  • Effects on physical performance and pain from three dynamic training programs for women with work-related trapezius myalgia
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Journal of Rehabilitation Medicine. - : Taylor & Francis. - 1650-1977 .- 1651-2081 .- 0000-0000. ; 33:4, s. 162-9
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • To compare training programs for women with trapezius myalgia regarding physical performance and pain, 102 women were randomized to strength, endurance, co-ordination and non-training groups. Before and after the intervention, static strength and dynamic muscular endurance in shoulder muscles were measured on a Cybex II dynamometer. Muscle activity in shoulder muscles was monitored via surface EMG. The signal amplitude ratio between the active and passive phase of repeated contractions indicated the ability to relax. Pain at present, pain in general and pain at worst were measured on visual analogue scales. After training, within group comparisons showed that the training groups rated less pain, and in the strength training group ratings of pain at worst differed from the non-training group. Using the non-training group as a reference, static strength increased in the strength and endurance training groups and muscular endurance in all training groups. The study indicates that regular exercises with strength, endurance or co-ordination training of neck/shoulder muscles might alleviate pain for women with work-related trapezius myalgia.

  • Analysis of the state and size of silver on alumina in effective removal of NOx from oxygen rich exhaust gas
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Journal of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology. - : American Scientific Publishers. - 1533-4880 .- 0000-0000. ; 6:4, s. 1076-1083
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Ag/alumina catalysts with different silver contents for octane-SCR were prepared by impregnation and incipient wetness methods. Activity tests revealed that the decisive factor for high activity is not only a high dispersion of silver, but also the ability of the system to redisperse clustered silver. Determination of dispersion by TEM/HAADF and O-2-chemisorption experiments resulted in values close to each other even if the results were not directly comparable. This is suggested to be due to not complete silver reduction below 700 degrees C and the samples being very heterogeneous in terms of particle size, e.g., having a bimodal size distribution. Small charged Ag-n(delta+) clusters containing 2-8 silver atoms highly prevailed in the samples containing < 2 wt% Ag and exhibiting high octane-SCR activity In highly loaded Ag/alumina samples or those reduced and reoxidized at high temperature (> 400 degrees C), large metallic particles are stabilized, resulting in poor conversion of NOx to N-2.

  • Self-healing and self-organized gold nanoparticle films at a water/organic solvent interface
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Journal of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology. - : American Scientific Publishers. - 1533-4880 .- 0000-0000. ; 6:1, s. 130-134
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Gold nanoparticles (5 nm and 20 nm) have been synthesized and stabilized with mercaptoundecanol. These particles, although insoluble in water or common organic solvents, spread as a thin film at the liquid-liquid interface between a water phase and an organic phase. Films of these gold nanoparticles have been observed both by conventional transmission electron microscopy of deposited samples and by cryo-transmission electron microscopy of plunge-frozen samples. The film can be monolayered and extend over centimeter-sized areas. The particle films spontaneously re-assemble and self-organize at the interface when disrupted. This self-healing capacity of the film should make it possible to build a device for continuous production and deposition of the film.

  • A Midwifery Model of Care for Childbearing women at High Risk: Genuine Caring in Caring for the Genuine
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Journal of Perinatal Education. - : Lamaze International. - 1058-1243 .- 0000-0000. ; 14:1, s. 9-21
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • According to this paper's synthesis of research, three constituents of ideal midwifery care emerge. First, a dignity-protective action takes place in a midwife's caring relationship with a childbearing woman at high risk and includes mutuality, trust, ongoing dialogue, enduring presence, and shared responsibility. Secondly, the midwife's embodied knowledge is based on genuineness to oneself and consists of theoretical, practical, intuitive, and reflective knowledge. Finally, nurse-midwives have a special responsibility to balance the natural and medical perspectives in the care of childbearing women at high risk, especially by promoting the woman's inborn capacity to be a mother and to give birth in a natural manner. This midwifery model of care is labeled "Genuine Caring in Caring for the Genuine." Here, the word genuine expresses the nature of midwifery care, as well as the nature of each pregnant woman being cared for as a unique individual.

