  • Unveiling the experiences of young people in foster care: Perspectives from Portugal and Nigeria
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: International Social Work. - : SAGE Publications. - 0020-8728 .- 1461-7234. ; 62:1, s. 433-446
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article examines the lived experiences of young people in the process of leaving the care of SOS Children’s Villages in both Nigeria and Portugal. Interviews were conducted with 12 young people and data were analysed using content analysis. Young people’s lived experiences were captured in three emerging dimensions of past, present and future experiences. The study recommends resolving young people’s childhood conflicts towards a successful transition into adulthood. It also has implications for policy practice in tailoring the present experiences in preparing young people for the demands of life after care.

  • Social issues and post-disaster recovery: A qualitative study in an Iranian context
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: INTERNATIONAL SOCIAL WORK. - : SAGE Publications. - 0020-8728 .- 1461-7234. ; 58:5, s. 689-703
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The physical impacts of a disaster are usually the most obvious impacts, and they are easily measured. However, there is not sufficient in-depth understanding of social issues arising after disasters. This qualitative study explored three main concepts regarding social issues after an earthquake in an Iranian context: social vulnerability, social uncertainty and confusion, and ignorance of local social capital. Negligence of social issues after disasters leads to delays in returning back to normal life. Policymakers are encouraged to take a comprehensive plan into account which considers these issues and facilitates the process of returning to normal life after earthquakes.

  • Reduced working hours and stress in the Swedish social services : A longitudinal study
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: International Social Work. - : SAGE Publications. - 0020-8728 .- 1461-7234. ; 60:4, s. 897-913
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Stress has been reported among Swedish social workers for over a decade. Survey data from a longitudinal quasi-experimental trial in the public sector of reduced working hours, with a proportional decrease in workload and retained full pay, were used to examine the effect on stress, symptoms of Exhaustion syndrome, psychosocial work characteristics and work-life balance in social workers. Reduced working hours had a positive effect on restorative sleep, stress, memory difficulties, negative emotion, sleepiness, fatigue and exhaustion both on workdays and weekends; on sleep quality on weekends; and on demands, instrumental manager support and work intrusion on private life.

  • 2021
  • Ingår i: International Social Work. - : SAGE Publications. - 0020-8728 .- 1461-7234. ; 64:5, s. 745-749
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • We discuss the pandemic strategies in Sweden concerning social psychiatry during the first wave. We argue that the omission of social workers’ perspective in the COVID-19 strategy has negatively impacted clients with psychiatric disabilities and has also weakened the overall pandemic strategy.

  • Firewalls : A necessary tool to enable social rights for undocumented migrants in social work
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: International Social Work. - : SAGE PUBLICATIONS LTD. - 0020-8728 .- 1461-7234. ; 65:4, s. 678-692
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Firewalls are clear divisions between border policing and the provision of basic social rights. They have a dual character: to ensure that no information collected with the purpose of safeguarding basic social rights should be shared for immigration control purposes; and that migrants should not be subject to immigration control when being present at, or in the vicinity, of religious, private and public institutions upholding and providing social rights. This article suggests a normative argument for firewalls in the context of social work and develops the concept theoretically as a principle practised and negotiated at different scales.

  • 2017
  • Ingår i: International Social Work. - : SAGE Publications. - 0020-8728 .- 1461-7234. ; 60:6, s. 1370-1386
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article investigates a group of 149 students studying social work and social administration at Makerere University, Uganda, and explores differences according to gender, sponsorship, geographical and socio-economic background, and parents’ educational level. Data used derive from a questionnaire collected in spring 2014. Results show that male students have access to public sponsorship to a greater degree than female students, regardless of their background. Female students are more dependent upon private sponsorship and their parents’ educational level for entry to higher education.

  • The multicultural paradox: the challenge of accomodating both power and trust in child protection
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: International Social Work. - 0020-8728 .- 1461-7234. ; 2010:54(4), s. 535-549
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article investigates if discrimination is under-communicated in child welfare services in the multicultural welfare state of Sweden and if so how that affects the wellbeing of marginalized migrant families. It was found that reciprocal trust in a professional relationship is a powerful vehicle for inclusion, both in a relational and societal meaning.

  • Universal old-age pension in an aging China : can China learn from Sweden?
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: International Social Work. - : Sage Publications. - 0020-8728 .- 1461-7234. ; 59:6, s. 922-937
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This work addresses the two questions of how China can respond to its rapidly aging population and whether China can learn from the experiences of Sweden when establishing a universal pension system. Two different demographic transitions are analysed: the slowly aging Swedish population, and the rapidly aging Chinese population. This work discusses adaptations and dilemmas in the labour market and in family structures in response to balances and imbalances in these demographic structures. Measuring instruments need to be adapted to a changing situation. Family care contributions must be recognized. What is considered a fair distribution of welfare must be further analysed.

