  • From Big Bang to Big Data : A History of the Media
  • 2023
  • Book (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • More than just newspapers, television, and social networks, media are the means by which any information is communicated, from cosmic radiation traces to medieval church bells to modern identity documents. Cultures are held together as much by bookkeeping and records as they are by stories and myths. From Big Bang to Big Data is a long history of the media – how it has been established, used, and transformed from the beginning of recorded time until the present. It is not primarily a story of revolutions and innovations, but of continuities and overlaps that reveal surprising patterns across history. Many media were invented as ways to store and share information, and many have served as powerful tools for administration and control. The concerns raised about media today, whether about privacy, piracy, or anxieties over declining cultural standards, preoccupied earlier generations too. In a playful style, accompanied by more than one hundred illustrations, the authors show us how every society has been a media society in its own way. From antique graffiti to last year’s viral YouTube clip, the past is only approachable through media. From Big Bang to Big Data provides a new way of thinking about media in history – and about human societies past and present.

  • Autentiska och artificiella frågor till svensk text Automatisk frågegenerering jämfört med användares frågor för informationsåtkomst : Authentic and artificial questions to Swedish text Automatically generated questions versus user-generated questions for information access
  • 2015
  • Other publication (other academic/artistic)abstract

  • 2017
  • Editorial collection (other academic/artistic)abstract

  • Editorial collection (other academic/artistic)abstract

  • 2009
  • In: Deep Search. - Innsbruck, Wien, Bozen : Studienverlag. - 9783706547956 ; , s. 117-132
  • Book chapter (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • The paper engages in an in-depth discussion of the search engine Google, focusing on its relationship to webmasters and users. Attempts by webmasters to game the ranking system in order to boost the position of their websites are met by Google with a subtle combination of rewards and punishment. It is argued that this strategy involves the establishment of a disciplinary regime that enforces a certain norm for web publishing. Google’s relationship to the users, on the other hand, is characterized by less invasive forms of power. By inserting itself deeply into the users’ information environment, Google can collect and analyze unprecedented amounts of user data. It is argued that the modeling of segmented consumption behavior that these schemes are based upon involves a governmental form of power. It is a kind of power that aims at controlling differential behavior patterns by gaining an intimate statistical knowledge of a population and using this knowledge as a means of predictive risk management.

  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This article describes a study that investigated the need for and challenges connected to the establishment of a collaboratory - a sociotechnical forum where information and other resources can be made accessible and used by practitioners within library and information science. In order to identify needs and challenges interviews were carried out with a number of practitioners at a number of different institutions. The results reveal that there is a need for a collaboratory in order to facilitate the sharing of personal knowledge “on demand”. It is of great importance that the collaboratory is well integrated with practitioner’s daily activities.

  • Sprickor i fasaden
  • 2018
  • Editorial collection (other academic/artistic)abstract

  • 2019
  • In: Museum & Society. - Leicester : University of Leicester. - 1479-8360. ; 17:3, s. 437-452
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This study investigates the relationship between playable, interactive games onoriginal hardware and the representation of game culture using the case of theexhibition GameOn 2.0, often considered to be the largest exhibition of digitalgames in the West so far. Qualitative interviews with museum staff were usedin order to elicit their perspective on the relationship between playability andcontextualization. Our results suggest that play as a way of engaging with gamesas museum objects has limitations which make it necessary to add other meansof contextualization in order to afford critical engagement with digital games ascultural heritage. Play excludes visitors who lack necessary gaming skills as wellas many genres of games which need longer or different kinds of interaction thana museum can allow for in the context of an exhibition. Moreover, we show that notall games can be exhibited in the same way and that we need to adapt exhibitionstrategies to individual games and their properties and contexts.

