  • Rational design of Ruddlesden–Popper perovskite electrocatalyst for oxygen reduction to hydrogen peroxide
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: SusMat. - : Wiley. - 2766-8479 .- 2692-4552. ; 2:4, s. 456-465
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Although the oxygen reduction process to hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is a green option for H2O2 generation, the low activity and selectivity hindered the industry's process. In recent years, the electrochemical synthesis of H2O2 through a 2e– transfer method of oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) has piqued the interest of both academics and industry. Metal oxide catalysts have emerged as a novel family of electrochemical catalysts due to their unusual physical, chemical, and electrical characteristics. In this work, we first developed a Ruddlesden–Popper perovskite oxide (Pr2NiO4+δ) as a highly selective and active catalyst for 2e– ORR to produce H2O2. Molybdenum was introduced here to adjust the oxidation states of these transition metals with successful substitution into Ni-site to prepare Pr2Ni1-xMoxO4+δ, and the molybdenum substitution improves the H2O2 selectivity during the ORR process, in 0.1 M KOH, from 60% of Pr2NiO4+δ to 79% of Pr2Ni0.8Mo0.2O4+δ at 0.55 V versus RHE. A limiting H2O2 concentration of 0.24 mM for Pr2NiO4+δ and 0.42 mM for Pr2Ni0.8Mo0.2O4+δ was obtained at a constant current of 10 mA/cm2 using a flow-cell reactor using a gas-diffusion electrode.

  • UV-protection and fluorescence properties of the exoskeleton obtained from a living diatom modified by an Eu3+-complex
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Journal of Materials Chemistry C. - : ROYAL SOC CHEMISTRY. - 2050-7526 .- 2050-7534. ; 9:31, s. 10005-10012
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this article, a natural biological porous material, from living diatoms, is used to prepare new UV-protection hybrid materials with an Eu3+-complex. By removing the organic protoplasm of living diatoms, the exoskeleton with a regular pore structure arrangement was obtained. The Eu3+-complex was chemically bonded to the exoskeleton modified by the silane coupling agent (3-aminopropyl)trimethoxy silane (APTMS). Compared with pure Eu3+-complexes, the fluorescence intensity of this hybrid material was increased by approximately 10 times. For illustrating its applications in the field of UV-protection, we mixed the USDU with polyacrylonitrile to produce flexible and transparent polymer films. The hybrid composite film (USDU@PAN) achieved partial absorption of ultraviolet light between 200 and 400 nm. At the same time, it also emits visible fluorescence and the intensity of the fluorescence is greatly increased. Therefore, the USDU@PAN film has wide application prospects in areas such as photoelectric sensors and UV-protection devices. More importantly, we transform natural organisms into materials with excellent optical properties. Therefore, it can be used in the field of UV-protection.

  • Organic Eu3+-complex-anchored porous diatomite channels enable UV protection and down conversion in hybrid material
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Science and Technology of Advanced Materials. - : TAYLOR & FRANCIS LTD. - 1468-6996 .- 1878-5514. ; 21:1, s. 726-736
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The organic Eu3+-complex [Eu(TTA)(3)Phen] has been incorporated into the channels of surface-modified frustules from diatoms as a key material to absorb and convert UV-photons to visible luminescence. Systematic investigation results indicate that the organic Eu3+-complex encapsulated in the functionalized diatomite channels exhibits enhanced luminescence and longer lifetime, owning to the Eu(TTA)(3)Phen complex interacting with its surrounding silylating agents. The organic Eu3+-complex-anchored porous diatomite hybrid luminescent material was compounded with polyethylene terephthalate (PET) by using a mini-twin screw extruder to prepare a self-supporting film of the hybrid material. Besides, the UV absorption properties of the composite films were investigated. These films will potentially be related to the UV protection of photovoltaic devices.

  • Greater mineral and aggregate protection for organic carbon in the soil amended by weathered coal than by biochar : Based on a 3-year field experiment
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Geoderma. - : Elsevier B.V.. - 0016-7061 .- 1872-6259. ; 438
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Soil carbon pool stability plays an important role in reaching carbon neutrality and mitigating global warming. Applying soil amendments is a practical strategy in agricultural production to improve soil environment. Weathered coal (WC) is an organic amendment that can be used to improve soil quality. However, the effects of WC application on soil organic carbon pool stability, and its differences from the effects of biochar (BC, a common amendment) application remains unclear. In this study, BC was selected as a comparison to further evaluate the potential of WC based on a 3-year field experiment, in which WC and BC were individually applied into a loamy clay soil at 0%, 1%, and 3% (w/w) rates. Soil organic carbon and its fractions (including particulate organic carbon and mineral-bound organic carbon), soil aggregate fractions and its stability, and the organic carbon content in aggregates were examined. The results showed that both WC and BC significantly increased soil total organic carbon, particulate and mineral-bound organic carbon (P < 0.05). The mineral-bound organic carbon content in WC treatment was significantly higher than that in BC treatment (by 32% under the 3% rate) (P < 0.05), whereas, there were no significant differences in soil total organic carbon content. Both WC and BC increased the soil organic carbon content in all aggregate fractions. While only the WC improved the soil aggregate stability, and which was 15% (under 1% rate) and 28% (under 3% rate) higher in WC treatments than in BC treatments (P < 0.05). The proportion of mineral-bound organic carbon to soil total organic carbon content and the soil aggregate stability were obviously related the soil C/N, and the WC treatments had a higher proportion of mineral-bound organic carbon and soil aggregate stability than BC treatments under the same soil C/N. The results indicated that the application of WC may be more effective than BC in increasing mineral and aggregate protection for soil organic carbon and thus improving soil carbon pool stability. Additionally, the purchase cost of WC was clearly lower than that of BC. Combined with the low cost and the benefits in soil structure and carbon pool stability, the application of WC appeared to have advantages over BC. Our findings provide robust evidence that WC is more effective than BC in improving soil carbon pool stability.

