  • Förhistoriska bilder som religionsvetenskaplig källa : Några kriterier att beakta vid tolkningar av religionsikonografiskt material
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Chaos. - 0108-4453 .- 1901-9106. ; 56:2, s. 65-79
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A challenge when interpreting prehistoric art is that we often lack written source material, a contemporary text written by people who lived in the cultural context that is studied. It is therefore not uncommon to use texts that are younger than the material that we want to interpret. This could lead to misinterpretations and circular arguments. Images are cultural products formed by their contemporaries and influenced by older idea traditions. This article presents four criteria that might be worth taking into consideration when interpreting prehistoric religious iconography. The article discusses how one might proceed to study prehistoric religious art and what could be helpful to keep in mind when analyzing religions by means of pictures and material culture.

  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Chaos. - 0108-4453 .- 1901-9106. ; 64:2, s. 53-76
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article discusses the difference between identifying and classifying attributes and analyzes the problematic implications if we confuse the two. The empirical material consists of Gallic stone reliefs depicting goddesses with a wheel as attribute. Male deities depicted with wheels have mainly been identified as a Celtic Jupiter or a male sky god sometimes called Taranis. The Gallic goddesses show that the wheel attribute was not an identifying attribute exclusive to this god, but that it rather served as a marker for an activity shared by several deities, both male and female. The articles argument that we need to distinguish between identifying and classifying attributes in order to make a source critical and methodological correct iconographical interpretation, especially when we interpret iconographical representation without the aid of any written sources.

  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Chaos. - 0108-4453 .- 1901-9106. ; :65, s. 125-148

    • The discussion of ritual killing and sacrifice of humans in Old Norse religion has a long tradition. In the more text oriented discipline of history of religions, the opinion has sometimes been very critical to the theories that human sacrifices were performed, while the discipline of archaeology has been more inclined to interpret some finds as the traces of sacrifice, although sometimes due to a too wide definition of the word ‘sacrifice’. Since the two disciplines use different sources, the research needs an analysis of the religious phenomenon with a consideration of the archaeological material, and with respect to how the two disciplines may contribute to the analysis. The written sources mention and describe human sacrifices, but the question of their authenticity is problematic. Some new archaeological surveys have revealed finds that has raised the question of human sacrifices during Late Iron Age in the northern countries anew. The new archaeological material may provide an altered interpretation of the written texts. But then we need to discuss the definition of ‘human sacrifice’ from the perspectives of both disciplines.

  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Chaos. - 0108-4453 .- 1901-9106. ; :65, s. 149-172
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Ritual is often seen as a safe and certain of success. That the question of risk and failure is important for our understanding of ritual has, however, been argued by an increasing number of scholars. This article analyses two Vedic śrauta rituals - the horse-sacrifice and the royal consecration - from this perspective. According to brahmanic theory, sacrifice implies a dangerous break-up of cosmic structure; once started, a ritual must be successfully brought to an end, or the performer will come out lesser than before. Royal ritual also involves political dangers: being a claim to overlordship, rivals might oppose and defeat the sacrificer. Śrauta ritual appears not as a microcosm devoid of danger and unknown outcome. Rather, risk increases a ritual’s value and is an essential part of Vedic royal ritual, wherefore the most awesome sacrifice has the highest risk factor. Danger and conflict in śrauta ritual reflect the aristocratic-agonistic culture in which it evolved.

  • "The Jew Monster" : Religion, satir och judisk identitetsproblematik i en karikatyrteckning av Eli Valley
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Chaos. - : Forlaget Chaos. - 0108-4453 .- 1901-9106. ; :59, s. 31-56
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The article examines cartoons and comics as a platform for religious criticism and satire, with particular focus on a work called The Jew Monster made by the controversial American-Jewish cartoonist and creator of comics, Eli Valley. Valley’s satirical works have a number of recurring themes, such as Israeli politics, Zionism and its legacy, the conflict between Israelis and Palestinians, anti-Semitism and Jewish identity and religion. Not least is Valley often using a kind of provocative humour to criticize political and religious leaders. In order to examine some aspects of Valley’s satire, the cartoon The Jew Monster will be analyzed. The first part of the analysis consists of a close reading of the cartoon carried out with regard to its context, viz. the heated debates regarding religious caricatures that have taken place during the last years. The principal aim of this analysis is to establish what kind of phenomena Valley ridicules with this satirical work. In the second part of the analysis the reception of The Jew Monster by its audience is examined. This analysis is conducted through an assessment of the comments on the cartoon on various websites (including Valley’s own), in journals and media statements.

