  • Development and Modernity in Hofstede's Culture's Consequences: A Postcolonial Reading
  • 2006
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Along with an increasingly globalized business environment and a strongly held corporate belief that the world can be rationally managed, the last two decades have witnessed a growing demand for normative models dealing with cross-cultural management issues. This trend has allowed cross-cultural management to establish itself as a significant research field, with much of the initial inspiration coming from Hofstede and his cultural model from 1980. In this paper, our intention is not to merely repeat the already formulated objections to the latter model concerning its ontology, epistemology and methodology, but rather to focus on the very words of Hofstede himself in his second edition of Culture’s Consequences (2001), which he wrote partly in order to address the criticisms that his work received in the previous twenty years and to demonstrate that his findings are still valid. Our main aim here will be to explore how the discourse generated by Hofstede through his model and his comments on his results constructs the world by dividing it especially according to dichotomies of 'development'/'underdevelopment' and 'modernity'/'tradition'.

  • Resistance to change: Four interpretations
  • 2010
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Although the phenomenon of resistance to change has gained considerable attention in organization theory over the years, the meaning of the concept is rarely discussed. In this paper, a conceptual framework is suggested that distinguishes between four interpretations of resistance and builds upon the two variables of changeability and emotionality. Each interpretation is based on various assumptions and theoretical influences, as well as connected to different change management strategies. The framework can facilitate communication pertaining to resistance across different theoretical perspectives and help explain empirical observations related to resistance and change management strategies. Finally, observations from two case studies reveal that assumptions about resistance can shift in the course of a change process, thus indicating a dynamic dimension to the framework.

  • Desiring Agency
  • 2007
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In this paper we explore the relation between agency and the (pathological) inclinations that lurk beneath the agent’s acts. We draw on the work of Jacques Lacan to argue that an adequate understanding of agency demands attentiveness to desires, the unconscious and the intimate relation between the subject and the Other. Based on some of the key features of the Lacanian subject we suggest agency to be (1) symbolic, (2) imaginary, or (3) ethical. This typology of agency, we argue, has far-reaching implications for social analysis in which we include the project of critical management studies.

  • On the relationship between economic rent and profit
  • 2009
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The question of who appropriates the economic rents created by resources and capabilities has remained largely unresolved in strategic management. The aim of this paper is to highlight the problem established strategic management theory faces in explaining value appropriation, and to propose a framework that addresses how R&C affect bargaining power and value appropriation. While resource-based theory focuses on the generation and sustainability of economic rents, the appropriation factor framework presented in this paper shows that particular resources and capabilities, termed appropriation factors, affect bargaining power, and thus the possibility for economic agents of appropriating a larger share of rents. Based on this framework, it is argued that investments in heterogeneous and immobile appropriation factors that facilitate value appropriation through elevated bargaining power can constitute an alternative avenue to sustained competitive advantage.

  • The Language of Failure: Verbal Accounts in Financial Reports
  • 2012
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The natural language that accompanies the accounting language in financial reports is not only a biased representation of the company, but also, we argue, a response to explicit as well as implicit external demands, expectations and accusations. Drawing on the notion of accounts, i.e. statements or responses that neutralizes critique caused by performance not meeting expectations, we analyze the natural language in financial reports. The taxonomy of accounts includes ‘excuses’, ‘justifications’, ‘concessions’, ‘refusals’, ‘mystifications’, ‘silence’ and ‘refocusing’. In analyzing financial reports with the use of account theory, both individual actions and structurally anchored financial report discourse is approached. Our results suggest there being three general types of accounts in financial reports: (i) legally required accounts required by law or standard (ii) institutionalized accounts not formally regulated but commonly accepted, and (iii) ad hoc accounts that are unique for the individual company or situation. The theory of account giving in situations of evaluations and critique helps us to discern the fine-grained anatomy of financial reports by means of which impressions are managed, legitimacy is uphold and conversations between companies and their public is maintained. The accounts presented in financial reports can, we argue, be understood as a way of maintaining the order of communication that has in effect been threatened by the account situation.