  • Non-conjugated natural alginate as electron-transport layer for high performance polymer solar cells after modification
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Journal of Power Sources. - : ELSEVIER. - 0378-7753 .- 1873-2755. ; 510
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The search for the alternatives to expensive synthesized conjugated polymers as interfaces in polymer solar cells (PSCs), which could largely decrease the cost and promote the commercialization process of PSCs, is now highly relevant. To introduce natural polymer as the interface layer for the high-efficiency PSCs would be a potential choice. In this study, a purely natural polysaccharide from ocean without any conjugated structure, sodium alginate (SA), is utilized as efficient electron transport layer (ETL) to replace the conjugated star molecule, poly [(9,9-bis(3-(N,NdiMethyl)-NethylaMMoiniuM-propyl)-2,7-fluorene)-alt-2,7-(9,9-dioctylfluorene)]dibroMide (PFN-Br), and modify the aluminum (Al) electrode in conventional PSCs. The reduction of the work function of Al is successfully achieved by SA forming a dipole and keeping the ohmic contact at the interface. Meantime, the ideal charge transfer and exciton dissociation are realized, along with decreasing charge recombination, resulting in a comparable power conversion efficiency (PCE) with devices of PFN-Br as ETL. For poly([2,6-4,8-di(5-ethylhexylthienyebenzo[1,2-b; 3,3-b]dithiophene]3-fluoro-2[(2-ethylhexyl)carbonyl]thieno[3,4-b]thiophenediyl):[6,6]-phenyl-C-71-butyric acid methyl ester (PTB7-Th:PC71BM) system, PCE is increased to 9.5% and for Poly [(2,6-(4,8-bis(5-(2-ethylhexyl-3-fluoro)thiophen-2-yl)-benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b]dithio-phene))-alt-(5,5-(1,3-di-2-thienyl-5,7-bis(2-ethylhexyl)benzo[1,2-c:4,5-c]dithio-phene-4,8-dione)]:3,9-bis(2methylene-((3-(1,1-dicyanomethylene)-6,7-difluoro)-indanone))-5,5,11,11-tetrakis(4-hexylphenyl)-dithieno[2,3-d:2,3-d]-s-inda-ceno[1,2-b:5,6-b] dithiophene (PM6:IT-4F) system, PCE 13.4%, respectively, which illustrates a promising future for photovoltaic research of natural alginate non-conjugated polyelectrolyte in conventional PSCs.

  • Data and data collection methodologies for the development of computational models of AV/VRU interaction and their integration into virtual simulation testing of AV : Deliverable 2.3 in the EC ITN project SHAPE-IT
  • 2023
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Several computational models explaining interactions between AVs and the VRUs pedestrians and cyclists have been developed in SHAPE-IT. For instance, there are now models predicting whether a pedestrian or cyclist will cross or yield at an intersection. Further, interaction models were developed and/or verified using different types of data collected in experiments or 'in the wild'. These data were combined and fed to different algorithms that leveraged machine learning to describe road-user behaviour. This deliverable address both pedestrian and cyclist interactions with AVs, utilising both naturalistic data and data collected in controlled environments. The former comprised site-based and in-vehicle data collections. The latter included data from several virtual environments (e.g., driving simulators, riding simulators, and pedestrian simulation environments). The main conclusion of this deliverable is that the potential for computational models of AV/VRU interaction to promote AV safety while reducing the cost and time of AV development is high. However, more data is needed before human behaviour (especially in critical scenarios) is captured precisely and comprehensively enough that their integration into virtual simulations delivers explainable, accurate, and reliable results. This deliverable is rather a stepping stone to be used to define intermediate goals for the eventual development of computational models of AV/VRU interaction and their integration into virtual simulations for safety benefit assessment. Within SHAPE-IT, ESR3, ESR13, and ESR14 developed everyday-driving models that may be used directly in traffic simulations, while the focus of ESR15 has been on methods related to and applications of counterfactual simulations.

