  • The Almelund Shale, a replacement name for the Upper Didymograptus Shale and the Lower Dicellograptus Shale in the lithostratigraphical classification of the Ordovician succession in Scania, Southern Sweden
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Bulletin of the Geological Society of Denmark. - 0011-6297. ; 49, s. 41-47
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The formation name Almelund Shale is proposed for a lithostratigraphically defined unit to replace the outdated chronostratigraphical designations Upper Didymograptus Shale and Dicellograptus Shale in the Middle and lowermost Upper Ordovician succession in Scania. The Almelund Shale is a lithologically uniform unit of dark-grey to black shales with rare carbonate interbeds between the Komstad Limestone and the Sularp Shale. Apart from a diverse graptolite fauna it yields a few shelly fossils (mostly lingulate brachiopods) and biostratigraphically diagnostic conodonts and chitinozoans. In the type sections of the Almelund Shale along the Sularp Brook in the F (a) over circle gels (a) over circle ng area; W-central Scania, the top of the unit is taken to be the base of the F (a) over circle gels (a) over circle ng Phosphorite, and its basal contact is at the top of the underlying Komstad Limestone. Its total thickness in the F (a) over circle gels (a) over circle ng drill-core is 28.32 m. The unit is widely distributed in the subsurface in a SE-NW belt across Scania.

  • Stratigraphy and geothermal assessment of Mesozoic sandstone reservoirs in the Öresund Basin - exemplified by well data and seismic profiles
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Bulletin of the Geological Society of Denmark. - 0011-6297. ; 66, s. 123-149
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Øresund Basin in the transnational area between Sweden and Denmark forms a marginal part of the Danish Basin. The structural outline and stratigraphy of the Mesozoic succession is described, and a novel interpretation and description of the subsurface geology and geothermal potential in the North Sjælland Half-graben is presented. The subsurface bedrock in the basin includes several Mesozoic intervals with potential geothermal sandstone reservoirs. Parts of the succession fulfill specific geological requirements about distribution, composition and quality of the sandstones. A characterisation of these is presently of great interest in the attempt to identify geothermal reservoirs suitable for district heating purposes. The results presented in this paper include for the first time a comprehensive description of the stratigraphic intervals as well as the characteristics of the potential Mesozoic geothermal reservoirs in the Øresund region, including their distribution, composition and physical properties. This is illustrated by seismic cross-sections and well sections. In addition, results from analyses and evaluations of porosity, permeability, formation fluids and temperature are presented. Six potential geothermal reservoirs in the Mesozoic succession are described and assessed. Primary focus is placed on the characteristics of the reservoirs in the Lower Triassic and Rhaetian–Lower Jurassic succession. The study shows that the Mesozoic reservoir sandstones vary considerably with respect to porosity and permeability. Values range between 5–25% for the pre-Rhaetian Triassic sandstones, but are commonly > 25% for the Rhaetian–Lower Jurassic and Lower Cretaceous sandstones. The corresponding permeability rarely reaches above 500 mD for the pre-Rhaetian Triassic reservoirs, but often reach >1 Darcy for the Rhaetian–Lower Jurassic and the Lower Cretaceous sandstones. The interpreted formation temperatures for the reservoirs in the Øresund Basin are: 45–50°C at 1500 m, 60–70°C at 2000 m and 70–90°C at 2500 m depth . The combined results provide a geological framework for making site specific predictions regarding appraisal of viable geothermal projects for district heating purposes in the region as well as reducing the risk of unsuccessful wells

  • A new echinoderm faunule from the Lower Jurassic (Pliensbachian) of southern Sweden
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Bulletin of the Geological Society of Denmark. - : Dansk Geologisk Forening. - 0011-6297 .- 2245-7070. ; 58, s. 67-73
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In Sweden, Jurassic echinoderms are extremely rare. This present study documents an Early Jurassic echinoderm assemblage collected from a temporary exposure near Helsingborg in Skane, southern Sweden, which includes a previously undescribed species of isocrinid crinoid, Isocrinus ranae sp. nov., and an acrosaleniid echinoid. The Swedish specimens demonstrate that even limited echinoderm material from small exposures can be assigned to a high systematic level and provide data of considerable significance to the evolution of the group as a whole.

