  • On the decrease of kinetic energy with depth in wave–current interactions
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Mathematische Annalen. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0025-5831 .- 1432-1807. ; 378:3-4, s. 853-872
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We study wave–current interactions in two-dimensional water flows with constant vorticity over a flat bed. We establish decay rates for the velocity beneath spatially periodic surface waves without any restrictions on the wave amplitude. The approach relies on complex function theory and overcomes the intricacies inherent to nonlinear flow patterns by taking advantage of specific structural properties of the governing equations for water waves.

    • We introduce a new division formula on projective space which provides explicit solutions to various polynomial division problems with sharp degree estimates. We consider simple examples as the classical Macaulay theorem as well as a quite recent result by Hickel, related to the effective Nullstellensatz. We also obtain a related result that generalizes Max Noether's classical AF + BG theorem.

  • Ingår i: Mathematische Annalen. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0025-5831 .- 1432-1807. ; 380:1-2, s. 349-391
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • On a reduced analytic space X we introduce the concept of a generalized cycle, which extends the notion of a formal sum of analytic subspaces to include also a form part. We then consider a suitable equivalence relation and corresponding quotient B(X) that we think of as an analogue of the Chow group and a refinement of de Rham cohomology. This group allows us to study both global and local intersection theoretic properties. We provide many B-analogues of classical intersection theoretic constructions: For an analytic subspace V⊂ X we define a B-Segre class, which is an element of B(X) with support in V. It satisfies a global King formula and, in particular, its multiplicities at each point coincide with the Segre numbers of V. When V is cut out by a section of a vector bundle we interpret this class as a Monge–Ampère-type product. For regular embeddings we construct a B-analogue of the Gysin morphism.

  • The formation of black holes in spherically symmetric gravitational collapse
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: MATHEMATISCHE ANNALEN. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0025-5831 .- 1432-1807. ; 350:3, s. 683-705
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We consider the spherically symmetric, asymptotically flat Einstein-Vlasov system. We find explicit conditions on the initial data, with ADM mass M, such that the resulting spacetime has the following properties: there is a family of radially outgoing null geodesics where the area radius r along each geodesic is bounded by 2M, the timelike lines r=c [0,2M] are incomplete, and for r > 2M the metric converges asymptotically to the Schwarzschild metric with mass M. The initial data that we construct guarantee the formation of a black hole in the evolution. We give examples of such initial data with the additional property that the solutions exist for all r ≥ 0 and all Schwarzschild time, i. e., we obtain global existence in Schwarzschild coordinates in situations where the initial data are not small. Some of our results are also established for the Einstein equations coupled to a general matter model characterized by conditions on the matter quantities.

  • Suspension spectra of matrix algebras, the rank filtration, and rational noncommutative CW-spectra
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Mathematische Annalen. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0025-5831 .- 1432-1807. ; 386:1-2, s. 35-84
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In a companion paper (Arone et al. in Noncommutative CW-spectra as enriched presheaves on matrix algebras, arXiv:2101.09775, 2021) we introduced the stable ∞-category of noncommutative CW-spectra, which we denoted NSp. Let M denote the full spectrally enriched subcategory of NSp whose objects are the non-commutative suspension spectra of matrix algebras. In Arone et al. (2021) we proved that NSp is equivalent to the ∞-category of spectral presheaves on M. In this paper we investigate the structure of M, and derive some consequences regarding the structure of NSp. To begin with, we introduce a rank filtration of M. We show that the mapping spectra of M map naturally to the connective K-theory spectrum ku, and that the rank filtration of M is a lift of the classical rank filtration of ku. We describe the subquotients of the rank filtration in terms of spaces of direct-sum decompositions which also arose in the study of K-theory and of Weiss’s orthogonal calculus. We prove that the rank filtration stabilizes rationally after the first stage. Using this we give an explicit model of the rationalization of NSp as presheaves of rational spectra on the category of finite-dimensional Hilbert spaces and unitary transformations up to scaling. Our results also have consequences for the p-localization and the chromatic localization of M.

