  • Shaftesbury om poetisk sanning och det naturliga samhället
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Lychnos. - Göteborg : Lärdomshistoriska Samfundet. - 0076-1648. ; , s. 11-26, s. 11-26
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • One of the most original voices in British post-revolutionary philosophy belongs to the third Earl of Shaftesbury (1671–1713). Rather than supporting the Hobbesian and Lockean idea of modern political society as an artificially formed creation, Shaftesbury perceives society as a beneficial outcome of nature and natural rationality. Shaftesbury’s understanding of natural society is furthermore entwined with aesthetic matters. The aim of the following article is twofold. First, due to the fact that Shaftesbury’s ideas rarely are analysed in any detail by Swedish scholars, it offers an introduction to Shaftesbury’s take on the complex relation between society and poetry to readers of eighteenth-century intellectual history in general, and readers of the history of literature in particular. Second, given that Shaftesbury is frequently regarded as the first modern advocate of aesthetic autonomy, I wish to problematize such an account by showing how Shaftesbury opposes the idea that poetry holds an instrumental value for society, while he simultaneously maintains the inseparability of poetical truth, artistic whole, and political naturalism. As this article shows, the Promethean myth of creativity is central for Shaftesbury’s understanding of the relation between society and poetry.

  • Den radioaktiva vetenskapen : Beredskapen mot kärnvapen och engagemanget för miljön i Sverige
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Lychnos. - : Lychnos, Lund University. - 0076-1648. ; , s. 11-29
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Throughout the Cold War, there was an extensive production of ideas and knowledge around radioactivity as a social hazard. Previous research shows that there is a lack of knowledge about the relationship between the preparedness against nuclear weapons that was built up in Sweden from the 1950s onwards and the environmental commit-ment that took shape a few decades later. The aim of this article is to contribute new knowledge about these historical conditions by examining the radioactivity research conducted at the Swedish National Defence Research Establishment [Försvarets for-skningsanstalt] (FOA). The exploration is focusing on a period during the 1960s and 1970s when questions about radioactivity in relation to nuclear weapons, nuclear power and the environment had a clear impact in Sweden. Swedish preparedness is usually associated with efforts to protect the human population. I show how animals, plants and other non-human life also became objects in defence research and the preparedness against radioactivity that the scientific work at FOA enabled. FOA was a Swedish governmental agency that provided scientific advice to the Swedish Total Defence. FOA operated at the intersection of military and civil science. The article is concerned with FOA’s ambitions and expressed interests. The primary empirical material consists of FOA publications. I focus on how radioactivity research was presented in Foatidningen that was published by FOA between 1963 and 2000.

  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Lychnos. - Uppsala : Lärdomshistoriska samfundet. - 0076-1648. ; , s. 63-80

    • The need for university reform. The educational commission’s description of the problems in Swedish higher education 1745-1751.During the so called age of liberty in Sweden (1721-1772), demands were promptly made for concrete applications of the rather elusive idea of 'utility'. One grand expression of these claims was the educational commission appointed in 1745 to investigate whether and in which ways the Swedish educational system, including the universities, should be reformed. Previous studies have primarily focused on analyzing the commission’s reform proposal; its content, potential consequences and the response it received from Uppsala University in particular. The relationship between the commission and the universities has, moreover, almost exclusively been considered as a struggle for influence over Sweden’s higher education. This article focuses instead on the ideas of the commission regarding the need for university reform. The article aims to suggest alternative approaches for subsequent studies, however I wish to also indicate the contours of a more nuanced understanding of the intentions of the commission. The article takes as an analytical starting point the assessment made by the commission that Swedish universities failed in reaching their legitimate goal: to educate students for positions in government offices. As this failure was considered harmful for the country it was believed to be in the state’s interest to regulate the influx of students into higher education as well as the knowledge and qualifications these students should have acquired upon graduation. Previous studies have considered the commission almost exclusively as a manifestation of the principle that universities should contribute to the economic utility or welfare of the country. This article brings to the fore that while the economy was indeed important, additional attention should be given to broader political interests of the commission.

