  • Real-valued Syntactic Word Vectors (RSV) for Greedy Neural Dependency Parsing
  • 2017
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We show that a set of real-valued word vectors formed by right singular vectors of a transformed co-occurrence matrix are meaningful for determining different types of dependency relations between words. Our experimental results on the task of dependency parsing confirm the superiority of the word vectors to the other sets of word vectors generated by popular methods of word embedding. We also study the effect of using these vectors on the accuracy of dependency parsing in different languages versus using more complex parsing architectures.

  • Studying Disability Related Terms with Swe-Clarin Resources
  • 2019
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In Swedish, as in other languages, the words used to refer to disabilities and people with disabilities are manifold. Recommendations as to which terms to use have been changed several times over the last hundred years. In this exploratory paper we have used textual resources provided by Swe-Clarin to study such changes quantitatively. We demonstrate that old and new recommendations co-exist for long periods of time, and that usage sometimes converges.

  • Codex and Code : Aestethcis, Language and Politics in an Age of Digital Media, NORLIT 2009, Stockholm, August 6-9, 2009
  • 2010
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The conference Codex and Code: Aesthetics, Language and Politics in an Age of Digital Media (NorLit 2009)was held at the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) in Stockholm, August 6–9, 2009. The conference was organized by the Nordic Association for Comparative Literature (NorLit); the Department of Culture and Communication, Linköping University; the School of Computer Science and Communication, Royal Institute of Technology (KTH); the Department of Comparative Literature, Stockholm University; the Department of Culture and Communication, Södertörn University College; and the Department of Comparative Literature, Uppsala University.    The aim of the conference was to develop the study of Comparative Literature through Nordic collaboration both in its own discipline and in Modern Language and Cultural studies. As the title for the conference suggests, the principal question for the conference was the challenge that the study of literature encounters in an age of digitalization and globalization. It was our aim to encourage discussion of how literary studies respond to the ongoing changes in media and technology, politics and economy. Many have argued that the Humanities currently are in a state of crisis. We believe that the discipline seldom has found itself in such an interesting and fruitful historical moment. Several of these questions have surfaced during earlier media system changes, in particular during Romanticism and Modernism, which provided the conference with an historical frame. The conference Codex and Code also addressed questions of authenticity and originality, identity and gender, literary genres and reading practices, media and materiality, culture and popular culture, language and history, world literature, work aesthetics, translations, and canon formation.    The conference Codex and Code wanted to stimulate interdisciplinary scholarly research of the literary in a broad sense. The conference was open to scholars in Comparative Literature and in Classical and Modern Languages, Aesthetics, Media and Communication studies, Film and Theatre studies, Philosophy and adjacent disciplines. The conference was organized around a number of thematic sessions in which researchers and scholars presented and discussed papers.    The conference has received generous financial support from the Bank of Sweden Tercentenary Foundation, Magnus Bergwall foundation, Granholms foundation, Linköping University, School of Computer Science and Communication, Royal Institute of Technology, Svenska litteratursällskapet; the Swedish Academy, Swedish Science Council, and Vitterhetsakademien.

  • PastVision: Exploring “Seeing” into the Near Past with Thermal Touch Sensing and Object Detection – For Robot Monitoring of Medicine Intake by Dementia Patients
  • 2017
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present PastVision, a proof-of-concept approach that explores combining thermal touch sensing and object detection to infer recent actions by a person which have not been directly observed by a system. Inferring such past actions has received little attention yet in the literature, but would be highly useful in scenarios in which sensing can fail (e.g., due to occlusions) and the cost of not recognizing an action is high. In particular, we focus on one such application, involving a robot which should monitor if an elderly person with dementia has taken medicine. For this application, we explore how to combine detection of touches and objects, as well as how heat traces vary based on materials and a person’s grip, and how robot motions and activity models can be leveraged. The observed results indicate promise for the proposed approach.