  • On time dependent domains for the degenerate p-parabolic equation : Carleson estimate and Holder continuity
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Mathematische Annalen. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0025-5831 .- 1432-1807. ; 364:1-2, s. 667-686
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper we propose a definition of "parabolic NTA" for solutions to the degenerate p-parabolic equation. Given this definition we prove the Carleson estimate, originally proved for this equation in Avelin et al. (J Eur Math Soc, 2015) for cylindrical domains. Moreover we study a non-optimal, stronger "outer corkscrew" condition, such that we obtain Holder continuity up to the boundary, for non-negative solutions vanishing on a part of the boundary.

  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Mathematische Annalen. - : Springer Berlin/Heidelberg. - 0025-5831 .- 1432-1807. ; 383:3-4, s. 1775-1824
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A sharp pointwise differential inequality for vectorial second-order partial differential operators, with Uhlenbeck structure, is offered. As a consequence, optimal second-order regularity properties of solutions to nonlinear elliptic systems in domains in R-n are derived. Both local and global estimates are established. Minimal assumptions on the boundary of the domain are required for the latter. In the special case of the p-Laplace system, our conclusions broaden the range of the admissible values of the exponent p previously known.

  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Mathematische Annalen. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0025-5831 .- 1432-1807. ; 370:1-2, s. 863-915
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We prove that the Atiyah-Singer Dirac operator D-g in L-2 depends Riesz continuously L-infinity on perturbations of complete metrics on a smooth manifold. The Lipschitz bound for the map g -> D-g(1 + D-g(2))(-1/2) depends on bounds on Ricci curvature and its first derivatives as well as a lower bound on injectivity radius. Our proof uses harmonic analysis techniques related to Caldern's first commutator and the Kato square root problem. We also show perturbation results for more general functions of general Dirac-type operators on vector bundles.

  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Mathematische Annalen. - : Springer. - 0025-5831 .- 1432-1807. ; 352:1, s. 1-26
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We prove a special case of a dynamical analogue of the classical Mordell- Lang conjecture. Specifically, let phi be a rational function with no periodic critical points other than those that are totally invariant, and consider the diagonal action of phi on (P(1))(g). If the coefficients of phi are algebraic, we show that the orbit of a point outside the union of the proper preperiodic subvarieties of (P(1))(g) has only finite intersection with any curve contained in (P(1))(g). We also show that our result holds for indecomposable polynomials phi with coefficients in C. Our proof uses results from p-adic dynamics together with an integrality argument. The extension to polynomials defined over C uses the method of specialization coupled with some new results of Medvedev and Scanlon for describing the periodic plane curves under the action of (phi, phi) on A(2).

  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Mathematische Annalen. - 0025-5831 .- 1432-1807.

    • In the probabilistic construction of Kahler-Einstein metrics on a complex projective algebraic manifold X-involving random point processes on X-a key role is played by the partition function. In this work a new quantitative bound on the partition function is obtained. It yields, in particular, a new direct analytic proof that X admits a Kahler-Einstein metrics if it is uniformly Gibbs stable. The proof makes contact with the quantization approach to Kahler-Einstein geometry.

In this paper we study certain counting functions which represent the numbers of solutions of systems of linear inequalities arising in the theory of Diophantine approximation. We develop a method that allows us to explain the random-like behavior that these functions exhibit and prove a central limit theorem for them. Our approach is based on a quantitative study of higher-order correlations for functions defined on the space of lattices and a novel technique for estimating cumulants of Siegel transforms.

  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Mathematische Annalen. - 0025-5831 .- 1432-1807. ; In Press
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We develop a general framework to study hyperuniformity of various mathematical models of quasicrystals. Using this framework we provide examples of non-hyperuniform quasicrystals which unlike previous examples are not limit-quasiperiodic. Some of these examples are even anti-hyperuniform or have a positive asymptotic number variance. On the other hand we establish hyperuniformity for a large class of mathematical quasicrystals in Euclidean spaces of arbitrary dimension. For certain models of quasicrystals we moreover establish that hyperuniformity holds for a generic choice of the underlying parameters. For quasicrystals arising from the cut-and-project method we conclude that their hyperuniformity depends on subtle diophantine properties of the underlying lattice and window and is by no means automatic.