  • Theoretical Information Studies : Information In The World
  • 2020
  • Editorial collection (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This is the first attempt to delineate the synthetic field of the theoretical study of information, treating information as the basic phenomenon on the fundamental level of the world, encompassing nature, technology, individuals and society. The exploration of information is done within Info-computational approaches, to natural and social phenomena such as Bioinformatics, Information Physics, Informational Chemistry, Computational Physics, Cognitive and Social sciences, with special emphasis on interdisciplinary, crossdisciplinary and transdisciplinary knowledge. The book presents results of collaboration across research fields within info-computational and info-structural frameworks, in attempt to better theoretically and conceptually capture the phenomenon of information and its dynamics (such as computation and communication), as they appear on different levels of organization, on different scales and in different contexts.

  • 2018
  • In: Literacy. - : Wiley. - 1741-4350 .- 1741-4369. ; 52:2, s. 70-77
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Reading, even when silent and individual, is a social phenomenon and has often been studied as such. Complementary to this view, research has begun to explore how reading is embodied beyond simply being ‘wired’ in the brain. This article brings the social and embodied perspectives together in a very literal sense. Reporting a qualitative study of reading practices across student focus groups from six European countries, it identifies an underexplored factor in reading behaviour and experience. This factor is the sheer physical presence, and concurrent activity, of other people in the environment where one engages in individual silent reading. The primary goal of the study was to explore the role and possible associations of a number of variables (text type, purpose, device) in selecting generic (e.g. indoors vs outdoors) as well as specific (e.g. home vs library) reading environments. Across all six samples included in the study, participants spontaneously attested to varied, and partly surprising, forms of sensitivity to company and social space in their daily efforts to align body with mind for reading. The article reports these emergent trends and discusses their potential implications for research and practice.

  • Books on Screens : Players in the Swedish e-book market
  • 2017
  • Book (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • The music and film industries have long come to terms with the digital, and now the traditional printed book is challenged by digital formats. The e-book has become established in most countries, but is still a small part of the book industry. In this book a group of researchers follow the actors involved in the Swedish e-book market, from authors and publishers to libraries, booksellers and readers during 2012-2016. Using surveys, interviews and other sources the main actors were researched and it is shown how they act and react towards the e-book and towards each other. While the main focus in on Sweden as a small language country, several international comparisons are made. Are printed books disappearing soon? How are reading habits changing when the book becomes digital? Which forces are driving radical change and which are holding it back? The book discusses these and related questions and shows that after a period of rapid increase in the production and use of e-books, several factors slow down the rate of adoption, but digitisation of the book is an ongoing process and the current e-book is not the end of the story.

    • Social networking sites have become indispensable information and communication tools in everyday life. This qualitative study investigated the information-related activities and affordances of a Facebook group for foreign mothers living in Sweden. Four key information activities were identified: posting, monitoring, commenting and searching. These activities show how the group members accessed the information resources embedded within the group in a variety of visible, invisible, active and passive modes. The article concludes with a discussion of how these different modes are facilitated by the affordances of visibility, accessibility, persistence and associations.

  • In: Information Literacy in Everyday Life. - Cham : Springer. - 9783030134716 - 9783030134723 ; , s. 136-143
  • Book chapter (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • To address the research gap on age-based differences in health information literacy (HIL), we investigated how younger (born 1960–) and older adults (1946–1960), and elderly citizens (–1945) differed from each other by their HIL competencies. Data were collected with an online survey of patients using the Swedish national electronic health record system. Altogether, 2,587 users responded. One-way ANOVA with post hoc tests revealed several differences between the groups: younger adults were less likely to value health information than older adults; older adults and elderly were least likely to compare information from multiple sources and had trouble in determining health information needs; older adults were most likely to have trouble understanding health terminology and the elderly to have difficulties in understanding medicinal package labels. The study shows that HIL is not necessarily improving or declining but adapting to challenges of advanced age. © 2019, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

