- The cat (Felis catus, Linneaus 1758) has lived around or with humans for at least 10,000 years, and is now one of the most popular pets of the world with more than 600 millionindividuals. Domestic cats have developed a more extensive, variable and complex vocal repertoire than most other members of the Carnivora, which may be explained by their social organisation, their nocturnal activity and the long period of association between mother and young. Still, we know surprisingly little about the phonetic characteristics of these sounds, and about the interaction between cats and humans.Members of the research project Melody in human–cat communication (Meowsic) investigate the prosodic characteristics of cat vocalisations as well as the communication between human and cat. The first step includes a categorisation of cat vocalisations. In the next step it will be investigated how humans perceive the vocal signals of domestic cats. This paper presents an outline of the project which has only recently started.

- Genom historien har skilda föreställningar om Norden skapats och uttryckts i olika delar av Europa. De har påverkat beskrivningarna av både Europa och Norden som specifika kulturella rum, och de har bidragit till att politiska, ekonomiska och filosofiska intressen och värderingar kopplats till bestämda geografiska områden. Det finns därför en spännande mångtydighet i själva begreppet Norden, och denna mångtydighet vill bokens olika artiklar belysa. Norden ses här omväxlande som en rent politisk enhet, en geografisk plats, ett kulturellt rum, och ett inre tillstånd. Genomgående fungerar Norden dock som en projektionsyta för strömningar och föreställningar, ofta positiva sådana, varför det också utgör ett mål för drömmar och resor. Men vi finner även en rörelse mot en mörkare och mer kritisk Nordenbild som löper som en röd tråd genom flera av bidragen.

Den här rapporten, som kommit till på ett initiativ av Humanistiska fakultetsstyrelsen vid Göteborgs universitet, har som syfte att beskriva hur medicinsk humaniora som område kommit att utvecklas, hur det har definierats och vilken relevans det kan tänkas ha, hur området ser ut i Sverige i stort och vid Göteborgs universitet i synnerhet samt presentera möjliga strategier för en satsning på området från Humanistiska fakultetens sida.

- Boksamlingen som presenteras i detta kapitel tillhörde den tyske bysantinologen och slavisten Robert Adolf (Rolf ) Klostermann (1907–1983). Den innehåller litteratur på bulgariska, engelska, fornkyrkoslaviska, franska, italienska, litauiska, polska, ryska, serbiska, slovenska, svenska, tyska och ukrainska, mest rörande teologi och kyrkohistoria i olika slaviska länder, främst i Ryssland. Samlingen omfattar cirka 600 volymer och är ett unikt vittnesbörd till perioden 1920–1980. Den omfattar mellankrigstiden, andra världskriget, efterkrigstiden och tiden kring kalla kriget, som är representerad av bland annat flera böcker med kommunistisk och ateistisk propaganda. Detta kapitel är ett samarbete mellan UB och Institutionen för språk och litteraturer, Humanistiska fakulteten vid Göteborgs universitet. Det tar sitt avstamp i den tidigare forskningen kring samlingen. Genom finansiering från Apotekare Gustaf Bernströms fond, har Taissia Goriounova kunnat ansluta till arbetet med att inventera, kategorisera och systematisera hela samlingen. Detta arbete genomfördes under perioden 2018–2020. Vi använde EndNote för att skapa poster med beskrivningar av materialet i samlingen. Projektet ledde till att flera intressanta exemplar upptäcktes och gav nya ledtrådar till samlingens historia.

- Kan vi idag ha något att lära av de klassiska, medeltida och tidigmoderna kulturerna? Många skulle svara ja på den frågan, men det finns också de som skulle beskriva det förmoderna som irrationellt, traditionsbundet, kollektivistiskt och framför allt otidsenligt. Att behålla kontakten med det förmoderna behöver inte betyda att man bekräftar ett "arv" från det förflutna eller ägnar sig åt återbruk av äldre tiders idéer. Bättre är att omvandla, utveckla eller avveckla tidigare tankar eller kritik kring sociala och estetiska mönster. I antologin Omodernt - Människor och tankar i förmodern tid medverkar elva forskare som representerar en rad humanistiska discipliner. Deras texter berättar på mångfacetterade sätt om idéer och föreställningar, språk och texter från antiken till 1600-talet som är relevanta än idag. De argumenterar för vikten av kunskap om de perioder som ligger före vår moderna tid och ger konkreta exempel på forskning i den andan. Det viktiga är att uppmuntra kommunikation över seklen, viljan att vidga sina egna associationer kring mänskligt handlande, att fördjupa sina insikter om hur människor i historien försökt att hantera sin existentiella och samhälleliga situation. Genom sådana perspektivbyten kan vi i bästa fall få klargörande idéer även om vår egen tid.

