  • Career barriers in the National Hockey League : An inductive thematic analysis of first-hand data from Canadian professional ice hockey players
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Sport Psychology. - Rome : Edizioni Luigi Pozzi s.r.l.. - 0047-0767. ; 50:5, s. 448-468
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The objectives of the study were: (a) to examine the Canadian National Hockey League (NHL) players’ internal and external barriers associated with the demands at each NHL career stage and status together with across-career barriers, and (b) to feature the Canadian NHL players’ barriers in the empirical career model. Five rookies, five veterans, and 13 retirees agreed to participate in conversational interviews before their transcripts underwent an interpretive thematic analysis (Braun & Clarke, 2012). Prospects face draft year pressure and team camp anxiety. Rookies and sophomores deal with insecurity with teammates and roster spot uncertainty. Prime veterans have to manage ruminating over missed chances while seasoned veterans struggled with social connections. Across career stages and statuses, NHL players deal with career threatening injuries and conflicts with head coach. After discussing how these results contribute to the empirical career model of Canadian NHL players and also extend the career transition and maladaptation literatures, delimitations and future directions are proposed for sport psychology researchers.

  • Effects of increased physical activity and motor training on motor skills and self-esteem. An intervention study in school years 1 through 9
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Sport Psychology. - : Edizioni Luigi Pozzi. - 0047-0767. ; 42:5, s. 461-479
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • OBJECTIVE: The aim was to study effects on motor skills and self-esteem of an extension of the Swedish school subject Physical Education and Health (PEW and motor training during nine school years. DESIGN AND METHOD: An intervention group (n=161) had PEH and motor training five lessons (225 nun) and a matched control group (n=102) had regular PEH two lessons (90 min) per week. The method was hypothetico-deductive. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: The hypothesis that students' motor skills improve with extended physical activity and motor training was confirmed. The school has good potential in stimulating all students' development of motor skills, but two lessons of PEH per week are not enough. Significant correlations were found between motor skills and self-esteem overall and the components friendship/sports efficacy and attention/learning efficacy. Differences in self-esteem between students with good motor skills and students with deficits may decrease with extended physical activity and motor training in school.

  • Profiles of personal characteristics and relevant pathways in the junior-to-senior transition : A longitudinal study of Swedish athletes
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Sport Psychology. - Rome : Edizioni Luigi Pozzi s.r.l.. - 0047-0767. ; 47:6, s. 483-507
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this study the specific foci were as follows: (1) to identify profiles of athletes in the junior-to-senior transition (JST) based on their personal characteristics (athletic identity, self-esteem and goal orientation) and (2) to describe the JST pathways relevant to the profiles. This quantitative longitudinal study included five measurements that were conducted approximately every six months. The following package of four instruments was used: the Athletic Identity Measurement Scale (Brewer, Van Raalte, & Linder, 1993), the Task and Ego Orientation in Sport Questionnaire (Duda, 1989), the self-esteem sub-scale from the Physical Self-Perception Profile – Revised (Lindwall, Hagger, & Asci, 2007) and the Transition Monitoring Survey (Stambulova, Franck, & Weibull, 2012). In the first measurement 100 club-based Swedish athletes (73 male and 27 female) with the mean age of 16.51 (SD = 1.32) participated. The Latent Profile Analysis identified three profiles of athletes and several similarities and differences can be seen in the profiles of athletes’ transition pathways. The main findings are: (1) three profiles of personal characteristics associated with different JST transition pathways were identified; (2) athletic identity appeared to be key personal characteristic that influenced the dynamic of adjustment and (3) different styles of coping strategies were associated with different JST pathways. The JST pathways relevant to the profiles are discussed based on the theoretical framework and previous research.

