  • Swedish Early Childhood Preservice Teachers and Inclusive Education
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Special Education in the Early Years : Perspectives on Policy and Practice in the Nordic Countries. - Cham : Springer International Publishing. - 2468-8746. - 9783030912963 ; , s. 87-100
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Inclusive education is an important foundation of Nordic society. It is considered a key pillar in the ‘education for all’ policy and has become an important foundation for shaping pedagogy and practice. This chapter shows how inclusive education is taught and enacted in Swedish early childhood teacher education. A specific focus lies on local legislation documents as a precursor for actions. A case study is shared from a study of Swedish early childhood preservice teachers’ beliefs to include all children in Swedish classrooms to show current understanding of these practices. Consideration is also given to raising concerns of segregation in Swedish education in terms of socioeconomic status, immigrant background and special education. The rapidly changing profile of society in Sweden requires that the teacher education sector be reformed to prepare educators who are competent in including all learners. The key points for consideration for future teacher education policy and practice are given.

  • Initiating Internalization through Collaboration
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Praxis Symposium III – Academic professional and student responsibility for a world worth living in, 5-6 October, University of Borås.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Universities engage in international collaboration for a number of reasons. In the Global North, which is characterized by wealth and power, universities increasingly use international collaboration for competitiveness and marketization. In contrast, the Global South engages in collaboration to strengthen research and build knowledge capacity. Prior studies argue that trust, mutual benefits, and achieving shared understandings and ways of working are important for sustainable collaboration. However, prior studies generally examine what makes a ‘good’ collaboration well after collaboration has been initiated. The contribution of this study is therefore to exemplify the relationship-building process between two Ethiopian university academics and two Swedish university academics. The study is based in ‘group reflection’ and uses data collected in April 2019 from questions composed by each set of academics, which were deliberated during the initial project meeting. Their experiences ofenablement and constraint in research collaboration and their motivations for pursuing a new collaboration are in focus.

  • The Purpose of Internationalization - Future Teachers' Perspectives
  • 2023
  • Proceedings (redaktörskap) (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The purpose of internationalization in higher education differs between countries and is shaped by educational stakeholders, policymakers, and governments. Interestingly, the purpose of internationalization for the individuals who are most affected by internationalization policies and practices, namely the students, remains largely unknown. Hence, this study investigates the purpose of internationalization from the perspective of a group of international prospective teachers studying at a Swedish university. The results indicate that these students have a complex and flexible view of internationalization, particularly in light of current global tensions. The importance of taking student viewpoints into account is emphasized when formulating internationalization strategies.

  • Lessons learnt during COVID-19: making sense of Australian and Swedish university lecturers’ experience
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Educational Technology in Higher Education. - 2365-9440. ; 20:1, s. 1-17
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article reports on a study analysing changes in the use of digital technologies and working from home during the COVID-19 crisis and the impact of these changes on the wellbeing of five female university lecturers from Australia and Sweden. Applying collaborative autoethnographical methods, this study employed Weick’s sensemaking framework to explore how the academics made sense of these sudden changes. The Positive emotion, Engagement, Relationships, Meaning, and Accomplishment (PERMA) wellbeing framework was also employed to explore the effect of these changes on the academics’ wellbeing. Findings from the reflective narratives show that after the initial experiences of stress, each university lecturer was able to adapt and navigate the online teaching environment during the pandemic. However, the time constraints in preparing and adapting to online teaching, and working from home, were experienced by some of the university lecturers as highly stressful and isolating which impacted their sense of wellbeing. Even so, working from home was recognized as a positive experience, providing time for research, hobbies, and time with family. This study addresses a gap in current knowledge by examining the impact of the sudden transition to online teaching and learning had on academic wellbeing as conceptualised through the PERMA framework. In addition, by applying Weick’s sensemaking framework, this study provides a unique perspective around how academics made sense of the sudden switch to online teaching and learning during COVID-19.

