  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This paper communicates the results of a reassessment of the original burial position of the Barum burial, Scania, Sweden, dated to c. 8,700 years ago. Based on a thorough analysis of the photographs from Folke Hansen’s excavation, it is concluded that the body was placed in an upright sitting position. The notion that the body was leaning backwards is based on a faulty interpretation of the original plan drawn by Hansen. New anatomical data relevant for the interpretation of the burial position is presented. Further, new osteological data supplement the analysis performed by Gejvall in the 1970s, especially with regard to the sex and age assessment of the skeleton and the so-called parturition scars, which played a significant role with respect to the sexing of the find in 1970. Here, a pathological diagnosis is supplied for this condition, osteitis pubis, a condition that is more commonly linked to physical activity in general. Finally, a detailed analysis of the proposed pathological condition in the lower arm reveals that there is no evidence for osteomyelitis, as has been suggested previously.

  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Counterpoint: Essays in Archeology and Heritage Studies in Honour of Professor Kristian Kristiansen. Edited by Sophie Bergerbrant and Serena Sabatini.. - Oxford : Archaeopress. - 9781407311265 ; 2013:2508, s. 243-252
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • According to our knowledge carved footprints appear in a variety of prehistoric cultures and rock art sites during a period of 3,000 to 4,000 years. This indicates that the carved footprint represents a phenomenon that contains condensed symbolic information of unusual significance, strength and life span. In that respect the footprint might, just as the cup mark, be seen as a pictogram and an archetypical symbol. It has been interpreted in different ways: as a sign of an invisible deity that could not be depicted but announced its presence by its footprint, as a sign of adoration or as representing a deceased person. However, this does not necessarily mean that all engraved footprints have the same design or the same meaning. Quite the opposite! This is also clearly testified by the dispersed appearance of this symbol in the prehistoric record.

  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Prehistoric pottery across the Baltic : regions, influences and methods - regions, influences and methods. - 0143-3067. - 9781407314631 ; 2785, s. 21-28
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • To what extent can we identify sites where metallurgy has been conducted by studying the ceramic residue found at the site? Ceramic tools used for metal casting, such as crucibles, claymoulds and tuyères- so called ‘technical ceramics' - are often used as indicators of metalcrafts.Their often vitrified and sintered appearance is, on many occasions, used as traits of identification. This article discusses a crucible and a tuyère that show no clear traces of vitrification, and whether or not the objects should be disregarded as technical ceramics. By building reconstructions of these two objects and testing them in an archaeological experiment, we have been able to study the traces of use on the reconstruction and compare them to the two artefacts. In this article we argue that signs of use, such as vitrification and sintering, are not always present on used tuyères and crucibles and that we should also try to look for other signs of use when classifying archaeological materials as technical ceramics.

  • Ingår i: Counterpoint. - Oxford : Archaeopress. - 9781407311265 ; , s. 733-737
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Half a century ago – in October 1962 – the world was on the threshold to the unthinkable: a full-scale nuclear war between the USA and the Soviet Union. The focus of the conflict was a number of Soviet launching sites for medium-range missiles situated in the Cuban countryside. Today, at first glance it is difficult to discover traces at these sites that testify to their important role in twentieth-century history. A closer look, however, reveals not only material remains but also an extensive, peaceful reuse of elements from the former military installations. This photo-essay presents some of the material evidence found during archaeological fieldwork at the missile site at Santa Cruz de los Pinos, also known as San Cristobal 3, situated c. 100 kilometres west of Havana.

  • Ingår i: Counterpoint. - Oxford : Oxbow Books. - 9781407311265 ; , s. 637-
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • It is commonly argued that if you study societies on the small scale level you tend to emphasise particularities and may fail to realise the importance of outside events for local development. The grand scenario, on the other hand, often tends to reduce social complexity in favour of deterministic and simple explanations as a driving force for particular events. This text stresses that no matter what preferences one might have concerning level of scale, going deeper into details is generally a rewarding and when using a bottom-up perspective, detailed small scale analysis may turn out to be as informative on the general level, as they may be on the particular.

  • The function of the Minoan oval house at Chamaizi
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: British Archaeological Reports - International series. - 0143-3067. ; 1647, s. 15-18
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report the results of our archaeoastronomical investigation of the unique building at Chamaizi in eastern Crete. The structure has been an enigma to Aegean archaeologists because of its oval shape, which is unparalleled in Minoan architecture. Religion has figured prominently in the discussions of the house’s function, primarily due to the discovery of a well and some figurines. We had included it in our pilot study of Minoan astronomical interest since some scholars have categorized it as a peak sanctuary, and these sites are ideally located for astronomical observations. An axial symmetry for the building, however, was impossible to calculate, and this discouraged us to the extent that we left its evaluation to a late stage in our work. When we returned to our data, with the knowledge acquired from our study of a number of other Minoan buildings, we were in a better position to study the house and understand its function. The main entrance was orientated to sunrise on the morning of the winter solstice in the early Middle Minoan period (ca 2000 BCE) and the door on the northern side framed the heliacal setting of Arcturus in the same period. The orientation to sunrise at the winter solstice occurs also at the important villa of Vathypetro, and the orientation to Arcturus is the fourth that we have found at Minoan sites. Thus our results from Chamaizi add to the accumulating data that the Minoans consistently oriented important monuments to major celestial events and precisely those events important for maintaining a calendar. A hypothesis that may be made from these results is that the contacts between Minoan sites known from trade can be understood to have included also the intellectual exchange of scientific information resulting in a common calendar and probably also common rituals in connection with it: celebrations of the new year, the beginning and end of the sailing season, and important events in the agricultural year such as ploughing, as we have tried to show in earlier studies.