  • Dental and vertebral morphology of the enigmatic mosasaur Dollosaurus (Reptilia, Mosasauridae) from the lower Campanian (Upper Cretaceous) of southern Sweden
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Bulletin of the Geological Society of Denmark. - 0011-6297. ; 52:1, s. 17-25
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Teeth, jawbone fragments and vertebrae of an unusual mosasaurine mosasaur, Dollosaurns, have been collected from marine strata of latest early Campanian age in the Kristianstad Basin, southern Sweden. This material enables a detailed analysis of dental and vertebral characters, which, in turn, are used to tentatively distinguish Dollosaurus from the closely related globidensine Prognathodon. However, the evidence is contradictory, and two evolutionary scenarios are possible: (1) the two genera represent separate offshoots of a single lineage; or (2) Dollosaurns represents the most basal 'Prognathodon-like' taxon known so far.

  • A phosphatised fossil Lagerstätte from the middle Cambrian (Wuliuan Stage) of North Greenland (Laurentia)
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Bulletin of the Geological Society of Denmark. - : Dansk Geologisk Forening. - 0011-6297 .- 2245-7070. ; 72, s. 101-122
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The upper Henson Gletscher Formation (Cambrian, Miaolingian Series, Wuliuan Stage) of southern Lauge Koch Land and Londal, south-western Peary Land, North Greenland (Laurentia) yields diverse assemblages of phosphatised Small Shelly Fossils after treatment with weak acetic acid. The occurrence merits description as a fossil Lagerstatte on account of the exceptional preservation of soft parts in some specimens, although the phosphatisation itself is generally rather coarse. Bradoriid and phosphatocopid arthropods are common and display substantial variation in their preservational history. Some specimens retain traces of internal morphology, although details are generally obscured by indifferent preservation. Rare specimens extend the range of stem-group pentastomid arthropods back by more than 10 million years. A unique hatching larva demonstrates the same early developmental stage of a stem-group priapulan worm to that described in some present-day priapulans. The preservation of an in place operculum has demonstrated that the widespread, sup-posed mollusc Protowenella is actually an unusual, strongly coiled hyolith. Abundant coprolites and cololites provide additional evidence of early phosphatisation. In terms of morphology, Cambrocoryne lagenamorpha gen. et sp. nov. superficially resembles wiwaxiid and some annelid sclerites, thelodont scales and the foraminiferan Lagena, but its true identity is obscure.

  • Euendolith borings in Chancelloria and Nisusia from the middle Cambrian (Miaolingian) of North Greenland (Laurentia)
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Bulletin of the Geological Society of Denmark. - : Geological Society of Denmark. - 0011-6297 .- 2245-7070. ; 73, s. 57-66
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Borings of microscopic organisms (euendoliths) are described from the Henson Gletscher Formation (middle Cambrian, Miaolingian Series, Wuliuan Stage) of Peary Land, North Greenland (Laurentia). Partially phosphatised sclerites of Chancelloria and valves of the brachiopod Nisusia reveal abundant casts of borings following dissolution of skeletal calcium carbonate in weak acetic acid. Threads referred to Scolecia dominate, occurring together with coccoids (Planobola) and the branching Fascichnus, in a suite comparable to a lower Cambrian assemblage from the Maidiping Formation of Sichuan, China.

