  • Approximating Linear Threshold Predicates
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Lecture Notes in Computer Science. 13th International Workshop on Approximation Algorithms for Combinatorial Optimization Problems, APPROX 2010 and 14th International Workshop on Randomization and Computation, RANDOM 2010, Barcelona, 1-3 September 2010. - Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin Heidelberg. - 0302-9743 .- 1611-3349. - 9783642153686 ; 6302, s. 110-123
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We study constraint satisfaction problems on the domain {-1,1}, where the given constraints are homogeneous linear threshold predicates. That is, predicates of the form sgn(w1 x1+⋯+wn x n ) for some positive integer weights w 1, ..., w n . Despite their simplicity, current techniques fall short of providing a classification of these predicates in terms of approximability. In fact, it is not easy to guess whether there exists a homogeneous linear threshold predicate that is approximation resistant or not. The focus of this paper is to identify and study the approximation curve of a class of threshold predicates that allow for non-trivial approximation. Arguably the simplest such predicate is the majority predicate sgn(x 1+⋯+xn ), for which we obtain an almost complete understanding of the asymptotic approximation curve, assuming the Unique Games Conjecture. Our techniques extend to a more general class of "majority-like" predicates and we obtain parallel results for them. In order to classify these predicates, we introduce the notion of Chow-robustness that might be of independent interest.

  • A Principled Approach to Tracking Information Flow in the Presence of Libraries
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Lecture Notes in Computer Science (including subseries Lecture Notes in Artificial Intelligence and Lecture Notes in Bioinformatics). - Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin Heidelberg. - 1611-3349 .- 0302-9743. - 9783662544549 ; 10204, s. 49-70
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • There has been encouraging progress on information flow control for programs in increasingly complex programming languages, tracking the propagation of information from input sources to output sinks. Yet, programs are typically deployed in an environment with rich APIs and powerful libraries, posing challenges for information flow control when the code for these APIs and libraries is either unavailable or written in a different language. This paper presents a principled approach to tracking information flow in the presence of libraries. With the goal to strike the balance between security and precision, we present a framework that explores the middle ground between the “shallow”, signature-based modeling of libraries and the “deep”, stateful approach, where library models need to be supplied manually. We formalize our approach for a core language, extend it with lists and higher-order functions, and establish soundness results with respect to the security condition of noninterference.

  • 2016 Workshop on Exascale Multi/Many Core Computing Systems (E-MuCoCoS)
  • 2016
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Exascale computing will revolutionize computational science and engineering by providing 1000x the capabilities of currently available computing systems, while having a similar power footprint. The HPC community is working towards the development of the first Exaflop computer after reaching the Petaflop milestone in 2008. There are concerns that computer designs based on existing multi-core and many-core solutions will not scale to Exascale considering technical challenges (such as, productivity, energy consumption or reliability) and reasonable economic constraints. Therefore, novel multi-core and many-core solutions are required to reach Exascale. The E-MuCoCoS workshop series focuses on multi/many core languages, system software and architectural solutions for extreme-scale systems towards Exascale.

  • MPI Trace Compression Using Event Flow Graphs
  • 2014
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Understanding how parallel applications behave is crucial for using high-performance computing (HPC) resources efficiently. However, the task of performance analysis is becoming increasingly difficult due to the growing complexity of scientific codes and the size of machines. Even though many tools have been developed over the past years to help in this task, current approaches either only offer an overview of the application discarding temporal information, or they generate huge trace files that are often difficult to handle. In this paper we propose the use of event flow graphs for monitoring MPI applications, a new and different approach that balances the low overhead of profiling tools with the abundance of information available from tracers. Event flow graphs are captured with very low overhead, require orders of magnitude less storage than standard trace files, and can still recover the full sequence of events in the application. We test this new approach with the NERSC-8/Trinity Benchmark suite and achieve compression ratios up to 119x.

  • Combining local and grid resources in scientific workflows (for Bioinformatics)
  • 2009
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We examine some issues that arise when using both local and Gridresources in scientific workflows. Our previous work addresses and illustratesthe benefits of a light-weight and generic workflow engine that manages andoptimizes Grid resource usage. Extending on this effort, we hereillustrate how a client tool for bioinformatics applications employs the engine tointerface with Grid resources. We also explore how to define data flowsthat transparently integrates local and Grid subworkflows. In addition, the benefits of parameter sweep workflows are examined and a means for describing this type of workflows in an abstract and concise manner is introduced. Finally, the above mechanisms are employed to perform an orthology detection analysis.