  • Early Cambrian (Stage 4) brachiopods from the Shipai Formation in the Three Gorges area of South China
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Journal of Paleontology. - : Cambridge University Press. - 0022-3360 .- 1937-2337. ; 95:3, s. 497-526
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Diverse and abundant fossil taxa have been described in the lower Cambrian Shipai Formation in the Three Gorges area of Hubei Province, South China, but the taxonomy and diversity of the co-occurring brachiopod fauna are still far from clear. Here we describe the brachiopod fauna recovered from the Shipai Formation in the Three Gorges area of South China, including representatives of the subphylum Linguliformea: linguloids (Lingulellotreta ergalievi, Eoobolus malongensis, and Neobolidae gen. indet. sp. indet.), and an acrotretoid (Linnarssonia sapushanensis); and representatives from the subphylum Rhynchonelliformea: the calcareous-shelled Kutorginates (Kutorgina sinensis, Kutorgina sp., and Nisusia liantuoensis). This brachiopod assemblage and the first occurrence of Linnarssonia sapushanensis shell beds permit correlation of the Shipai Formation in the Three Gorges area of Hubei Province with the Stage 4 Wulongqing Formation in the Wuding area of eastern Yunnan. This correlation is further strengthened by the first appearance datum (FAD) of the rhynchonelliform brachiopod Nisusia in the upper silty mudstone of both the Shipai and Wulongqing formations. The new well-preserved material, derived from siliciclastic rocks, also gives critical new insights into the fine shell structure of L. sapushanensis. Microstructural studies on micromorphic acrotretoids (like Linnarssonia) have previously been restricted to fossils that were acid-etched from limestones. This is the first study to carry out detailed comparative ultrastructural studies on acrotretoid shells preserved in siliciclastic rocks. This work reveals a hollow tube and solid column microstructure in the acrotretoid shells from the Shipai Formation, which is likely to be equivalent of traditional column and central canal observed in shells dissolved from limestones.

  • First report of acrotretoid brachiopod shell beds in the lower Cambrian (Stage 4) Guanshan Biota of eastern Yunnan, South China
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Journal of Paleontology. - : Cambridge University Press. - 0022-3360 .- 1937-2337. ; 95:1, s. 40-55
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Brachiopod shell accumulations are abundant and diverse in the lower Cambrian strata of Yunnan Province, South China, but most commonly they are composed of linguloid and acrotheloid brachiopods. Here, we describe the first record of shell beds with high-density accumulations of microscopic acrotretoid brachiopods (usually <2 mm in width) in the muddy deposits of the Wulongqing Formation (Guanshan Biota, Cambrian Stage 4) in the Wuding area of Yunnan Province. The acrotretoid shell beds from the Wulongqing Formation vary from thin mm-thick pavements to more well-developed beds, several centimeters thick. The occurrence of remarkably rich acrotretoid shell beds indicates that microscopic lingulates began to exert an important role in hardening and paving the soft-substrate seafloor during the early Cambrian evolution of Phanerozoic “mixgrounds.” The new Guanshan material is referred to a new species, Linnarssonia sapushanensis n. sp., which differs from other species of Linnarssonia mainly in having a well-developed internal pedicle tube, as well as a relatively longer dorsal median septum. The occurrence of Linnarssonia sapushanensis n. sp. in the Wulongqing Formation in eastern Yunnan extend the oldest record of the genus on the Yangtze Platform of South China back to at least Cambrian Stage 4.