  • Middle Cambrian (Miaolingian Series, Wuliuan Stage) molluscs and mollusc-like microfossils from North Greenland (Laurentia)
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Bulletin of the Geological Society of Denmark. - : Geological Society of Denmark. - 0011-6297 .- 2245-7070. ; 70, s. 69-104
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Diverse assemblages of helcionelloid molluscs and mollusc-like microfossils are described from the upper Henson Gletscher Formation (Cambrian, Miaolingian Se-ries, Wuliuan Stage) of Lauge Koch Land and western Peary Land, North Greenland (Laurentia). The fauna compares closely to an assemblage of similar age from the Coonigan Formation of Australia, although the latter is preserved as silica replicas while the North Greenland fossils are dominantly preserved as phosphatized internal moulds. These internal moulds often retain a detailed impression of the inner surface of the shell, with a fine pitted texture typically present. Prominent deep grooves on the sub-apical surface in the erect helcionellids Dorispira and Erugoconus, correspond-ing to ridges on the shell interior, seem to be associated with control of water flow through the mantle cavity. Well-developed shell pores, preserved as tubercles on the internal mould, are common in species of the laterally compressed Mellopegma. New taxa: Dorispira avannga sp. nov., Dorispira septentrionalis sp. nov., Dorispira tavsenensis sp. nov., Dorispira tippik sp. nov., Erugoconus acuminatus gen. et sp. nov., Scenella? siku sp. nov., Sermeqiconus gen. nov., Tavseniconus erectus gen. et sp. nov., Vendrascospira troelseni gen. et sp. nov., Vendrascospira frykmani gen. et sp. nov.

  • Middle Cambrian trilobites (Miaolingian, Ehmaniella Biozone) from the Telt Bugt Formation of Daugaard-Jensen Land, western North Greenland
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Bulletin of the Geological Society of Denmark. - : GEOLOGICAL SOC DENMARK. - 0011-6297 .- 2245-7070. ; 68, s. 1-14
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A small fauna of middle Cambrian trilobites is described from the upper Telt Bugt Formation of Daugaard-Jensen Land, western North Greenland, and the formation is formally defined. Blainiopsis holtedahli and Blainiopsis benthami, originally described from the equivalent Cape Wood Formation of Bache Peninsula, Nunavut, Canada, are documented in an assemblage assigned to the Ehmaniella Biozone (Topazan Stage of North American usage), Miaolingian Series, Wulivan Stage, of the international standard. Two new species are proposed: Ehmaniella sermersuagensis and Clappaspis tupeq.

  • Ordovician gastropods from pebbles in Cretaceous fluvial sandstones in south-east Disko, West Greenland
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Bulletin of the Geological Society of Denmark. - 0011-6297 .- 2245-7070. ; 67, s. 75-81
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The gastropods Sinuopea sp. and Lecanospira cf. compacta (Salter 1859) of probable early Ordovician age are described from cherty limestone clasts within fluvial strata of the Cretaceous Atane Formation of south-east Disko, central West Greenland. The record of Sinuopea possibly suggests an earliest Ordovician (Tremadocian) age, slightly older than the Floian-Dapingian age suggested by the oldest known conodont assemblages described from West Greenland. The determinations provide supporting evidence for a former periodic cover of Ordovician strata in the Archaean terrane of south western Greenland, extending deep into the heart of the Laurentian landmass.

  • Trilobite fauna of the Telt Bugt Formation (Cambrian Series 2-Miaolingian Series), western North Greenland (Laurentia)
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Bulletin of the Geological Society of Denmark. - : GEOLOGICAL SOC DENMARK. - 0011-6297 .- 2245-7070. ; 69, s. 1-33
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Trilobites dominantly of middle Cambrian (Miaolingian Series, Wulivan Stage) age are described from the Telt Bugt Formation of Daugaard-Jensen Land, western North Greenland (Laurentia), which is a correlative of the Cape Wood Formation of Inglefield Land and Ellesmere Island, Nunavut. Four biozones are recognised in Daugaard-Jensen Land, representing the Delamaran and Topazan regional stages of the western USA. The basal Plagiura-Poliella Biozone, with Mexicella cf. robusta, Kochiella, Fieldaspis? and Plagiura?, straddles the Cambrian Series 2-Miaolingian Series boundary. It is overlain by the Mexicella mexicana Biozone, recognised for the first time in Greenland, with rare specimens of Cahorcella arrojosensis. The Glossopleura walcotti Biozone, with Glossopleura, Clavaspidella and Polypleuraspis, dominates the succession in eastern Daugaard-Jensen Land but is seemingly not represented in the type section in western outcrops, likely reflecting the drastic thinning of the formation towards the north-west. The Ehmaniella Biozone, with Ehmaniella, Clappaspsis, Blainia and Blainiopsis, is the youngest recognised biozone. The presence of Drumian Stage strata reported elsewhere in North Greenland and adjacent Ellesmere Island has not been confirmed in Daugaard-Jensen Land. Lower beds of the Cass Fjord Formation, which directly overlie the Telt Bugt Formation, are assigned to the Guzhangian Stage. New species: Fieldaspis? iubilaei, Ehmaniella tupegarfik.

