieved by layers of xenonfilled straw tubes with periodic radiator foils or fibers providing TR photon emission. The design and choice of materials have been optimized to cope with the harsh operating conditions at the LHC, which are expected to lead to an accumulated radiation dose of 10 Mrad and a neutron fluence of up to 2 . 10(14) n/cm(2) after ten years of operation. The TRT comprises a barrel containing 52 000 axial straws and two end-cap parts with 320 000 radial straws. The total of 420 000 electronic channels (two channels per barrel straw) allows continuous tracking with many projective measurements (more than 30 straw hits per track). The assembly of the barrel modules in the US has recently been completed, while the end-cap wheel construction in Russia has reached the 50% mark. After testing at the production sites and shipment to CERN, all modules and wheels undergo a series of quality and conformity measurements. These acceptance tests survey dimensions, wire tension, gas-tightness, high-voltage stability and gas-gain uniformity along each individual straw. This paper gives details on the acceptance criteria and measurement methods. An overview of the most important results obtained to-date is also given.

  • Intralymphatic Glutamic Acid Decarboxylase With Vitamin D Supplementation in Recent-Onset Type 1 Diabetes: A Double-Blind, Randomized, Placebo-Controlled Phase IIb Trial
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Diabetes Care. - : American Diabetes Association. - 0149-5992 .- 1935-5548. ; 44:7, s. 1604-1612
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • OBJECTIVE To evaluate the efficacy of aluminum-formulated intralymphatic glutamic acid decarboxylase (GAD-alum) therapy combined with vitamin D supplementation in preserving endogenous insulin secretion in all patients with type 1 diabetes (T1D) or in a genetically prespecified subgroup. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS In a multicenter, randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind trial, 109 patients aged 12-24 years (mean +/- SD 16.4 +/- 4.1) with a diabetes duration of 7-193 days (88.8 +/- 51.4), elevated serum GAD65 autoantibodies, and a fasting serum C-peptide >0.12 nmol/L were recruited. Participants were randomized to receive either three intralymphatic injections (1 month apart) with 4 mu g GAD-alum and oral vitamin D (2,000 IE daily for 120 days) or placebo. The primary outcome was the change in stimulated serum C-peptide (mean area under the curve [AUC] after a mixed-meal tolerance test) between baseline and 15 months. RESULTS Primary end point was not met in the full analysis set (treatment effect ratio 1.091 [CI 0.845-1.408]; P = 0.5009). However, GAD-alum-treated patients carrying HLA DR3-DQ2 (n = 29; defined as DRB1*03, DQB1*02:01) showed greater preservation of C-peptide AUC (treatment effect ratio 1.557 [CI 1.126-2.153]; P = 0.0078) after 15 months compared with individuals receiving placebo with the same genotype (n = 17). Several secondary end points showed supporting trends, and a positive effect was seen in partial remission (insulin dose-adjusted HbA(1c) <= 9; P = 0.0310). Minor transient injection site reactions were reported. CONCLUSION Intralymphatic administration of GAD-alum is a simple, well-tolerated treatment that together with vitamin D supplementation seems to preserve C-peptide in patients with recent-onset T1D carrying HLA DR3-DQ2. This constitutes a disease-modifying treatment for T1D with a precision medicine approach.