  • Methodological Framework for Modelling and Empirical Approaches (Deliverable D1.1 in the H2020 MSCA ITN project SHAPE-IT)
  • 2021
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The progress in technology development over the past decades, both with respect to software and hardware, offers the vision of automated vehicles as means of achieving zero fatalities in traffic. However, the promises of this new technology – an increase in road safety, traffic efficiency, and user comfort – can only be realized if this technology is smoothly introduced into the existing traffic system with all its complexities, constraints, and requirements. SHAPE- IT will contribute to this major undertaking by addressing research questions relevant for the development and introduction of automated vehicles in urban traffic scenarios. Previous research has pointed out several research areas that need more attention for a successful implementation and deployment of human-centred vehicle automation in urban environments. In SHAPE-IT, for example, a better understanding of human behaviour and the underlying psychological mechanisms will lead to improved models of human behaviour that can help to predict the effects of automated systems on human behaviour already during system development. Such models can also be integrated into the algorithms of automated vehicles, enabling them to better understand the human interaction partners’ behaviours. Further, the development of vehicle automation is much about technology (software and hardware), but the users will be humans and they will interact with humans both inside and outside of the vehicle. To be successful in the development of automated vehicles functionalities, research must be performed on a variety of aspects. Actually, a highly interdisciplinary team of researchers, bringing together expertise and background from various scientific fields related to traffic safety, human factors, human-machine interaction design and evaluation, automation, computational modelling, and artificial intelligence, is likely needed to consider the human-technology aspects of vehicle automation. Accordingly, SHAPE-IT has recruited fifteen PhD candidates (Early Stage Researchers – ESRs), that work together to facilitate this integration of automated vehicles into complex urban traffic by performing research to support the development of transparent, cooperative, accepted, trustworthy, and safe automated vehicles. With their (and their supervisors’) different scientific background, the candidates bring different theoretical concepts and methodological approaches to the project. This interdisciplinarity of the project team offers the unique possibility for each PhD candidate to address research questions from a broad perspective – including theories and methodological approaches of other interrelated disciplines. This is the main reason why SHAPE-IT has been funded by the European Commission’s Marie Skłodowska-Curie Innovative Training Network (ITN) program that is aimed to train early state researchers in multidisciplinary aspects of research including transferable skills. With the unique scope of SHAPE-IT, including the human-vehicle perspective, considering different road-users (inside and outside of the vehicle), addressing for example trust, transparency, and safety, and including a wide range of methodological approaches, the project members can substantially contribute to the development and deployment of safe and appreciated vehicle automation in the cities of the future. To achieve the goal of interdisciplinary research, it is necessary to provide the individual PhD candidate with a starting point, especially on the different and diverse methodological approaches of the different disciplines. The empirical, user-centred approach for the development and evaluation of innovative automated vehicle concepts is central to SHAPE- IT. This deliverable (D1.1 “Methodological Framework for Modelling and Empirical Approaches”) provides this starting point. That is, this document provides a broad overview of approaches and methodologies used and developed by the SHAPE-IT ESRs during their research. The SHAPE-IT PhD candidates, as well as other researchers and developers outside of SHAPE-IT, can use this document when searching for appropriate methodological approaches, or simply get a brief overview of research methodologies often employed in automated vehicle research. The first chapter of the deliverable shortly describes the major methodological approaches to collect data relevant for investigating road user behaviour. Each subchapter describes one approach, ranging from naturalistic driving studies to controlled experiments in driving simulators, with the goal to provide the unfamiliar reader with a broad overview of the approach, including its scope, the type of data collected, and its limitations. Each subchapter ends with recommendations for further reading – literature that provide much more detail and examples. The second chapter explains four different highly relevant tools for data collection, such as interviews, questionnaires, physiological measures, and as other current tools (the Wizard of Oz paradigm and Augmented and Virtual Reality). As in the first chapter this chapter provides the reader with information about advantages and disadvantages of the different tools and with proposed further readings. The third chapter deals with computational models of human/agent interaction and presents in four subchapters different modelling approaches, ranging from models based on psychological mechanisms, rule-based and artificial intelligence models to simulation models of traffic interaction. The fourth chapter is devoted to Requirements Engineering and the challenge of communicating knowledge (e.g., human factors) to developers of automated vehicles. When forming the SHAPE-IT proposal it was identified that there is a lack of communication of human factors knowledge about the highly technical development of automated vehicles. This is why it is highly important that the SHAPE-IT ESRs get training in requirement engineering. Regardless of the ESRs working in academia or industry after their studies it is important to learn how to communicate and disseminate the findings to engineers. The deliverable ends with the chapter “Method Champions”. Here the expertise and association of the different PhD candidates with the different topics are made explicit to facilitate and encourage networking between PhDs with special expertise and those seeking support, especially with regards to methodological questions.

  • Perceived safety and predictability of human/AV interactions : Deliverable 1.2 in the EC ITN project SHAPE-IT
  • 2023
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In the fast-evolving landscape of transportation, the integration of Automated Vehicles (AVs) holds immense promise for revolutionizing mobility and enhancing road safety. As we embark on this transformative journey, it is imperative that we investigate and understand the intricacies of the interactions between humans and AVs, because successful integration of AVs into the urban fabric hinges not only on their technical proficiency but also on human factors. Consequently, the fundamental premise of our exploration is that a thorough understanding of the perceived safety and predictability of AVs is of key importance. Supporting the development of AVs that are perceived as safe requires the consideration and integration of different aspects and perspectives on predictability that are highly related to each other. On the one hand, the drivers and passengers inside the vehicle must, at least in principle, be able to understand and predict the behaviour of the AV, because any unexpected behaviour would reduce their acceptance and trust—and consequently their willingness to adopt this technology. To achieve this goal, the AV’s behaviour (and, ideally, its underlying goals and plans) must be made transparent to the humans inside the vehicle. On the other hand, the behaviour— specifically the movement—of an AV depends in part on the movements of the surrounding humans. In highly dynamic, social environments such as urban traffic, the ability of AVs to predict the movement of vulnerable road users (VRUs) is therefore paramount. The AVs’ proactive and anticipatory responses can enhance overall road safety and contribute to their efficient, harmonious integration into shared urban environments. Thus, to some degree, these prediction functions must be transparent to the humans inside the AV, to facilitate predictability of AV behaviour (so that the humans in the AVs know what to expect) and to ensure that they experience an appropriate level of perceived safety. Although this deliverable is in SHAPE-IT work package 1 ("Safe and transparent interactions between AVs and humans inside the AVs"), we have included both in-AV and outside-AV perspectives. This decision was motivated by the interdependence of these two perspectives and the multi-disciplinary emphasis of SHAPE-IT. Essentially, we addressed the multifaceted challenges presented by the predictability of human movement behaviour from both inside and outside the AV. Our empirical results shed light on many nuances of the factors that influence the subjective sense of safety experienced by individuals as they interact with AVs. Our approaches included subjective evaluations, neuroergonomics methodologies, and modelling approaches—as well as revelations about the degree to which AV-VRU interactions can be accurately predicted. In the three chapters of this deliverable, we will explain our findings, which reveal the complex tapestry of human-AV interactions. Results from empirical and modelling research on the perceived safety of AVs and the predictability of human-AV interactions will be presented. By revealing the interwoven threads of perceived safety and predictability, we hope to contribute not only to academic discourse but also to the practical implementation of AV technologies. Our endeavour aligns seamlessly with the European Union's commitment to fostering innovation that prioritizes human-centric design, thereby ensuring that future mobility is not just automated but, more importantly, safe, and predictable for all.