  • Current Issues in European Cultural Studies, June 15–17, Norrköping, Sweden 2011
  • 2011
  • Proceedings (redaktörskap) (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In June 2011 ACSIS arranged its fourth biennial conference on cultural research, this time on the subject “Current Issues in European Cultural Studies”. The conference provided an updated inventory of main issues in European cultural studies today, covering cross-European topics and trends as well as regional developments in East, West, South, North and Central Europé.The program had three main levels. First, a series of plenary sessions dealt with selected key current issues for cultural studies that partly connected to European perspectives and partly reached beyond this geographic scope. Second, a set of spotlight sessions opened up for presentations and debates on the state of cultural studies in different regions of Europé, leading up to a final plenary discussing whether EU’s motto “united in diversity” is also applicable to European cultural studies. Finally, about 200 cultural studies scholars from all over the world came together to present their own research in more than 30 parallel sessions. You can find the details on the participants in the Statistics for 2011 and if you really like figures you find statistics for all conferences in Statistics 2005-2011.The conference was supported by Riksbankens Jubileumsfond, Wenner-Gren Foundations, the Faculty of Arts and Sciences of Linköping University and the City of Norrköping.

  • Equality, Growth and Sustainability : Do They Mix?
  • 2010
  • Proceedings (redaktörskap) (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The conference Equality, Growth and Sustainability – Do They Mix? was made possible through initiatives, joint efforts and collaboration between actors representing JÄMI, VINNOVA, FAS, Thematic Group on Equality, NIKK, Tema Genus and Forum for Gender Studies and Equality at Linköping University. The conference created an opportunity for academics, practitioners as well as policy makers to meet and discuss if and how questions of equality, growth and sustainability can be reconciled in organisations and implemented in general practice. 15 years after the Beijing Platform for  Action the conference provided academics, policy makers and practitioners with an international and interdisciplinary forum for exchange. The purpose was to explore and disseminate knowledge and experiences on gender equality, gender mainstreaming, diversity management, growth and sustainability, inclusion and equal opportunities. The ambition was to discuss these key concepts and issues from an intersectional perspective, and in theory and practice, in order to rethink and find new ways to move on. The conference provided new research results, policy discussions and presented new ideas on how to advance the practical and theoretical work through collaborative/joint ventures between academia and society. The conference consituted a mix of presentations and discussions with the 165 participants, from all over the world. The interactive conference format contained eight interactive workshops and eleven parallell paper sessions, see appendix. The paper sessions contained academic paper presentetions while the workshops offered forums for listening practioners’ presentations and taking part in discussions. The four key note speakers, as well as the concluding panel, addressed and discussed the conference topics from their view points as policy makers, researchers and/or practitioners. Key note speakers included Ms Viviane Reding, Vice-President of the European Commission; Mieke Verloo, Professor of Comparative Politics and Inequality Issues at Radboud University Nijmegen; Jeff Hearn, Professor in Gender Studies with a focus on critical studies on men at Linköping university and Tryggvi Hallgrimsson from the Center of Gender Equality, Iceland. The workshop was hosted by Linköping University´s Forum for Gender Studies and Equality.Funding was provided by JÄMI at Swedish Secretariat for Gender Research, Swedish Governmental Agency for Innovation Systems/VINNOVA, Swedish Council for Working Life and Social Research/FAS, Thematic Group on Equality, Faculty of Arts and Sciences at Linköping University, Swedish Association of Local Authorities and Regions/SALAR/SKL, and Wenner-Gren Foundations. The majority of the paper authors have chosen to contribute to this document, which presents the proceedings from the conference.

  • Empowering the Unprivileged : The Case of Self-renovation in Disadvantaged Areas
  • 2011
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In the 90’s; several European governments promoted the involvement of inhabitants as an important condition of success in urban regeneration projects. The dialogue with inhabitants was supposed to strengthen a collective movement in the neighbourhoods; to restore social and territorial cohesion and create a local identity among the residents of disadvantaged areas. However; a number of issues can be raised regarding this policy: the commitment of the inhabitants in the decision-making process is difficult to ascertain; especially throughout the whole duration of the project; and in relation to the management of the different stages of the project; it is not always easy to achieve consensus; etc. In particular; it is hard for the project managers to involve the most unprivileged groups; notably people suffering from a combination of social; legal and financial problems. The stake here is not simply their participation in a project; but more specifically their “empowerment”. In this framework; the methods of the French non-profit organization Les Compagnons Bâtisseurs are instructive. They provide micro solutions to people living in poor housing conditions through the conception and the implementation of a self-renovation process. The organization proposes technical and financial support so that the most disadvantaged groups can renovate their flats. However; the goal is not only to ameliorate the material living conditions; through the organization of workshops in the neighbourhood; the participation of the inhabitants in the renovation work; the coordination between the team of Compagnons Bâtisseurs and social workers; the social inclusion of the most unprivileged groups can be promoted.