- The background material of the study consists of articles about French literature gathered between 2010 and 2014 in the Swedish press. The aim of the article is to isolate the most widely discussed French literature from France in the Swedish press during the period, in order to explore why the transfer of this literature persists over time, how it is perceived, and which type of mediators bring about this transmission. The study raises questions about the image of French literature in Swedish media, Sweden’s impact on the transnational circulation of literature, and the use of French literature to place Sweden on the literary map.The results of the reception study show that French literature is presented as both aesthetically disruptive with innovative features and as a normative and traditional model. It incarnates an image of tradition as well as of modernity. French literature from France is principally mediated by orthodox journalists with a consistent symbolic capital, and the posture of these journalists is analyzed through Sapiro’s model, inspired by Bourdieu. The orthodox journalists manage to redirect the symbolic capital inherent to consecrated French literature at three levels: national, personal, and transnational. Firstly, the importation of French literature increases Swedish literature’s symbolic capital. Secondly, this transfer allows for an auto-consecration of the orthodox journalists themselves. Thirdly, this use of highly valued imported literature engenders a supplementary consecration (surconsecration) of a national literature and its dominating language. In conclusion, these observed bilateral literary exchanges show the often overlooked importance of peripheral countries in transnational literary transmission. The results modify Casanova’s (2002) model, since they display the impact on the market from the margins. The transfer of central national literatures in dominating languages towards peripheral countries allows for dominated languages and minor national literatures to take an active part in the construction and reconstruction of the relations on the global literary map.

- This book advances critical discussions about what coloniality, decoloniality and decolonization mean and imply in the Nordic region. It brings together analysis of complex realities from the perspectives of the Nordic peoples, a region that are often overlooked in current research, and explores the processes of decolonization that are taking place in this region. The book offers a variety of perspectives that engage with issues such as Islamic feminism and the progressive left; racialization and agency among Muslim youths; indigenizing distance language education for Sami; extractivism and resistance among the Sami; the Nordic international development endeavour through education; Swedish TV-reporting on Venezuela; creolizing subjectivities across Roma and non-Roma worlds and hierarchies; and the whitewashing and sanitization of decoloniality in the Nordic region. As such, this book extends much of the productive dialogue that has recently occurred internationally in decolonial thinking but also in the areas of critical race theory, whiteness studies, and postcolonial studies to concrete and critical problems in the Nordic region. This should make the book of considerable interest to scholars of history of ideas, anthropology, sociology, cultural studies, postcolonial studies, international development studies, legal sociology and (intercultural) philosophy with an interest in coloniality and decolonial social change.

- Cette communication traite de la « figure étymologique ». À partir d’exemples variés, nous décrirons quelques types de réalisations possibles de cette figure polymorphe en nous intéressant surtout à ses caractéristiques sémantiques. Comme en témoignent les différentes définitions qui en ont été proposées, cette figure peut prendre des formes diverses. Ainsi, elle peut être conçue comme la « [r]éunion dans une construction syntaxique de type exceptionnel, de mots apparentés par l’étymologie […] » (TLFi), comme dans « vivre sa vie ». Aslanov (2001) montre que ce type de rapprochement étymologique peut se faire de manière « camouflée », et cite un exemple de Claudel qui rapproche les mots « idée » et « idole », apparentés par le fait que leurs étymons grecques (« idea » et « eidôlon ») ont la même racine indo-européenne « *weid- » ‘voir’ : « Seigneur, vous m’avez délivré des livres et des Idées, des Idoles et de leurs prêtres ». Or, la figure peut aussi se définir comme l’« emploi du mot selon le sens de son étymon » (Aquien 1999). À titre d’exemple, Mallarmé, parlant de « l’hiver lucide », utilise, selon l’analyse de Pougeoise (2006), le mot « lucide » au sens du latin « lucidus » ‘clair, lumineux’. La figure étymologique concerne, dans ce cas, une occurrence de mot (« lucide ») et non deux, à la différence du vers de Claudel (« idées » – « idoles »). Si l’allusion à l’étymologie est perçue par le récepteur – et que la réception figurale ne reste pas « inactivée » (cf. Bonhomme 2005) – la figure étymologique peut se manifester comme un cas particulier de « plurisémie » (Némo 2014, Rabatel 2015), où le sens étymologique vient s’ajouter au sens actuel d’un mot. Mais nous verrons que l’emploi de ce procédé ne produit pas forcément une superposition de sens. Il peut aussi correspondre à d’autres phénomènes sémantiques, comme l’usage « flou » ou « approximatif » (cf. Fuchs 2009) ou encore l’emploi « monosémique » d’une unité.

