  • Energy reconstruction of electromagnetic showers from Ν0 decays with the ICARUS T600 liquid argon TPC
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Acta Physica Polonica, Series B.. - 1509-5770 .- 0587-4254. ; 41:1, s. 103-125
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We discuss the ICARUS T600 detector capabilities in electromagnetic shower reconstruction through the analysis of a sample of 212 events, coming from the 2001 Pavia surface test run, of hadronic interactions leading to the production of π 0 mesons. Methods of shower energy and shower direction measurements were developed and the invariant mass of the photon pairs was reconstructed. The (γγ) invariant mass was found to be consistent with the value of the π 0 mass. The resolution of the reconstructed π 0 mass was found to be equal to 27.3%. An improved analysis, carried out in order to clean the full event sample from the events measured in the crowded environment, mostly due to the trigger conditions, gave a π 0 mass resolution of 16.1%, significantly better than the one evaluated for the full event sample. The trigger requirement of the coincidence of at least four photo-multiplier signals favored the selection of events with a strong pile up of cosmic ray tracks and interactions. Hence a number of candidate π 0 events were heavily contaminated by other tracks and had to be rejected. Monte Carlo simulations of events with π 0 production in hadronic and neutrino interactions confirmed the validity of the shower energy and shower direction reconstruction methods applied to the real data.

  • Experimenting with Open Innovation in Science (OIS) practices: A novel approach to co-developing research proposals
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: CERN IdeaSquare Journal of Experimental Innovation. - 2413-9505. ; 5:2, s. 28-49
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Co-producing scientific research with those who are affected by it is an emerging phenomenon in contemporary science. This article summarizes and reflects on both the process and outcome of a novel experiment to co-develop scientific research proposals in the field of Open Innovation in Science (OIS), wherein scholars engaged in the study of open and collaborative practices collaborated with the “users” of their research, i.e., scientists who apply such practices in their own research. The resulting co-developed research proposals focus on scientific collaboration, open data, and knowledge sharing and are available as an appendix to this article.

  • Underground operation of the ICARUS T600 LAr-TPC : first results
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Journal of Instrumentation. ; 6:07
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Important open questions are still present in fundamental Physics and Cosmology, like the nature of Dark Matter, the matter-antimatter asymmetry and the validity of the Standard Model of particle interactions. Addressing these questions requires a new generation of massive particle detectors to explore the subatomic and astrophysical worlds. ICARUS T600 is the first large mass (760 tons) example of a new generation of detectors able to combine the imaging capabilities of the old famous “bubble chamber” with the excellent energy measurement of huge electronic detectors. ICARUS T600 now operates at the Gran Sasso underground laboratory and is used to study cosmic rays, neutrino oscillations and the proton decay. The potential for doing physics of this novel telescope is presented through a few examples of neutrino interactions reconstructed with unprecedented detail. Detector design and early operation are also reported.

  • The PAMELA experiment in space
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research Section A. - 0168-9002 .- 1872-9576. ; 461:03-jan, s. 262-268
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We provide in this paper a status report of the space experiment PAMELA. PAMELA aims primarily to measure the flux of antiparticles, namely antiprotons and positrons, in cosmic rays with unprecedented statistics over a large energy range. Tn addition, it will measure the light nuclear components of cosmic rays, investigate phenomena connected to Solar and Earth physics and it will search for cosmic ray antinuclei with sensitivity better than 10(-7) in the He/He ratio. PAMELA consists of a magnet spectrometer, a transition radiation detector, an imaging calorimeter, a time of flight system and an anticoincidence detector. The apparatus will be installed on board of the Russian satellite of the Resurs type in a polar orbit at about 680 km of altitude. The launch is foreseen for late 2002/early 2003.

  • Ground-based remote sensing of the shallow subsurface : Geophysical methods for environmental applications
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Remote Sensing of Geomorphology. - 0928-2025. - 9780444641779 - 9780444641786 ; 23, s. 55-89
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Noninvasive methods for the characterization of shallow subsurface have been used routinely for some 20–30 years. The growth in these methods has been driven by a variety of breakthroughs in the use of electrical, electromagnetic, and seismic methods, to mention only the most common techniques. Increasing field capabilities and computational power have yet to yield all their potential fruits. In this chapter, we introduce readers to the basic concepts of shallow subsurface methods. We guide them through some of the physical details and present a number of application examples all derived from our own experience, concerning both structural characterization and (fluid)-dynamic understanding of the shallow subsurface. Finally, we propose ideas concerning the future development of this wide and exciting discipline.

  • Intricacies in the interpretation of vertical radar profiling caused by borehole effects
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Conference Proceedings, 23rd European Meeting of Environmental and Engineering Geophysics. - Netherlands : EAGE Publications BV. - 9789462822238 ; 2017, s. 1-5
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Estimation of hydraulic parameters of the vadose zone is a relevant issue in hydrological characterization and flow model calibration. Two borehole Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) techniques are discussed: Zero-Offset Profiling (ZOP) and Vertical Radar Profiling (VRP). The field case is representative of a very common situation in vadose zone characterization: Above the water table, the permittivity inside the air-filled borehole is significantly smaller than in the embedding soil. In this case, if the first-arrivals are picked and the corresponding inversions are performed without a careful analysis, the recovered dielectric relative permittivity (år) profiles are in large disagreement. The presented analysis of VRP synthetic and real datasets clarifies that the presence of the air-filled borehole may alter the propagation of electromagnetic waves, invalidating the comparison among VRP and ZOP first-arrivals. Once the borehole effects are accounted, the comparison between the ZOP and VRP år-profiles is more reasonable and reveals the different resolution of these techniques, focusing on the information that can be inferred for hydrological characterizations. Thus, VRP surveys in vadose zone must be accurately interpreted, as the electromagnetic waves may propagate via "guided" modes along the borehole.

  • (Pseudo-)3D Inversion of Geophysical Electromagnetic Induction Data by Using an Arbitrary Prior and Constrained to Ancillary Information
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Computational Science and Its Applications – ICCSA 2023 Workshops, Proceedings. - 1611-3349 .- 0302-9743. - 9783031371257 ; 14111 LNCS, s. 624-638
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Electromagnetic induction (EMI) methods are often used to map rapidly large areas with minimal logistical efforts. However, they are limited by a small number of frequencies and by their severe ill-posedness. On the other hand, electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) results are generally considered more reliable, with no need for specific calibration procedures and easy 2D/3D inversion. Still, ERT surveys are definitely more time-consuming, and, ideally, an approach with the advantages of both EMI and ERT would be optimal. The present research addresses this issue by incorporating realistic constraints into EMI inversion, going beyond simplistic spatial constraints like smooth or sharp regularization terms, while taking into consideration the ancillary information already available about the investigated site. We demonstrate how additional pre-existing information, such as a reference model (i.e., an existing ERT section) can enhance the EMI inversion. The study verifies the results against observations from boreholes.