  • Towards a Benchmark Suite for Modelica Compilers: Large Models
  • 2011
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The paper presents a contribution to a Modelica benchmark suite. Basic ideas for a tool independent benchmark suite based on Python scripting along with models for testing the performance of Modelica compilers regarding large systems of equation are given. The automation of running the benchmark suite is demonstrated followed by a selection of benchmark results to determine the current limits of Modelica tools and how they scale for an increasing number of equations.

  • Towards a Modular and Accessible Modelica Compiler Backend
  • 2011
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Modelica is well suited for modelling complex physical systems due to the acausal description it is using. The causalisation of the model is carried out prior to each simulation. A significant part of the causalisation process is the symbolic manipulation and optimisation of the model. Despite the growing interest in Modelica, the capabilities of symbolic manipulation and optimisation are not fully utilized. This paper presents an approach to increase the customisability, access, and reuse of symbolic optimisation by a more modular and flexible design concept. An overview of the common symbolic manipulation and optimisation algorithms of a typical Modelica compiler is presented as well as a general modular design concept for a Modelica compiler backend. The modularisation concept will be implemented in a future version of the OpenModelica compiler.

  • Vad är kulturpolitik? : Professionellt, smalt och okontroversiellt?
  • 2009

  • Three perspectives on inclusive Service Design : user-centred, adaptive systems, and service logics
  • 2020
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • How do we design services that are inclusive and accessible to a wide variety of users (e.g. people with disabilities, of different ethnical backgrounds, of different genders)? Inclusive design has been extensively researched in product design and architecture, but less has been done in the area of service design. We will, in this conceptual paper, describe and discuss a plurality of perspectives on inclusive service design. The first perspective explores user-centred design and describes it as an umbrella covering a multitude of user groups. The second perspective takes an adaptive systems perspective to manage a variability in users. The third perspective uses service logics to describe inclusive service design in terms of resource integration. The different perspectives also come with their own tensions. It is concluded that a plurality of perspectives can contribute to a rich understanding of how to approach inclusive and accessible design of services

  • Modelling and Control of a Complementary Energy Recuperation System for Mobile Working Machines
  • 2013
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The concept of hybrid technologies for mobile working machines has gained increased attention in recent years. This paper deals with a parallel hybrid system for energy recuperation based on a two-machine hydraulic transformer. The system can be connected hydraulically to an existing hydraulic circuit as a complementary add-on system. The linear analysis of the system visualises the control difficulties coming from a low inertia, slow control dynamics of the machines and the non-linear stick-slip friction during low speeds. A control strategy based on linear control methods is proposed and evaluated in a hardware test bench. It is shown that an acceptable performance can be achieved even with fairly simple models. Additionally, a start-up procedure is proposed to start the transformer from zero speed

  • Proceedings (redaktörskap) (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • ”Inter: A European Cultural Studies Conference in Sweden” took place in Norrköping, Sweden, 11–13 June, 2007. It was organised by the Advanced Cultural Studies Institute of Sweden (ACSIS), Linköping University’s national centre for interdisciplinary and transnational networking in this research field. Some 240 scholars participated from many parts of the world, with papers in almost 50 sessions, covering a wide range of subfields of cultural studies today. The plenary sessions focused on three main directions of border-crossing in late modern culture and cultural research. (1) Geographical relations between countries, particularly within Europe. (2) Historical interfaces between past and present, in processes of culturalisation whereby cultural aspect appear to become increasingly important and the past is put to use. (3) Interdisciplinary links between areas of research.

  • Follow-up of local energy and climate strategies : A study of six small Swedish municipalities
  • 2011
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Local authorities are important actors in the transition of energy systems towards renewable energy resources and efficient energy use. One mean to manage and develop local energy systems is using energy and climate strategies. Sweden has a long history of energy-planning, which effectiveness has been debated. However, in the light of climate change, many Swedish local authorities have adopted energy and/or climate strategies in recent years. These strategies are intended to clarify, prioritize and suggest measures for achieving energy and climate related goals. To be able to assess the strategies’ effectiveness it is important to identify progress and goal achievement. There is little knowledge whether and how local authorities do this kind of follow-up.The aim of this paper is to explore approaches to energy strategy follow-up in six small and medium-sized local authorities in Sweden. Based on interviews with representatives from six Swedish municipalities, this paper discusses prerequisites for energy and climate strategy follow-up. Challenges for the follow-up, such as methodological descriptions, organization and lack of high quality data are identified and discussed. A conceptual model for a systematic approach to follow-up is presented. Conclusions on how a systematic approach to follow-up could facilitate organizational learning and a more strategic approach to energy issues are drawn. It is also discussed how a developed practice could be beneficial in terms of common methodologies and possibilities to request better statistical data from the national level.