- La syllepse, pouvant être définie comme l’emploi d’une occurrence de mot dans deux sens différents, est une des figures de prédilection de Francis Ponge. Cet article examine les syllepses employées à la fin des poèmes de Ponge et s’intéresse à cette figure du point de vue de sa réception. À l’aide d’une analyse quantitative d’un corpus composé de 90 poèmes de Ponge, nous avons voulu tester l’hypothèse selon laquelle la fréquence de syllepses serait particulièrement élevée dans la partie finale de ses poèmes. Les résultats, inattendus, tendent à infirmer cette hypothèse, car il s’est avéré que la fin des textes étudiés ne se distingue pas par une fréquence de syllepses spécialement élevée. Ainsi, la fréquence ne se présente pas, ici, comme un facteur décisif permettant de comprendre le caractère saillant des syllepses apparaissant à la fin des textes, c’est-à-dire d’expliquer le fait que celles-ci sont susceptibles d’attirer beaucoup l’attention lorsqu’elles sont employées à cet endroit. En revanche, les résultats indiquent, indirectement, l’importance des facteurs positionnels pour la perception de cette figure : il se peut en effet qu’une syllepse soit perçue comme saillante du fait même de son positionnement, par exemple en raison de sa position à la fin du texte.

- This thesis studies the 1931 short story collection Portret [The Portrait] by the Russian author Leonid Ivanovich Dobychin (1894–1936?). My main argument is that the principal theme in Dobychin’s writings arises out of the complexities of human encounters. My approach is based on affirmative interpretations that I call “encountering” readings. They draw on critical practices developed by Boris Gasparov, who argues in his 2013 study of Pasternak Boris Pasternak: Po tu storonu poėtiki (Filosofiia. Muzyka. Byt) that the key to Pasternak’s work lies not in the dominant feature of their linguistic texture, but in the momentary states of everyday life that the author captures, and Henri Meschonnic’s Critique du rythme: Anthropologie historique du langage (1982). Meschonnic focuses on rhythm as an intrinsic aspect of the text that requires the reader to participate actively in appreciating the text as a work of art by following the interplay between rhythm, the active subject and what is expressed. Both scholars reflect a turn away from the linguistically informed theoretical approaches that dominated the academic study of literature in the twentieth century. Similarly, I approach Dobychin’s characters on the level of their personal conflicts and everyday lives by simulating an interpersonal encounter in an anti-theoretical search for meaning that is congenial to both the central theme of the stories and the way in which they reveal human encounters “beyond words,” as it were, both within the works and with the reader, through suggestive associations and not yet categorized, “precategorial” experiences in everyday life. The “unoutspokenness” (nedogovorënnost’)—i.e. reticence, a deliberate avoidance of explicitness that Dobychin’s contemporary critics ascribed to his writings and often disparaged as “incomprehensibility”—serves as a starting point for a critical discussion of both earlier research on Dobychin and theoretical approaches to literature more generally. In searching for a dominant formal feature, a ‘key’ or ‘code’, in Dobychin’s writings, earlier scholars have tended to describe it in terms of an anti-aesthetic. The alleged lack of plot, inner coherence and meaning is explained as deliberate, intended to performatively mirror the absurdness and inadequacies, the disorientation and loss of meaning in Soviet reality itself. In this thesis, I argue instead that there is no such lack or incoherence in Dobychin’s works. The “nedogovorënnost’” of his short stories is instead understood as an exact and purposeful way of conveying meaning through what is experienced and shared beyond words in a time that was overburdened with idealistic ideological discourses. At the heart of Dobychin’s stories are moments of fragile human interaction that underlie trivial dialogues and actions in banal everyday existence. The stories let the reader experience the sudden and unexpected human connections that the characters encounter in their everyday impressions. The contrasts and plurality of human perspectives thus perceived evoke a potential interaction beyond societal roles. These brief encounters are presented as something precarious in a Soviet society striving towards a single true ideology. Such a reading suggests that Dobychin is not so much a deliberately enigmatic author as a writer who aspires to express in words that which is profoundly wordless: the encounters between people outside of the ideological categories and discourses of their language.