  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Mathematische Annalen. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0025-5831 .- 1432-1807. ; In Press
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We consider approximate lattices in nilpotent Lie groups. With every such approximate lattice one can associate a hull dynamical system and, to every invariant measure of this system, a corresponding unitary representation. Our results concern both the spectral theory of the representation and the topological dynamics of the system. On the spectral side we construct explicit eigenfunctions for a large collection of central characters using weighted periodization against a twisted fiber density function. We construct this density function by establishing a parametric version of the Bombieri-Taylor conjecture and apply our results to locate high-intensity Bragg peaks in the central diffraction of an approximate lattice. On the topological side we show that under some mild regularity conditions the hull of an approximate lattice admits a sequence of continuous horizontal factors, where the final horizontal factor is abelian and each intermediate factor corresponds to a central extension. We apply this to extend theorems of Meyer and Dani-Navada concerning number-theoretic properties of Meyer sets to the nilpotent setting.

    • We study the limiting distribution of the rational points under a horizontal translation along a sequence of expanding closed horocycles on the modular surface. Using spectral methods we confirm equidistribution of these sample points for any translate when the sequence of horocycles expands within a certain polynomial range. We show that the equidistribution fails for generic translates and a slightly faster expanding rate. We also prove both equidistribution and non-equidistribution results by obtaining explicit limiting measures while allowing the sequence of horocycles to expand arbitrarily fast. Similar results are also obtained for translates of primitive rational points.

    • We prove Lp bounds for the extensions of standard multilinear Calderón–Zygmund operators to tuples of UMD spaces tied by a natural product structure. The product can, for instance, mean the pointwise product in UMD function lattices, or the composition of operators in the Schatten-von Neumann subclass of the algebra of bounded operators on a Hilbert space. We do not require additional assumptions beyond UMD on each space—in contrast to previous results, we e.g. show that the Rademacher maximal function property is not necessary. The obtained generality allows for novel applications. For instance, we prove new versions of fractional Leibniz rules via our results concerning the boundedness of multilinear singular integrals in non-commutative Lp spaces. Our proof techniques combine a novel scheme of induction on the multilinearity index with dyadic-probabilistic techniques in the UMD space setting.

    • We study exact Lagrangian immersions with one double point of a closed orientable manifold into . We prove that if the Maslov grading of the double point does not equal then is homotopy equivalent to the sphere, and if, in addition, the Lagrangian Gauss map of the immersion is stably homotopic to that of the Whitney immersion, then bounds a parallelizable -manifold. The hypothesis on the Gauss map always holds when or when . The argument studies a filling of obtained from solutions to perturbed Cauchy-Riemann equations with boundary on the image of the immersion. This leads to a new and simplified proof of some of the main results of Ekholm and Smith (Exact Lagrangian immersions with a single double point 2011)). which treated Lagrangian immersions in the case by applying similar techniques to a Lagrange surgery of the immersion, as well as to an extension of these results to the odd-dimensional case.

    • We construct a new invariant of transverse links in the standard contactstructure on R^3. This invariant is a doubly filtered version of the knot contact homology differential graded algebra (DGA) of the link, see (Ekholm et al., Knot contacthomology, Arxiv:1109.1542, 2011; Ng, Duke Math J 141(2):365–406, 2008). Herethe knot contact homology of a link in R3is the Legendrian contact homology DGAof its conormal lift into the unit cotangent bundle SR^3of R^3, and the filtrations are constructed by counting intersections of the holomorphic disks of the DGA differential with two conormal lifts of the contact structure. We also present a combinatorial formula for the filtered DGA in terms of braid representatives of transverse links andapply it to show that the new invariant is independent of previously known invariantsof transverse links.