  • Intralymphatic GAD-Alum (Diamyd (R)) Improves Glycemic Control in Type 1 Diabetes With HLA DR3-DQ2
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism. - : The Endocrine Society. - 0021-972X .- 1945-7197. ; 107:9, s. 2644-2651
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Aims Residual beta cell function in type 1 diabetes (T1D) is associated with lower risk of complications. Autoantigen therapy with GAD-alum (Diamyd) given in 3 intralymphatic injections with oral vitamin D has shown promising results in persons with T1D carrying the human leukocyte antigen (HLA) DR3-DQ2 haplotype in the phase 2b trial DIAGNODE-2. We aimed to explore the efficacy of intralymphatic GAD-alum on blood glucose recorded by continuous glucose monitoring (CGM). Methods DIAGNODE-2 (NCT03345004) was a multicenter, randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind trial of 109 recent-onset T1D patients aged 12 to 24 years with GAD65 antibodies and fasting C-peptide > 0.12 nmol/L, which randomized patients to 3 intralymphatic injections of 4 mu g GAD-alum and oral vitamin D, or placebo. We report results for exploratory endpoints assessed by 14-day CGM at months 0, 6, and 15. Treatment arms were compared by mixed-effects models for repeated measures adjusting for baseline values. Results We included 98 patients with CGM recordings of sufficient quality (DR3-DQ2-positive patients: 27 GAD-alum-treated and 15 placebo-treated). In DR3-DQ2-positive patients, percent of time in range (TIR, 3.9-10 mmol/L) declined less between baseline and month 15 in GAD-alum-treated compared with placebo-treated patients (-5.1% and -16.7%, respectively; P = 0.0075), with reduced time > 13.9 mmol/L (P = 0.0036), and significant benefits on the glucose management indicator (P = 0.0025). No differences were detected for hypoglycemia. GAD-alum compared to placebo lowered the increase in glycemic variability (standard deviation) observed in both groups (P = 0.0219). Change in C-peptide was correlated with the change in TIR. Conclusions Intralymphatic GAD-alum improves glycemic control in recently diagnosed T1D patients carrying HLA DR3-DQ2.

  • Harmonization of proton treatment planning for head and neck cancer using pencil beam scanning: first report of the IPACS collaboration group
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Acta Oncologica. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0284-186X .- 1651-226X. ; 58:12, s. 1720-1730
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background and purpose: A collaborative network between proton therapy (PT) centres in Trento in Italy, Poland, Austria, Czech Republic and Sweden (IPACS) was founded to implement trials and harmonize PT. This is the first report of IPACS with the aim to show the level of harmonization that can be achieved for proton therapy planning of head and neck (sino-nasal) cancer. Methods: CT-data sets of five patients were included. During several face-to-face and online meetings, a common treatment planning protocol was developed. Each centre used its own treatment planning system (TPS) and planning approach with some restrictions specified in the treatment planning protocol. In addition, volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT) photon plans were created. Results: For CTV1, the average D-median was 59.3 +/- 2.4 Gy(RBE) for protons and 58.8 +/- 2.0 Gy(RBE) for VMAT (aim was 56 Gy(RBE)). For CTV2, the average D-median was 71.2 +/- 1.0 Gy(RBE) for protons and 70.6 +/- 0.4 Gy(RBE) for VMAT (aim was 70 Gy(RBE)). The average D-2% for the spinal cord was 25.1 +/- 8.5 Gy(RBE) for protons and 47.6 +/- 1.4 Gy(RBE) for VMAT. The average D-2% for chiasm was 46.5 +/- 4.4 Gy(RBE) for protons and 50.8 +/- 1.4 Gy(RBE) for VMAT, respectively. Robust evaluation was performed and showed the least robust plans for plans with a low number of beams. Discussion: In conclusion, several influences on harmonization were identified: adherence/interpretation to/of the protocol, available technology, experience in treatment planning and use of different beam arrangements. In future, all OARs that should be included in the optimization need to be specified in order to further harmonize treatment planning.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The ATLAS Inner Detector consists of three sub-systems, the Pixel Detector at the innermost radius, the Semi-Conductor Tracker at intermediate radii, and the Transition Radiation Tracker (TRT) at the outermost radius in front of the electromagnetic calorimeter. The TRT provides a combination of continuous tracking with many projective measurements based on individual drift-tubes (or straws) and of electron identification based on radiator fibres or foils interleaved between the straws themselves. This paper describes the current status of design and construction of the various components of the TRT: the assembly of the barrel modules has recently been completed, that of the end-cap wheels is well underway, and the on-detector front-end electronics is in production. The detector modules and front-end electronics boards will be integrated together over the next year, the barrel and end-cap TRT parts will be assembled and tested with their SCT counterparts during 2005 and installation and commissioning in the ATLAS pit will take place at the end of 2005 and the beginning of 2006.