”Kalla mig inte mamsell!” : En jämförelse av tre skandinaviska översättares behandling av kulturspecifika element i fransk- och engelskspråkig skönlitteratur

- The present study deals with the work and practice of three Scandinavian translators, namely Kjell Olaf Jensen (Norwegian), Marianne Öjerskog (Swedish) and Agnete Dorph Stjernfelt (Danish). The main question of the thesis is what strategies the translators use when translating culture-specific elements from French and English. Theoretically the thesis positions itself within the framework of Descriptive Translation Studies and draws upon system theories as well as Pierre Bourdieu’s sociology of culture. The method consists of a source text – target text analysis, using a somewhat modified version of Pedersen’s (2007) method identifying seven translation strategies, namely (1) retention, (2) specification, (3) direct translation, (4) generalization, (5) substitution, (6) omission and (7) official equivalent. In this thesis the three former and the official equivalent are categorized as “adequate”, whereas generalization, substitution and omission are categorized as “acceptable” using Toury’s (2012) terminology. Six different types of culture-specific elements are investigated, namely (1) titles, address and professional titles, (2) currencies, (3) weights and measures, (4) literature and music, (5) education, and (6) names. In addition to this analysis, interviews with the three translators were carried out. Results show that there are both similarities and dissimilarities in the translators’ choices of translation strategies. It also turns out that the strategies used to a great extent depend on the culture-specific element in question and hardly ever on the source language. Results also suggest that the higher the translators’ amount of accumulated total capital, the more likely it is that they adopt a heterodoxic translation strategy. Jensen and Stjernfelt are more often positioned at one of the two extremes of the adequacy–acceptability axis than is the case for Öjerskog. Moreover, results from the interviews and the text analyses show that there are a number of norms that govern the translators’ practices. The translatorial practice is to manoeuver in a field governed by norms in order to produce the best possible target texts – target texts that are true to the original and conform to domestic literary standards.

- John von Neumann var ett för de allra flesta okänt ungerskt underbarn av judisk härkomst som sedermera flydde undan nazisterna till USA, där han dog 1957. Han var ett matematiskt universalgeni som gav viktiga, för att inte säga avgörande, bidrag till fysikens, biologins, data- och samhällsvetenskapens och meteorologins (och därmed klimatvetenskapens) utveckling under 1900-talet. Vid sidan av den mer allmänt kände Alan Turing föranstaltade han det som vi idag lär känna som A.I. och teoretiserade tidigt om hur man kunde tänka på maskiner som livsformer analogt med biologiska – en idé som idag ingår både i evolutionsbiologiska verktygslådor liksom i visioner och mardrömsscenarier om en teknologisk singularitet bortom vilken generella A.I. dominerar och, i värsta fall, tränger ut människoarten. Det är denne märkliga och skrämmande person Benjamín Labatuts välskrivna roman sätter i centrum för en berättelse om gränslandet mellan genialitet och galenskap, vetenskap och teknik från förra sekelskiftet till nu, logikseminariernas tankelekar och konkret global politisk utveckling på liv och död. Romanen är pärlande klart översatt av Anna Petronella Foultier. Man behöver nog ha ett visst intresse för vetenskap, teknik och/eller global politik för att uppskatta den fullt ut, men mycket sådant förklaras under hand på ett skenbart enkelt vis, så jättestora kunskaper behövs inte.