  • 2012
  • Ingår i: International Social Work. - : Sage Publications. - 0020-8728 .- 1461-7234. ; 55:4, s. 504-521
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study explores the consequences of the European Union’s fishing agreements with a few African countries for individuals in local communities. The empirical results show that European fishing in African waters has destructive consequences for local fishing communities and leads to increasing migration from fishing communities to Europe where immigrants are facing increasing discrimination. It is argued that social work should consider new global transformations and build global alliances in order to fight against structural inequalities and improve individual life chances.

  • Global social work ethics and international field training : The experiences and practice dilemmas of Norwegian and Swedish social work students
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: International Social Work. - : Sage Publications. - 0020-8728 .- 1461-7234. ; 65:1, s. 35-48
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article explores global social work ethics and international field training based on the experiences and practice dilemmas of Norwegian and Swedish social work students. It employs a postcolonial perspective to answer 'What are key ethical challenges for the students?' and 'How can social work educators promote ethical awareness in international field training?' based on focus group interviews and field reports. The results show that international field training contributes to both deepening some students' critical knowledge and reinforcing others their colonial discourses. It is argued that social work educators play an important role for students' critical positioning and knowledge.

  • Socioeconomic development initiatives and women’s experiences of marital violence in rural Bangladesh
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: International Social Work. - : SAGE Publications. - 0020-8728 .- 1461-7234. ; 65:5, s. 1000-1019
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Socioeconomic development initiatives (SDIs) have become a controversial issue. In giving skill trainings and credit supports, practitioners assume that SDI participation will enhance women’s income/dignity. Some studies have indicated that SDIs reduce women’s exposure to marital violence (MV), while others have shown that they increase spousal conflicts/MV. Our study explains how SDI participation may influence women’s marital life. This explorative study adopted a grounded theory design. Data included 17 participating-women’s interviews. It revealed that many women experienced further marital subordination, spousal conflicts, and MV. Yet women with strong motivation increased marital dignity/safety. Caring husbands facilitated this. If men can be involved in supporting women, impacts of SDIs will be substantial.

  • The Capability Approach in Social Work Research: A Scoping Review of Research Addressing Practical Social Work
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: International Social Work. - : SAGE Publications. - 0020-8728 .- 1461-7234. ; 65:2, s. 224-239
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study reports the findings from a scoping review of the use of the capability approach in social work research. We identified 17 peer-reviewed journal articles which actively used the capability approach and addressed social work practice. The purpose was to examine how the use of the capability approach was linked to policies, practices and social justice approaches in social work research. The merits and challenges of the capability approach in social work research are discussed. Four main applications of the capability approach were found: as a tool for social workers in practice, to explore the subjective sense of well-being, to address social inequalities on a structural level, and as a way of evaluating social practices. The capability approach was framed as congruent with the aims of social work, and as a call for action for social workers to promote social justice, human dignity and well-being. Another finding was that empowerment, mostly viewed as a tool for social workers to promote strength in individuals, was closely connected to using a capability approach. The contradictory use of empowerment in social work may carry some lessons for future development of a capability approach in social work. The review indicates that the capability approach is used in a range of different ways and acknowledged as a valuable tool for research in social work.

  • 2015
  • Ingår i: International Social Work. - : Sage Publications. - 0020-8728 .- 1461-7234. ; 58:1, s. 175-185
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Universities in the Global North teach social work in the Global South from time to time. This article aims to describe and discuss such projects from a pedagogical aspect, with a focus on teaching styles. Nine interviews were conducted with Swedish teachers who had experience of teaching in Iraqi Kurdistan. The article sketches their strategies they developed during their period of teaching social work abroad. The teachers had different ways of handling the teaching situation and the styles were divided into three major types. These styles are referred to here as Co-traveller, Therapeutic and Socratic.

  • 2000
  • Ingår i: International Social Work. - 0020-8728 .- 1461-7234. ; 43:1, s. 49-60
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The authors summarize the dramatic impact that ongoing global processes are having on the social work profession. They review the literature on international and cross-cultural social work education, citing the rationales for and barriers to incorporating such content, and discussing models of introducing international content into social work education. They suggest the need for developing new approaches to bring international/crosscultural perspectives and content into the mainstream of social work education, and to create more specialized professional programmes.

  • Orphanhood and mistreatment drive children to leave home - A study from early AIDS-affected Kagera region, Tanzania
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: International Social Work. - : SAGE Publications. - 0020-8728 .- 1461-7234. ; 60:5, s. 1218-1232
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this mixed-method study was to explore the trajectories of leaving home, and views and experiences among children and youth in the Kagera region in Tanzania, who have lived on the streets or been domestic workers. The main results showed that orphanhood and mistreatment were the main reasons for leaving home: few children lived with their parents before they left, and leaving home was a complex process over several years where three trajectories were identified. The children who had left home showed strong agency and competency but lived in vulnerable conditions, especially young children living on the streets.

