- The instrumentation in Hall A at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility was designed to study electro-and photo-induced reactions at very high luminosity and good momentum and angular resolution for at least one of the reaction products. The central components of Hall A are two identical high resolution spectrometers, which allow the vertical drift chambers in the focal plane to provide a momentum resolution of better than 2 x 10(-4). A variety of Cherenkov counters, scintillators and lead-glass calorimeters provide excellent particle identification. The facility has been operated successfully at a luminosity well in excess of 10(38) CM-2 s(-1). The research program is aimed at a variety of subjects, including nucleon structure functions, nucleon form factors and properties of the nuclear medium. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

3D tree-ring analysis using helical X-ray tomography

- The current state-of-the-art of tree-ring analysis and densitometry is still mainly limited to two dimensions and mostly requires proper treatment of the surface of the samples. In this paper we elaborate on the potential of helical X-ray computed tomography for 3D tree-ring analysis. Microdensitometrical profiles are obtained by processing of the reconstructed volumes. Correction of the structure direction, taking into account the angle of growth rings and grain, results in very accurate microdensity and precise ring width measurements. Both a manual as well as an automated methodology is proposed here, of which the MATLAB (c) code is available. Examples are given for pine (Pinus sylvestris L), oak (Quercus robur L) and teak (Tectona grandis L.). In all, the methodologies applied here on the 3D volumes are useful for growth related studies, enabling a fast and non-destructive analysis.

- A high-quality double-polarization data set for the helicity dependence of the total and differential cross-sections for both gammap --> Npi channels in the Delta region has been obtained in the framework of the GDH experiment. The experiment, performed at the Mainz microtron MAMI, used a 4pi detection system, a circularly polarized photon beam, and a longitudinally polarized frozen-spin target. These data are included in the database to perform a multipole analysis to determine the properties of the Delta(1232)-resonance. For the resonant Delta(1232) multipoles we find a very good agreement with previous analyses, while the nonresonant ones show significant deviations.

- With increased resolution in x-ray computed tomography, refraction adds increasingly to the attenuation signal. Though potentially beneficial, the artifacts caused by refraction often need to be removed from the image. In this paper, we propose a postprocessing method, based on deconvolution, that is able to remove these artifacts after conventional reconstruction. This method poses two advantages over existing projection-based (preprocessing) phase-retrieval or phase-removal algorithms. First, evaluation of the parameters can be done very quickly, improving the overall speed of the method. Second, postprocessing methods can be applied when projection data is not available, which occurs in several commercial systems with closed software or when projection data has been deleted. It is shown that the proposed method performs comparably to state-of-the-art methods in terms of image quality.

- The helicity dependence of the (γ) over right arrow(p) over right arrow -+ peta reaction has been measured for the first time at a center-of-mass angle theta(eta)*= 70degrees in the photon energy range from 780 MeV to 790 MeV. The experiment, performed at the Mainz microtron MAMI, used a 4pi-detector system, a circularly polarized, tagged photon beam. and a longitudinally polarized frozen-spin target. The helicity 3/2 cross-section is found to be small and the results for helicity 1/2 agree with predictions from the MAID analysis.

Experimental check of the Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn sum rule for H-1

- For the first time we checked the fundamental Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn (GDH) sum rule for the proton experimentally in the photon energy range from 0.2-2.9 GeV with the tagged photon facilities at MAMI (Mainz) and ELSA (Bonn). New data of the doubly polarized total cross section difference are presented in the energy range from 1.6 to 2.9 GeV. The contribution to the GDH integral from 0.2-2.9 GeV yields [254+/-5(stat)+/-12(syst)] mub with negative contributions in the Regge regime at photon energies above 2.1 GeV. This trend supports the validity of the GDH sum rule.

Measurement of helicity-dependent photoabsorption cross sections on the neutron from 815 to 1825 MeV

- Helicity-dependent total photoabsorption cross sections on the deuteron have been measured for the first time at ELSA (Bonn) in the photon energy range from 815 to 1825 MeV. Circularly polarized tagged photons impinging on a longitudinally polarized LiD target have been used together with a highly efficient 4 pi detector system. The data around 1 GeV are not compatible with predictions from existing multipole analyses. From the measured energy range an experimental contribution to the GDH integral on the neutron of [33.9 +/- 5.5(stat)+/- 4.5(syst)] mu b is extracted.

- Macroporous hydrogels (MHs) have been prepared by cross-linking polymerization of hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) or cross-linking co-polymerization of HEMA with dimethylacrylamide (DMAA) in semi-frozen state. The MHs are elastic and have a unique structure of large interconnected pores with pore sizes up to 100 µm and total porosity of 94–97%, as demonstrated by micro-computed tomography. The stiffness of such MHs increased with total monomer concentration and with the ratio of DMAA in the composition. Pore-surface modification of the HEMA MHs was achieved by grafting a stimuli-responsive polymer, poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM), with high density using atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). The effect of catalytic system, initiator content and the addition of sacrificial initiator on the ATRP process have been studied. The elasticity, possibility of drying and fast re-swelling, tunable mechanical properties and the macroporous, interconnected structure of HEMA MHs are of interest for biomedical applications such as cell culturing.