  • Nonlinear Pricing under a Balanced-Budget Requirement: The n-Type Case
  • 2004
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • An economy consisting of n>=2 different types of consumers and one publicly owned natural monopoly is under consideration. The preferences of the consumers are assumed to be linear in money and the demand curves are assumed not to cross. We also suppose that the net utility from consumption is so high that we do not have to consider the individual rationality constraints. Given these assumptions, we completely characterize the set of budget-balanced and Pareto efficient nonlinear pricing schedules. This complete characterization has only been presented in the two-type case before

  • Farmers as innovators
  • 2005
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This working paper analyses the mindset and driving forces of innovators in the agricultural sector. The key drivers and incentives are different in this group than for the innovators from academic institution. Therefor the interaction with risk capital providers becomes problematic.

  • Agility in entrepreneurial projects
  • 2009
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Managing entrepreneurship is of importance for the society, for organizations and for the individual. It is not enough with knowledge and skills relating to the idea behind entrepreneurship. The entrepreneur must have knowledge and skills to manage the entrepreneurial process. The purpose of this paper is to put forward for agile project management as an appropriate way to manage an entrepreneurial project. Agile project management can be used descriptively to structure the entrepreneurial project and prescriptively to guide entrepreneurs in setting and maintaining project alignment and in doing so increase the chance of success in entrepreneurship. The findings of the paper will also help actors in organizations and on societal level to support entrepreneurs in an appropriate way.

  • Management of multi-projects in a process oriented organization
  • 2006
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • When projects are used as an organisational platform to conduct business, a project can be the only project in the organisation or one amongst several others. The latter case is called multi-project organisation. Usually an organization with a multi-project environment has a base organisation, which can be functional, matrix structure or another. The purpose of this article is to develop a model based on a process oriented organization as a complement to functional or matrix organizational structures. The article is written from a management point of view. Management of Multi-projects in a process-oriented organisation is analysed from a strategic point of view as well as from an operational point of view. Theoretical conclusions as well as practical recommendations are presented.

  • Managing Project complexity - a managerial view
  • 2004
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In this paper we are investigating how project complexity is affecting the management of single projects in a multi-project environment. The project manager’s perspective is applied. A conceptual framework is developed in order to summarize how project complexity effect project management. The framework is applied to two cases and conclusions are drawn.

  • Exploring the role of experience in the process of entrepreneurial learning
  • 2005
  • Rapport (populärvet., debatt m.m.)abstract
    • Researchers have recently showed an increasing interest in understanding entrepreneurship as an experiential learning process. In this article, we investigate the role of prior career experience for the development of entrepreneurial knowledge, i.e., knowledge that facilitates for individuals to recognize and act on opportunities as well as to organize and manage new ventures. Based on an analysis of 291 Swedish entrepreneurs we find links between various career experiences and the development of entrepreneurial knowledge. In addition we also find evidence that the entrepreneurs’ preference for exploring new possibilities vs. exploiting pre-existing knowledge are important to consider to explain this process. The study ends with a discussion of the findings, together with suggestions for future research.

  • The (Non-)Significance of Quantitative Research: The Demise of Popper in View of Publication Norms
  • 2004
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This paper argues that there is a norm in the publication of quantitative management research that accepted hypotheses are conceived of as good hypotheses. This has far-reaching implications for quantitative research in that, in the worst case scenario, this norm encourages commonsensical research questions and manipulation of data in order for an article to be published. Naturally, such behavior is not otherwise encouraged by the research community and, therefore, there is not even transparency in the decisions that are made. Instead, the choices that are made in the course of a research process (both in terms of how variables are operationalized and in terms of how results can be interpreted) are down-played unless in cases where hypotheses are rejected. Sample- and instrument-issues are then the most frequently used excuses for non-expected findings. Rather than trying to live up to demands set outside the social sciences (and failing), this paper calls for more reflexivity in quantitative management studies. The world is a messy place and so is our data.
