- Det finns en tydlig berättelse om hur humaniora marginaliserades i efterkrigstidens Sverige: i ingenjörernas, teknokraternas och samhällsvetarnas land fanns det inget utrymme för bildning, filosofi och historia. Denna bok utmanar en sådan föreställning och visar hur påtagligt närvarande humaniora var i tidens offentlighet. Genom att anlägga ett kunskapshistoriskt perspektiv åskådliggör författarna hur humanister befann sig mitt i välfärdssamhällets kultur och politik, medier och bokmarknad, idédebatt och utbildningsväsende. I centrum för boken står 1960- och 1970-talens offentlighet. I en första del diskuteras den avgörande roll som humanister spelade i den unga televisionens folkbildningsprogram liksom i tidens populärvetenskapliga pocketutgivning och på dagstidningarnas essäsidor. I en andra del riktas uppmärksamheten mot humanioras plats i den kristna kultursfären, arbetarrörelsens folkbildningsarbete och den nya vänsterns bokcaféer. Vi får möta kulturpersonligheter som Per I. Gedin, Gunnel Vallquist och Jan-Öjvind Swahn, men även tv-producenter, studiecirkelarrangörer, översättare av radikal facklitteratur och många andra. Alla bidrog de till att sätta humanistisk kunskap i rörelse under efterkrigsdecennierna. Mot en internationell bakgrund framträder bilden av ett humanistiskt kunskapssystem med djupa förankringar och vida förgreningar i det svenska samhället. Det är om dessa kunskapens aktörer och arenor som denna bok handlar.

- Biblioteks- och informationsvetenskaplig forskning har visat hur infrastruk-turer och data inte är neutrala utan bidrar till att forma både det som de re-presenterar och sammanhangen där de används. Vi utgår från dessa insik-ter och diskuterar i artikeln en nyhetsrapportering från november 2015 som handlade om en eventuell förändring av abortgränsen i Sverige. Registerda-ta från Svenskt Neonatalt kvalitetsregister, ett av över 80 svenska nationella kvalitetsregister – där data om behandlingar, patienter och sjukdomar sam-las i syfte att förbättra kvaliteten inom vården – visar sig vara betydelsefulla för nyheten. Vi belyser hur infrastrukturer och specifika data kan förstås som relationella och inta olika innebörder eller roller i olika sammanhang, i detta specifika fall, sammanhang som handlar om såväl neonatalvård som abort. Konsekvenserna av förståelserna rör här liv och död.

Låt mig friska upp ditt minne:Mobiltelefoni 1992: Ericssons nya modell, GH172, också kallad Olivia, fungerar över det nya GSM-nätet (det första digitala nätet, introducerat samma år) och väger 440g. Det går att skicka textmeddelanden, men det dröjer en fem-sex år innan utnyttjandet av denna tjänst blir mer allmänt.Persondator 1992: Apple lanserar Machintosh Classic II. 2 MB RAM, hårddisk 40 eller 80 MB. Processor på 16 MHz.Internet 1992: Nordiska universitet och högskolor har en egen Atlantlänk till USA, kallad Nordunet, som detta år uppgraderas till 512 kbit/s. Allmänt tillgängligt blir Internet, i liten skala via Algonet, först 1994 – men det tar fram till sekelskiftet innan mer än hälften av Sveriges befolkning använder Internet.1994 – eller var det 1995? – erbjöds doktoranderna vid Göteborgs universitet, som en tjänst av Universitetsbiblioteket, att »göra en sökning» på ett valfritt begrepp, eller en term. Jag orkade inte, men kollegan Bo tog chansen och sökte på något forskningsrelaterat begrepp och fick 173, eller nåt, resultat i en utskrift på perforerat papper.Låt oss backa några år: 1985. En engagerad samhällskunskapslärare vid Platenskolan i Motala uppmanar sina elever i klass E3B (ekonomisk linje) att skriva till någon myndighet (har glömt vilken) och ta reda på vilka register vi är med i – utan att vi bett om det, utan att vi gett vårt tillstånd. Efter några veckor dimper det ner ett brev, ett registerutdrag. Jag är med i tre stycken. Totalförsvaret (jag ska snart mönstra); körkortsregisgtret (jag lyckas efter en första kuggning ta mitt körkort, hösten -84) och något mer, glömt vilket. Vi var många som var upprörda – vafanken, vi vill inte vara med i några register! Vad är detta??? 1984? »Storebror ser dig!»?Det är ungefär här, i informationssamhällets adolescens och lyckligt naiva uppfattning om hur data förmedlas och lagras, i en tillvaro där tre register är många, och där man fortfarande kan tänka sig att utbilda sig för att bilda sig, ja, det är nu i dessa nådens år 1992 och 1993 som systemet för den moderna utbildningen för universitet och högskola konsolideras. SOU 1992:44 låg till grund för Högskolelagen och det resursfördelningssystem som fortfarande styr villkoren för hur högre utbildning i Sverige bedrivs. Det är ett system som utgår från att humaniora är liktydigt med självstudier och att humanistens kompetens inte har någonting med teknologi och moderna undervisningsformer att göra.Nu presenterar Humtank en rapport om konsekvenserna av denna 24 år gamla ordning.