  • First Report of Small Shelly Fossils from the Cambrian Miaolingian Limestones (Zhangxia and Hsuzhuang Formations) in Yiyang County, Henan Province of North China
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Minerals. - : MDPI. - 2075-163X. ; 11:10
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Small Shelly Fossils (SSFs) from the Cambrian are widely distributed and well known across different paleocontinents of the world. However, middle Cambrian SSFs from North China Platform have only rarely been documented until now. In this paper, we presented the first report on SSFs from bioclastic and oolitic limestones of the Zhangxia and Hsuzhuang formations of Henan province, North China. The carbonate-hosted fauna includes brachiopods (Micromitra sp., M. modesta, Eoobolus sp., and Schizopholis sp.), helcionellids (Oelandiellaaccordionata and O. aliciae), hyolithids, Hyolithellus sp., Chancelloriaeros, sponge spicules, echinoderm ossicles, and chancelloriid sclerites. In terms of preservation, the brachiopod shell valves of M. modesta appeared to be homogeneous, consisting of tightly packed phosphate grains. Eoobolus sp. is composed of primary layer and secondary baculate, both of which consist of tightly compacted phosphate grains. Schizopholis sp. has multiple-lamellar phosphatized microstructures that distinctly differ from the other brachiopods recovered from the Longwanggou section. A similar multiple-lamellar microstructure was also revealed in conchs of Hyolithellus, with tightly compacted phosphate grains. The argillaceous shell of Oelandiellaaccordionata and O. aliciae, and the calcitic inner molds of hyolith did not preserve any shell structure. The helcionellids O. accordionata and O. aliciae and the brachiopod M. modesta were reported for the first time from North China. The fauna is most similar to the middle Cambrian faunas of South Australia, in the brachiopod and mollusk components; it is also similar in composition of brachiopods and mollusks to coeval faunas from South China. The new fauna of SSFs in the Yiyang Longwanggou Section indicated that the Hsuzhuang and Zhangxia formations are late Drumian to middle Guzhuangian in age, most likely correlating with the Murrawong Creek Formation of South Australia.

  • Field-scale assessment of direct and indirect effects of soil texture on organic matter mineralization during a dry summer
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Science of the Total Environment. - : Elsevier B.V.. - 0048-9697 .- 1879-1026. ; 899
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Soil texture plays a crucial role in organic matter (OM) mineralization through both direct interactions with minerals and indirect effects on soil moisture. Separating these effects could enhance the modelling of soil organic carbon (SOC) dynamics under climate change scenarios. However, the attempts have been limited small-scale experiments. Here, we studied the effects of soil texture on added OM mineralization in loamy sand, loam and silt loam soils in nine agricultural fields in Flanders, Belgium. Soil moisture, temperature, groundwater table depth and the mineralization of 13C-labeled ryegrass were monitored in buried mesocosms for approximately three months during a dry summer. Ryegrass-C mineralization was lowest in the loamy sand (39 ± 7 %) followed by silt loam (48 ± 7 %) and loam (63 ± 5 %) soils, challenging the current clay%-based moderation of C-mineralization rates in soil models. Soil temperature was not influenced by soil texture, whereas soil moisture was indeed dependent on soil texture. It appears that capillarity sustained upward water supply from groundwater to the topsoil in loam and silt loam soils but not in loamy sand soil, although this difference in capillary rise could not fully explain the higher moisture content in loam than that in silt loam soils. Additionally, soil texture only impacted remnant added ryegrass pieces (>500 μm) but not the finer ryegrass-derived SOC (<500 μm), which might point at the important indirect control of texture on OM mineralization during prolonged summer drought. However, these effects are only manifested during drought when no other factors (e.g., groundwater depth or subsurface water flows) exert an overriding impact on the soil water balance. Overall, our findings highlight the need to properly incorporate the indirect effects of soil texture on OM mineralization into soil carbon models to accurately predict soil C stocks under future climate change scenarios.