  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The past few years we have witnessed a tremendous surge of interest in so-called array-based miniaturised analytical systems due to their value as extremely powerful tools for high-throughput sequence analysis, drug discovery and development, and diagnostic tests in medicine (see articles in Issue 1). Terminologies that have been used to describe these array-based bioscience systems include (but are not limited to): DNA-chip, microarrays, microchip, biochip, DNA-microarrays and genome chip. Potential technological benefits of introducing these miniaturised analytical systems include improved accuracy, multiplexing, lower sample and reagent consumption, disposability, and decreased analysis times, just to mention a few examples. Among the many alternative principles of detection-analysis (e.g. chemiluminescence, electroluminescence and conductivity), fluo re scence-based techniques are widely used, examples being fluorescence resonance energy transfer, fluorescence quenching, fluorescence polarisation, time-resolved fluorescence, and fluorescence fluctuation spectroscopy (see articles in Issue II). Time-dependent fluctuations of fluorescent biomolecules with different molecular properties, like molecular weight, translational and rotational diffusion time, colour and lifetime, potentially provide all the kinetic and thermodynamic information required in analysing complex interactions. In this mini-review article, we present recent extensions aimed to implement parallel laser excitation and parallel fluorescence detection that can lead to even further increase in throughput in miniaturised array-based analytical systems. We also report on developments and characterisations of multiplexing extension that allow multifocal laser excitation together with matched parallel fluorescence detection for parallel confocal dynamical fluorescence fluctuation studies at the single biomolecule level.

  • JOSS: Joint Exploration of CPU-Memory DVFS and Task Scheduling for Energy Efficiency
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: 52nd International Conference on Parallel Processing (ICPP 2023). - 0000-0000. - 9798400708435 ; , s. 828-838
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Energy-efficient execution of task-based parallel applications is crucial as tasking is a widely supported feature in many parallel programming libraries and runtimes. Currently, state-of-the-art proposals primarily rely on leveraging core asymmetry and CPU DVFS. Additionally, these proposals mostly use heuristics and lack the ability to explore the trade-offs between energy usage and performance. However, our findings demonstrate that focusing solely on CPU energy consumption for energy-efficient scheduling while neglecting memory energy consumption leaves room for further energy savings. We propose JOSS, a runtime scheduling framework that leverages both CPU DVFS and memory DVFS in conjunction with core asymmetry and task characteristics to enable energy-efficient execution of task-based applications. JOSS also enables the exploration of energy and performance trade-offs by supporting user-defined performance constraints. JOSS uses a set of models to predict task execution time, CPU and memory power consumption, and then selects the configuration for the tunable knobs to achieve the desired energy performance trade-off. Our evaluation shows that JOSS achieves 21.2% energy reduction, on average, compared to the state-of-the-art. Moreover, we demonstrate that even in the absence of a memory DVFS knob, taking energy consumption of both CPU and memory into account achieves better energy savings compared to only accounting for CPU energy. Furthermore, JOSS is able to adapt scheduling to reduce energy consumption while satisfying the desired performance constraints.

  • Fabrication and luminescence of ZnS : Mn2+ nanoflowers
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Journal of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology. - : American Scientific Publishers. - 1533-4880 .- 0000-0000. ; 5:9, s. 1309-1322
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Visually striking nanoflowers composed of ZnS:Mn2+ nanoparticles are prepared and characterized. The configurations of these fractal structures are very sensitive to both the pH values of the particle solutions from which they are precipitated and the substrates on which they are deposited. At pH 2.2, the fractal structures resemble trees without leaves; at pH 7.7, they are tree-like with four arms and at pH 11.0 they resemble trees with six arms. High resolution transmission microscopy reveals that the nanoflowers are composed of ZnS:Mn2+ nanoparticles of 2-5 nm in size. X-ray photoelectron spectral data indicate that the sample compositions of nitrogen, chlorine, and sulfur vary gradually with pH values of the solutions. These changes may have an impact on both the fractal configuration and the luminescence properties. The emission spectra of the particle solutions at pH values of 2.2 and 11.0 are similar with the emission maximum at 475 nm. As the pH value approaches 7.7, the emission spectral maximum shifts to longer wavelengths. At a pH value of 7.7, the emission peak wavelength is the reddest, 520 nm. The emission peak of the nanoflowers at a pH value of 9.3 is 510 nm, while the emission spectrum of the nanoflowers at 5.2 has two peaks at 500 nm and 440 nm, respectively. These blue-green emissions are attributed to defects and are the dominant luminescence from the nanoflowers. The emission from Mn2+ dopant is only observed in the delayed spectra of the fractal solid samples.