- This paper analyses how national identity and Othering are constructed through representations of food in French and French-language films. I focus on the French context, for if there have been a number of studies of films depicting the experiences of migrant communities in France and the confrontations between migrant communities and the "host" French communities (Sherzer, 1996; Dubois, 2016; Higbee, 2013; Berghahn, 2013; Asava, 2017), few delve into the representations of food and culinary practices in much detail. The questions raised in this paper may however be applied to other national contexts. To demonstrate how images and discourses related to cooking and eating are employed to convey specific representations of national identity and foreignness, I analyse four films made in the first decades of the twenty-first century (The Secret of the Grain, 2007, Abdellatif Kechiche; Cuire ensemble, 2014, François Pirotte and Foued Bellali; Serial (Bad) Weddings, 2014, Philippe de Chauveron; Tazzeka, 2017, Jean-Philippe Gaud). In these films food comes across as a marker of difference and/or sameness, and as a key element in the construction of national identity. The paper also investigates how these questions of food and national identity are further problematised by factors such as the migrant crisis in Europe and the existence of "postmigratory" generations (Kleppinger and Reeck, 2018) in France who consider themselves French as well as possessing multiple cultural identities.

Museums, libraries, archives, and universities increasingly modify their digital research infrastructures in order to make data open and available (see [Crane, Seales, and Terras 2009]; [Smithies 2014]; [Terras, Nyhan, and Vanhoutte 2013]; cf [Foka et al. 2017]). The imminent assessment and representation of historical data has admittedly challenged the boundaries of historical knowledge and generated new research questions [Drucker 2013] [Nygren, Foka, and Buckland 2014] #nygren2016 [Westin 2014] #westin2015[Chapman, Foka, and Westin 2016] [Foka and Arvidsson 2016]. The process of reconstructing, visualizing and rendering historical data has equally developed together with technology [Westin, Foka, and Chapman 2018]. This is the case in both academic and heritage contexts and in less immediately obvious popular uses, such as the increasingly significant presence and use of history within video games [Chapman 2016]. Regardless of specific context, as this collection of articles shows, the process of digitally capturing and representing historical data is often analogous to and determined by the digital platform used.

- I kapitlet diskuteras beskrivs ett tvärdisciplinärt forskningsprojekt och hur barn kan göras delaktiga och få inflytande i stadsplaneringsprocesser. Barnrättskonventionens artiklar 3 och 12, barns rätt att uttrycka åsikter och bli lyssnade till samt deras rätt till delaktighet i beslut som rör dem själva, fungerar som utgångspunkter. Göteborgs stad arbetar aktivt med att införliva barnperspektivet i det kontinuerliga arbetet, och det återfinns bland annat i policydokument, visioner och riktlinjer. Staden har också utvecklat en modell för barnkonsekvensanalys med intentionen att ”stärka och utveckla barnperspektivet och barns eget perspektiv i planeringen”. Forskningsprojektet ”Barn som medskapare av stadens rum” har haft som syfte att sammanföra barn, skolpersonal, forskare och planerare kring gemensamma frågor om hur barn kan göras delaktiga i stadsplaneringsprocesser och hur det arbetet kan det ingå i skolans ordinarie verksamhet.