  • Brachiopods from the Latham Shale Lagerstätte (Cambrian Series 2, Stage 4) and Cadiz Formation (Miaolingian, Wuliuan), California

  • Ingår i: Journal of Paleontology. - : Cambridge University Press. - 0022-3360 .- 1937-2337. ; 96:1, s. 61-80
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A moderately diverse assemblage of brachiopods from the Latham Shale Lagerstätte (Cambrian Series 2, upper Stage 4) and the upper Cadiz Formation (Miaolingian, Wuliuan), California is described in detail for the first time. The fauna includes both linguliform and rhynchonelliform brachiopods—Hadrotreta primaea (Walcott, 1902), Paterina prospectensis (Walcott, 1884), Dictyonina pannula (White, 1874), and Mickwitzia occidens Walcott, 1908; and Nisusia fulleri Mount, 1981 and Wimanella highlandensis (Walcott, 1886), respectively—together with olenellid trilobites and hyolithids. The fauna differs from other Cambrian Konservat-Lagerstätten (notably Cambrian Series 2 Chengjiang and Guanshan Lagerstätten, eastern Yunnan) in that the brachiopod shell valves in many cases are still preserved with their original mineralization. Moreover, the excellently preserved shale-hosted valves even include cases with exquisite epithelial cell molds, otherwise only seen in acid-etched material from carbonate rocks. The pitted ornamentation in D. pannula closely resembles that described from Ordovician linguliforms. The unusual preservation of N. fulleri provides important clues for ancestral composition of the brachiopod shell. The two articulated rhynchonelliform species probably represent the oldest records of this group from the west Laurentia. The fauna could also represent the earliest onset of the transition from the Cambrian Evolutionary Fauna (CEF) to the Paleozoic Evolutionary Fauna (PEF).

  • Behavioural models explaining and predicting transparent negotiations between AVs and human road users : Deliverable 2.2 in the EC ITN project SHAPE-IT
  • 2023
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • One key enabler for the development of automated vehicles that can coexist and negotiate with human road users in a safe, transparent, and human-acceptable manner is the development of mathematical models of human behaviour in the relevant interactive scenarios. Such models are needed as components both in real-time AV algorithms and in simulation tools for virtual AV testing. However, many important questions about how to model human road user interactions remain unanswered, and five of the Early Stage Researchers (ESRs) in the SHAPE-IT project have targeted such research questions. This report provides an overall introduction to the area of human-AV interaction modelling and summarises the ESRs’ research and findings in this area, including links to the ESRs’ peer-reviewed papers and preprints (providing full details). The SHAPE-IT modelling research by these ESRs has spanned a broad spectrum of modelling approaches and modelling use cases and has generated results such as: More computationally effective and transferable algorithms for real-time prediction of pedestrian movement; novel insights about human driver communication and behaviour during lane changes; a general model of human AV passengers’ subjective perception of traffic risk; a demonstration that models of vehicle-pedestrian interactions based on behavioural game theory outperform conventional game theory models; and novel insights about how cyclists’ head, eye, and pedalling behaviour predict cyclist-vehicle interactions. The research by these five ESRs has increased our understanding of, and capability to predict and simulate, how humans interact in traffic, with direct relevance for development of safe and human-acceptable AVs.

  • Clinical efficacy of irinotecan plus raltitrexed chemotherapy in refractory esophageal squamous cell cancer
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Anti-Cancer Drugs. - : LIPPINCOTT WILLIAMS & WILKINS. - 0959-4973 .- 1473-5741. ; 31:4, s. 403-410
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Our retrospective study assessed the efficacy and safety of irinotecan plus raltitrexed in esophageal squamous cell cancer (ESCC) patients who were previously treated with multiple systemic therapies. Between January 2016 and December 2018, records of 38 ESCC patients who underwent irinotecan plus raltitrexed chemotherapy after at least one line of chemotherapy were reviewed. Efficacy assessment was performed every two cycles according to the RECIST version 1.1. A total of 95 cycles of chemotherapy were administered, and the median course was 3 (range 2-6). There was no treatment-related death. Nine patients had partial response, 21 had stable disease and eight had progressive disease. The overall objective response rate was 23.68% (9/38) and the disease control rate was78.94% (30/38). After a median follow-up of 18.5 months, the median progression-free survival and overall survival were 105 and 221 days, respectively. There were five patients (13.15%) with grade 3/4 leukopenia, three patients (7.89%) with grade 3/4 neutropenia and one patient (2.63%) with grade 3/4 diarrhea. The combination of irinotecan plus raltitrexed was effective for pretreated ESCC patients. Further studies are needed to determine the optimal dose of the two drugs.

  • Hydrogen storage in carbon nanotubes through the formation of stable C-H bonds
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Nano letters (Print). - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 1530-6984 .- 1530-6992. ; 8:1, s. 162-167
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • To determine if carbon-based materials can be used for hydrogen storage, we have studied hydrogen chemisorption in single-walled carbon nanotubes. Using atomic hydrogen as the hydrogenation agent, we demonstrated that maximal degree of nanotube hydrogenation depends on the nanotube diameter, and for the diameter values around 2.0 nm nanotube-hydrogen complexes with close to 100% hydrogenation exist and are stable at room temperature. This means that specific carbon nanotubes can have a hydrogen storage capacity of more than 7 wt % through the formation of reversible C-H bonds.

