  • Competition and coordination in Swedish botanical publication, 1820-79 : Eleven editions of Hartman's Handbook
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: History of Science. - : SAGE PUBLICATIONS LTD. - 0073-2753 .- 1753-8564. ; 60:2, s. 211-231
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In 1820, a Handbook of the Flora of Scandinavia by Carl Hartman was published in Stockholm by Zacharias Haeggstrom. The Handbook was a successful project for both author and publisher: similar enough to textbooks and academic publications to appeal in educational settings, yet ostensibly written for the general public. The Handbook went through eleven editions, becoming the standard reference flora for Swedish botanists - academic as well as others - before being succeeded after 1879 by a range of specialized floras aimed at schoolboys, students, or academic botanists. The trajectory of Hartman's Handbook through the nineteenth century highlights the changing conditions of Swedish botanical publication. It draws attention to authorship as a scientific career tool, and, conversely, the significance of scientific texts in the emergence of commercial publishing in the first half of the nineteenth century.

  • Integrating research integrity into the history of science
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: History of Science. - : SAGE Publications. - 0073-2753 .- 1753-8564. ; 58:4, s. 369-385
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This introductory essay frames our special issue by discussing how attention to the history of research integrity and fraud can stimulate new historical and methodological insights of broader import to historians of science.

  • Guidance counseling in the mid-twentieth century United States: : Measurement, grouping, and the making of the intelligent self
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: History of Science. - : SAGE Publications. - 0073-2753 .- 1753-8564.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article investigates National Defense Education Act and National Defense Education Act-related calls in the late 1950s for the training of guidance counselors, an emergent profession that was to play an instrumental role in both the measuring and placement of students in schools by “intelligence” or academic “ability”. In analyzing this mid-century push for more guidance counseling in schools, this article will first explore a foundational argument for the fairness of intelligence testing made by Educational Testing Service psychometrician William Turnbull in 1951, and then later taken up and employed by other National Defense Education Act-era advocates of testing and grouping. Secondly, this analysis will proceed to National Defense Education Act expert testimony, examining here assertions of the necessity of guidance counseling in schools, and an emergent and shared vision articulating the role guidance counseling was supposed to play in school life. A pattern or structure to this vision emerges here. According to its advocates, guidance counseling would not only inform the self-understanding of the measured individual, but it would also work to condition the ideology of individual intelligence across numerous layers of social life around the student: through peer group, through teachers and school administrators, and finally through home, family, and the wider community.

  • When is enough enough? : Accurate measurement and the integrity of scientific research
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: History of Science. - : SAGE Publications. - 0073-2753 .- 1753-8564. ; 58:4, s. 437-457
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • At a meeting of the Royal Society in 1925 participants expressed their concerns regarding a recent suggestion by the Australian physicist T. H. Laby of replicating the established value of the mechanical equivalent of heat. This rather controversial discussion about the value of redetermining this numerical fact brings to light different understandings of the moral economy of accuracy in scientific work; it signals a distinctive new stage in the historical understanding of accuracy and precision and the moral integrity in conducting research.

  • The emperor's herbarium : The German physician Leonhard Rauwolf (1535?-96) and his botanical field studies in the Middle East
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: History of Science. - : SAGE Publications. - 0073-2753 .- 1753-8564. ; 60:1, s. 130-151
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper presents the results of the new interdisciplinary research done on Leonhard Rauwolf's herbarium with plants from the Middle East, which was later owned by Emperor Rudolf II. Using various sources, it examines how the herbarium came into the imperial collections, Early Modern methods of botanical research as described by Rauwolf in his printed travelogue, and how the illustrations for the printed book were produced from the specimens in the herbarium. The appendix (available in the online version) presents the new corrected botanical identification of the c. 200 plants in the fourth volume of Rauwolf's herbarium, and a correct transcription of the Early Modern Latin and vernacular names Rauwolf collected for these plants.