  • Is there alignment amongst scientific literature, news media and patient forums regarding topics?: A study of breast and lung cancer
  • 2021
  • In: Online Information Review. - 1468-4527 .- 1468-4535. ; 45:5, s. 983-999
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Purpose: During recent years, web technologies and mass media have become prevalent in the context of medicine and health. Two examples of important web technologies used in health are news media and patient forums. Both have a significant role in shaping patients' perspective and behaviour in relation to health and illness, as well as the way that they might choose or change their treatment. In this paper, the authors investigated the application of web technologies using the data analysis approach. The authors did this analysis from the point of view of topics being discussed and disseminated via patients and journalists in breast and lung cancer. The study also investigated the (dis)alignment amongst these two groups and scientists in terms of topics. Design/methodology/approach: Three data sets comprised documents published between 2014 and 2018 obtained from ProQuest and Web of Science Medline databases, alongside data from three major patient forums on breast and lung cancer. The analysis and visualisation in this paper have been done using the udpipe, igraph R packages and VOSviewer. Findings: The study’s findings showed that in general scientists focussed more on prognosis and treatment of cancer, whereas patients and journalists focussed more on detection, prevention and role of social and emotional support. The only exception was for news coverage of lung cancer where the largest cluster was related to treatment, research in cancer treatment and therapies. However, when comparing coverage by scientists and journalists in terms of treatment, the focus of news articles in both cancer types was mainly on chemotherapy and complimentary therapies. Finally, topics such as lifestyle or pain management were only discussed by breast cancer patients. Originality/value: The results obtained from this study may provide valuable insights into topics of interest for each group of scientists, journalist and patients as well as (dis)alignment among them in terms of topics. These findings are important as scientific research is heavily dependent on communication, and research does not exist in a bubble. Scientists and journalists can gain insights from patients' experiences and needs, which in turn may help them to have a more holistic and realistic view. • 2012
  • In: Scientometrics. - : Springer. - 0138-9130 .- 1588-2861. ; 92:2, s. 767-780
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • We compared three different bibliometric evaluation approaches: two citationbased approaches and one based on manual classification of publishing channels into quality levels. Publication data for two universities was used, and we worked with two levels of analysis: article and department. For the article level, we investigated the predictive power of field normalized citation rates and field normalized journal impact with respect to journal level. The results for the article level show that evaluation of journals based on citation impact correlate rather well with manual classification of journals into quality levels. However, the prediction from field normalized citation rates to journal level was only marginally better than random guessing. At the department level, we studied three different indicators in the context of research fund allocation within universities and the extent to which the three indicators produce different distributions of research funds. It turned out that the three distributions of relative indicator values were very similar, which in turn yields that the corresponding distributions of hypothetical research funds would be very similar.

  • 2018
  • In: Proceedings - 2018 IEEE 26th International Requirements Engineering Conference, RE 2018. ; , s. 52-63
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Automated traceability has been investigated for over a decade with promising results. However, a human analyst is needed to vet the generated trace links to ensure their quality. The process of vetting trace links is not trivial and while previous studies have analyzed the performance of the human analyst, they have not focused on the analyst's information needs. The aim of this study is to investigate what context information the human analyst needs. We used design science research, in which we conducted interviews with ten practitioners in the traceability area to understand the information needed by human analysts. We then compared the information collected from the interviews with existing literature. We created a prototype tool that presents this information to the human analyst. To further understand the role of context information, we conducted a controlled experiment with 33 participants. Our interviews reveal that human analysts need information from three different sources: 1) from the artifacts connected by the link, 2) from the traceability information model, and 3) from the tracing algorithm. The experiment results show that the content of the connected artifacts is more useful to the analyst than the contextual information of the artifacts.