  • An unknown source of reactor radionuclides in the Baltic Sea revealed by multi-isotope fingerprints
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Nature Communications. - : Nature Research. - 2041-1723. ; 12:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present an application of multi-isotopic fingerprints (i.e., U-236/U-238, U-233/U-236, U-236/I-129 and I-129/I-127) for the discovery of previously unrecognized sources of anthropogenic radioactivity. Our data indicate a source of reactor U-236 in the Baltic Sea in addition to inputs from the two European reprocessing plants and global fallout. This additional reactor U-236 may come from unreported discharges from Swedish nuclear research facilities as supported by high U-236 levels in sediment nearby Studsvik, or from accidental leakages of spent nuclear fuel disposed on the Baltic seafloor, either reported or unreported. Such leakages would indicate problems with the radiological safety of seafloor disposal, and may be accompanied by releases of other radionuclides. The results demonstrate the high sensitivity of multi-isotopic tracer systems, especially the U-233/U-236 signature, to distinguish environmental emissions of unrevealed radioactive releases for nuclear safeguards, emergency preparedness and environmental tracer studies. Anthropogenic activities lead to the accumulation of radioactive substances in the environment. Here the authors use multi-isotopic fingerprints of uranium and iodine to discover a previously unknown source of reactor uranium in the Baltic Sea, likely sourced from a Swedish nuclear facility.

  • Stratigraphy of the Triassic-Jurassic Boundary Successions of the Southern Margin of the Junggar Basin, Northwestern China
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Acta Geologica Sinica. - : Wiley. - 1000-9515. ; 85:2, s. 421-436
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Triassic-Jurassic (Tr-J) boundary marks a major extinction event, which (similar to 200 Ma) resulted in global extinctions of fauna and flora both in the marine and terrestrial realms. There prevail great challenges in determining the exact location of the terrestrial Tr-J boundary, because of endemism of. : and the scarcity of fossils in terrestrial settings leading to difficulties in linking marine and terrestrial sedimentary successions. Investigation based on palynology and bivalves has been carried out over a 1113 m thick section, which is subdivided into 132 beds, along the Haojiagou valley on the southern margin of the Junggar Basin of the northern Xinjiang, northwestern China. The terrestrial Lower Jurassic is conformably resting on the Upper Triassic strata. The Upper Triassic covers the Huangshanjie Formation overlaid by the Haojiagou Formation, while the Lower Jurassic comprises the Badaowan Formation followed by the Sangonghe Formation. Fifty six pollen and spore and one algal on were identified from the sediments. Based on the key-species and abundance of spores and pollen, three zones were erected: the Late Triassic (Rhaetian) Aratrisporites-Alisporites Assemblage, the Early Jurassic (Hettangian) Perinopollenites-Pinuspollenites Assemblage, and the Sinemurian Perinopollenites-Cycadopites Assemblage. The Tr-J boundary is placed between bed 44 and 45 coincident with the boundary between the Haojiagou and Badaowan formations. Beds with Ferganoconcha (?), Unio-Ferganoconcha id Waagenoperna-Yananoconcha bivalve assemblages are recognized. The Ferganoconcha (?) bed is limited to the upper Haojiagou Formation, Unio-Ferganoconcha and Waagenoperna-Yananoconcha assemblages are present in the middle and upper members of the Badaowan Formation. The sedimentary succession is interpreted as terrestrial with two mainly lake deposit intervals within Haojiagou and Badaowan formations, yielding fresh water algae and bivalves. However, the presence of brackish water algae Tasmanites and the marine-littoral facies bivalve Waagenoperna from the Badaowan Formation indicate that the Junggar Basin was influenced by sea water caused by transgressions from the northern Tethys, during the Sinemurian.

  • Triassic-Jurassic climate in continental high-latitude Asia was dominated by obliquity-paced variations (Junggar Basin, Urumqi, China)

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Empirical constraints on orbital gravitational solutions for the Solar System can be derived from the Earth's geological record of past climates. Lithologically based paleoclimate data from the thick, coal-bearing, fluvial-lacustrine sequences of the Junggar Basin of Northwestern China (paleolatitude similar to 60 degrees) show that climate variability of the warm and glacier-free high latitudes of the latest Triassic-Early Jurassic (similar to 198-202 Ma) Pangea was strongly paced by obliquity-dominated (similar to 40 ky) orbital cyclicity, based on an age model using the 405-ky cycle of eccentricity. In contrast, coeval low-latitude continental climate was much more strongly paced by climatic precession, with virtually no hint of obliquity. Although this previously unknown obliquity dominance at high latitude is not necessarily unexpected in a high CO2 world, these data deviate substantially from published orbital solutions in period and amplitude for eccentricity cycles greater than 405 ky, consistent with chaotic diffusion of the Solar System. In contrast, there are indications that the Earth-Mars orbital resonance was in today's 2-to-1 ratio of eccentricity to inclination. These empirical data underscore the need for temporally comprehensive, highly reliable data, as well as new gravitational solutions fitting those data.