  • Athletic Identity and Moral Development : An examination of collegiate athletes and their moral foundations
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Sport Psychology. - : Eidizioni Luigi Pozzi. - 0047-0767. ; 51:2, s. 122-140
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Moral Foundation Theory provides a framework of understanding the underlying foundations of moral reasoning. More specifically, it is made up of five foundations that are 'intuitive ethics' representing values and norms that vary from person to person and influenced by developmental experiences. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether a relationship existed between athletic identity and the moral value preferences of collegiate athletes to shed light on the social impacts of athletic participation on college students. Two hundred and thirty-eight NCAA Division I intercollegiate, club sport, and intramural sport student-athletes completed measures of athletic identity and moral reasoning. Athletic identity was measured using the Athletic Identity Measurement Scale (AIMS) and the Moral Foundations Questionnaire (MFQ) served to evaluate participants' moral foundations. Although the primary hypothesis of a negative relationship between athletic identity and harm/care and fairness/reciprocity was not supported, analyses indicated that athletic identity was positively and significantly associated with ingroup/loyalty, authority/respect, and purity/sanctity values. Additional analyses indicated that gender and years of collegiate sporting experience moderated some of these relationships.

  • The process of burnout : A multiple case study of three elite endurance athletes
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Sport Psychology. - : Edizioni Luigi Pozzi srl. - 0047-0767. ; 38:4, s. 388-416
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this study was to gain a better understanding of the process of burning out in endurance athletes. The experiences of three elite cross-country skiers who left Their sport due to burnout were explored. Semi-structured interviews were conducted and inductively analyzed. The Athlete Burnout Questionnaire and training logs were used to validate the interviews and to enrich the analysis. The burnout process was found to evolve with different severity and time perspectives in the three cases. Athletic identity and achievement strivings to validate self-esteem were found to be important driving forces in the burnout process. Also, chronic lack of mental and physical recovery as well as early skiing success leading to high expectations comprised common themes in the burnout process.

  • Track and field athletes' experiences and perceived effects of flotation-REST.
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Sport Psychology. - 0047-0767. ; 46:5, s. 409-428
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Research has highlighted flotation-REST as a promising method for relaxation and performance enhancement in sport; however, to further evaluate the use of flotation-REST in an athletic environment, additional research is warranted. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with six elite track and field athletes about their experiences and perceived effects of flotation-REST. Athletes were interviewed twice; once for their immediate response and again to explore their perceptions of flotation-REST over time. The data was analyzed using interpretative phenomenological analysis. Flotation-REST was perceived as pleasant and relaxing. Five athletes reported less stress and an overall increase in well-being for one or two days afterwards, although they felt physically tired during training sessions. Being in a better mood, placing fewer demands on themselves, and feeling more optimistic and present were also perceived effects. This study shows the potential of flotation-REST as a technique for health promotion, stress management, and a means to practise mindfulness. ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR

  • "Not everyone gets the opportunity to experience this" : Swedish elite athletes' perceptions of quality of life
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Sport Psychology. - Rome, Italy : Edizioni Luigi Pozzi s.r.l. - 0047-0767. ; 52:5, s. 412-431
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study explored the essence of Swedish elite athletes' experiences of their quality of life (QOL). Eight individual elite sports athletes (3 men and 5 women; mean age 25.5 years, range: 20-32 years) were interviewed twice. Using interpretative phenomenological analysis, findings showed the essence of QOL to consist of four categories. Category 1: An inner striving to move forward in athletic development. Category 2: Perceived gratitude for the opportunity to invest in the sport and value-driven behaviors. Category 3: Good prerequisites for sport investment (satisfaction with opportunities for goal achievement, having a goal directed plan, and perceived relief from stressors). Category 4: Emotional states which encompassed durable and transient emotions linked to training, performing and goal achievement. Discussion is presented regarding the importance of future research and applied sport psychology practice considering elite athletes' holistic subjective experiences in context to better understand well-being, mental health and QOL for this population.

  • Athletes' crises : a developmental perspective
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Sport Psychology. - Rome : Edizioni Luigi Pozzi. - 0047-0767. ; 31:4, s. 584-601
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The concept of crisis is proposed to better understand the dynamics of sports careers. A crisis is considered a turning point in an athlete's development, caused by a set of transitional problems (contradictions, or inner conflicts) that he/she has to resolve, but is not able to resolve without qualified psychological assistance. Three types of athlete's crises are identified and described: age-related crises, sports career-related crises, and situation-related crises. Empirical support is given on the basis of the sports careers of Russian athletes. Two techniques of psychological counseling that could be offered to athletes during crises - "Substitution" and "Mobilization" - are briefly presented.