    • In this paper we prove optimal interior regularity for solutions to the obstacle problem for a class of second order differential operators of Kolmogorov type. We treat smooth obstacles as well as non-smooth obstacles. All our proofs follow the same line of thought and are based on blow-ups, compactness, barriers and arguments by contradiction. The problem considered arises in financial mathematics, when considering path-dependent derivative contracts with early exercise feature.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We introduce the notion of tracial amenability for actions of discrete groups on unital, tracial C∗-algebras, as a weakening of amenability where all the relevant approximations are done in the uniform trace norm. We characterize tracial amenability with various equivalent conditions, including topological amenability of the induced action on the trace space. Our main result concerns the structure of crossed products: for groups containing the free group F2, we show that outer, tracially amenable actions on simple, unital, Z-stable C∗-algebras always have purely infinite crossed products. Finally, we give concrete examples of tracially amenable actions of free groups on simple, unital AF-algebras.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • First the Griffiths line bundle of a Q-VHS V is generalized to a Griffiths character grif(G, mu, r) associated to any triple (G, mu, r), where G is a connected reductive group over an arbitrary field F, mu is an element of X-*(G) is a cocharacter (over (F) over bar) and r : G -> GL(V) is an F-representation; the classical bundle studied by Griffiths is recovered by taking F = Q, G the Mumford-Tate group of V, r : G -> GL(V) the tautological representation afforded by a very general fiber and pulling back along the period map the line bundle associated to grif(G, mu, r). The more general setting also gives rise to the Griffiths bundle in the analogous situation in characteristic p given by a scheme mapping to a stack of G-Zips. When G is F-simple, we show that, up to positive multiples, the Griffiths character grif(G, mu, r) (and thus also the Griffiths line bundle) is essentially independent of r with central kernel, and up to some identifications is given explicitly by -mu. As an application, we show that the Griffiths line bundle of a projective G-Zip(mu)-scheme is nef.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, we explore a sharp phase transition phenomenon which occurs for (Formula presented.)-Carleman classes with exponents (Formula presented.). These classes are defined as for the standard Carleman classes, only the (Formula presented.)-bounds are replaced by corresponding (Formula presented.)-bounds. We study the quasinorms (Formula presented.)for some weight sequence (Formula presented.) of positive real numbers, and consider as the corresponding (Formula presented.)-Carleman space the completion of a given collection of smooth test functions. To mirror the classical definition, we add the feature of dilatation invariance as well, and consider a larger soft-topology space, the (Formula presented.)-Carleman class. A particular degenerate instance is when (Formula presented.) for (Formula presented.) and (Formula presented.) for (Formula presented.). This would give the (Formula presented.)-Sobolev spaces, which were analyzed by Peetre, following an initial insight by Douady. Peetre found that these (Formula presented.)-Sobolev spaces are highly degenerate for (Formula presented.). Indeed, the canonical map (Formula presented.) fails to be injective, and there is even an isomorphism (Formula presented.)corresponding to the canonical map (Formula presented.) acting on the test functions. This means that e.g. the function and its derivative lose contact with each other (they “disconnect”). Here, we analyze this degeneracy for the more general (Formula presented.)-Carleman classes defined by a weight sequence (Formula presented.). If (Formula presented.) has some regularity properties, and if the given collection of test functions is what we call (Formula presented.)-tame, then we find that there is a sharp boundary, defined in terms of the weight (Formula presented.): on the one side, we get Douady–Peetre’s phenomenon of “disconnexion”, while on the other, the completion of the test functions consists of (Formula presented.)-smooth functions and the canonical map (Formula presented.) is correspondingly well-behaved in the completion. We also look at the more standard second phase transition, between non-quasianalyticity and quasianalyticity, in the (Formula presented.) setting, with (Formula presented.).

    • For a bounded domain Omega subset of R-n and p > n, Morrey's inequality implies that there is c > 0 such that c parallel to u parallel to(p)(infinity) <= integral(Omega) vertical bar Du vertical bar(p) dx for each u belonging to the Sobolev space W-0(1,p) (Omega). We show that the ratio of any two extremal functions is constant provided that Omega is convex. We also show with concrete examples why this property fails to hold in general and verify that convexity is not a necessary condition for a domain to have this feature. As a by product, we obtain the uniqueness of an optimization problem involving the Green's function for the p-Laplacian.

    • In this article we construct the quotient M-1/P(K) of the infinite-level Lubin-Tate space M-1 by the parabolic subgroup P(K) subset of GL(n)(K) of block form (n - 1, 1) as a perfectoid space, generalizing the results of Ludwig (Forum Math Sigma 5:e17, 41, 2017) to arbitrary n and K/Q(p) finite. For this we prove some perfectoidness results for certain Harris-Taylor Shimura varieties at infinite level. As an application of the quotient construction we show a vanishing theorem for Scholze's candidate for the mod p Jacquet-Langlands and mod p local Langlands correspondence. An appendix by David Hansen gives a local proof of perfectoidness of M-1/P(K) when n = 2, and shows that M-1/Q(K) is not perfectoid for maximal parabolics Q not conjugate to P.

