- The aim of this article is to analyse a local expression of the transnational Ahbash Sufi movement in light of recent scholarship on the relationship between Salafism and Sufism as well as Islamic neo-traditionalism. Some researchers have reacted against a dichotomous relationship between fundamentalism and Sufism, instead suggesting a continuum and a mutual interdependence. We aim to contribute to a developed understanding of the process whereby some Sufi actors go on the attack against their Islamic foes by publicly and loudly claiming to represent ‘true Islam’ as found in the ‘fundamentals’ of Islam – but with a different understanding of what those fundamentals are. We analyse a series of interviews with a local representative of the transnational Ahbash Sufi movement in Malmö, Sweden; the Ahbash movement has its central leadership in Lebanon. Through discussing the representative’s understanding of ‘good’ and ‘bad’ bidʿa, in particular concerning the celebration of the prophet Muhammad’s birthday (mawlid al-nabi), we note a combined emphasis on authoritative textual sources – including the Qurʾan and hadith literature – and the allegedly unbroken traditional knowledge transmission which secures a correct understanding of Islam. This shows an ambiguous space of Islamic thought and practice, an arguably Salafi-affected neo-traditionalist defense of Sufism, which transgresses commonly employed dichotomies between Salafism and Sufism.

- With the case of Sweden as its focus, this article contributes to the research on state–Islam relations in Europe. From a comparative European perspective, it demonstrates that Sweden departs from what is generally presented as the common pattern when it comes to when, how and why state-Islam relations were first established. Previous theorising on this topic, primarily connected with Jonathan Laurence’s seminal work on state–Islam relations in Europe, argues that such relations follow two phases, namely (1) Embassy Islam (1960–1990) and (2) the institutionalisation of domestic relations with (national) Muslim Councils (1990-onwards). Our conclusion, however, is that Sweden skipped the first phase and went directly to the second in the mid-1970s. This, we argue, can be explained as the (unplanned) result of a general change in church–state relations in Sweden.

Bokens bidrag rör sig över stora avstånd både i tid och rum, mellan olika ämnen och områden – men har det gemensamt att de behandlar framträdande kvinnor i olika religiösa sammanhang. Tanken bakom ämnesvalet är förstås att kvinnligt religiöst ledarskap är en röd tråd i Gunilla Gunners eget akademiska författarskap. Som framgår av flera av bokens bidrag har hon själv också spelat en framträdande roll både som ledargestalt och som inspirationskälla för vänner och kollegor i alla de olika sammanhang där hon rört sig.Gunilla Gunner är docent i religionsvetenskap och har sedan 2005 varit verksam i en rad olika roller på Södertörns högskola.

Promised Soils : Senses of Place Among Yezidis in Dalarna and Sheikhan

- This is an ethnographic study that focuses on Zahmanê Êzîdîa Li Dalarna, the Yezidi cemetery, in Borlänge. The Swedish town of Borlänge has one of the largest Yezidi diaspora communities in Western Europe; a majority emigrated from the Northern Iraqi region of Sheikhan during the 1990s and early 2000s. The overall aim of this project is to investigate how the Yezidi community in Borlänge puts Zahmanê Êzîdîa Li Dalarna into use, the meanings ascribed to the site by individual interviewees, and how these relate to ritual places and practices in Sheikhan.The empirical material stems from observations and interviews among members of three extended Yezidi families in Borlänge and in Sheikhan, and archival material from the Church of Sweden. Fieldwork in Sheikhan focused on the valley of Lalish and the cemetery sites in the Yezidi villages in Sheikhan. The empirical material is presented, analysed and discussed through a theoretical framework of place, creation and maintenance of social memory through ritual practice, and the concept of transfer of ritual.The empirical material reveals that salient ritual actions and elements from ceremonies in Lalish and the Yezidi villages in Sheikhan are transferred to Borlänge, and there put into use for ritual practices and for creating and maintaining a collective identity outside of Iraq.

- Islam in the Scandinavian countries—Denmark, Norway, and Sweden—has a long history. There are evidences of contacts between Scandinavia and the Muslim world at least since the Middle Ages. The presence of Muslims in Scandinavia is however of a later date and more established from the 1950s, when immigrants arrived, mainly due to the needs in the labor markets; they successively established congregations and mosques, as they realized that they were to stay in their new countries. Following this period, Muslim migrants have arrived due to geopolitical factors, such as war, which have increased the number of Muslims and their presence and visibility in public space and public debate, which in turn has affected the media image of Islam and Muslims and influenced research. The research on Islam and Muslims has a long history in Scandinavia as well. With the increase of Muslim inhabitants in Scandinavian countries, scholarly interests have also related more to the present and to the study of their own Muslim populations, as well as case studies related to Islamophobia, media images, Muslims in the school systems and labor market, and specific incidents, such as the cartoon crisis and its aftermath.

- In this chapter, Susanne Olsson, Simon Sorgenfrei, and Jonas Svensson analyse some of the narratives presented by one of the most prominent Swedish Salafi online forums: Islam.nu. While advocating a non-violent, inward-looking interpretation, puritan Salafists clearly still separate the in-group from the out-group. By using two different case studies, examining the narratives presented in relation to COVID-19 as well as the issue of gender roles, the chapter probes into the possible tension between the Salafi ideology and existing norms and expectations within the liberal democratic society of Sweden. While clearly expressing ideals that deviate from some of the more mainstream views within Swedish society, the authors highlight that it is clear from the cases examined that the surrounding society indeed does affect the narratives presented. For example, one of the cases show that the group seeks to promote a “positive” image of Islam in relation to gender issues, and that the narratives presented are adjusted according to the values of the mainstream society. While perhaps not constituting a threat to society, the authors still highlight that the decision of some organisations and public agencies to cooperate with puritan Salafists entails certain risks. These collaborations run the risk of giving legitimacy to conservative groups that promote undemocratic values, which might endanger the rights and freedoms of certain individuals.

- Projektet Wahhabism i Sverige - nätverk, praktiker och mission har genomförts av Susanne Olsson, Anne-Sofie Roald, Simon Sorgenfrei och Jonas Svensson. Resultaten från arbetet finns primärt redovisat i artiklar och bokkapitel, varav några är publicerade och andra under publicering i eller inskickade till peer-review tidskrifter och böcker. Dessa artiklar täcker in ett bredare område än det som redovisas nedan och innefattar också artiklar om t.ex. metoder för att analysera mediediskurs om “extrema” och “radikala” muslimer, ofta förekommande begrepp i akademiska och andra offentliga samtal om fundamentalistisk och politisk islam samt informationspåverkan i relation till muslimska ungdomar. Denna rapport är en sammanfattning av delar av forskningsinsatsen, genom att den översiktligt redogör för bakgrunden till projektets forskningsfokus och de resultat som uppnåtts.