  • Ingår i: Clinical Nursing Research. - : SAGE Publications. - 1054-7738 .- 0000-0000. ; 10:4, s. 369-386
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study observed the public health nurse's and the patient's activity level during blood pressure measurement and the kind of nonpharmacological treatment that was given. Using the Nurse Practitioner Rating Form, three structured observations were made of 21 public health nurses at their offices at health care centers. The nurses were randomly selected from 22 health care centers in Southern Sweden. The public health nurses used nonpharmacological treatment at 18 out of 63 visits, mainly diet and physical activity. The nonpharmacological conversation had a psychosocial aspect at 15 observations. During the visits, most of the facts and advice concerned somatic aspects of health promotion. Almost all patients were asked about their medication. At more than half of the observations, the nurses and the patients met at the same medium or high communication level. The nurses need training and information about nonpharmacological treatment to practice health promotion in hypertension care.

  • Microstructural modeling approach applied to rock material
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Journal of materials engineering and performance (Print). - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1059-9495 .- 1544-1024 .- 0000-0000. ; 14:1, s. 104-111
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The importance of the microstructural parameters in rock mechanical behavior has been investigated by several authors. Moreover, the Weibull statistical model has been used to characterize the heterogeneity of several materials on the basis of the concept that the microscopic defects within the material determine their mechanical strength. The modeling of different rocks is a topic that is fundamental for the prediction of rock fragmentation. In this article, the analysis of rock microstructure is performed using the microstructural modeling approach, which consists of the simplification, quantification, and modeling of the main properties of rock microstructure. The grain size, grain shape, and microcracks are modeled by means of statistical density functions, namely, Cauchy, chi-squared, exponential, extreme value, gamma, Laplace, normal, uniform, and Weibull. It is found that the Weibull distribution is the most appropriate statistical model of the grain size and grain shape, when compared with the other eight statistical models. Regarding microcracks, the results show that the gamma distribution is the most appropriate model. The Weibull and gamma distributions are then used to analyze the heterogeneity of the microstructure. This is done by comparison of the statistical models of each microstructural property evaluated in several thin sections of the same rock. It is found that with respect to grain size and grain shape, the rock is homogeneous, while the size distribution of the microcracks shows a clear trend toward less homogeneity. The microstructural modeling approach is important for modeling, characterizing, and analyzing the microstructure of rock material. Among other applications, it can be used to explain differences in the mechanical behavior obtained in testing several specimens.

  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Journal of Thermal Spray Technology. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1544-1016 .- 0000-0000 .- 1059-9630. ; 12:1, s. 44-52
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A general method to map and control thermal spray processes, ensuring predefined levels of selected final coating properties, is presented. The method relies on monitoring and individually controlling particle velocity and particle temperature through selected spray gun parameters. Mapping of the process results in process maps describing the individual effect of particle velocity and particle temperature on each selected coating property of concern; in this case, different features of the microstructure and deposition efficiency. From the information provided by the process maps, a process window is constructed. This process window provides the limits within which particle velocity and particle temperature are allowed to vary to fulfill a predefined coating specification. To verify the method, two predefined thermal barrier top coatings one porous and one dense-were produced by air plasma spray with satisfactory results.