  • Kultur~Natur : Konferens för kulturstudier i Sverige, Norrköping, 15-17 juni 2009
  • 2009

  • Writing the nation. On Ulf Lundell's "Öppna landskap"
  • 2007
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • As Benedict Anderson has made clear, the media are superior creators and perpetuators of nations as imagined communities. Ulf Lundell’s ”Öppna landskap” (”Open landscapes”, 1982) is a song that was immediately appropriated as kind of new national anthem, no matter which were the artist’s intentions. In line with this, my interest in the song focuses on the way it represents an update of Swedishness. I will depart from that key feature of Romanticism which literary critic Horace Engdahl has named ”the living gaze” and follow its vicissitudes through the Swedish visa and rock in Swedish into the contemporary ”experience society”. Finally I will draw on post-colonial and eco criticism to discuss the presuppositions of Lundell’s move.

    • The coupling between a body (in an extended sense that encompasses both neural and non-neural dynamics) and its environment is here conceived as a critical substrate for cognition. We propose and discuss the plan for a neurocomputational cognitive architecture for robotic agents, so far implemented in its minimal form for supporting the behavior of a simple simulated robotic agent. A non-neural internal bodily mechanism (crucially characterized by a time scale much slower than the normal sensory-motor interactions of the robot with its environment) extends the cognitive potential of a system composed of purely reactive parts with a dynamic action selection mechanism and the capacity to integrate information over time. The same non-neural mechanism is the foundation for a novel, minimalist anticipatory architecture, implementing our bodily-anticipation hypothesis and capable of swift readaptation to related yet novel tasks.1

  • Kulturens inflytande och utflytande : Aspektpolitik i staden
  • 2009

  • 2010
  • Proceedings (redaktörskap) (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of the conference was to develop the study of Comparative Literature through Nordic collaboration both in its own discipline and in Modern Language and Cultural studies. Several of these questions have surfaced duringearlier media system changes, in particular during Romanticism and Modernism, which provided the conference with an historical frame. The conference Codex and Code also addressed questions of authenticity and originality, identity and gender, literary genres and reading practices, media and materiality, culture and popular culture, language and history, world literature, work aesthetics, translations, and canon formation.

  • The role and design of the service environment in creating favourable customer experiences
  • 2008
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The important role of the environment in service experiences is well established and accounted for in the marketing literature. Several theoretical frameworks and concepts have been suggested such as the servicescape. So far, the empirical studies have mainly focused on the effects of single variables, like music, scent or signage. Consequently, further empirical and conceptual research is needed with a holistic view. This paper contributes to this knowledge gap by building on a recent conceptualization of the experience room model. The aim of the study is to further explore design dimensions of an experience room. We examine the role of the experience room dimensions in the processes that result in the cocreation of value-in-use, while investigating their relative importance.

