    • Mineralocorticoid receptor antagonists (MRAs) improve survival and reduce morbidity in patients with heart failure, reduced ejection fraction (HF-REF), and mild-to-severe symptoms, and in patients with left ventricular systolic dysfunction and heart failure after acute myocardial infarction. These clinical benefits are observed in addition to those of angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors or angiotensin receptor blockers and beta-blockers. The morbidity and mortality benefits of MRAs may be mediated by several proposed actions, including antifibrotic mechanisms that slow heart failure progression, prevent or reverse cardiac remodelling, or reduce arrhythmogenesis. Both eplerenone and spironolactone have demonstrated survival benefits in individual clinical trials. Pharmacologic differences exist between the drugs, which may be relevant for therapeutic decision making in individual patients. Although serious hyperkalaemia events were reported in the major MRA clinical trials, these risks can be mitigated through appropriate patient selection, dose selection, patient education, monitoring, and follow-up. When used appropriately, MRAs significantly improve outcomes across the spectrum of patients with HF-REF.

  • Amplification of Arctic warming by past air pollution reductions in Europe

    • The Arctic region is warming considerably faster than the rest of the globe(1), with important consequences for the ecosystems(2) and human exploration of the region(3). However, the reasons behind this Arctic amplification are not entirely clear(4). As a result of measures to enhance air quality, anthropogenic emissions of particulate matter and its precursors have drastically decreased in parts of the Northern Hemisphere over the past three decades(5). Here we present simulations with an Earth system model with comprehensive aerosol physics and chemistry that show that the sulfate aerosol reductions in Europe since 1980 can potentially explain a significant fraction of Arctic warming over that period. Specifically, the Arctic region receives an additional 0.3Wm(-2) of energy, and warms by 0.5 degrees C on annual average in simulations with declining European sulfur emissions in line with historical observations, compared with a model simulation with fixed European emissions at 1980 levels. Arctic warming is amplified mainly in fall and winter, but the warming is initiated in summer by an increase in incoming solar radiation as well as an enhanced poleward oceanic and atmospheric heat transport. The simulated summertime energy surplus reduces sea-ice cover, which leads to a transfer of heat from the Arctic Ocean to the atmosphere. We conclude that air quality regulations in the Northern Hemisphere, the ocean and atmospheric circulation, and Arctic climate are inherently linked.

  • Global emissions of terpenoid VOCs from terrestrial vegetation in the last millennium

    • We investigated the millennial variability (1000 A.D.-2000 A.D.) of global biogenic volatile organic compound (BVOC) emissions by using two independent numerical models: The Model of Emissions of Gases and Aerosols from Nature (MEGAN), for isoprene, monoterpene, and sesquiterpene, and Lund-Potsdam-Jena-General Ecosystem Simulator (LPJ-GUESS), for isoprene and monoterpenes. We found the millennial trends of global isoprene emissions to be mostly affected by land cover and atmospheric carbon dioxide changes, whereas monoterpene and sesquiterpene emission trends were dominated by temperature change. Isoprene emissions declined substantially in regions with large and rapid land cover change. In addition, isoprene emission sensitivity to drought proved to have significant short-term global effects. By the end of the past millennium MEGAN isoprene emissions were 634 TgC yr-1 (13% and 19% less than during 1750-1850 and 1000-1200, respectively), and LPJ-GUESS emissions were 323 TgC yr-1(15% and 20% less than during 1750-1850 and 1000-1200, respectively). Monoterpene emissions were 89 TgC yr-1(10% and 6% higher than during 1750-1850 and 1000-1200, respectively) in MEGAN, and 24 TgC yr-1 (2% higher and 5% less than during 1750-1850 and 1000-1200, respectively) in LPJ-GUESS. MEGAN sesquiterpene emissions were 36 TgC yr-1(10% and 4% higher than during 1750-1850 and 1000-1200, respectively). Although both models capture similar emission trends, the magnitude of the emissions are different. This highlights the importance of building better constraints on VOC emissions from terrestrial vegetation.