  • 2022
  • Ingår i: International Social Work. - UK : Sage Publications. - 0020-8728 .- 1461-7234. ; 65:1, s. 49-63
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • During the last few years, there has been a growing concern for environmental justice within international social work. This article connects to such concerns and aims to present and discuss environmental injustices faced by local communities in Mauritius, Peru and Sweden. Primary data were collected through face-to-face semi-structured interviews with a total of 25 key representatives of local communities in the three countries. Secondary materials were combined with the primary data in ATLAS-ti v.8.3 for a deductive critical discourse analysis. The findings describe the substantive, distributive and procedural environmental injustices faced by local communities in the three case studies. The article then considers the implications of the findings for international social work interventions in promoting environmental justice. The article concludes on the need for international social workers to continue their efforts and practices towards achieving environmental justice for all, in promoting global sustainable development.

  • 2015
  • Ingår i: International Social Work. - : Sage Publications. - 0020-8728 .- 1461-7234. ; 58:4, s. 484-494
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • To develop social work students’ understanding of the global context of social work, an asynchronous video uploading project was constructed to link social work classrooms on six continents. Students in social work classrooms around the world video-recorded their responses to prompting questions and uploaded them to a project webpage, to which all classrooms had access. Asynchronous uploading allowed students to view and then respond via video to other students without concern for time zone synchronization. This pedagogical approach was designed and implemented to broaden students’ intercultural competence, perspectives on international social work, and awareness of global social problems.

  • 2015
  • Ingår i: International Social Work. - : Sage Publications. - 0020-8728 .- 1461-7234. ; 58:3, s. 375-384
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Water resources in India are projected to face severe climate-induced stress. In the North-Eastern Hill region, where lifestyles are closely connected to nature, this holds great implications for human development. While scientific knowledge regarding climate change and water is growing at global and regional scales, an equally diverse body of knowledge on the human dimensions of the same at local levels is weak. This article attempts to bridge this knowledge gap by presenting micro-level evidence on the gendered impact of increasing water stress and the innovative gendered local adaptive strategies in this region. It urges for the need to re-think on adaptation planning, basing it on local templates for greater sustainability.

  • 2024
  • Ingår i: International Social Work. - 0020-8728 .- 1461-7234.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Health social workers, like social workers in general, have been found to utilise research knowledge to a low degree. No previous study has made comparisons based on the following: higher education, job tenure and workplace. This article is based on statistical comparisons between 1236 health social workers in Sweden working in various healthcare contexts. The central finding was that higher education was the factor with the largest impact. Workplace and especially job tenure were found to be less influential. An implication for practice is to raise the knowledge requirements in terms of research knowledge utilisation already from bachelor’s degree level.

Based on interviews with the asylum social workers and the theoretical concepts of jurisdiction and professional discretion, this study explores how they experienced their work and developed their specialist competence and strategies for health social work with migrants. The findings show that they not only relieved staff and supported patients and relatives but also systemised the knowledge about health social work with migrants and created a professional specialty with a socially, rather than medically, defined group of patients.

    • The article analyses whether social work in Russia can have an empowering effect on the poor, given the survival of hierarchical structure of organizations and women's responsibility for social welfare. Although state policies promote charity rather than empowerment, this study also discusses to what extent women's paid and unpaid work could stimulate processes of empowerment through supportive measures that open up possibilities for the poor to engage in changing their own situation. The empirical data are based on interviews with social work specialists, NGO representatives and local politicians in two Russian regions.

  • Ingår i: International Social Work. - : SAGE Publications. - 1461-7234 .- 0020-8728. ; 53:4, s. 489-509
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study is based on qualitative interviews with 20 adult international adoptees of colour and eight adoptive parents with internationally adopted children in Sweden regarding their experiences of racialization, ethnic identifications and coping strategies. The findings suggest that the non-white bodies of the adoptees are constantly made significant in their everyday lives in interactions with the white Swedish majority population, whether expressed as 'curious questions' concerning the ethnic origin of the adoptees or as outright aggressive racialization. The study argues that race has to be taken into consideration by Swedish adoption research and the Swedish adoption community, to be able to fully grasp the high preponderance of psychic ill health among adult adoptees as found by quantitative adoption research.

    • This research seeks to explore the experiences of social work educators and students working and learning from home. The findings, from an international survey sample of 166 educators and students, showed that the respondents faced issues with private and personal boundaries, felt the impact of working and learning from home on both physical and emotional levels, and experienced challenges to what was expected of them. The respondents primarily used two types of coping mechanisms to manage these challenges. These findings contribute to a broader discussion of the impact of working and learning from home and are relevant for education administrators responsible for their employees’ and students’ well-being.

It discusses the legal framework for their protection, while acknowledging that not all professionals are aware of or have access to the legal mechanisms meant to safeguard older people's interests. It also discusses the role social work can play in protecting older people's rights. It further recommends that social workers work to increase solidarity between generations and bring about social justice and respect for diversity. It concludes by highlighting the need to bring anti-discriminatory social work into mainstream social work education and the professional regulation of social work.

It was found that a reciprocal and trustful relationship in combination with attention to the special needs of migrant families is a powerful vehicle for inclusion.