- This open access book provides insight on how to interpret capability in ageing – one’s individual ability to perform actions in order to reach goals one has reason to value – from a multidisciplinary approach. With for the first time in history there being more people in the world aged 60 years and over than there are children below the age of 5, the book describes this demographic trends as well as the large global challenges and important societal implications this will have such as a worldwide increase in the number of persons affected with dementia, and in the ratio of retired persons to those still in the labor market. Through contributions from many different research areas, it discussed how capability depends on interactions between the individual (e.g. health, genetics, personality, intellectual capacity), environment (e.g. family, friends, home, work place), and society (e.g. political decisions, ageism, historical period). The final chapter by the editors summarizes the differences and similarities in these contributions. As such this book provides an interesting read for students, teachers and researchers at different levels and from different fields interested in capability and multidisciplinary research.

- In this research, the communicative level of dialog or interaction is seen as the co-construction of a linguistic tool by dialog part- ners. The background mental attitude enabling such a practical reasoning is acceptance [3, 4]. The distinction between belief and acceptance is here based on their functional role: truth-oriented versus goal-oriented [8] - that is – by extension – encapsulating facts (declarative knowledge) versus tools (procedural knowledge). In order to precisely define this new mental attitude which is accep- tance, its relationship with belief and communicative action, this research aims at developing a rational model of dialog [13] as well as specifying a cognitive architecture. This approach contributes to the explanation of human behavior by refashioning the notion of cooperative speaker. This enables to mix reasoning-based approaches and reuse-based approach of collaborative view of dialog. Additionally, the notion of Acceptance and more especially its social counterpart - Collective Acceptance respects the properties of co-constructed linguistic tools. Enabling a system to both rely different perspectives (its own point of view, their addresses one or common/shared beliefs) or on existing linguistic tools built during the preceding interactions enhances system’s flexibility and rationality [5, 14].

- The Rök runestone from central middle Sweden, dated to around 800 CE, is famous, among other things, for a supposed reference to the emperor Theodoric the Great. This study proposes instead that the inscription deals with an anxiety triggered by a son’s death and the fear of a new climate crisis similar to the catastrophic one after 536 CE. Combining perspectives and findings from semiotics, philology, archaeology, and history of religion, the study presents a completely new interpretation which follows a unified theme, showing how the monument can be understood in the socio-cultural and religious context of early Viking Age Scandinavia. The inscription consists, according to the proposed interpretation, of nine enigmatic questions. Five of the questions concern the sun, and four of them, it is argued, ask about issues related to the god Odin. A central finding is that there are relevant parallels to the inscription in early Scandinavian poetry, especially in the Eddic poem Vafþrúðnismál.

Enkäten gick ut till 46 personer som genomfört någon del av programmets sista termin. Av dessa valde 25 att delta. Deltagarna besvarade frågor om hur de har upplevt tiden efter ex amen, hur arbetssituationen ser ut i dag, samt hur de upplever programmet, nu när det har gått några år sedan examen.

- This dissertation deals with conversational practices through which interactants manage issues of intersubjectivity, i.e. mutual understanding for all practical purposes. Intersubjectivity is understood in a procedural sense, and as built into the infrastructure of interaction, where each next action embodies aspects of how the previous action was understood. This understanding can be inspected by others, and amended where deemed appropriate. Largely, mutual understanding is thus taken for granted and tacitly assumed. However, at times interactants do pay overt attention to managing understandings, and this thesis focuses on three such cases. The analyses are couched in the framework of conversation analysis (CA), which aims to uncover how participants produce recognizable social actions by means of generic but flexible conversational practices. These practices draw on linguistic resources and other conduct, as well as the sequential position in which the practice is located. The approach taken in this thesis is also characterized by its attention to phonetic detail (including prosodic, articulatory and phonatory aspects of talk) as a resource for action. Each of the three empirical chapters deals with a particular phenomenon involved in managing intersubjectivity in French talk-in-interaction. The first is concerned with formulations, a way of drawing out the gist of what the interlocutor has just said. These may be used to solicit either mere or elaborate confirmations. The second investigates "ah"-prefaced other-repeats, which acknowledge receipt and claim a renewed understanding, while indexing a previous action as inadequate. The third concentrates on mere other-repeats, and demonstrates that they may either indicate a breakdown in intersubjectivity, or display uptake and thus maintained intersubjectivity. One of the main findings is that phonetic design is pivotal in specifying the action conveyed by the practices examined, and thus constitutes an integral part of the practices. The results show that the phonetic design of a turn at talk does not straightforwardly map to intersubjective meaning, but is inextricably linked to action and sequential organization.