    • We study electron wave packet propagation and scattering in ZnO nanorods. By solving the time-dependent three-dimensional Schrodinger equation, we were able to describe propagation and dynamics of the scattering process of the wave packet by ionized impurities. Scattering behavior of the wave packet by an attractive/repulsive scattering center is clearly demonstrated.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Since 1992-93 vaccination against Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) has been included in the general Swedish childhood vaccination programme. The aim of the present study is to describe the epidemiology, identify and describe vaccine failures and calculate vaccine effectiveness during the first 6 y after introduction of vaccination against Hib. Laboratory reports of blood and cerebrospinal isolates to the Swedish Institute for Infectious Disease Control were used as the source for identifying the patients. Additional information was subsequently obtained from physicians and parents of children who had developed the disease during the study period. Vaccine failures were identified and vaccine effectiveness calculated. During the study period, 152 cases of invasive H. influenzae were identified in the age group 0-14 y. During the 6-y period, 6 true vaccine failures, 6 apparent vaccine failures and 1 possible vaccine failure were found in nearly two million vaccinated child-years. The effectiveness of the Hib vaccination in the birth cohort of children 1993 to 1997 in Sweden was calculated to be 96.1% (95% confidence interval 94.2-97.5). The study supports earlier studies from several countries that conjugated Hib vaccination introduced in general childhood vaccination programs is effective and substantially decreases suffering from invasive Hib diseases.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Electrical stimulation was applied to bull carcasses at a low voltage (80 V, 15 Hz, 30 s). The pH decline, tenderness, myofibrillar protein degradation, and exoprotease activities were studied in semimembranosus and longissimus dorsi muscles during the ageing process. Electrical stimulation was found to be beneficial for tenderness in longissimus dorsi muscle as determined by shear force and confirmed by the earlier appearance of the 30-kDa band in the electrically stimulated muscles. The acceleration of the glycolytic process after electrical stimulation affected exoprotease activities, in turn induced the activation of dipeptidyl peptidases I and II and the inhibition of methionyl, leucyl and pyroglutamyl aminopeptidases; however electrical stimulation did not influence alanyl aminopeptidase and arginyl aminopeptidase.

  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Proceedings - Workshop on Software Engineering for Responsible AI, SE4RAI 2022. - New York, NY, USA : ACM. ; , s. 29-36
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Systems that rely on Machine Learning (ML systems) have differing demands on quality - non-functional requirements (NFRs) - compared to traditional systems. NFRs for ML systems may differ in their definition, scope, and importance. Despite the importance of NFRs for ML systems, our understanding of their definitions and scope - and of the extent of existing research - is lacking compared to our understanding in traditional domains.Building on an investigation into importance and treatment of ML system NFRs in industry, we make three contributions towards narrowing this gap: (1) we present clusters of ML system NFRs based on shared characteristics, (2) we use Scopus search results - as well as inter-coder reliability on a sample of NFRs - to estimate the number of relevant studies on a subset of the NFRs, and (3), we use our initial reading of titles and abstracts in each sample to define the scope of NFRs over parts of the system (e.g., training data, ML model). These initial findings form the groundwork for future research in this emerging domain.CCS CONCEPTS • Software and its engineering → Extra-functional properties; Requirements analysis; • Computing methodologies → Machine learning.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Gastrointestinal side effects carry a significant cost related to the use of NSAID medications. Methods: The economic burden of NSAID-induced gastric side effects is estimated using the cost-of-illness methodology. Costs are calculated using both a prevalence (top-down) approach and an incidence (bottom-up) approach. Results: Using the top-down approach, the total cost in 1998 of NSAID-induced ulcers was MSEK 329-586, direct costs accounting for 76%-83%. The bottom-up approach gives an estimate of MSEK 320, of which MSEK 290 was direct cost. About one-quarter of total costs for ulcer disease can be attributed to the use of NSAIDs. Conclusions: Gastrointestinal side effects carry a significant cost from the use of NSAIDs, costs that are as important as the price of NSAIDs. This should be considered when choice of drug and prophylaxis is being made.

    • The Ni-Ru system is assessed using the CALPHAD technique. The only available experimental information for this system concerns phase equilibria, whereas no thermochemical information has been found. The THERMO-CALC software is applied to obtain Gibbs energy (G) functions for the individual phases. The phase diagram calculated from the new G functions is in excellent agreement with the experimental diagram, and all the thermodynamic parameters are given in the Appendix. In addition, tentative activity diagrams and the metastable miscibility gaps in fcc and hcp phases are calculated from the new thermodynamic description.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • OBJECTIVE: To assess the prevalence of respiratory symptoms, asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and to relate it to an estimated detection rate in primary health care.DESIGN: A two-staged study with a cross-sectional survey and a clinical validation.SETTING: The adult population of Värmland, a county in Sweden.SUBJECTS: 4814 persons completed the survey and 206 the confirmative validation study.MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Prevalence of respiratory symptoms, of asthma and COPD.RESULTS: More than 40% reported respiratory symptoms. Wheeze was reported by 8.0%, shortness of breath by 11.4% and sputum production by 14.1%. Smoking was more common among women than among men. The prevalence of asthma was 8.2% and COPD 2.1%. Of persons with asthma, 33% were estimated to be undiagnosed, 67% used medication and nearly 60% attended primary health care services.CONCLUSION: Respiratory symptoms as well as asthma were common in this study and equivalent to earlier findings. The difference between the epidemiologically estimated prevalence of asthma and the lower detection rate in primary health care can be explained by at least three factors: persons who did not seek any care, were underdiagnosed or attended other health care providers.