  • Proceedings from The 49th Societas Ethica Annual Conference 2012, Theme: Ethics and Migration, August 23–26, 2012, Lucian Blaga University Sibiu, Romania
  • 2012
  • Proceedings (redaktörskap) (refereegranskat)abstract
    • August 23-26 2012 Societas Ethica, the European Society for Research in Ethics held its 49th annual conference. The conference theme was “Ethics and Migration” and the setting the Romanian city Sibiu in Transylvania. The site for the conference mirrored the theme. Transylvania has during the centuries been a place for waves of migration, for example, already in the 12th Century it received many German immigrants. It is also today a home for hundreds of thousands of Roma people.Migration is so far a neglected issue within applied ethics. This is surprising due to both the seriousness of the issue and the ethical dilemmas it poses. With this conference the Societas Ethica, wished to bolster the ethical discussion on migration. The conference channels illustrated the range of ethical issues that migration raises:Many people migrate from poverty and oppression but are stopped at the borders of the rich nations in Europe and America; what are their obligations towards the migrants? How is migration related to global justice?Migrants and refugees are vulnerable. They have lost their communities and citizenships. What are the rights of migrants and refugees? Who is obliged to protect their rights?Fortress Europe has unfortunately become a reality. With surveillance, fences and barbwire Europe tries to keep the migrants at a distance. But, what are the moral obligations of the individual European nations and of the European Union? What do we owe them?Immigrants who have successfully entered Europe are often met with hostility and end up in segregated communities. What are the ethical challenges of segregation and conflicts based on religion and ethnicity? The unknown person, the different, the Other, is often despised and persecuted. European history shows ample of evidence of this fact. How should minorities, like for example the Roma people, be respected and included by the majority populations and by the states? The first key note speech was held by Dr Gernot Haupt, Alpen-Adria University Klagenfurt over the theme “Antigypsism and migration”. Haupt showed with plenty of examples how the Roma people in Europe have been victims of constant policies of exclusion; from repression to extermination culminating in the Holocaust in the 1930s and 1940s. Haupt expressed critique of the present attitude of the majority in societies with Roma minorities. Their message is; it is always they, the Roma, who must change, not we!Dr Matthew Gibney from Oxford University addressed the topic “Refugees and justice between states”. He noticed that presently the majority of the world’s refugees go to neighboring poor countries and hence that the refugee situation exacerbate the global inequalities. How can this change? Are not for example nations responsible for creating massive streams of refugees, like the United States after the attack on Iraq in 2003, obliged to host the resulting refugees?Dr Michelle Becka from University of Frankfurt am Main talked about “Ethics on the border. Towards a theological horizon in the discourse of migration”. She emphasized that being a stranger is an important theme in the biblical tradition; migrants are in focus for theological ethics. When the humanity of migrants is reduced due to oppression and segregation it is crucial for theological ethics to emphasize the need for solidarity. In the last keynote speech Dr Oliver Bakewell from Oxford University talked over the theme “The relationships between migration and human development”. His lecture focused on the potential positive effects of migration for development through Diasporas communities with links to their homelands, remittances, i.e. the financial support that immigrants send back to their home countries, etc.More than 40 participants, among them many young scholars from all over Europe but also from India, the United States, Hong Kong and Australia, presented high quality paper. As the only European society open for scholars in moral philosophy, theological ethics and applied ethics, Societas Ethica has a great potential to influence and stimulate the ethical discussions in Europe.

  • Proceedings (redaktörskap) (refereegranskat)abstract
    • SICFP2017This is the proceedings of the 15th Scandinavian International Conference on Fluid Power held at Linköping University in Sweden on 7-9 June 2017. The theme of the conference was “Fluid Power in the Digital Age”. The contributions are well aligned with this theme, and are indeed reflecting the great developments. We are very grateful to the effort put in by the authors to produce such high quality papers, and also to those taking time to review papers to further enhance the quality. The contributions clearly shows that the fluid power industry, and academia, have both challenges as well as opportunities in keeping up with the evolving capabilities provided by the digitalization. It was with great joy to see old and new colleagues and friends attending our conference and the division of Fluid and mechatronic systems, at Linköping University. The conference is a bi-annual event, with alternating localization between Linköping in Sweden and Tampere in Finland. The process of hosting such an event is a great effort for our organization and I would like to thank all those involved in organizing this conference, and wish good luck with the next one to our Finnish colleagues. Thank you!Prof. Petter KrusHead of DivisionFluid and Mechatronic SystemsReview ProcessEach author attending the conference days had the opportunity to select from three different ways of presenting their contribution. Firstly, a reviewed process with at least two international reviewers of each contribution. The process resulted in most cases with feedback from the reviewers with comments spanning everything between diagram legends to scientific methods. Some proposed papers where rejected upon recommendations from reviewers. Secondly contributions where also presented in industry sessions where the review process where internal only by the staff of the division. A third extended abstract presentation format where also presented during the conference. This proceedings contain all presented contributions from the reviewed papers in the first section and thereafter the non-reviewed papers in second section. All reviewed papers are marked in the footer by the acceptance date.