  • Upper Ordovician graptolites and biostratigraphy of the Rostanga 1 core, Scania, S. Sweden
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Bulletin of the Geological Society of Denmark. - 0011-6297. ; 49, s. 41540-41540
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • drilling at Rostanga in 1997, referred to as Rostanga 1, penetrated a significant portion of the Upper Ordovician-Lower Silurian succession in this classical Lower Palaeozoic outcrop area in W-central Scania. In descending order the Upper Ordovician of the core embraces the following units (stratigraphic thickness in parenthesis): Lindegard Mudstone (27.8 m), Fjacka Shale (13.6 m), Mossen Formation (0.6 m), Skagen Formation (0.8 m), and Sularp Formation (19.9 m+). Grapiolites are described from the Lindegard Mudstone, the Fjacka Shale, and the Mossen Formation. The graptolites are classified into 12 taxa, among which 9 are identified to species. Graptolites are very rare in the Mossen Formation, which has yielded only two specimens of Pseudoclimacograptus scharenbergi. The Fjacka Shale yielded a fairly diverse graptolite fauna, indicative of the Pleurograptus linearis Zone. This zone is succeeded by the Dicellograptus complanatus Zone, with the zonal index appearing in the lower part of the LindegArd Mudstone immediately above graptolites indicative of the P. linearis Zone. No graptolites were recovered from the Skagen Formation and the Sularp Formation.

  • Palaeomagnetism of Eocene Talerua Member lavas on Hareoen, West Greenland
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Bulletin of the Geological Society of Denmark. - 0011-6297. ; 52:1, s. 27-37
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The results of a paleomagnetic sampling carried out along two vertical profiles (altogether 19 lava flows, 126 samples) covering the entire stratigraphy of the Talerua Member lavas (similar to 39 Myr old) that outcrop on the island Hareoen are presented and represent some of the youngest volcanism in the West Greenland flood volcanic province. Rock magnetic experiments and microprobe analysis demonstrate that the dominant magnetic mineral in all Studied lavas is titanomagnetite that has experienced variable amounts of high temperature cleuteric oxidation as well as low temperature hydrothermal oxidation. Based on detailed demagnetization experiments, well-defined palaeomagnetic site-mean directions were isolated from all 19 lavas. The composite profile contains two magnetic polarity zones suggesting a maximum duration of Talerua Member volcanism of -1.4 Ma. After grouping flows having the same remanent magnetic field direction, 13 individual readings of the palaeomagnetic fields were obtained. The palaeomagnetic pole with coordinates 76.3 degrees N, 201.5 degrees E (A95=7.4 degrees, K=32.7, N=13) is in good accordance with paleomagnetic poles from other continents rotated back to Greenland using plate kinematic rotation poles.

  • Fritzolenellus lapworthi (Peach and Horne, 1892) from the lower Cambrian (Cambrian Series 2) Bastion Formation of North-East Greenland
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Bulletin of the Geological Society of Denmark. - 0011-6297 .- 2245-7070. ; 56, s. 1-10
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Fossil collections from the lower Cambrian (Cambrian Series 2) Bastion Formation at Albert Heim Bjerge in North-East Greenland acquired during 1950 and 1951 contain sonic 60 specimens of olenelid trilobites. Although morphologically variable, the material can be attributed to a single species, Fritzolenellus lapworthi (Peach and Horne, 1892), previously known from the 'Fucoid' Beds of north-west Scotland.   Immature specimens allow a first, limited, description of the ontogeny of Fritzolenellus. The presence of F. lapworthi in North-East Greenland   offers an important tie point for correlation of Olenellus-bearing strata (Cambrian Series 2, Stage 4) across eastern Laurentia.