  • 2013

    • The humanistic tradition within the study of regligions has currently lost much of its identity. It could be argued that it is in fact about to be devoured by approaches taken over from the social and antural sciences. By discussing some features that through the last 150 years have been seen as a typical for a humanistic methodology, and a couple of more idiosyncratic features, the author aims to initiate a discussion whether a humanistic study of religion is obsolete, or if it still is something wort preserving and developing. The arguments are supported by examples taken from the 19th century American Christian-socialist fraternity The Noble and Holy Order of the Knights of Labor.

    • The conditions for the creation, distribution and reception of myths have changed drastically during the late modern era. Do myths exist at all in the contemporary, Western societies? If so, where are they and what do we then mean by “myth”? The article is a sketchy overview of different areas where myths might be found, and the author simultaneous tries to discuss relevant definitions of myth. From the conceptualization of myth in the Enlightenment and Romantic era the article moves on to discuss the reception of mythology in New Age spirituality, the invention of Nationalist mythologies and the issue of myths in the products of the Culture industry and commerce. The main focus is on the debatable issue wither or not the liberal, “post-politic” discourse of contemporary Westerns democracies – a discourse often presented as drained of any fantastic rhetoric and only concerned with practical, instrumental decisions – could be said to contain myths.

    • There is not much written evidence regarding the early faith of the Sami people, before the missionaries came with Christianity. Moreover, the most important written sources are mainly produced by the Christian missionaries during the 1600 and 1700 centuries and may not reflect the true religious content in Sami beliefs. This article presents a witness, namely the authors own father, revealing a new aspect, which cannot be found in the original written texts by the missionaries, on of how Sami people view reality and how this reality in which humans and animals live is governed by another more powerful reality.

    • The success of the realist novel was parallel to the gradual exorcising of the supernatural from the cosmos through the advance of scientific explanations. The disenchantment of Nature and Man pushed the larger religious vision of reality into the realms of fantasy, dreams, intoxication and madness. This situation makes it problematic for religious authors to build upon their religious worldviews within the limitations of a realist novel, without, so to speak, breaking with the underlying ontology of the genre. The novel then turns into fantasy, or a hybrid as magical realism, but loses its claim to veracity. The issue in focus in this article is the challenges facing a religious author when a case is made for realism in which also the supernatural is included. This literary strategy is an attempt to widen the realist framework, instead of, for example, circumventing it by the creation of an alternative fantasy world. For the discussion, the article uses examples from the novel series Children of the Last days by Michael O’Brien, a contemporary Canadian novelist and painter.

    • The well-known Old Norse narrative about how the god Þórr fishes the “Serpent of Middle Earth” out of the depths of the waters was obviously widely spread in pre-Christian and early Christian times. The sources in which this narrative is preserved reach from Gosforth in the west to Altuna in the east and span over at least three centuries. The narrative therefore raises interesting questions about continuity, reception, adaptation, and interpretation. This article tries to address these questions through a survey of the forms of the narrative as preserved in the extant sources.

    • In the academic discussion about the Muslim Brotherhood, MB in Sweden, there is consensus that the Islamic Association in Sweden, IFiS is inspired by MB but the organizational relationship between the organizations has not been researched before. Holy White Lies is an English translation of the original Arabic book al-Kedhb al-Abyad al-Muqaddas. Both books were published in Cairo 2018. The book collects primary sources consisting of documentation and statement in Arabic and Swedish from various media channels, statutes, interviews and archived material from government institutions confirming the doublespeak used by IFiS to hide the organizational relationship with the International MBs network. In this article, the author defends the thesis of the book, replicate the book’s critic and presents evidence of doublespeak, the relationship between different organizations in Sweden, Egypt and international organizations and present ideological references for the thesis.

  • Ingår i: Chaos. Dansk-norsk tidsskrift for religionhistoriske studier. - 0108-4453. ; 59:1, s. 199-218
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Jag vill inte dö, jag vill bara inte leva ["I don't want to die, I just don't want to live"](2008) by Ann Heberlein, Doctor of Theology, attracted much attention when it was published and is already considered a modern classic. The autobiographical text revolves around a psychiatric diagnosis - bipolar disorder type II - but it also develops several theological and ethical themes. This article examines Heberlein’s text departing from the genre (auto)pathography, and related questions of authenticity, facts and fiction. It is argued that the pathographical reading of the text, which has dominated its reception, tends to overlook the religious aspects of Heberlein’s writing, thus limiting the understanding of the text to a testimony from a pathological individual. By highlighting Jag vill inte dö, jag vill bara inte leva in relation to a Christian tradition of confession, other central religious themes appear, particularly themes related to Christian concepts such as eschatology, "sin" and "grace".