  • Proceedings of SIGRAD 2017, August 17-18, 2017 Norrköping, Sweden
  • 2017
  • Proceedings (redaktörskap) (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The annual meeting 2017 of the Swedish Computer Graphics Association (SIGRAD) took place at Linköping University, Campus Norrköping in Norrköping, Sweden in August 2017. SIGRAD is an event where researchers and industry professionals meet to discuss novel visions and developments in the field of computer graphics and related areas, such as visualization and human-computer interaction (HCI). Since SIGRAD was started in 1976, it has developed into the major annual appointment for the Nordic community of graphics and visual computing experts with a broad range of backgrounds. It thereby addresses the increasing need for visual computing solutions in both commercial and academic areas. SIGRAD 2017 offered a strong scientific program consisting of international keynote speakers from research and industry, presentations of recent scientific achievements in the field within Sweden, and novel technological results from international contributors. The topics covered present a nice cross-section across the diverse research efforts in the domains.Five original papers have been accepted for presentation after being peer-reviewed by an International Program Committee consisting of 22 highly qualified scientists. Each paper was reviewed, on average, by three reviewers from the committee. The accepted papers range from general computer graphics practices to practical applications and services that may benefit from the use of visualizations and computer graphics technologies. The extended participation of students at all levels of academia in research has been encouraged this year and 2 papers were selected which are first-authored by students studying at Master's Degree level. This year, we continued the “Swedish Research Overview Session” introduced at last year’s conference. In this session, Swedish research groups are given the opportunity to present their academically outstanding, previously published work at the annual conference. • Proceedings of the 11th International Modelica Conference, Versailles, France, September 21-23, 2015
  • 2015
  • Proceedings (redaktörskap) (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Welcome The 11th International Modelica Conference, which takes place at Palais des Congrès de Versailles, is the main event for the Modelica community. Users, library developers, tool vendors, and language designers gather to share their knowledge and learn about the latest scientific and industrial progress related to Modelica and FMI (Functional Mockup Interface). The fundamental idea behind Modelica is to allow storing modeling knowhow in a high-level formally defined format, i.e., to collect information which you otherwise would find in engineering books only accessible by humans. By allowing convenient reuse of this knowhow by definition of component model libraries, enormous saving in man-hours for setting up simulation studies is achieved. Furthermore, by proper validation of such model libraries, much more reliable conclusions can be made from simulation studies leading to better products and user experience. These considerations lead to the equation-based object-oriented formalism of Modelica. Since the start of the collaborative design work for Modelica in 1996, Modelica has matured from an idea among a small number of dedicated enthusiasts to a widely accepted standard language for the modeling and simulation of cyber-physical systems. In addition, the standardization of the language by the non-profit organization Modelica Association enables Modelica models to be portable between a growing number of tools. Modelica is now used in many industries including automotive, energy and process, aerospace, and industrial equipment. Modelica is the language of choice for model-based systems engineering. The FMI standard has been added to the project portfolio of the Modelica Association. FMI provides a complementary standard that enables deployment of pre-compiled high quality models originating from different model formats to a larger number of engineers working with system design and verification.

  • Proceedings of the 2nd CIRP IPS2 Conference 2010, Linköping, 14-15 April
  • 2010
  • Proceedings (redaktörskap) (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Manufacturers in developed countries today regard services as increasingly important. Some manufacturing firms are strategically shifting from a “product seller” towards a “service provider”. As a result, their offerings have come to form a combination of physical products and services. Along with this trend, concepts such as Industrial Product-Service Systems (IPS²) are found in not only theoretical but also practical fields in industries. An IPS² is defined as “an integrated industrial product and service offering that delivers value in use”.This integrated offering and its way of development provides opportunities for companies and their customers to design more innovative solutions. IPS² has potential for better environmental performance, as well. On the other hand, this has a great impact on such companies. Delivering IPS² is not an easy task, and may force companies to change organizational structures and their mindsets. The CIRP IPS² Conference is organized by the CIRP IPS² Working Group. This 2nd CIRP IPS² Conference has 69 technical papers in the proceedings from 14 countries. This shows the interests of the topic within CIRP and the outside research community at large. The conference has 12 technical sessions, 2 keynote speeches and 2 industry study visits. Over 100 participants are expected to attend the conference. This IPS² conference will focus on research and practice into marketing, design, development, manufacturing, delivery, use, maintenance, and end-of-life of IPS². The topics to be addressed include manufacturing methods, development methods, service quality, information communication technologies, service networks, business models, and environmental performance.Reflecting the high degree of participants’ sharing backgrounds and disciplines, we will make a challenge on the way of organizing sessions in this conference. Unlike the tradition of CIRP conferences, presentations will be short with 10 minutes while long discussion across different presentations will be facilitated by session chairpersons with some 30 minutes after all the presentations in each session. We understand this has pros and cons, but in this particular case we believe this is, at least, a good attempt and hope this to produce more fruitful results. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all the authors for their high-quality research papers, skilled session chairpersons, companies offering industry visits, the international scientific committee members for their support in reviewing the papers and the local organising committee for their efforts in preparing this conference. We would also like to thank our sponsors; VINNOVA (The Swedish Governmental Agency for Innovation Systems), our gold sponsor Linköping municipality and our silver sponsors Servicestaden AB, Polyplank AB, SIG PM, Blekinge Institute of Technology, Department of Management and Engineering at Linköping University and The Faste Laboratory at Luleå University of Technology for their support for the conference.Conference chairpersons,Tomohiko Sakao (Linköping University)Tobias Larsson (Luleå University of Technology)