  • 2020
  • In: Proceedings of the 18th International Symposium for Health Information Management Research. - Kalmar : Linnaeus University, University of Sheffield. - 9789189081093 ; , s. 169-178
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Despite the fact that patient accessible electronic health records (PAEHRs) have been around for many years in several countries, there is a lack of research investigating patient preferences for receiving bad news, including through PAEHRs. Little is also known about the characteristics of the patients who prefer to receive bad news through the PAEHR in terms of e.g. medical diagnosis, age and educational level. This study, based on a national patient survey in Sweden (N=2587), investigated this. Results show that, generally, receiving bad news by reading in the PAEHR is still among the least preferred options. Additionally, a higher proportion of men want to receive bad news in the PAEHR compared to women (p=0.001), and the same goes for those who are not working/have worked in healthcare (p=0.007). An effect of disease groups was also found, showing that diabetes patients in particular, want to receive bad news through the PAEHR.

  • Digital Humanities Master at Linnaeus University
  • 2017
  • In: 2nd International Symposium Digital Humanities: Empowering Visibility of Croatian Cultural Heritage. ; , s. 21-21
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Linnaeus University has been leading several big initiatives at cross-sectora and cross- disciplinary axes over the past years, with the purpose of addressing future societal challenges. Digital Humanities is one of them; it has been receiving funds since 2016. Current big focus is placed on developing a Master program in Digital Humanities. The program is considered unique in that it defines a small core of obligatory courses and a big selection of elective from any relevant discipline at the university, grouped around three major suites: humanities, technology, business and economics. Further, major feature of the program is involving external sectors to the largest degree possible. The program will be given in the international online mode, free of charge to citizens of the European Union with a completed Bachelor degree. In order to test challenges and opportunities on this new interdisciplinary program, several courses were planned to be given in 2017 and 2018. The first course titled Programming for Digital Humanities is underway. • In: Digital Transformation and Global Society. - Cham : Springer Nature Switzerland AG. - 9783030028459 - 9783030028466 ; , s. 3-18
  • Book chapter (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • In the present study, we examined the influence of personality factors and demographic factors on Internet usage. Personality was defined from the Five Factor Model of personality in terms of Openness, Conscientiousness, Extraversion, Agreeableness, and Neuroticism, while demographic factors were defined as gender, age and socioeconomic status (e.g. income and educational attainment). The results from a large, representative Swedish sample (N = 1,694) show that global Internet usage can be explained by a high degree of Extraversion, young age and high socioeconomic status. Our findings are consistent with some previous studies, but in contrast with others. We discuss contrasting results in terms of different study designs, cultures and time periods of Internet development. The results are discussed in terms of the “rich get richer model” and digital divides, and what broader implication our findings might have for society. The study may help facilitate our understanding regarding future challenges in the Internet design.

  • The intricate details of using research databases and repositories for environmental archaeology data
  • 2022
  • In: ArcheoLogica Data. - Sesto Fiorentino : All’Insegna del Giglio. - 2785-0307. ; 2, s. 15-29
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Environmental archaeology is a complex mix of empirical analysis and qualitative interpretation. It is increasingly data science oriented, and databases and online resources are becoming increasinglyimportant in large scale synthesis research on changes in climate, environments and human activities.Research funders, journals and universities place much emphasis on the use of data repositories toensure transparency and reusability in the research process. Although these are important, researchersthemselves, however, may have more use for research databases which are oriented more towardsadvanced querying and exploratory data analysis than conforming to archiving standards. This paperexplores the pros and cons of these different approaches. It also discusses and problematizes somekey concepts in research data management, including the definitions of data and metadata, along withthe FAIR principles. Research examples are provided from a broad field of environmental archaeologyand palaeoecology. In contrast to most publications, the developer’s perspective is also included, anda worked example using the Strategic Environmental Archaeology Database (SEAD) to investigate fossilbeetle data demonstrates the implementation of some of this in the real world. This example may befollowed online using the SEAD browser, and all described data downloaded from there. After providingboth encouragement and warnings on the use of digital resources for synthesis research, some suggestionsare made for moving forward.