    • The general circulation model CAM-Oslo was used to examine the influence of varyingaerosol and greenhouse gas emissions on the pattern of surface temperature change betweenthe years 1970 and 2000, and whether the temperature response over different regions wasgoverned by local (due to changes in energy fluxes) or far-field (due to changes in large-scale circulation) processes. Circulation changes, originating from precipitation anomaliesmainly over the west/central Pacific and off the east coast of North America, influenced asubstantial part of the northern hemisphere temperature change pattern in CAM-Oslo, inparticular over southern North America, but also over Europe and Asia. The result highlightsthe importance of better understanding zonally asymmetric precipitation changes due todifferent forcing agents. A local response in surface temperature due to net surface radiativeflux (RF) anomalies could also be detected over Europe and Asia, where the differencein all-sky net surface RF was mainly driven by aerosol- or circulation-induced changes inliquid water path and cloud cover. A local anthropogenic aerosol effect on the cloud dropletsize and subsequent short-wave (SW) RF was found over Europe and Asia, but only whenexcluding a change in the greenhouse gas concentration. For clear skies, the SW RF patternwas well-correlated with the aerosol optical depth anomalies. However, this correlation wasat least partly governed by relative humidity fluctuations. Overall, the greenhouse andaerosol effects on surface temperature were in the simulations found to be non-linear with asignificant feedback on the aerosol population from a warming climate.

    • The objective of this study is to document and evaluate recent changes and updates to the module for aerosols and aerosol-cloud-radiation interactions in the atmospheric module CAM4-Oslo of the core version of the Norwegian Earth System Model (NorESM), NorESM1-M. Particular attention is paid to the role of natural organics, sea salt, and mineral dust in determining the gross aerosol properties as well as the anthropogenic contribution to these properties and the associated direct and indirect radiative forcing. The aerosol module is extended from earlier versions that have been published, and includes life-cycling of sea salt, mineral dust, particulate sulphate, black carbon, and primary and secondary organics. The impacts of most of the numerous changes since previous versions are thoroughly explored by sensitivity experiments. The most important changes are: modified prognostic sea salt emissions; updated treatment of precipitation scavenging and gravitational settling; inclusion of biogenic primary organics and methane sulphonic acid (MSA) from oceans; almost doubled production of land-based biogenic secondary organic aerosols (SOA); and increased ratio of organic matter to organic carbon (OM/OC) for biomass burning aerosols from 1.4 to 2.6. Compared with in situ measurements and remotely sensed data, the new treatments of sea salt and dust aerosols give smaller biases in near-surface mass concentrations and aerosol optical depth than in the earlier model version. The model biases for mass concentrations are approximately unchanged for sulphate and BC. The enhanced levels of modeled OM yield improved overall statistics, even though OM is still underestimated in Europe and overestimated in North America. The global anthropogenic aerosol direct radiative forcing (DRF) at the top of the atmosphere has changed from a small positive value to -0.08 W m(-2) in CAM4-Oslo. The sensitivity tests suggest that this change can be attributed to the new treatment of biomass burning aerosols and gravitational settling. Although it has not been a goal in this study, the new DRF estimate is closer both to the median model estimate from the AeroCom intercomparison and the best estimate in IPCC AR4. Estimated DRF at the ground surface has increased by ca. 60 %, to -1.89 W m(-2). We show that this can be explained by new emission data and omitted mixing of constituents between updrafts and downdrafts in convective clouds. The increased abundance of natural OM and the introduction of a cloud droplet spectral dispersion formulation are the most important contributions to a considerably decreased estimate of the indirect radiative forcing (IndRF). The IndRF is also found to be sensitive to assumptions about the coating of insoluble aerosols by sulphate and OM. The IndRF of -1.2 W m(-2), which is closer to the IPCC AR4 estimates than the previous estimate of -1.9 W m(-2), has thus been obtained without imposing unrealistic artificial lower bounds on cloud droplet number concentrations.