- Rapporten summerar följeforskning av det första året av det läsfrämjande projektet "Stärkta bibliotek - Staden där vi läser för våra barn!" Projektet drivs av Kulturförvaltningen i Göteborg och fokuserar folkbibliotekens läsfrämjande arbete mot målgruppen barn och unga och deras familjer. Projektet är en del av Kulturrådets satsning "Stärkta bibliotek" som syftar till att stärka landets biblioteksverksamhet. Följeforskningen följde det läsfrämjande arbetet som genomfördes på tre arenor: på biblioteken, genom uppsökande verksamhet och digitalt. Särskilt uppmärksamhet har ägnats läsfrämjande praktiker och samverkan, fortbildning och utbildning samt praktiker kring bokgåvor. Även jämlikhetsfrågor var viktig för följeforskningen då projektet genomfördes inom ramen för Göteborgs verksamhetsövergripande satsning på mobiliseringen "Staden där vi läser för våra barn".

The Negotiation of Urgency: Economies of Attention in an Italian Emergency Room

- Urgency in a hospital Emergency Room (ER) is not a self-evident state. Urgency is made, by establishing priorities, distributing attention and material resources, and deciding who and what needs to be attended to first – and, simultaneously, who and what has to wait. The process of determining urgency is known as “triage” (from the French verb, trier, “to choose”). This thesis is about the vicissitudes of triage in an Italian ER. Based on one year of ethnographic fieldwork, the thesis explores what happens when urgency is at stake; when it is contested and caught up between different, and frequently conflicting, perspectives. It explores how urgency is determined in practice, and shows how triage always is a vulnerable process of negotiation guided by economies of attention. How is urgency actually shaped in interactions between patients, their families and friends, and the ER staff? The different chapters explore how time in the ER is created through shifting registers of attention, and how attention in the ER is affected by widespread economic and social precarity, and neoliberal national policies of governance. It discusses how triage increasingly is structured by attitudes of mistrust; and also by potential or real outbreaks of violence. Addressing the particular positioning of the ER as a thick space of conjunction between neoliberal state politics and people's increasing need for care and recognition, the thesis aims to contribute to medical anthropology literature by analyzing triage not as a neutral medical way of sorting, but as a practice that actively creates difference. It explores both the limits of triage, and how those limits can spark improvisation and creative reinvention.

Throughout history, craft skills have been highly appreciated and have often been seen as crucial component of a capable human. Despite this, the knowledge base that constitutes the actual making is often overlooked in research within humanities. In this publication we discuss theories and methods of crafting that might benefit cultural heritage studies approach to making, from the artistic, historical, or aesthetical point of view. We deal with discussions on questions such as: What can we learn about things by learning about their making? How do different craft skills offer an understanding of its historical use? How can theoretical and methodological approaches be developed concerning the actual making?

- The Internet may provide the means for otherwise marginalized groups – such as young people with mental health problems – to make their voices heard in public, and online representations are therefore an important source for studying how emotions are conceptualized and communicated in these groups. In an on-going study of YouTube video montages on the subject of self-injury, we have found one emblematic and frequently occurring character: a girl sitting alone in a corner, on the floor, with drawn up knees and head bent down. Images of this character are widespread, not only on YouTube but also on blogs, discussion forums and websites. Together with her likewise sitting 'sisters' – the girl on the swing, the girl on the pier and on the railway track – she is taken to represent young people's unhappiness, pain and misery. Our chapter sets out to explore in greater detail how this character emerges as a signifier of gendered suffering in online contexts. We argue that it contributes to an aestheticization of suffering that often seems to emanate from the rejection of conventional ideals and hegemonic definitions of normality; the embracing of suffering might, thus, be used as a strategy for achieving social distinction. Also, we suggest in our chapter that the girl in the corner and similar representations may be seen as facilitating certain emotional identifications, especially as regards gender.

- In this article we approach a case of intersemiotic translation as a paradigmatic example of Boden’s ‘transformational creativity’ category. To develop our argument, we consider Boden’s fundamental notion of ‘conceptual space’ as a regular pattern of semiotic action, or ‘habit’ (sensu Peirce). We exemplify with Gertrude Stein’s intersemiotic translation of Cézanne and Picasso’s proto-cubist and cubist paintings. The results of Stein’s IT transform the conceptual space of modern literature, constraining it towards new patterns of semiosis. Our association of Boden’s framework to describe a cognitive creative phenomenon with a philosophically robust theory of meaning results in a cognitive semiotic account of IT.