  • Toward An Integrated Approach to Information Management : A Literature Review
  • 2017
  • In: Strategic Innovative Marketing. - Cham : Springer. - 9783319338637 - 9783319338651 ; , s. 667-673
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • In this literature review, the author examines the scholarly literature of Information Management (IM) and related fields in the recognition that information has long been an important asset for any organization. However, nowadays the work environment in organizations is more complicated due to the information overload that employees experience on a daily basis. The information deluge requires employees’ swift attention, analysis, and action within a limited time. In response, Information Management aids organizations manage information and realize its potential. This literature review reveals that scholars have given various interpretations to the term according to the perspective (organizational, library, and personal) under which Information Management is examined. Additionally, the term is often used interchangeably with other terms such as knowledge management, data management, content management, etc. Within this multidisciplinary framework, the author presents various definitions of the meaning of Information Management, including a synthesis working concept, to guide her doctoral studies. Paper conclusions recommend an integrated approach to information management which combines the organizational and the library perspective of Information Management, as advanced by Detlor. This proposal emerges out of recognition that a library is a dynamic, living information and knowledge creation organization. Fulfillment of this potential requires that information processes are integrated in librarians’ daily work life in order to contribute to organizational learning. This paper could serve as a starting point for an exploratory research study on an integrated approach for Information Management that can contribute to organizational learning in library organizations.

  • Toward a 5M Model of Digital Libraries
  • 2010
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Whereas the DELOS DRM and the 5S model of digital libraries (DL) addresses the formal side of DL, we argue that a parallel 5M model is emerging as best practice worldwide, integrating multicultural, multilingual, multimodal digital objects with multivariate statistics-based document indexing, categorization and retrieval methods. The fifth M stands for the modeling the information searching behavior of users, and of collection development. We show how an extension of the 5S model to Hilbert space (a) points toward the integration of several Ms; (b) makes the tracking of evolving semantic content feasible, and (c) leads to a field interpretation of word and sentence semantics underlying language change. First experimental results from the Strathprints e-repository verify the mathematical foundations of the 5M model.

  • 2011
  • In: International Journal on Digital Libraries. - 1432-5012 .- 1432-1300.
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Digital libraries increasingly bene t from re- search on automated text categorization for improved access. Such research is typically carried out by using standard test collections. In this paper we present a pilot experiment of replacing such test collections by a set of 6000 objects from a real-world digital repos- itory, indexed by Library of Congress Subject Head- ings, and test support vector machines in a supervised learning setting for their ability to reproduce the exist- ing classi cation. To augment the standard approach, we introduce a combination of two novel elements: us- ing functions for document content representation in Hilbert space, and adding extra semantics from lexical resources to the representation. Results suggest that wavelet-based kernels slightly outperformed traditional kernels on classi cation reconstruction from abstracts and vice versa from full-text documents, the latter out- come due to word sense ambiguity. The practical imple- mentation of our methodological framework enhances the analysis and representation of speci c knowledge relevant to large-scale digital collections, in this case the thematic coverage of the collections. Representation of speci c knowledge about digital collections is one of the basic elements of the persistent archives and the less studied one (compared to representations of digital ob- jects and collections). Our research is an initial step in this direction developing further the methodological ap- proach and demonstrating that text categorisation can be applied to analyse the thematic coverage in digital repositories.

  • Introducing Scalable Quantum Approaches in Language Representation
  • 2011
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • High-performance computational resources and distributed systems are crucial for the success of real-world language technology applications. The novel paradigm of general-purpose computing on graphics processors (GPGPU) o ers a feasible and economical alternative: it has already become a common phenomenon in scienti c computation, with many algorithms adapted to the new paradigm. However, applications in language technology do not readily adapt to this approach. Recent advances show the applicability of quantum metaphors in language representation, and many algorithms in quantum mechanics have already been adapted to GPGPU computing. SQUALAR aims to match quantum algorithms with heterogeneous computing to develop new formalisms of information representation for natural language processing in quantum environments.