    • The Budsene hoard, arranged with animal bones, female dress equipment, and spiral rings in a well, represents a rare type in hoards. Period V hoards are also dissimilar to contemporary burials in equipment. In this paper Budsene is related to a living person, to resources, production, and life-cycle of a farm. It is suggested that the Budsene hoard presents a glimpse into women’s co-responsibilities in the production and organization of a farm in a prosperous North European setting.

All jewellery exhibited a surface wear cause by a covering garment. THis garment was identified as the large tubular pieces of dress found in all female graves with well preserved dress. Thus the female costume consisted of a short dress /Corded skirt) and a large coverring garment. Bronze jewellery were carried on the body both summer and winter and were thus an integrated part of the costume.

  • A recently excavated medieval brick kiln at Saltsjö Boo, Sweden and the hXRF analyses of its products
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: British Archaeological Reports - International Series. - 0143-3067. ; , s. 81-92
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The brick kiln at Saltsjö Boo is one of very few such structures known from medieval Sweden. Approx ¾ of the kiln has been excavated in successive short excavations from 2006 to 2011. Carbon 14 and TL (Thermoluminiscence) analyses indicate that the kiln has been in operation from c. 1250 to c.1450. This paper presents the results of the excavations and discusses the production of bricks and industrial logistics of the site. To study brick manufacture and changes that occurred in composition of the raw material during over a period of 200 years we have used a handheld XRF, which offers great possibilities for chemical analyses on ceramics. A clear advantage of the method is that a large amount of samples may be analysed at low cost and during a short period of time. The data acquired at the analysis have been processed by means of various statistical methods from interpretations of scatter plots of two elements at time to multivariate tests. Of special interest has been to determine what may be considered as a normal variation in a sample from this type of context and explain anomalies in the material.

  • The San Giovenale pottery : production and raw material
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: British Archaeological Reports - International Series. - 0143-3067. ; 1509, s. 89-103
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • San Giovenale is a small inland Etruscan community approximately 60 km north of Rome. The site was excavated between 1956 and 1965 and the focus of the research has been aimed at the archaic period as well as the proto- Villanova period. The Late Etruscan period has up to now been more or less neglected. This resent work is to a large extent based on pottery and one cornerstone of the study is the belief that a majority of this Late Etruscan pottery is locally produced, not only the coarse ware but also the simpler tableware such as Late Creamware. One possible way to verify the hypotheses of a local production is by comparing the raw material components of the coarse ware and the tableware as well as clay deposits around the San Giovenale site. Very little of this kind of combined work between clay surveying, laboratory analyses of clays and pottery (thin-section analyses, thermal analyses, XRF-analyses, Carbon analyse and Mössbauerspectroscopy) and traditional studies of vessel shape, decoration and vessel function has previously been done on the small Etruscan inland settlements.

  • Pots in Context: Aspects on Pottery Production and Use in the Early Neolithic Funnel Beaker (TRB) Culture on Öland, SE Sweden
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: British Archaeological Reports - International Series. - 0143-3067. ; 2809, s. 55-66
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper discusses contextual aspects of pottery from the two early Neolithic Funnel Beaker (TRB) sites Resmo and Runsbäck, on the island of Öland, SE Sweden. The sites are situated 15km apart on the west side of the island and the C14 dates place the activities at the sites at c. 3900–3600BC and 3600–3100 BC respectively, possibly with some overlap. The pottery has been analysed regarding its design, raw material use, technology and vessel use. While overall similarities in the ceramic craft at the two sites are obvious, some articulated differences were noted in the design as well as in the wares, while vessel use patterns are strikingly similar between the two assemblages. The Resmo assemblage is characterised by an exceptional degree of homogeneity while the Runsbäck pottery displays more variation. The observed differences are viewed against the contexts in which the pottery was recovered, and the different patterns of pottery production and use are suggested to reflect differences in function and duration between the sites. The Runsbäck pottery seems to be associated with everyday activities of mainly domestic character, whereas theResmo pottery is suggested to reflect some form of special occasion possibly connected to ritual activities performed in a monumental landscape setting. This in turn can be related to later events in the area, which includes the construction of megalithic tombs only a few centuries later.

  • 2013
  • Ingår i: British Archaeological Reports - International series. - 0143-3067. ; 2508, s. 491-498
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • With only a few exceptions, the construction of the Bronze Age ship in Scandinavia has been interpreted mainly from twodimensional miniature depictions: rock-art and bronze artefacts. In this paper we add a third feature, the Bronze Age stone ship settings, and argue that they represent practical vessels, at least partly. With such a view a third dimension becomes observable and provides possibilities for discussion about a full-scale representation of a Bronze Age ship. Different components in ship construction are discussed and compared with details found in depicted ships on rocks and bronzes. The discussion is based upon an analysis of a ship setting in Lau Parish on the island of Gotland in the Baltic Sea, visited and recorded by the authors in April 2009.

  • 2015

  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The beginning of the Iron Age (Hallstatt C) at c. 800 BC marked an important event in European prehistory. One part of this change involved the introduction of new kinds of death rituals including the horse and wagon complex. New studies also demonstrate the presence of important changes in the locations of settlements in various regions across Europe. The strong impact of Oscar Montelius’ chronological scheme for the Scandinavian Bronze Age (which confined this period as one which ended c. 500 BC) has prohibited the formulation of a comparative European perspective on the Scandinavian material. However, large-scale rescue excavations have clarified the period surrounding 800 BC as an important time which functioned as a division between the organization of agriculture, settlements and landscapes in south and middle Sweden. This paper reviews these results against a wider European backdrop.