- Reading, even when silent and individual, is a social phenomenon and has often been studied as such. Complementary to this view, research has begun to explore how reading is embodied beyond simply being ‘wired’ in the brain. This article brings the social and embodied perspectives together in a very literal sense. Reporting a qualitative study of reading practices across student focus groups from six European countries, it identifies an underexplored factor in reading behaviour and experience. This factor is the sheer physical presence, and concurrent activity, of other people in the environment where one engages in individual silent reading. The primary goal of the study was to explore the role and possible associations of a number of variables (text type, purpose, device) in selecting generic (e.g. indoors vs outdoors) as well as specific (e.g. home vs library) reading environments. Across all six samples included in the study, participants spontaneously attested to varied, and partly surprising, forms of sensitivity to company and social space in their daily efforts to align body with mind for reading. The article reports these emergent trends and discusses their potential implications for research and practice.

- Bengt Emil Johnson was one of the most prominent poets of the short-lived yet highly vivid Swedish concretist movement of the early 1960’s. As for most poets involved in this movement, his carreer soon turned to other manners of writing, in his case more successfully than for many of his fellow concretists. During the second half of the 1960’s he was involved in creating the interartial genre of text-sound-composition, and ever since then he has been an internationally acclaimed composer of electro-acoustic music. Since the 1970’s he has also been recognised as an important innovator in the field of nature-poetry, displaying an attitude as keen and attentive towards the abundance of language as it is towards that of nature. Through this sensitivity he has been able to examine and unfold intriguing correspondences between language and nature. Apart from being a poet during the first half of the 1960’s, Johnson was also a writer of manifestos and essays concerning aesthetic matters. He quite frequently appeared in the press as well as in several of the important Swedish periodicals of the time. Quite a few of the aesthetical texts he wrote during this period were concerned with the artistic potential that was to be found in new technology, especially sound-technology. Particularly interesting are a number of texts which he wrote in collaboration with Lars-Gunnar Bodin. Johnson and Bodin were not, however, the only Swedish artists writing manifestos and essays from these perspectives during those years. Someone else who did was Öyvind Fahlström, the patriarch of the Swedish concretist movement. In my paper I trace a rhetoric in a number of aesthetic essays and manifestos by all these writers published between the years 1954-1965, a rhetoric which in several ways has its aim fixed on connecting technological and scientific breakthrough to artistic breakthrough. In this way I try to point out the fact that a number of the ideals behind the radical avant-garde writing strategies used by Johnson and his compatriots during his concretist years had a technological origin. I also go on to show to what extent these strategies linger in Johnson’s later writing, what part they play, and in what ways they appear. The examples I use from his later writing consist of three, among themselves quite different, poems from his 1989 poetry collection Bland orrar och kor (Amongst Black Grouse and Cows). I aim to show that Johnson, in these poems, still uses techniques appropriated from, and inspired by, mid-century sound-technological landmarks such as the contact-microphone, multiple layer recording, cut-up- and pitching techniques. And all of these technologies and techniques were discussed in the aesthetic writings of Johnson, Bodin, and Fahlström, respectively, during the 1950’s and 1960’s. And all of them were mentioned as holding great artistic potential.

- The cultural policies of the Nordic welfare states from the 1930s onwards mark a paradigmatic shift in the conditions under which the arts operate. This volume explores the historical and discursive ramifications of this process, and its impact on the place of art and literature in the Nordic ideal of modernity. As the contributors testify, cultural policy and the arts were integral to the conception and configuration of the welfare state apparatus, rather than merely serving an ornamental function within it. The thirteen articles, representing a wide range of disciplines and approaches, provide a multifaceted exposition of the relation between artistic practices and politics in above all the Swedish welfare state. By surpassing the traditional scope of literary and visual studies, cultural policy studies, and sociology, as well as urban and environmental studies, this anthology provides a stepping stone for future research.