  • 2009
  • Doctoral thesis (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • The purpose of the thesis is to investigate planning processes for academic library buildings and the outcomes of such processes. This is accomplished through a case study utilising discourse analysis. The main question is: How is a vision of an academic library implemented in and through a building? The case study is retrospective and focused on the building of a new library at Kalmar University, Sweden, at the end of the 1990s. During this period, technological and educational developments and general societal change transformed the context of library planning and made way for renegotiations of the librarian profession. A critical realist approach characterises the study of visions, processes and the analysis of the various functions of the building. Results reveal the proactive nature of the activities of the library director in Kalmar. Early in the process he formulated a vision in which he presents the library as an information resource, a meeting place between different user groups and a workplace intended to promote learning and knowledge. From a professional point of view, the vision implied a dehierarchisation of relations both within the library staff and between library staff and visitors. The vision was based on an interpretation of Swedish national educational policy, and architecturally manifested by an ambition to reduce the physical and psychological boundaries between library staff and visitors. The early formulation of the vision together with the clients’ use of architectural expertise facilitated the choice of architects. However during the process a need arose to anchor the decision in the library field. Efforts were made to address library expertise and to collect user comments from a broader academic field. Discourses concerning the university library as a workplace and a meeting place were especially evident in the strategies of the leading agents. The discourses uncovered in the study correspond to more general discourses which became prominent in society and higher education during the period in question. The library itself has met growing appreciation by users both from within and outside the university. The proactive leadership demonstrated by the library director in Kalmar was based on hegemony rather than coercion. This corresponds to contemporary tendencies. Hegemonic consent may persist even after changes in leadership. In Kalmar however, architectural solutions with insufficient support from the library staff have been reconstructed after changes in leadership. Future research on architectural planning processes may pay further attention to different discursive resources, social fields and the positions within them.

  • Knowledge organization for feminism and feminist research : a discourse oriented study  of systematic outlines, logical structure, semantics and the process of indexing
  • 2010
  • In: Knowledge organization. - Wurzburg : Ergon Verlag. - 0943-7444. ; 37:1, s. 3-28
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The focus in this article is directed towards an analysis of the knowledge organization systems that index and classify feminist research texts in a Swedish bibliographic context. The article also has an important mission in elucidating the methodology of my analytical framework – so it could be repeated and further used for knowledge organization (KO) research. The theoretical and analytical framework is primarily discourse theoretic. At first, a feminist discourse is defined, of which feminist research is seen as a part. Feminist perspectives are analyzed through textanalysis of PhD-dissertations as feminist articulations. I also analyze the possibilities to classify and index feminist research with the national universal knowledge organization systems (KOS); Svenska Ämnesord (SÄ) and Klassifikationssystem för svenska bibliotek (KSB), and one subject specific system; Kvinnohistoriska samlingarnas ämnesord (KvÄ). The systems are analyzed as articulations. The KOS are studied in order to discuss how they are able to articulate feminist perspectives. In the national universal systems, a severe marginalization of feminist research is noticed. Feminist discourse consisting of feminist theoretical and metatheoretical perspectives are not considered at all in the KOS. The conclusion drawn is that the KOS could not be considered as feminist articulations. The marginalization is interpreted as an objectivistic and universalistic epistemology and ontology; monodisciplinary knowledge and thematic topics are privileged. Feminism is misunderstood as a field relating to socio-political women’s issues, which has marginalized status in the systems. In the subject-specific system Kvinnohistoriska samlingarnas ämnesord incomplete and inadequate knowledge organization is shown. The structure of this index is too simplistic and feminist discourse as such is not defined. Successful organization of feminist knowledge needs to be based on a particular understanding of knowledge and knowledge organization as contextually shaped (and shaping). Feminist literature is expressing feminist discourse qua theme, perspective, and part of the feminist tradition (such as critical, women-centring, and reflexive feminisms) – which must be expressed in the knowledge organization.