  • Comprehension of the Effect of a Hydroxyl Group in Ancillary Ligand on Phosphorescent Property for Heteroleptic Ir(III) Complexes : A Computational Study Using Quantitative Prediction
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Inorganic Chemistry. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 0020-1669 .- 1520-510X. ; 56:15, s. 8986-8995
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A new Ir(III) complex (dfpypya)(2)Ir(pic-OH) (2) is theoretically designed by introduction of a simple hydroxyl group into the ancillary ligand on the basis of (dfpypya)(2)Ir(pic) (1) with the aim to get the high efficiency and stable blue-emitting phosphors, where dfpypya is 3-methyl-6-(2',4'-difluoro-pyridinato)pyridazine, pic is picolinate, and pic OH is 3-hydroxypicolinic acid. The other configuration (dfpypya)(2)Ir(pic OH)' (3) is also investigated to compare with 2. The difference between 2 and 3 is whether the intramolecular hydrogen bond is formed in the (dfpypya)(2)Ir(pic OH). The quantum yield is determined by three different methods including the semiquantitative and quantitative methods. To quantitatively determine the quantum yield is still not an easy task to be completed. This work would provide some useful advices to select the suitable method to reliably evaluate the quantum yield. Complex 2 has larger quantum yield and more stability as compared with 1 and 3. The formation of intramolecular hydrogen bond would become a new method to design new phosphor with the desired properties.

  • Elevated CO2 effects on Zn and Fe nutrition in vegetables: A meta-analysis
  • 2024
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) concentration has been progressively increasing since the onset of the Industrial Revolution and has already reached at around 420 μmol mol⁻¹ nowadays. It is well recognized that elevated CO2 concentration stimulates the yield for C3 crops, but it also simultaneously changes the essential nutrients. However, compared with the main crops, far less attention has been devoted to the effects of elevated CO2 concentration on vegetable growth and quality. Vegetables are highly recommended in daily diets due to their diverse range of beneficial compounds, such as vitamins, antioxidants, minerals, and dietary fiber.  In controlled greenhouse vegetable cultivation, elevated CO2 has been widely adopted as an agricultural practice for enhancing plant growth. Thus, understanding both vegetable growth and nutrient status is crucial to assess the potential impacts of elevated CO2 on future food security in both natural and controlled environments. However, much more attention has been paid to biomass enhancement, and elevated CO2 effects on nutrient quality are less recognized. Among the nutrients, Zinc (Zn) and Iron (Fe) are essential elements in humans. Previous studies have demonstrated a decreasing trend of Zn and Fe in main crops such as wheat and rice with increased CO2, while less is known about whether this alleviation effect on Zn and Fe can apply to vegetables. Therefore, a meta-analysis was conducted in this study to evaluate the influence of elevated CO2 concentration in the atmosphere on vegetable Fe and Zn status, and quantify the potential impact of future climate on nutrition security.

  • What is the Role of Nb on Preferential Hydriding of Double-Phased Uranium, Stabilizing gamma-U, or Avoiding Hydrogen Aggregation?
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: The Journal of Physical Chemistry C. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 1932-7447 .- 1932-7455. ; 125:17, s. 9364-9370
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Uranium as the heaviest naturally occurring element plays important roles in nuclear industries. Hydrogen-caused corrosions and irradiation-caused structural damages are two critical degradations that threaten the safe storage and practical applications of uranium. Through alloying with transition metals like Nb, the gamma-phase of U can be stabilized at room temperature, which shows better performance against hydrogen-caused corrosions than the ground-state alpha-U. The underlying mechanisms have not been fully understood yet. To explain the preferential hydriding phenomenon observed on a specially fabricated double-phase U-2.5 wt % Nb alloy, we perform multiscale ab initio calculations and kinetic Monte Carlo (KMC) simulations. We find that because of different diffusion mechanisms, intrinsic alpha-U and gamma-U already show different hydrogen accumulation behaviors. The existence of random Nb atoms further inhibits hydrogen accumulation in gamma-U. Our work declares its contribution by pointing out the important role of crystal lattice architectures on hydrogen accumulations in metals.

  • Heparan sulfate-dependent phase separation of CCL5 and its chemotactic activity
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: eLIFE. - : eLife Sciences Publications Ltd. - 2050-084X. ; 13
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Secreted chemokines form concentration gradients in target tissues to control migratory directions and patterns of immune cells in response to inflammatory stimulation; however, how the gradients are formed is much debated. Heparan sulfate (HS) binds to chemokines and modulates their activities. In this study, we investigated the roles of HS in the gradient formation and chemoattractant activity of CCL5 that is known to bind to HS. CCL5 and heparin underwent liquid-liquid phase separation and formed gradient, which was confirmed using CCL5 immobilized on heparin-beads. The biological implication of HS in CCL5 gradient formation was established in CHO-K1 (wild-type) and CHO-677 (lacking HS) cells by Transwell assay. The effect of HS on CCL5 chemoattractant activity was further proved by Transwell assay of human peripheral blood cells. Finally, peritoneal injection of the chemokines into mice showed reduced recruitment of inflammatory cells either by mutant CCL5 (lacking heparin-binding sequence) or by addition of heparin to wild-type CCL5. Our experimental data propose that co-phase separation of CCL5 with HS establishes a specific chemokine concentration gradient to trigger directional cell migration. The results warrant further investigation on other heparin-binding chemokines and allows for a more elaborate insight into disease process and new treatment strategies.