- Sherlock Holmes has travelled across media borders extensively: from technical to technical medium, from basic to basic medium, and from qualified to qualified medium. Through the decades, Sherlock Holmes appeared in many different forms of storytelling and media constellations, so we can analyse the character in terms of transmediality. This chapter discusses one such example: Penny Dreadful, which originated in 2014 as a television series created by the acclaimed Hollywood screenwriter John Logan. The very same processes of worldmaking that have made Welcome to Night Vale successful have enabled the creation of the transmedial worlds of the Sherlock Holmes universe and the transfiction Penny Dreadful. Following Marie-Laure Ryan’s analysis of transmedia, Jan-Noel Thon also notes that transmedial storyworlds can be varying mixtures of canonical media products and fan-produced material. In terms of media modalities, a contemporary audio drama that mimics a community radio broadcast uses a single sensory modality: all information reaches the listeners through the ear.

- The icon is the type of sign connected to efficient representational features, and its manipulation reveals more information about its object. The London Underground Diagram (LUD) is an iconic artifact and a well-known example of representational efficiency, having been copied by urban transportation systems worldwide. This paper investigates the efficiency of the LUD in the light of different conceptions of iconicity. We stress that a specialized representation is an icon of the formal structure of the problem for which it has been specialized. By embedding such rules of action and behavior, the icon acts as a semiotic artifact distributing cognitive effort and participating in niche construction.

- Terrorism i svensk politik (SweTerror) är ett storskaligt tvärvetenskapligt forskningsprojekt med forskare från såväl human- och samhällsvetenskaperna som datavetenskaperna. Samtidigt använder och utvecklar SweTerror nationell forskningsinfrastruktur för riksdagsdata. Detta paper beskriver användningen av samförfattande som en datadriven tvärvetenskaplig praktik för att integrera olika vetenskapliga perspektiv och skapa samsyn i projektforskningen. Vi tar fasta på betydelsen av valet att koncentrera samarbetsformen kring konferenspapers inom specifikt digital humaniora och diskuterar erfarenheten av att samskrivande försvagar vetenskapligt revirtänkande, liksom ett iterativt förhållningssätt till forskningsdata kopplade till forskningsinfrastrukturer under uppbyggnad. Avslutningsvis betonar vi datadrivet samförfattande som en pragmatisk praktik för att stärka kollaborativt samarbete och kunskapsbryggor inom en tvärvetenskaplig forskargrupp.

- This chapter explores different relations of truthfulness and discusses the truth claims of the different qualified media types. Truthfulness is a transmedial notion and when we speak of truth in different contexts, we refer to different kinds of knowledge. Truth, facts and authenticity are often used in everyday discourse as part of apparently clear-cut binaries like truth–lie, authentic–fake, fact–fiction. The truth claims of media can be employed in communication to produce a perception of truthfulness. As media products can be truthful both in relation to external perception or inner experience, another way to look at truth claims is to divide them into objective and subjective truth claims. The chapter discusses how different forms of disinformation draw on the truth claims of news media and construct a perception of truthfulness that is based more on internal coherence than on events that actually have taken place.

- This chapter explores how people with a multicultural identity, that is people with no particular place-based identities, not asserting ancestral connections to the land, and a lack of sense of belonging to a single culture, develop a distinctive way of using traditional forms of intangible cultural heritage, specifically cuisine in terms of food diversity, sense and taste experiences, and culinary savoir-faires. Through exploring how multicultural people give meaning and use local and fusion cuisine as an intangible heritage, the chapter discus how globalization, serial migration and multiculturalism are redefining the notions of originality and authority as traditional defined by the 2003 Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage.

- Digital Humanities is today an integrated part of humanistic research at many universities, and initiatives in the field take a variety of forms. At Linnaeus University, Digital Humanities currently develops as a cross-disciplinary field, building on existing collaborations between faculties in the form of an iInstitute tied to the international iSchool Organization, as part of a research excellence centre on Data Intensive Sciences and Applications (DISA), and European collaboration within the DARIAH-EU network – to mention a few. The papers in this volume emanate from a conference on Digital Humanities, arranged and funded by the Faculty of Arts and Humanities at Linnaeus University on March 12–13, 2020. It is part of the university’s initiative to implement Digital Humanities across departments and faculties, with both a scientific and pedagogical approach, building on competences already present among its researchers and teachers. Focusing the humanities as such, this volume contains contributions from the scholarly fields of Archaeology, History, Library and Information Science, Linguistics, Comparative Literature, Media and Communication Studies, E-learning, and the Study of Religions. It displays a variety of cross-disciplinary connections, new research questions, and innovative methodological approaches – all hallmarks of the wide field of Digital Humanities.