  • Kalvbrässkontroversen : Veterinärmedicinaren Elis Sandberg, cancermedlet THX och skolmedicinen i Sverige från 1952 till 1989
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Lychnos. - Göteborg : Lärdomshistoriska samfundet. - 0076-1648. ; , s. 129-154
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Abstract. The Thymus Controversy. Elis Sandberg and the controversial cancer drug THX in Sweden 1952 – 1989This article explores the controversy surrounding Swedish veterinary Elis Sandberg and the alternative cancer drug THX from the early 1950’s up until Sandberg’s death in 1989. THX was an extract for injection made from calves’ thymus glands, as Sandberg − contrary to the medical community − was convinced that the thymus gland was an important agent in the body’s defense against cancer. The aim of the article is to outline the key themes and turning points of the conflict, but also to explain how and why it erupted and continued for decades. The controversy is examined in connection to a broad range of contexts, such as conventional medicine, health care policies, medical jurisdiction and political change. Thereby, the article shows how a lack of legislation on pharmaceutical trials, government attempts to delegitimize alternative medicine, a reformed health care system and a group of cancer patients in desperate need of effective treatment, created a cultural and structural space for THX. Further, it is discussed how early attempts at closing the controversy using scientific arguments failed, and later ones created public outcry, resonating with the growing critique of medicine and authorities in general in the 1960’s and 1970’s. Analytically, special attention is paid to the roles and changing meanings assigned to patients during the course of the controversy. It is suggested that the closure of the conflict may, at least in part, have been due to an increasing cultural relevance of patients as advocates for individual choice in medical treatment in the 1980’s. Keywords: controversial science, patient advocacy, history of medicine, Swedish welfare state, science and technology studies.

    • The art of living and the art of eating: Professor Linnaeus recommends. By Gunnar Broberg. As professor of medicine, Linnaeus taught dietetics. He followed the pattern outlined by Galen and Regimen salernitatis, adding an extensive material originating from general cultural history and his own experience.Early in his life he wrote Diaeta naturalis, a collection of rules focusing the blessings of natural life along the lines he himself had experienced during his journey into Lapland. His very popular lectures for the students of Uppsala – ongoing during more than three decades and collected in his to a large extent unpublished manuscript Lachesis naturalis and a great number of student notebooks – developed his primitivistic ideas, but also show a growing, pragmatic attitude towards different tendencies in Swedish society. Still, in his dietetics Linnaeus expresses an individualistic perspective rather than a collectivistic and national, in so doing following the classical tradition rather than getting close to the hygienistic movement coming a century later. The character of this essay is mainly inventory, emphasizing the possibilities of this rather unknown material when it comes to analysing an important Enlightenment discussion as well as Linnaeus as a person.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The time-space of the archive: on the shadow texts of Sara Lidman As a place for scientific research the archive may be stationary or mobile – or even a virtual site. Alongside its function as a source for empirical study, the archive holds several other crucial qualities which highlight the complexity of all epistemological endeavour, including its metaphorical or symbolical aspects. Thus, ”archive” or ”archival” has been frequently used keywords in recent debate and research, from feminist theory to art theory. Jacques Derrida’s striking metaphor of ”mal d’archive” – archive fever – has been followed by several more or less related thought figures, such as Sara Ahmed’s image of  ”the Unhappy Archives of Feminist Theory” och Ann Cvetkovich’ ”Archive of Feelings” has been most influential.    However, among archives, an author’s archive always holds an exceptional position, located as it is on the treshold between private, personal and public. Remaining objects, imprints of intimate articulations of emotions in diaries and letters are systematized side by side, often in chronological order, with manuscripts, drafts, articles etc. As such, an author’s diary never tells just one story – but shelters the potential of many, written and unwritten; manifest or hidden. In this way an author’s archive can be said to form a ”time-space” of its own, where the material layerings of memories, narrative patterns and lived experiences which both resists and challenges archival ordering principles.   Taking its departure from the archive of Swedish novelist Sara Lidman (1923-2004), the aim of this article is to reflect on the encounter between the researcher and the author in an archival context. The methodological and stylistic approach is experimental, making use of personal diary writing as a means to enfold the tactile and sensual aspects of the ”archival experience”. The article thus wants to argue that archival research must be recognized as an emotional as well as epistemological and intellectual practice.