  • Computational Alternatives Vignettes for Place- and Activity-Centered Digital Services in Public Libraries
  • 2020
  • In: Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems - Proceedings. - New York, NY, USA : ACM.
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • We investigate how to design community technologies for public events. We do so with a focus on technologies that give rise to new forms of participation and knowledge co-production in public libraries. Specifically, we deployed a digital service at a major public library during its four-week creative workshop series. The system offered an alternative way for people to work together as a community, to go beyond achieving individual goals, and to contribute to the achievement of public goals (e.g., building community bookshelves). We report on how the system has reconfigured physical spaces and afforded new social practices in the library. We propose Computational Alternatives as a fruitful approach for gaining situated, nuanced insights into a technology's possible adoption. We offer key insights in the form of computational alternatives vignettes - grounded stories that encapsulate sociotechnical implications of technology, pointing to plausible alternative futures.

  • Use of social media sites and readership diversity: A case study at Chalmers University of Technology
  • 2019
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Social media has provided new opportunities for academics to disseminate their research results. They allow users to upload academic papers and links to published papers, track demand for their published articles, and engage in professional discussions with other users (Meishar-Tal and Efrat Pieterse, 2017). This paper aimed to study the use of academic and non-academic profiling sites and platforms amongst scholars at Chalmers University of Technology. We were also interested in the purpose that scholars had for using these platforms. Furthermore, using data about people who register in Mendeley as readers of papers, this article explored diverse types of users of scientific papers by scholars at Chalmers. These gave us insight into the different social media platforms being used, the purpose of use, the readers’ status and their topics of interest at Chalmers. Furthermore, this helped us to provide statistics on how scholarly publications at Chalmers are used for scientific, educational, or other professional purposes.

  • Technological and informational frames : explaining age-related variation in the use of patient accessible electronic health records as technology and information
  • 2021
  • In: Information Technology and People. - : Emerald. - 0959-3845 .- 1758-5813.
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Purpose Data from a national patient survey (N = 1,155) of the Swedish PAEHR "Journalen" users were analysed, and an extended version of the theory of technological frames was developed to explain the variation in the technological and informational framing of information technologies found in the data.Design/methodology/approach Patient Accessible Electronic Health Records (PAEHRs) are implemented globally to address challenges with an ageing population. However, firstly, little is known about age-related variation in PAEHR use, and secondly, user perceptions of the PAEHR technology and the health record information and how the technology and information-related perceptions are linked to each other. The purpose of this study is to investigate these two under-studied aspects of PAEHRs and propose a framework based on the theory of technological frames to support studying the second aspect, i.e. the interplay of information and technology-related perceptions.Findings The results suggest that younger respondents were more likely to be interested in PAEHR contents for general interest. However, they did not value online access to the information as high as older ones. Older respondents were instead inclined to use medical records information to understand their health condition, prepare for visits, become involved in their own healthcare and think that technology has a much potential. Moreover, the oldest respondents were more likely to consider the information in PAEHRs useful and aimed for them but to experience the technology as inherently difficult to use.Research limitations/implications The sample excludes non-users and is not a representative sample of the population of Sweden. However, although the data contain an unknown bias, there are no specific reasons to believe that it would differently affect the survey’s age groups.Practical implications Age should be taken into account as a key factor that influences perceptions of the usefulness of PAEHRs. It is also crucial to consider separately patients’ views of PAEHRs as a technology and of the information contained in the EHR when developing and evaluating existing and future systems and information provision for patients.Social implications This study contributes to bridging the gap between information behaviour and systems design research by showing how the theory of technological frames complemented with parallel informational frames to provide a potentially powerful framework for elucidating distinct conceptualisations of (information) technologies and the information they mediate. The empirical findings show how information and information technology needs relating to PAEHRs vary according to age. In contrast to the assumptions in much of the earlier work, they need to be addressed separately.Originality/value Few earlier studies focus on (1) age-related variation in PAEHR use and (2) user perceptions of the PAEHR technology and the health record information and how the technology and information-related perceptions are linked to each other.