  • Proceedings of the 56th Conference on Simulation and Modelling (SIMS 56) : October, 7-9, 2015, Linköping University, Sweden
  • 2015
  • Proceedings (redaktörskap) (refereegranskat)abstract
    • WelcomeThe 56th Conference on Simulation and Modelling will be held in Linköping, Sweden. Linköping is one of Sweden’s fastest growing cities. The population is constantly increasing and will soon surpass 150 000 inhabitants. It is currently Sweden’s fifth largest city and a part of the expansive region Twin Cities of Sweden. Linköping has long been characterized by world-class high technology in the fields of aviation, IT and the environment. There is a strong force of innovation especially in Mjärdevi Science Park—one of Europe’s leading technology parks, and at the highly ranked university, which stands for excellence and entrepreneurship.SIMS is the Scandinavian Simulation Society with members from the five Nordic countries Denmark, Finland, Norway, Sweden and Iceland. The SIMS history goes back to 1959. The goal of SIMS is to further the science and practice of modeling and simulation in all application areas and be a Scandinavian forum for information interchange among modeling and simulation professionals and non-professionals in Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden as well as a channel for information exchange between the Scandinavian modeling and simulation community and the international modeling and simulation communities. The ambition of the SIMS is to bring the field of modeling and simulation technology to a variety of application fields from energy extraction to building and automotive industries, resulting in more sustainable and ecological systems and reducing energy consumption and waste production. The scientific program includes technical sessions with submitted and invited papers and will cover broad aspects of simulation, modeling and optimization. The focus of the conference is split evenly between papers on simulation and optimization in a variety of applied contexts spanning domains such as oil extraction, automotive and building industries and more methodological papers on tools and technologies for simulation and modeling. This year we wanted to emphasize the importance of reducing the gap between state of the art methodologies and tools and industrial applications. To this end a number of invited talks, papers and tutorials were centered on tools and methodologies for successful modeling in an industrial context. The format of the conference is somewhat changed compared to previous years. This year we have dedicated a half-day before the traditional two-day conference to tutorials, with 3 tutorials presenting stateof- the-art simulation tools.Conference highlights:4 Keynote speeches40 papers in 2 parallel tracks3 tutorialsElectronic proceedings including all papers and some associated Modelica libraries and modelsFinally, we want to acknowledge the support we received from the conference board and program committee as well as from the SIMS board. Special thanks to our colleagues at this year’s organizers at Linköping University, especially to Åsa Kärrman, and Tina Malmström from Grand Travel Group. The support from the conference sponsors is gratefully acknowledged. Last but not least, thanks to all authors, keynote speakers, and presenters for their contributions to this conference. We wish all participants an enjoyable and inspiring conference.Linköping, September 1, 2015Lena Buffoni, Adrian Pop and Bernhard Thiele

  • Bootstrapping a Modelica Compiler aiming at Modelica 4
  • 2011
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • What does it mean to bootstrap a compiler, and why do it? This paper reports on the first bootstrapping (i.e., a compiler can compile itself) of a full-scale EOO (Equation-based Object-Oriented) modeling language such as Modelica. The Modelica language has been modeled/implemented in the OpenModelica compiler (OMC) using an extended version of Modelica called MetaModelica. OMC models the MetaModelica language and is now compiling itself with good performance. Benefits include a more extensible maintainable compiler, also making it easier to add functionality such as debugging support. This work is in line with the recently started Modelica 4 design effort which includes moving implementation of language features from the compiler to a Modelica Core library, allowing compilers to become smaller while increasing correctness and portability. A number of language constructs discussed for Modelica 4 are already supported in some form by the bootstrapped compiler. Future work includes adapting language constructs according to the Modelica 4 design effort and extracting and restructuring parts of the Modelica implementation from the OMC compiler to instead reside in a Modelica Core library, making the compiler smaller and more extensible.