  • The Steiner tree reoptimization problem with sharpenedtriangle inequality
  • 2010
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, we deal with several reoptimization variants of the Steiner tree problem in graphs obeying a sharpened β-triangle inequality. A reoptimization algorithm exploits theknowledge of an optimal solution to a problem instance for finding good solutions for a locally modified instance. We show that, in graphs satisfying a sharpened triangleinequality (and even in graphs where edge-costs are restricted to the values 1 and 1∈+∈γ for an arbitrary small γ>∈0), Steiner tree reoptimization still is NP-hard for several different types of local modifications, and even APX-hard for some of them. As for theupper bounds, for some local modifications, we design linear-time (1/2∈+∈β)-approximation algorithms, and even polynomial-time approximation schemes, whereas for metric graphs (β=∈1), none of these reoptimization variants is known to permit a PTAS. As a building block for some of these algorithms, we employ a 2β-approximation algorithm for the classical Steiner tree problem on such instances, which might be of independent interest since it improves over the previously best known ratio for any β∈<∈1/2∈+∈ln (3)/4∈≈∈0.775.

  • Modelling Support for Design of Safety-Critical Automotive Embedded Systems
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 27th International Conference on Computer Safety, Reliability and Security, 2008.. - Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin Heidelberg.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper describes and demonstrates an approach that promises to bridge the gap between model-based systems engineering and the safety process of automotive embedded systems. The basis for this is the integration of safety analysis techniques, a method for developing and managing Safety Cases, and a systematic approach to model-based engineering - the EAST-ADL2 architecture description language. Three areas are highlighted: (I) System model development on different levels of abstraction. This enables fulfilling many requirements on software development as specified by ISO-CD-26262 (2) Safety Case development in close connection to the system model (3) Analysis of mal-functional behaviour that may cause hazards, by modelling of errors and error propagation in a (complex and hierarchical) system model.

  • Monads can be rough
  • 2006
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Traditionally, rough sets build upon relations based on ordinary sets, i.e. relations on X as subsets of X x X. A starting point of this paper is the equivalent view on relations as mappings from X to the (ordinary) power set PX. Categorically, P is a set functor, and even more so, it can in fact be extended to a monad (P,eta,mu). This is still not enough and we need to consider the partial order (PX, <=). Given this partial order, the ordinary power set monad can be extended to a partially ordered monad. The partially ordered ordinary power set monad turns out to contain sufficient structure in order to provide rough set operations. However, the motivation of this paper goes far beyond ordinary relations as we show how more general power sets, i.e. partially ordered monads built upon a wide range of set functors, can be used to provide what we call rough monads.

  • Iterative Multi-mode Discretization : Applications to Co-clustering
  • 2020
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We introduce a new concept called “Iterative Multi-Mode Discretization (IMMD)” which is a new type of efficient data sparsification that can scale up many tasks in data mining. In this paper we demonstrate the application of IMMD in co-clustering, i.e. simultaneous clustering of the rows and columns in a matrix. We propose IMMD-CC, a novel co-clustering algorithm, which is developed based on IMMD. IMMD-CC has attractive properties. First, its time complexity is linear, so it can be used in large-scale problems. In addition, IMMD-CC is able to estimate the number of co-clusters automatically, and more accurate than state-of-the-art methods. We demonstrate the performance of IMMD-CC in comparison to several state-of-the-art methods on 100 data sets from a benchmark cohort, as well as 35 real-world datasets. The results show the promising potential of the proposed method.

  • Barriers to Adopting E-commerce in Chinese Rural Areas : A Case Study
  • 2017
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Although e-commerce has been adopted and developed rapidly in rural areas in China during the past two years, serious issues have been encountered as well. Practitioners and scientists proposed lists of barriers. However, such lists differ with each other for different regions and at different time. Fixed lists may not help much practically. Present research proposes a framework named N3F4 to structure and formalize such barriers. Based on the framework, researchers could make a list of barriers for a given region, perform surveys among interested people, prioritize the barriers, analyze reasons and propose solutions. In this paper, we introduce the N3F4 framework, and present a case study of applying the framework in one small county in China. The result shows that the N3F4 framework helps structure barriers before performing the survey, and it also helps analyze the result and come up with solutions afterwards, both effectively and efficiently.

  • Ontology Learning from Software Requirements Specification
  • 2017
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Learning ontologies from software requirements specifications with individuals and relations between individuals to represent detailed information, such as input, condition and expected result of a requirement, is a difficult task. System specification ontologies (SSOs) can be developed from software requirement specifications to represent requirements and can be used to automate some time-consuming activities in software development processes. However, manually developing SSOs to represent requirements and domain knowledge of a software system is a time-consuming and a challenging task. The focus of this PhD is how to create ontologies semi-automatically from SRS. We will develop a framework that can be a possible solution to create semi-automatically ontologies from SRS. The developed framework will mainly be evaluated by using the constructed ontologies in the software testing process and automating a part of it. i.e. test case generation.