- In contrast to the field of global studies, which has seen spectacular expansion and institutionalisation since the turn of the twenty-first century, there have to date been only a few attempts to promote or institutionalise global humanities as a field of study or research. Moreover, even though several disciplines in the humanities have undergone global turns in recent years, the humanities, with the exception of a certain brand of global history, are not prominent within the field of global studies. Against this background, this article surveys the various attempts that have been made in recent years to promote the concept of global humanities in the form of international scholarly networks, departments, and study programs, and the handful of attempts to sketch the outlines of a research agenda for global humanities. The strengths and limitations of the current approaches are discussed, and the articles advocating the notion of global humanities as a field or framework of research are brought into conversation with one another. Some common themes are identified in the literature on global humanities to date, such as the ambition for the field to be globally inclusive, critical, and transdisciplinary. Building on the recent global turns in some of the humanities disciplines and the steps that have been taken to purge these of traditional national and Eurocentric biases, global humanities should aim to develop frameworks of analysis that can be used to study all cultural expressions of humankind and to foster intercultural dialogue and understanding. Such an undertaking goes beyond the study of modern globalisation, which is the subject matter of global studies.

- The aim of this article is to form a new communication model, which is centered on the intermediate stage of communication, here called medium. The model is intended to be irreducible, to highlight the essential communication entities and their interrelations, and potentially to cover all conceivable kinds of communication of meaning. It is designed to clearly account for both verbal and nonverbal meaning, the different roles played by minds and bodies in communication, and the relation between presemiotic and semiotic media features. As a result, the model also pinpoints fundamental obstacles for communication located in media products themselves, and demonstrates how Shannon's model of transmission of computable data can be incorporated in a model of human communication of meaning.

- In this article, I will firstly sketch a fundamental distinction between representation and mediation, or, more specifically, between representation of media and transmediation. After that, I will discuss media characteristics that can be called “transmedial”, meaning that they can be successfully transferred from one medium to another. The aim is to establish a framework from which to develop a comprehensive theory of transmediality that has the capacity to include a wide range of phenomena that are characterized by transfers of media characteristics. To date, there has been no systematic account of all these phenomena. Existing research is characterized by compartmentalization, which does not favor a general understanding of transmedial relations. Most existing studies focus either on only a few media and their specific interrelations, or on limited study areas such as adaptation and ekphrasis. At the present time, adaptation is probably the most vigorous research area dedicated to the study of transmediality.

- The aim of this essay is to investigate the relation between adaptation and intermediality and to demonstrate why adaptation studies would profit from a broad intermedial research context. A list of ten ways of delimiting the notion of adaptation within the broader field of intermediality is presented and thoroughly discussed. The goal is to pinpoint border zones of adaptation that are only partly recognized as such by adaptation scholars. It is argued that failing to reflect on these borders ignores relevant neighbor disciplines, and that insufficient attention to related theoretical fields reduces the possibility for adaptation studies to produce research that is relevant for a broader range of phenomena and a broader field of scholars. The essay also briefly investigates some core issues of intermedial research, and hence of adaptation studies, and summarizes some vital notions that are helpful for investigating essential similarities and differences among media and for capturing the material and semiotic conditions for adaptation.

- Our minds are capable of perceiving similarities not only within the same but also across different sensory areas and different cognitive domains. Iconicity is representation based on similarity, and cross-modal iconicity, which is an extremely widespread phenomenon, should be understood as iconicity that crosses the borders of different kinds of material, spatiotemporal, and sensorial modes, and, furthermore, the border between sensory structures and cognitive configurations. For instance, a visual entity may resemble and thus iconically represent something that is auditory or abstractly cognitive. The aim of this semiotic study, substantially based on empirical findings in psychological, cognitive, and neurological research, is to suggest a general theoretical framework for conceptualizing cross-modal iconicity and relating different kinds of mono-modal and cross-modal iconicity to each other. Its chief argument is that perception and conception of images and metaphors should be understood as the two extremes in a continuum of iconic representation where cross-modal iconicity bridges the apparent gap between mono-modal, sensory-based iconicity and cognitive iconicity. It offers an outline of material, spatiotemporal, and sensorial modes and their interrelations; a thorough account of cross-modal iconicity; a conceptual structure for charting degrees of similarity and iconicity with the aid of cross-modality; an array of examples illustrating the continuum of iconicity from image to metaphor; and a brief discussion of the notion of image schema as an explanatory factor for cross-modal iconicity.