  • In: Scientometrics. - : Akademiai Kiado. - 0138-9130 .- 1588-2861. ; 102:3, s. 2255-2274
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • We describe ongoing research where the aim is to apply recent results from the research field of information fusion to bibliometric analysis and information retrieval. We highlight the importance of ‘uncertainty’ within information fusion and argue that this concept is crucial also for bibliometrics and information retrieval. More specifically, we elaborate on three research strategies related to uncertainty: uncertainty management methods, explanation of uncertainty and visualization of uncertainty. We exemplify our strategies to the classical problem of author name disambiguation where we show how uncertainty can be modeled explained and visualized using information fusion. We show how an information seeker can benefit from tracing increases/decreases of uncertainty in the reasoning process. We also present how such changes can be explained for the information seeker through visualization techniques, which are employed to highlight the complexity involved in the process of modeling and managing uncertainty in bibliometric analysis. Finally we argue that a further integration of information fusion approaches in the research area of bibliometrics and information retrieval may results in new and fruitful venues of research.

  • Cloudy talks : Exploring accounts about cloud computing
  • 2017
  • Doctoral thesis (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • The aim of this thesis is to discuss the character, purpose, and use of the language surrounding new technology, specifically cloud computing. The thesis is situated within library and information science. Its theoretical basis and argumentation builds upon notions articulated by Berger and Luckmann (1966), known as “the social construction of reality”, and upon conceptual metaphor theory developed by Lakoff and Johnson (2003). The thesis discusses the consequences of how cloud computing is explained and legitimised by various actors, such as cloud providers, computer scientists, IT professionals, business leaders, and strategic staff in organisations that had implemented cloud services. It builds on four articles that are based on diverse empirical materials and methods.A starting point is that IT has been talked about as neutral and unobtrusive. Instead, the results of this thesis show that accounts about IT hide its complexity both regarding its implementation and use. Talk about computing as a utility from the 1950s and forward was surprisingly precise in predictions concerning future IT. However, rather than accepting such accounts as communicating clear insights, it can be argued that this use of language led to the legitimation and institutionalisation of certain normative ways to talk about IT. The utility metaphor could, therefore, be seen as a powerful persuasive device, guiding changes in policies and investments. In today’s promulgation of cloud technologies by Google, Apple, Facebook and Amazon, the four internet giants sometimes referred to as GAFA, it is possible to distinguish the extension of the utility metaphor into images of power, choice, and a transformed life, while complexity issues are considerably downplayed.Societies, organisations, and individuals all over the world are now, more than ever before, connected to the internet through various cloud technologies. Scrutinised in the thesis are accounts about Google Apps for Education (GAFE), a suite of cloud-based apps increasingly introduced in schools in Sweden and all over the globe. These cloud services are described as free and able to fulfil various user needs. This persuasive promulgation, together with various rhetorical strategies in their privacy policies, disguises the circumstance that Google exploits user information for its own business purposes by creating algorithmic identities of users based on individual web behaviour. With customers’ utilisation, cloud providers such as Google can act powerfully from a distance. As they develop remote control through their widespread cloud technology, they can affect individuals, businesses, and society at large. In this and other ways, IT will continue to reshape communication, the way people relate to each other, and to themselves.

  • 2009
  • In: European Sociological Association, ESA 9th conference, 2-5 September, 2009, Lisbon.
  • Conference paper (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • There is a need to better understand the organizational factors influencing innovative performance. This cross-cultural study examined organizational support factors in biotech R&D groups differing in innovative performance. The objective was to twofold; first to explore how organizing influences innovativeness in R&D, and, second to examine if R&D organizing is related to nations having a low and high innovation degree, respectively. Results supported that organizing R&D as well as national innovation performance are related. Crucial organizational issues found were how much organizations encouraged innovations, the degree of perceived autonomy and to what extent organizations could supply knowledge. Some of the implications of these results are introduced.