  • Anopolenus henrici Salter, a middle Cambrian Drumian centropleurid trilobite from the Alum Shale Formation of Scandinavia
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Bulletin of the Geological Society of Denmark. - : GEOLOGICAL SOC DENMARK. - 0011-6297 .- 2245-7070. ; 66, s. 223-228
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Centropleurid trilobites include five genera of which Centropleura Angelin, Anopolenus Salter, Clarella Howell and Luhops Snajdr are known from eight species in the traditional middle Cambrian (Miaolingian Series, Drumian Stage) of Sweden and Denmark (Bornholm). Beishanella Xiang & Zhang has not been recorded in Scandinavia so far, and no centropleurids have been reported from Norway. Of these taxa, only Centropleura is common in Scandinavia. Two pygidia previously identified as Centropleura sp. and Anopolenus sp. from erratics in Germany and Bornholm, respectively, as well as a new pygidum from Scania in Sweden are here identified as Anopolenus henrici Salter. Elsewhere, the species is known from Wales, Avalonian Canada, Siberia, Alaska, and Sardinia, occurring in the A. atavus and P. punctuosus zones (the former in Siberia only). The presence of this species increases the known diversity of Centropleuridae in Scandinavia and is important for correlation between Baltica and Avalonia.

  • Glacial erratic boulders from Jutland, Denmark, feature an uppermost lower Cambrian fauna of the Lingulid Sandstone Member of Västergötland, Sweden
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Bulletin of the Geological Society of Denmark. - 0011-6297 .- 2245-7070. ; 63, s. 59-86
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Reinvestigation of glacial erratic boulders from Jutland, Denmark, and from northern Germany, has revealed a moderately diverse fauna with the trilobites Holmiella? sp., Epichalnipsus anartanus,Epichalnipsus sp. A, Epichalnipsus sp. B, and Berabichia erratica, three species of lingulid brachiopods, one hyolith species, and trace fossils comparable to Halopoa imbricata. Comparison with faunasfrom the Cambrian of Scandinavia strongly suggested a biostratigraphic position equivalent tothe uppermost part of the (revised) Holmia kjerulfi–‘Ornamentaspis’ linnarssoni to lowermost Comluella?–Ellipsocephalus lunatus zones sensu Nielsen & Schovsbo (2011), or the lower to middle partof the traditional ‘Ornamentaspis’ linnarssoni Zone, but probably a particular horizon and biofaciesnot yet discovered in Scandinavia. Considerations of glacial transport regimes and the distributionof comparable rock units, as well as a petrographical analysis of the material from the studiederratic boulders and rocks from outcrops in Sweden, indicate that the boulders were derived fromthe Lingulid Sandstone Member of the File Haidar Formation and the source area is situated inthe vicinity of the present-day outcrops in the Halleberg–Hunneberg area, Västergötland, Sweden.

  • The middle Cambrian Ptychagnostus punctuosus and Goniagnostus nathorsti zones in Vastergotland, Sweden
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Bulletin of the Geological Society of Denmark. - 0011-6297. ; 51:1, s. 39-45
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • New trilobite discoveries from eight localities in Vastergotland, south-central Sweden, demonstrate that the middle Cambrian Ptychagnostus punctuosus and Goniagnostus nathorsti zones are present in most Lower Palaeozoic outcrop areas of Vastergotland, though as a thin and impersistent conglomeratic limestone, up to approximately 15 cm thick. These zones have not previously been recognised in Vastergotland, except for a thin bed of limestone on Hunneberg.