  • AUSTRALIAN PRESERVICE TEACHERS PERCEPTIONS ABOUT international professional experience placements
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: ICERI 2013 PROCEEDINGS, Sevilla, 18 november 2013. - 9788461638475 ; , s. 5187-5193
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of this research project was to consider how mono-culturalism and White privilege would affect the cultural and global awareness engendered by an international professional experience placement in a small group of Early Childhood pre-service students from a regional inland university. It examined the effectiveness of the international professional experience placement in developing preservice teachers’ ideas of social justice, themselves as teachers and global citizens. The study examined these pre-service teachers’ journeys through face-to-face pre- and post-interview situations. The data collected and analyzed include pre- and post- enactment interview data. A narrative analysis (Thorne, 2001) was used as a strategy to analyze the pre- and post-enactment interview data. The findings from the study provided valuable insights to some of the challenges and issues faced by these Australian rural pre-service teachers in understanding cross-cultural issues during international placements.

  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This chapter relate to my experiences as part of the Occupational, Health and Safety (OHS) team at the University of Gothenburg in Sweden 2014-2016. My work involved development and analysis of psychosocial environmental surveys, the implementation and follow-up of wellbeing programs and participating in safety inspections . The work also involved confidential meetings with academics experiencing stress. To support me in this role required participation in numerous interesting and mandatory workshops. I learnt about the role of Swedish Trade Unions, Swedish laws on health and safety and wellbeing, stress, alcohol and drug abuse, policies relating to gender equity, discrimination, bullying, violence and threat of violence in the workplace. I also participated in several leadership courses and a yearlong course on conflict resolution that was to prove especially effective when mediating in staff conflict. I am using a narrative inquiry approach (Connelly & Clandinin, 2006) reflecting on my experiences. Engaging in narrative inquiry “requires attentiveness to the stories of other professionals as well as to the larger social, institutional and professional narratives in which individuals are embedded” (Clandinin, Cave & Berendonk, 2017, p. 94).

  • Challenges and opportunities - Internationalization, Globalisation and Digitalisation in Higher Education Ethiopia
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Invited lecture/talk Mekelle University Ethiopia.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Internationalisation is the interdependence and interconnectedness between countries influenced by globalization and digitalization "that no country or sector or institution is immune from including higher education" (Bellinger 2015). Three challenges has particularly been noted, the critical voice of INDIVIDUAL universities has been and is stifled instead of strengthened as a result of globalization. Secondly. low quality education has resulted in widening the gap between socioeconomic classes - creating discrimination among developing societies’ students and finally, the loss of cultural or national identity. Fourth industrial revolution or 4.0. is here and means that data is the new gold. Data example In Africa can help build safer cities, stronger economies, healthy populations. For example, Hepta analytics (Kenyan/Rwanda) – Use Agricultural data with sattelite imaging to calculate planting times. Democratic Republic of Congo use an app that was trained identifiying diseased plants is used to provide warnings of disease in banana leaves, and the non-profit company Harambee - Help people connecting to work geographical and personal preference data. Some common challenges include ICT infrastructure might be too expensive for many African universities to afford and is dependent on underlying digital maturity and pre-existing infrastructure of countries including skills and digital literacy.

  • Criminologist Vincent Hurley - Key motivators for crime
  • 2024
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In this episode, I am joined by criminologist and former New South Wales Police detective, Vincent Hurley. Vincent delves into his remarkable career, which includes roles as a police officer, police hostage negotiator, and Detective at Mount Druitt and Penrith, where he investigated serious crimes such as domestic homicides, sexual assaults, serious (non-sexual) assaults, home invasions, and local drug distribution, among others. He shares his journey from policing to criminology and discusses the six key motivators for committing crimes. Vincent is well-known for his outspoken views, particularly his criticism of Australian politicians on the Q+A program, where he argued that domestic violence is not sufficiently addressed because it's seen as politically inconvenient. He also offers his perspective on why he questions the current approach to women's shelters and why, in his view, it’s the perpetrator who should be removed from the home, not the victim.