  • Ingår i: Chaos. - 0108-4453 .- 1901-9106. ; 71:1, s. 141-200

    • The notion that man besides his physical body also possesses subtle anatomy is central to contemporary holistic spirituality and Esotericism as well as to alternative medicine and Modern Yoga. Concepts related to subtle anatomy can historically be found in religious traditions worldwide. However, the contemporary “Western” subtle anatomy has a relatively standardized sevenfold structure, linked to seven chakras, described as subtle energy centers in the human body. The article discusses a central period in the late 19th century when the Theosophical Society and its most significant forefront, Helena Petrovna Blavatsky, presented the concept of subtle anatomy to a broader Western audience. It also deals with the question of how the doctrine of three human principles (body, soul, and spirit) developed into her teachings of the seven human principles. A change took place around 1880-81, in an interaction between American, European, and Indian theosophists, and there is a shift of doctrine between Blavatsky's two major works Isis Unveiled (1877) and  The Secret Doctrine  (1888) where the latter contains her sevenfold cosmology in total. In Modern Yoga, the doctrine of subtle anatomy is usually linked to Eastern traditions, especially Hinduism, but how important was the Theosophical Society’s move to India in terms of changing Blavatsky’s teachings of the human principles? Was it the exchange of ideas with Hindus and Buddhists that initiated its development? The article explores another hypothesis which instead traces Blavatsky’s teachings about the seven principles back to influences before the move to India, as well as to specific numerological, mathematical and geometric speculations that she shared with several thinkers in her time. Similar ideas in New Age literature would go as “Sacred Geometry.” The article presents arithmological conceptions that were common among late 19thcentury occultists, spiritualists, and “mythographers.” These include in particular: The number seven, Pythagoras tetraktys, the tetrad, the pyramid, the cube, and the hexagram.

  • Ingår i: Chaos: skandinavisk tidsskrift for religionshistoriske studier. - 0108-4453. ; 68:2, s. 171-199
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this study is to analyse how a clerical fascist agent in Sweden, Sveriges Religiösa Reformförbund (the Swedish Association of Religious Reform, SRR), explained the alleged decline of Swedish culture during the years 1930-1945. I distinguish three factors - SRR's views of exegesis, race, and Jews - to scrutinise why SRR took that position. I argue that these factors were driven by a radical liberal theological project, characterised as a pursuit for a religious rebirth of Swedish culture, and interacted in the light of SRR's views of modernity. I also offer a brief discussion on the concept of clerical fascism in order to make a theoretical contribution to the fields of comparative religion and comparative fascist studies.

  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Chaos. - : Forlaget Chaos. - 0108-4453 .- 1901-9106. ; I:65, s. 189-215
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The article deals with the phenomenon of spiritual warfare and deliverance from demons in a dispensationalist church Cornerstone in San Antonio, Texas. The article is based upon fieldwork at the church 2012-2014. The main focus of the article deals with an event called encounter weekend that the church organizes several times a year and have as its purpose to heal people from traumatic events in their life. The consequence of traumatic events results in something called “the wound” that is regarded as a gateway for demons to enter a person’s life. The climax of the weekend is a deliverance from the demons that is interpreted to effect a person’s life negatively. The article argues that in looking at the ideas of the demonic a form of social critique is revealed and the practice of spiritual warfare and deliverance must be seen in the context of images that they are part of a larger cultural war that is between the forces of God against the forces of Satan.

    • The article deals with the history of Maulana Karenga and his creation of the Black Nationalist philosophy Kawaida and the organization US. The US organization was founded in 1965 and is part of the Black Power movement. Based upon the idea that the liberation of black people could not occur before a cultural awakening had taken place, US focused on the need to create a connection to Africa in cultural and religious matters. Kawaida, created for this purpose, evolved to include both ethical and religious teachings that rejected Islam and Christianity – particularly the idea of submission to a higher God. US also developed a highly hierarchical structure, with Karenga as its leader, and rituals to reinforce their beliefs. These beliefs included apocalyptic visions of a coming civil war that would in the end only amount to conflicts with other black nationalists. While small in numbers, the influence of the US organization has been significant, given its role e.g. in the creation of Kwanzaa, and in the emergence of Afrocentricity.

Tradition is used among the informants in various ways, sometimes for political reasons, and sometimes for identity reason, or in a more general sense as resistance to changes and influence from the surrounding society. This article addresses the “religious” aspects of Tradition, and presents how informants perceive the world from the perspective of Tradition, especially regarding conceptualizations of good and bad. It presents their worldview in this regard in detail as well as outlines the main ritual practices connected to the perceptions of good and bad, and reflects on how nuu-chah-nulth speak about Tradition.