  • Requirement Decomposition and Testability in Development of Safety-Critical Automotive Components
  • 2012
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • 2ISO26262 is a recently approved standard for functional safety in road vehicles. It provides guidelines on minimization of unreasonable safety risks during development of embedded systems in road vehicles. However, the development process specified in ISO26262 involves a number of steps that will require changing traditional and well established development processes. In a transition phase, however, due to lack of tool support, the steps may be performed manually, increasing the risk for delays and increased cost. This paper describes a case study in which we have successfully worked with traceability and testability of functional safety requirements, as well as safety requirements assigned to a testing tool that automates integration and verification steps, leading to standard-compliant tool qualification. Our tool qualification method employs fault injection as a validation method to increase confidence in the tool. Our case study will help to avoid many of the new pitfalls that can arise when attempting to realize standard-compliant development.

  • An Architecture-Based Verification Technique for AADL Specifications
  • 2011
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Quality assurance processes of software-intensive systems are an increasing challenge as the complexity of these systems dramatically increases. The use of Architecture Description Languages (ADLs) provide an important basis for evaluation. The Architecture Analysis and Design Language (AADL) is an ADL developed for designing software intensive systems. In this paper, we propose an architecture-based verification technique covering the entire development process by adapting a combination of model-checking and model-based testing approaches to AADL specifications. The technique reveals inconsistencies of early design decisions and ensures a system's conformity with its AADL specification. The objective and criteria (test-selection) of the verification technique is derived from traditional integration testing.

  • Semi-automated annotation of phasic electromyographic activity
  • 2014
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Recent research on manual/visual identification of phasic muscle activity utilizing the phasic electromyographic metric (PEM) in human polysomnograms (PSGs) cites evidence that PEM is a potentially reliable quantitative metric to assist in distinguishing between neurodegenerative disorder populations and age-matched controls. However, visual scoring of PEM activity is time consuming-preventing feasible implementation within a clinical setting. Therefore, here we propose an assistive/semi-supervised software platform designed and tested to automatically identify and characterize PEM events in a clinical setting that will be extremely useful for sleep physicians and technicians. The proposed semi-automated approach consists of four levels: A) Signal Parsing, B) Calculation of quantitative features on candidate PEM events, C) Classification of PEM and non-PEM events using a linear classifier, and D) Post-processing/Expert feedback to correct/remove automated misclassifications of PEM and Non-PEM events. Performance evaluation of the designed software compared to manual labeling is provided for electromyographic (EMG) activity from the PSG of a control subject. Results indicate that the semi-automated approach provides an excellent benchmark that could be embedded into a clinical decision support system to detect PEM events that would be used in neurological disorder identification and treatment.

  • E-books in Swedish public libraries : policy implications
  • 2013
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aims of the paper are: review the situation of e-books delivery in the Swedish public libraries (as it looked at the end of 2012); identify the barriers that public libraries encounter in providing access to e-books; highlight the policy-related problems of e-book provision through public libraries. A survey was carried out in October, 2012 of all public libraries in Sweden. 291 questionnaires were issued. 185 were completed, response rate was 63.3%. The provision of an e-book service has arisen as a result of either demand or an ideological belief that the ethos of democratic values and equality of access requires libraries to offer material in all media. Librarians find the situation of e-books provision through libraries unsatisfactory: the provider of titles removes them from the catalogue without warning or explanation, there are too few titles for children and students, and access to popular titles is delayed.

  • Ingår i: AIME 2019. - Cham : Springer. - 9783030216429 - 9783030216412 ; , s. 420-424
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a chronic neurodegenerative disorder that predominantly affects the patient’s motor system, resulting in muscle rigidity, bradykinesia, tremor, and postural instability. As the disease slowly progresses, the symptoms worsen, and regular monitoring is required to adjust the treatment accordingly. The objective evaluation of the patient’s condition is sometimes rather difficult and automated systems based on various sensors could be helpful to the physicians. The data in this paper come from a clinical study of 19 advanced PD patients with motor fluctuations. The measurements used come from the motion sensors the patients wore during the study. The paper presents an unsupervised learning approach applied on this data with the aim of checking whether sensor data alone can indicate the patient’s motor state. The rationale for the unsupervised approach is that there was significant inter-physician disagreement on the patient’s condition (target value for supervised machine learning). The input to clustering came from sensor data alone. The resulting clusters were matched against the physicians’ estimates showing relatively good agreement.