  • Cross-cultural ‘distance’, ‘friction’ and ‘flow’: exploring the experiences of pre-service teachers on international practicum
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Asia Pacific Journal of Education. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0218-8791 .- 1742-6855. ; 36:3, s. 425-436
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The focus of this paper is to illustrate Australian regional pre-service teachers’ perceptions of an international practicum: their cross-cultural understanding, notions of privilege and teacher/professional identity development. Findings indicate that there were three overlapping dimensions of cross-cultural understanding for pre-service teachers: distance, friction and flow. At times students acknowledged the value of their placement, yet indicated a lack of empathy and engagement with the culture visited. At other times there was clear frustration at the cultural differences, alongside a growth in awareness. The fullest dimension was where pre-service teachers and their students learnt from each other, signalling a sharing towards cross-cultural understanding. Implications of these findings aim to inform how international practicums are designed in the future, as well as signalling directions for further research relating to these border crossings.

  • Cultural change and International student mobility: A Swedish experience
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Cultures and Beliefs Conference, Romania.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This paper presents a snap shot of a German exchange student’s experience of culture and change at a Swedish University. Based on narrative research the data is drawn from the student’s email correspondence and from a focus group interviews with a number of international students. Findings suggest that the initial challenges faced by the international student studying in Sweden included an initial sense of isolation as the student was trying to fit in to the Swedish University culture, and learning about negotiating the university requirements. The positive findings included a sense of belonging, understanding different cultures, time to reflect on the differences and similarities between the German and Swedish higher education systems and the effect of the cultural change to the student’s sense of self.

  • Future teachers’ perspectives on the purpose of internationalisation
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Re-Imagining Education: Collaboration and Compassion - ABSTRACT BOOKLET. - Aberdeen, Scotland : University of Aberdeen Scotland, International Higher Education for Teaching and Learning (HETL).
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Future teachers’ perspectives on the purpose of internationalisation are largely unknown. Their perspectives are important because as teachers in a globalized world, they will need to understand what internationalisation is and its various processes and consequences for the teaching profession. With an understanding of internationalisation, they can actively work with internationalisation in their teaching practice rather than be passive adapters. In this narrative study, we present the responses of 12 international future teachers who studied at a major Swedish University in 2021 and 2022. They originated from countries such as Japan, Germany, Belgium, Spain, The Netherlands, Switzerland, and Japan and were between 24 and 40 years old. Their perceptions on the purpose of internationalisation were analysed using Stier’s (2003; 2004; 2010) framework of internationalization ideologies, which consists of three categories: idealism, instrumentalism, and educationalism. In our results, we show how the future teachers’ perceptions are illustrative of the ideologies. Our preliminary findings also show that their perceptions are more complex than these three categories. For example, we found that their perceptions relate to more than one ideology and that these complex perspectives are generally related to their experiences of and reflections on achanged educational context due to technological advancement and the Covid-19 pandemic. To illustrate, several of the future teachers connected their understanding on the purpose of internationalisation to increased digitalisation, as well as the advantages and disadvantages of globalisation in the context of a global pandemic.

  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Konferans Forskning pågår 28 Oktober 2015.

  • Inclusion
  • 2018
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Inclusion is an important foundation of Swedish education. This presentation share the findings of a survey of ninety-seven Swedish early childhood (EC) preservice teachers' attitudes, concerns, and intentions to include children with disabilities in regular classrooms. A six-part self-reporting questionnaire was used to examine participants' attitudes, concerns, efficacy, and intentions toward inclusion. The results showed that although the Swedish EC preservice teachers' in this study expressed 'some' concern about working with children the results indicated a high degree of teacher efficacy. To determine predictors of participants' intentions and use of inclusive practices a series of regression analysis were undertaken. Knowledge of local legislation emerged as significant predictor of participants' intention scores. Teaching efficacy scores were significant predictors for both intention and use of inclusive practices