    • ”INHERITED ARCHETYPES AND MODERN AUTHORITIES IN THE MYTH OF PRIMORDIAL MATRIARCHY. Origin, Timelessness and Unity in two Popular Exegeses of Greek Mythology and its Prehistory, Later Destiny, and Present Possibilities”The article examines the various types of authority and the processes of authorization discernible in two popular texts representing that particular genre of spiritual feminism, which applies a Jungian archetypal perspective on ancient Greek myths. First, the version of “The Myth of Primordial Matriarchy” that is found in these texts is discussed critically in relation to archaeological and historical knowledge as well as reasonable argument. Second, the two concepts “archetypes” and “goddesses”, which are the most important authorities explicitly brought forward in the texts, are discussed as regards the different theological and ontological presuppositions discernible. The relationship between these authorities and others, such as ancient texts, modern scholars and the writers themselves, is also discussed. The author of this article concludes that the process of authorisation is based on a myth that is effective in binding together the different levels of timelessness, creation and origin, personalized tragic biography, inherited essence, and women’s situation and proposed roads to awareness today. The myth’s effectiveness is partly due to the concept of the divine: usually it is presented as immanent, but several statements about the goddesses and archetypes are more easily interpreted in transcendental terms. As an effect, readers of the texts may view history in its entirety as a personal biography of the Goddess, who is at the same time an innate aspect of each individual. Finally, the author questions the absolutizing and dichotomizing presuppositions of the gendered concept of divinity which is found in the texts, as well as the implications of the psychological ideal for human individuals.

    • This article discusses a new form of practices which are offered by private companies or entrepreneurs (layman therapists) whose practices focusing on self-development and healing rapidly expanded in the early 2000s in Sweden. I have chosen to analyze these practices from a Ritual Studies perspective as individual-centered rites designed to remedy ill health and low self-esteem and to build new, positive visions for individuals or groups of people at places of work. The targets for these rites are not only private individuals but also public establishments, who buy these and similar practices as means of stress reduction (e.g., mindfulness) or to increase personal capacity (e.g., coaching). Questions raised include: How do these rites reflect the structure of society? How are practices designed to be experienced as natural means for the participants to achieve therapeutic healing and better confidence? What are the visions and goals that are implicitly built into the practices and communicated to society and the individual?

    • This article examines the expansive commercialization of various neospiritual and pseudoscientific practices currently mobilized in late modern Swedish pursuits of identity, meaning, and health. The focus is on the emergence and marketing of new entrepreneurs who have established themselves as “coaches” promoting personal development, and how they organize their own systems of education and certification. Publicly financed institutions at local, regional, and federal levels increasingly purchase such services for the benefit of their clients and personnel. The recent Swedish surge in unemployment, for instance, will be met by huge public investments in personal “coaching” for the unemployed. The article mainly focus on how coaching practices are introduced and applied in Swedish society, how they cater to individual pursuits of meaning, and how they contribute to socially acceptable expressions of discontent. Finally, a discussion is rised about which kinds of therapeutic messages and understandings are emancipatory for individual clients, and which merely serve to defuse social discontent.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this article is to show how the Finnish language, and especially the epic poetry of Kalevala formed and inspired J.R.R. Tolkien in the shaping of Middle-earth. This article explores the background of Elias Lönnrot and his compilation, and compares it to the way Tolkien’s interrelated and independent stories grew and took form in what posthumously was published in a series of edited collections by his son Christopher. Reading The Lord of the Rings makes it obvious that it is part of a bigger collection of stories, unfinished tales that somehow connects with real history, legend and myth. In 2007 Christopher Tolkien published The Children of Húrin, an edited, long version of the tale of Túrin Turambar, a hero bearing close resemblances to the character Kullervo in Kalevala. This is but the tip of the iceberg, and we know from Tolkien’s fictive Elven language Quenya that it is modelled directly on Finnish, which is also true of lot of other names in his works. In his idea of “Sub-creation” he could combine elements from myth, legend, history and folklore with his fictive world, and make it seem like a primarily world. This article shows how close Elias Lönnrot and J.R.R. Tolkien where in their idea of creating what is known as "National Literature".

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this article is to explore two case studies of Old Norse sexual charms and curses. The first case is a curse described in Skírnismál which is used by Skírnir to break Gerðr’s will, and the second is a description by Saxo Grammaticus in his Gesta Danorum of how Óðinn used sorcery to break Rind’s will and rape her. The main argument is that the terminology and worldview found therein are possible to trace in other sources, where sorcery is employed to break the will of young women and force them to have sexual intercourse with the one who uttered or carved the charm or curse. With evidence taken from runic inscriptions and accounts of love magic from saga literature, as well as younger folkloristic examples, it is argued that this is not only a mythic motif, but something that was practiced at a societal level. It is also argued that many of the charms and curses contain foul language that serves the purpose to reinforce the charms and make them more potent.