    • We study an equation lying 'mid-way' between the periodic Hunter-Saxton and Camassa-Holm equations, and which describes evolution of rotators in liquid crystals with external magnetic field and self-interaction. We prove that it is an Euler equation on the diffeomorphism group of the circle corresponding to a natural right-invariant Sobolev metric. We show that the equation is bihamiltonian and admits both cusped and smooth traveling-wave solutions which are natural candidates for solitons. We also prove that it is locally well-posed and establish results on the lifespan of its solutions. Throughout the paper we argue that despite similarities to the KdV, CH and HS equations, the new equation manifests several distinctive features that set it apart from the other three.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We establish several results concerning the expected general phenomenon that, given a multiplicative function f: N→ C, the values of f(n) and f(n+ a) are “generally” independent unless f is of a “special” form. First, we classify all bounded completely multiplicative functions having uniformly large gaps between its consecutive values. This implies the solution of the following folklore conjecture: for any completely multiplicative function f: N→ T we have lim infn→∞|f(n+1)-f(n)|=0.Second, we settle an old conjecture due to Chudakov (On the generalized characters. In: Actes du Congrès International des Mathématiciens (Nice, 1970), Tome 1, p. 487. Gauthier-Villars, Paris) that states that any completely multiplicative function f: N→ C that: (a) takes only finitely many values, (b) vanishes at only finitely many primes, and (c) has bounded discrepancy, is a Dirichlet character. This generalizes previous work of Tao on the Erdős Discrepancy Problem. Finally, we show that if many of the binary correlations of a 1-bounded multiplicative function are asymptotically equal to those of a Dirichlet character χ mod q then f(n) = χ′(n) nit for all n, where χ′ is a Dirichlet character modulo q and t∈ R. This establishes a variant of a conjecture of H. Cohn for multiplicative arithmetic functions. The main ingredients include the work of Tao on logarithmic Elliott conjecture, correlation formulas for pretentious multiplicative functions developed earlier by the first author and Szemeredi’s theorem for long arithmetic progressions.

  • Ingår i: Mathematische Annalen. - : Springer Verlag (Germany). - 0025-5831 .- 1432-1807. ; 357:4, s. 1509-1539
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The dependence on the domain for the Dirichlet eigenvalues of elliptic operators considered in bounded domains is studied. The proximity of domains is measured by a norm of the difference of two orthogonal projectors corresponding to the reference domain and the perturbed one; this allows to compare eigenvalues corresponding to domains that have non-smooth boundaries and different topology. The main result is an asymptotic formula in which the remainder is evaluated in terms of this quantity. Applications of this result are given. The results are new for the Laplace operator.

  • Ingår i: Mathematische Annalen. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0025-5831 .- 1432-1807. ; 368:3-4, s. 945-970
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We construct using relatively basic techniques a spectral sequence for exact Lagrangians in cotangent bundles similar to the one constructed by Fukaya, Seidel, and Smith. That spectral sequence was used to prove that exact relative spin Lagrangians in simply connected cotangent bundles with vanishing Maslov class are homology equivalent to the base (a similar result was also obtained by Nadler). The ideas in that paper were extended by Abouzaid who proved that vanishing Maslov class alone implies homotopy equivalence. In this paper we present a short proof of the fact that any exact Lagrangian with vanishing Maslov class is homology equivalent to the base and that the induced map on fundamental groups is an isomorphism. When the fundamental group of the base is pro-finite this implies homotopy equivalence.

  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Mathematische Annalen. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0025-5831 .- 1432-1807. ; , s. 1-42
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A circle, centered at the origin and with radius chosen so that it has non-empty intersection with the integer lattice (Formula presented.), gives rise to a probability measure on the unit circle in a natural way. Such measures, and their weak limits, are said to be attainable from lattice points on circles. We investigate the set of attainable measures and show that it contains all extreme points, in the sense of convex geometry, of the set of all probability measures that are invariant under some natural symmetries. Further, the set of attainable measures is closed under convolution, yet there exist symmetric probability measures that are not attainable. To show this, we study the geometry of projections onto a finite number of Fourier coefficients and find that the set of attainable measures has many singularities with a “fractal” structure. This complicated structure in some sense arises from prime powers—singularities do not occur for circles of radius (Formula presented.) if n is square free.