  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 2023 BEHAVE Conference. - 0000-0000 .- 0000-0000. ; , s. 444-455
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Demand-side management (DSM) programs aiming to both reduce and render household consumption more flexible, are becoming increasingly essential due to energy crises and the growing integration of renewable energy into energy production. The involvement of households and energy users is crucial to fully unlock the potential of DSM programs. As this paper demonstrates, despite more than thirty years of feminist scholarly work focusing on the home as an important site of the production of gender inequality, few of these insights have been taken into account by DSM-designers. Additionally, we note a broader pattern concerning gaps in knowledge regarding the diverse perspectives of energy users and their domestic contexts, all of which create obstacles to successful rollout and scalability. This paper uses the concept of the social license to automate and insight from feminist research to analyse the literature on DSM programs. We find three primary barriers in household DSM programs: 1) there is an unresolved tension between DSM technology being perceived as a masculine domain and the home as a feminine domain, 2) low-income households face challenges in accessing the technology needed to enable both flexibility and savings, and 3) disparities in opportunities for participation among elderly and young individuals in DSM programs and their complex reasons are insufficiently considered. Based on these findings we argue that user diversity needs to form a starting point in DSM program design for fair and scalable solutions.

  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Russian journal of coordination chemistry. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1070-3284 .- 1608-3318. ; 34:1, s. 59-69
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The structures and spectroscopic properties of mononuclear and binuclear mercury(II) and copper(II) complexes with four dithiocarbamate ligands R 2NC(S)S- (R = CH3, C2H5, or iso-C3H7; R2 = (CH2)6) were studied by solid-state 13C and 15N CP/MAS NMR and EPR spectroscopy. Mercury(II) N,N-cyclohexamethylenedithiocarbamate [Hg 2{S2CN(CH2)6}4] was obtained and characterized in detail by X-ray diffraction analysis at 299 K. The binuclear molecule of the complex is centrosymmetric; the central tricyclic fragment [Hg2S4C2] is in the chair conformation. In the 13C and 15N NMR spectra, the signals were assigned to the dithiocarbamate ligands with different structural functions: bidentate chelating and combined (both chelating and bridging) ones. The differences between the isotropic 15N chemical shifts for the dialkyldithiocarbamate ligands were interpreted in terms of combination of the mesomeric effect of the =NC(S)S-groups and the inductive effect of the alkyl substituents. According to the EPR data, copper(II) in magnetically diluted systems is mainly found in heterobinuclear molecules [CuHg(S2CNR 2)4] and the geometry of the chromophores [CuS 5] approximates to a tetragonal pyramid.

    • In 1994, the questionnaire 'Quality of Care from the Patient's Perspective' (QPP) was developed using a conventional factor analytical approach (Wilde et al. 1994). The items and conceptual framework of this questionnaire were derived from a theoretical model, which, in turn, was developed from qualitative patient interviews, using a grounded theory method of analysis (Wilde et al. 1993). The aims of this study were to develop further the dimensionality of the QPP using structural equation modelling combined with advances in factor analysis modelling, and to refine the instrument. This comparatively new methodology extracts more information out of questionnaire data and is considered to be superior to traditional scaling methods. The sample consisted of 611 somatic inpatients from four departments at a Swedish hospital. Data collected with the QPP were explored with the new tool tracing the dimensions postulated in the theoretical model underlying the QPP. A nested factor model was developed fulfilling statistical criteria for adjustment between model and data. The model consists of a general factor and 16 subordinate factors. Most of the original QPP scales were reproduced with the new statistical technique. However, some content changes were made which appear to bring the QPP scales closer to patients' meaning representations of the area. Some changes were also made to the response format, changes which appear to strengthen the psychometric properties of the instrument. The refined QPP will hopefully contribute to a more differentiated picture of quality of care when applied in the field. All scales, items, and response formats of the revised QPP are presented in an appendix.