  • The Impact of Oceanic Boundary Conditions on the Climate Effect of Aerosols in ECHAM5-HAM and CAM-Oslo

    • Two general circulation models with sophisticated aerosol treatments, ECHAM5-HAM and CAM-Oslo, have been used to investigate how the sea surface representation influences the simulated aerosol-climate response. Two experiments were performed with ECHAM5-HAM, one with fixed sea surface temperatures (SSTs) and one where a mixed-layer ocean (MLO) model was used. With CAM-Oslo, one experiment with an MLO was conducted. In all experiments equivalent emissions of anthropogenic aerosols and aerosol precursors were used, representing the increased emissions of these between the years 1850 and 2000.The different ocean surface representations had minor effects on the simulated anthropogenic aerosol distribution. The model-specific aerosol treatment had a larger influence on the simulated anthropogenic aerosol optical depth than the change in the ocean boundary condition. The natural aerosols distribution was, on the other hand, sensitive to the ocean surface representation in ECHAM5-HAM.The more substantial surface temperature change and altered atmospheric thermal structure supported in the MLO experiments influenced both the surface energy budget and the global circulation. Despite separating the analysis of the surface energy budget into land and ocean areas, the choice of ocean boundary condition influenced the surface energy-flux changes over land.The larger cooling of the northern hemisphere compared to the southern hemisphere in the MLO experiments led to a southward shift of the tropical Hadley circulation as well as the eddy-driven circulation in the northern hemisphere. In the experiment with fixed SSTs, the winter Hadley cell intensity decreased in each hemisphere. The most prominent change in the zonal mean zonal wind in the fixed SST experiment was an Arctic Oscillation-like southward shift of the mid-latitude jet in the northern hemisphere during the northern hemisphere winter.In the experiments presented in this study, the use of fixed SST and an MLO yielded distinctly different climate impacts despite the a small difference in the simulated anthropogenic aerosol burden.

  • Review and phylogeny of the New Zealand hagfishes (Myxiniformes: Myxinidae), with a description of three new species

    • Hagfishes from New Zealand are reviewed and a phylogeny proposed using morphological and genetic data (DNA sequences of cytochrome c oxidase subunit I gene, COI, and the small subunit RNA, 16S). Eptatretus cryptus sp. nov. was previously confused with Eptatretus cirrhatus (Forster in Bloch & Schneider, 1801) because of their similar morphology, and is found from the Three Kings Islands to Stewart Island and in the eastern part of the Chatham Rise (at depths of 96–922 m). Eptatretus poicilus sp. nov. is endemic to the Three Kings Islands, where it is common and associated with soft sediment and deep-sea coral-sponge habitats (114–842 m). Neomyxine caesiovitta sp. nov. is a slender hagfish found along the east coast of the North Island south to the Chatham Rise (430–1083 m). A neotype is erected for E. cirrhatus (type locality: Breaksea Sound, Fiordland), occurring widely in New Zealand coastal, shelf, and slope waters (1–922 m), but not at the Three Kings Islands. Eptatetrus goliath Mincarone & Stewart, 2006, Neomyxine biniplicata (Richardson & Jowett, 1951), and Nemamyxine elongata Richardson, 1958 are further described using additional material. Rubicundus eos (Fernholm, 1991) is still only known from the holotype (type locality: Challenger Plateau). Genetic results showed that the New Zealand Eptatretus species form a monophyletic group within the subfamily Eptatretinae, indicating likely speciation from a single common ancestor within the area. Eptatretus poicilus sp. nov. is the sister species of E. cirrhatus, and E. cryptus sp. nov. is closely associated with the clade formed by these two species. Eptatretus goliath is most closely associated with Eptatretus minor Fernholm & Hubbs, 1981 (Gulf of Mexico), these two species basally diverging within New Zealand hagfishes. The endemic genus Neomyxine forms a well-supported monophyletic group of as yet uncertain position within the phylogenetic tree. A key to the New Zealand hagfishes, fresh colour photographs, distribution maps, and in situ video recordings are presented
